Abstract:The development of transition-metal sulfides, such as nickel sulfides (e.g., Ni3S2), as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction is one potential solution to environmental pollution and energy crisis. However, its limited utilization of visible light and high recombination ratio of photoinduced electron–hole pairs suppress its photocatalytic activity. The key issue in improving photocatalytic efficiency lies in fabricating a p–n heterojunction with efficient interfacial contact and broadband absorption. Here, we developed a method for fabricating an interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructure with close interfacial contact. In our fabrication approach, a porous Ni3S2 scaffold is prepared by chemical vapor deposition and a hydrothermal method is used to prepare a Ni3S2/MoS2 photocatalyst with close interfacial contact. The numerous interfaces of the interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures promote effective electron–hole pair separation and facilitate electron transfer. Meanwhile, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 nanostructures favor broadband absorption extending from 300 to 800 nm. As a result, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 exhibits a remarkable rate of hydrogen evolution (540.75 μmol g−1 h−1), which is 5.71 and 3.89 times greater than those of pure Ni3S2 and MoS2, respectively, under otherwise identical conditions. The results of this work are significant for developing promising transition-metal sulfide heterostructures in the field of hydrogen evolution by photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention owing to their strong visible light absorption, suitable band energy levels, and excellent electronic charge transportation properties. This review focuses on the recent progress related to the design, modification, and construction of CdS-based photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic H2 evolution performances. First, the basic concepts and mechanisms of photocatalytic H2 evolution are briefly introduced. Thereafter, the fundamental properties, important advancements, and bottlenecks of CdS in photocatalytic H2 generation are presented in detail to provide an overview of the potential of this material. Subsequently, various modification strategies adopted for CdS-based photocatalysts to yield solar H2 are discussed, among which the effective approaches aim at generating more charge carriers, promoting efficient charge separation, boosting interfacial charge transfer, accelerating charge utilization, and suppressing charge-induced self-photocorrosion. The critical factors governing the performance of the photocatalyst and the feasibility of each modification strategy toward shaping future research directions are comprehensively discussed with examples. Finally, the prospects and challenges encountered in developing nanostructured CdS and CdS-based nanocomposites in photocatalytic H2 evolution are presented.

Abstract:The recent advances in CdS‐based type‐II, Z‐scheme, and S‐scheme heterojunctions and its applications in photocatalytic H2 production are exclusively highlighted. This review provides an exclusive highlight of their fundamentals, preparation strategies, charge transport mechanism, and performance properties of these configurations in boosting H2 generation. Furthermore, the review offers insights into the current challenges and future prospects of CdS‐based heterostructures for practical applications. Cadmium sulfide (CdS) based heterojunctions, including type‐II, Z‐scheme, and S‐scheme systems emerged as promising materials for augmenting photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) generation from water splitting. This review offers an exclusive highlight of their fundamental principles, synthesis routes, charge transfer mechanisms, and performance properties in improving H2 production. We overview the crucial roles of Type‐II heterojunctions in enhancing charge separation, Z‐scheme heterojunctions in promoting redox potentials to reduce electron‐hole (e−/h+) pairs recombination, and S‐scheme heterojunctions in combining the merits of both type‐II and Z‐scheme frameworks to obtain highly efficient H2 production. The importance of this review is demonstrated by its thorough comparison of these three configurations, presenting valuable insights into their special contributions and capability for augmenting photocatalytic H2 activity. Additionally, key challenges and prospects in the practical applications of CdS‐based heterojunctions are addressed, which provides a comprehensive route for emerging research in achieving sustainable energy goals.

