Abstract:The development of visible light responsive photocatalysts for simultaneous production of hydrogen (H-2) fuel and value-added chemicals is greatly promising to solve the energy and environmental issues by improving the utilization efficiency of solar energy. Herein, the three-component Ni/(Au@CdS) core-shell nanostructures were constructed by the hydrothermal synthesis followed