Abstract:Hydrogen generation via photocatalysis-driven water splitting provides a convenient approach to turn solar energy into chemical fuel. The development of photocatalysis system that can effectively harvest visible light for hydrogen generation is an essential task in order to utilize this technology. Herein, a kind of cadmium free Zn-Ag-In-S (ZAIS) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) that shows remarkably photocatalytic efficiency in the visible region is developed. More importantly, a nanocomposite based on the combination of 0D ZAIS CQDs and 2D MoS2 nanosheet is developed. This can leverage the strong light harvesting capability of CQDs and catalytic performance of MoS2 simultaneously. As a result, an excellent external quantum efficiency of 40.8% at 400 nm is achieved for CQD-based hydrogen generation catalyst. This work presents a new platform for the development of high-efficiency photocatalyst based on 0D-2D nanocomposite.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production represents a very promising but challenging contribution to a clean, sustainable and renewable energy system. The photocatalyst material plays a key role in photocatalytic H2 production, and it has proven difficult to obtain corrosion resistant, chemically stable, visible light harvesting and highly efficient photocatalysts, which have their band edges matching the O2 and H2 production levels. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are opening a new vista in the development of highly active, nanostructured photocatalysts with large surface areas for optimized light absorption, minimized distances (or times) for charge-carrier transport, and further favorable properties. Our focus here is on recently developed nanostructured photocatalysts. In particular, the particle size, chemical composition (including dopants), microstructure, crystal phase, morphology, surface modification, bandgap and flat-band potential of the nanophotocatalysts have shown a visible effect on photocatalytic H2 production rates, which may be further increased by adding sensitizers, cocatalysts or scavengers. Finally, potential directions required to push this research field a step further are highlighted.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production by means of water splitting has attracted significant attention to convert solar energy into chemical energy. In this present study, a facile one-step cation exchange approach was used to prepare CuxS decorated on CdS nanorods (CuxS/CdS NRs, x=1-2) for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production in water under visible light irradiation (lambda>420 nm). Under optimal conditions, the highest H-2 production rate achieved was approximate to 111 mu molh(-1) and the apparent quantum yield reached. 7%. Efficient transfer processes of photogenerated charge carriers from CdS to CuxS, which can be attributed to the uniform distribution of CuxS on the CdS surface, were confirmed by steady-state photoluminescence (PL) spectra and time-resolved photoluminescence spectra. All the results indicate that this low-cost cation exchange reaction is a promising method to construct an efficient system for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Metal-sulfide nanostructures have piqued the interest of researchers for decades due to their intriguing optoelectronic properties. Indeed, significant advances and improvements have been made in various fundamental aspects for cutting-edge applications, such as water splitting and hydrogen production. Furthermore, rising demand for low-dimensional materials due to lower material consumption and improved performance due to quantum size effects has spurred research on semiconducting metal sulfides. Consequently, size-controllable nanostructures with diverse morphologies have been fabricated and studied for potential applications. However, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate is still limited mainly by fast recombination rate, poor solar energy utilization and lack of surface-active sites for H2 reduction. This review will highlight particularly recent findings in metal-sulfide-based photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions, considering the swift development and excellent research in this field. Following a brief overview of fundamental properties, we will explore state-of-the-art strategies for enhancing H2 generation efficiencies over the pristine, heterostructured and co-catalayzed metal-sulfide photocatalysts.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are discrete, quasi-spherical carbon nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm. The properties of CQDs can be further enhanced by doping with elements such as nitrogen, phosphorous, sulphur, and boron or co-doping with heteroatoms such as nitrogen-phosphorous, nitrogen-sulphur, and nitrogen-boron. These excellent properties of CQDs can be utilized to enhance the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. Therefore, in this review, we summarize different types of bare CQD-scaffolded semiconductors, both doped and co-doped, used for photocatalytic hydrogen production. Moreover, the detailed photocatalytic mechanism of CQD/semiconductor-based hydrogen production is reviewed. Recent progress in the design and development of CQD-based photocatalysts, along with the challenges involved, is comprehensively reviewed.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is considered to be a promising solution to the global energy crisis and to environmental pollution caused by fossil fuel consumption. In the present study, a core/shell cadmium sulfide/zinc oxide (ZnO/CdS) semiconductor heterojunction photocatalyst is used with a cobalt salon molecular co-catalyst for highly enhanced photocatalytic activity. CdS nanorods were synthesized using a simple solvothermal method and a ZnO shell was grown by a solution deposition method. Under optimum conditions, the system exhibited a H-2 evolution rate of 725 mu mol h(-1) mg(-1) with a turnover number of similar to 102,700 and excellent stability over 50 h in the presence of Na2S/Na2SO3 as the electron donor under visible light. The highest apparent quantum yield of the system was 44% under monochromatic 420 nm light. The formation of ZnS during photocatalysis was proved due to surface dissolution of ZnO in alkaline sulfide solution. ZnS can enhance the photocatalytic activity of ZnO/CdS nanorods by providing increased charge transfer interfaces. The molecular cobalt co-catalyst also contributed to the enhanced activity by accepting the photogenerated electrons from the semiconductor photosensitizer. The proposed mechanism suggests that the photogenerated electrons in CdS are transferred not only to ZnO but also to the molecular co-catalysts, leading to highly improved photocatalytic activity for H-2 production. Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production using semiconductor photocatalysts providing a promising strategy for solving the energy crisis. Metal sulfide photocatalysts have received extensive attention due to its visible‐light response, adjustable band structures and relatively mild preparation conditions. In this review, the emerging strategies to improve photocatalytic performance and stability of metal sulfides are summarized, including engineering of heterojunction, defect engineering, loading single‐atom cocatalyst, photothermal effect, loading dual cocatalysts and coating stable shell. Special attention is paid to the influence mechanism of latest strategies on the photocatalytic process, with a focus on charge transfer, separation and participation in surface chemical reaction behavior. Finally, with the goal of promoting the rapid progress of metal sulfides for solar hydrogen production, the key challenges of the latest research frontiers and the prospects on future development of metal sulfides are discussed. Abstract:Combining the hydrogen (H2) extraction process and organic oxidation synthesis in photooxidation-reduction reactions mediated by semiconductors is a desirable strategy because rich chemicals are evolved as byproducts along with hydrogen in trifling conditions upon irradiation, which is the only effort. The bifunctional photocatalytic strategy facilitates the feasible formation of a C═O/C─C bond from a large number of compounds containing a X-H (X = C, O) bond; therefore, the production of H2 can be easily realized without support from third agents like chemical substances, thus providing an eco-friendly and appealing organic synthesis strategy. Among the widely studied semiconductor nanomaterials, ZnxCd1-xS has been continuously studied and explored by researchers over the years, and it has attracted much consideration owing to its unique advantages such as adjustable band edge position, rich elemental composition, excellent photoelectric properties, and ability to respond to visible light. Therefore, nanostructures based on ZnxCd1-xS have been widely studied as a feasible way to efficiently prepare hydrogen energy and selectively oxidize it into high-value fine chemicals. In this Review, first, the crystal and energy band structures of ZnxCd1-xS, the model of twin nanocrystals, the photogenerated charge separation mechanism of the ZB-WZ-ZB homojunction with crisscross bands, and the Volmer-Weber growth mechanism of ZnxCd1-xS are described. Second, the morphology, structure, modification, synthesis, and vacancy engineering of ZnxCd1-xS are surveyed, summarized, and discussed. Then, the research progress in ZnxCd1-xS-based photocatalysis in photocatalytic hydrogen extraction (PHE) technology, the mechanism of PHE, organic substance (benzyl alcohol, methanol, etc.) dehydrogenation, the factors affecting the efficiency of photocatalytic discerning oxidation of organic derivatives, and selective C-H activation and C-C coupling for synergistic efficient dehydrogenation of photocatalysts are described. Conclusively, the challenges in the applicability of ZnxCd1-xS-based photocatalysts are addressed for further research development along this line.
Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanosheets Decorated with Zinc-Cadmium Sulfide for Type-II Heterojunctions for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:In this study, we fabricated graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets with embedded ZnCdS nanoparticles to form a type II heterojunction using a facile synthesis approach, and we used them for photocatalytic H2 production. The morphologies, chemical structure, and optical properties of the obtained g-C3N4-ZnCdS samples were characterized by a battery of techniques, such as TEM, XRD, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. The as-synthesized g-C3N4-ZnCdS photocatalyst exhibited the highest hydrogen production rate of 108.9 μmol·g-1·h-1 compared to the individual components (g-C3N4: 13.5 μmol·g-1·h-1, ZnCdS: 45.3 μmol·g-1·h-1). The improvement of its photocatalytic activity can mainly be attributed to the heterojunction formation and resulting synergistic effect, which provided more channels for charge carrier migration and reduced the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Meanwhile, the g-C3N4-ZnCdS heterojunction catalyst also showed a higher stability over a number of repeated cycles. Our work provides insight into using g-C3N4 and metal sulfide in combination so as to develop low-cost, efficient, visible-light-active hydrogen production photocatalysts.
Heterojunctions of ZnS with Zn Vacancies and Hexagonal CdS Pyramids for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:Metal sulfides with suitable morphology typically possess efficient solar light utilization and suitable band structures for photocatalytic hydrogen production. However, a significant challenge is faced in developing optimal morphology of individual semiconductor and precisely modulating hybrid heterostructhttps://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/njc#ure. Herein, this work reports the superior photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of hexagonal CdS pyramids compared to other nanostructured CdS catalysts. Additionally, ZnS nanoparticles with zinc vacancies are grown in situ on the surface of the hexagonal CdS pyramids, meticulously constructing a Z-scheme heterojunction of CdS/ZnS. By elaborately adjusting the ratio of Cd to Zn sources, the interfacial structure of the heterojunction can be optimized to significantly reduce the obstruction of charge transfer. With the same concentrations of Cd and Zn sources, the heterojunction of CdS/ZnS hexagonal pyramids - nanoparticles morphology exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 4660 μmol·h−1·g−1 under visible light, which is 4.6 and 84.72 times higher than those of pristine CdS pyramids and ZnS nanoparticles, respectively. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results comprehensively demonstrate the promoted interfacial charge separation in the Z-scheme CdS/ZnS. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational design of catalyst morphology and construction of Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts for efficient photocatalysis.

Abstract:Over the past decades, designing efficient photocatalysts represents a remarkable route to deal with energy crisis, environmental pollution issues and global warming problems. Zinc cadmium sulfide (ZnxCd1-xS) based photocatalysts have been explored extensively due to their continuously tunable band gap structure and outstanding absorption ability for visible light, and substantial satisfying contributions have been made. This work first summarizes recent progress on the synthesis of ZnxCd1-xS based materials. They also have various applications in photocatalytic area, including photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, pollutants degradation and carbon dioxide reduction. Especially, the mechanism of different pathways to improve the photocatalytic performance of ZnxCd1-xS based photocatalysts is discussed in detail, which has never been reported in any previous reviews up to now. Moreover, the current challenges and development ideas of ZnxCd1-xS based materials are proposed. It is expected that our review would be helpful for the application of ZnxCd1-xS based photocatalysts in future.

Abstract:Catalysts with a single atom site allow highly tuning of the activity, stability, and reactivity of heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore, atomistic understanding of the pertinent mechanism is essential to simultaneously boost the intrinsic activity, site density, electron transport, and stability. Here, we report that atomically dispersed nickel (Ni) in zincblende cadmium-zinc sulfide quantum dots (ZCS QDs) delivers an efficient and durable photocatalytic performance for water splitting under sunlight. The finely tuned Ni atoms dispersed in ZCS QDs exhibit an ultrahigh photocatalytic H-2 production activity of 18.87 mmol hour(-1) g(-1). It could be ascribed to the favorable surface engineering to achieve highly active sites of monovalent Ni(I) and the surface heterojunctions to reinforce the carrier separation owing to the suitable energy band structures, built-in electric field, and optimized surface H-2 adsorption thermodynamics. This work demonstrates a synergistic regulation of the physicochemical properties of QDs for high-efficiency photocatalytic H-2 production.

Abstract:The photocatalytic water splitting technique is a promising alternative to produce hydrogen using a facile and proficient method. In the current Review, recent progress made in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using 2D nanomaterials (NMs) and composite heterostructures is described. The strong in-plane chemical bonds along with weak van der Waals interaction make these materials lucrative for surface-related applications. State-of-the-art protocols designed for the synthesis of 2D NMs is discussed in detail. The Review illustrates density functional theory (DFT)-based studies against the new set of 2D NMs, which also highlights the importance of structural defects and doping in the electronic structure. Additionally, the Review describes the influence of electronic, structural, and surface manipulation strategies. These impact the electronic structures, intrinsic conductivity, and finally output toward HER. Moreover, this Review also provides a fresh perspective on the prospects and challenges existing behind the application and fabrication strategies.

Photocatalytic hydrogen production using twinned nanocrystals and an unanchored NiSx co-catalyst

Abstract:Facilitating charge separation as well as surface redox reactions is considered to be central to improving semiconductor-catalysed solar hydrogen generation. To that end, photocatalysts comprising intimately interfaced photo absorbers and co-catalysts have gained much attention. Here, we combine an efficient Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanotwinned photocatalyst with a NiSx co-catalyst for photogeneration of hydrogen. We find that an internal quantum efficiency approaching 100% at 425 nm can be achieved for photocatalytic H2 production from water with Na2S/Na2SO3 as hole scavengers. Our results indicate that the NiSx co-catalyst is not anchored on the surface of the host CZS nanotwins and instead exists in the reaction solution as freestanding subnanometre clusters. We propose that charge transfer is accomplished via collisions between the CZS and NiSx clusters, which aids charge separation and inhibits back reaction, leading to high water reduction rates in the suspension.

Abstract:Efficient solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion through water splitting relies on the development of low‐cost photocatalysts with high photoactivity and stability. ZnxCd1−xS, an emerging metal sulfide (MS) solid solution for STH, possesses several unique advantages, such as a tunable bandgap, abundant elemental constituents, and high stability. Although ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are investigated for hydrogen evolution, their photoactivity still has to be enhanced for commercial applications. Herein, the design concept, crystal and band structure properties, and original photoactivity of ZnxCd1−xS are briefly introduced, and ZnxCd1−xS solutions with different morphologies and structures, modifications, synthesis methods, and vacancy engineering are then discussed. Subsequently, the combination of ZnxCd1−xS and cocatalysts and several representative ZnxCd1−xS‐based heterojunction photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are reviewed and discussed in detail. Finally, the unsolved issues in the application of ZnxCd1−xS photocatalysts and their potential solutions for developing advanced ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are discussed. ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are reviewed based on the engineering of crystal and band structure, morphology and structure, vacancy, cocatalyst, and heterojunction; recent research progress and the unsolved issues have to be further studied in future research.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly of CdS Quantum Dots with Co9S8 Hollow Nanotubes for Enhanced Visible Light Photocatalytic H2 Production

Abstract:CdS quantum dots (CdS QDs) are regarded as a promising photocatalyst due to their remarkable response to visible light and suitable placement of conduction bands and valence bands. However, the problem of photocorrosion severely restricts their application. Herein, the CdS QDs-Co9S8 hollow nanotube composite photocatalyst has been successfully prepared by loading Co9S8 nanotubes onto CdS QDs through an electrostatic self-assembly method. The experimental results show that the introduction of Co9S8 cocatalyst can form a stable structure with CdS QDs, and can effectively avoid the photocorrosion of CdS QDs. Compared with blank CdS QDs, the CdS QDs-Co9S8 composite exhibits obviously better photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. In particular, CdS QDs loaded with 30% Co9S8 (CdS QDs-30%Co9S8) demonstrate the best photocatalytic performance, and the H2 production rate reaches 9642.7 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is 60.3 times that of the blank CdS QDs. A series of characterizations confirm that the growth of CdS QDs on Co9S8 nanotubes effectively facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, thereby improving the photocatalytic hydrogen production properties of the composite. We expect that this work will facilitate the rational design of CdS-based photocatalysts, thereby enabling the development of more low-cost, high-efficiency and high-stability composites for photocatalysis.
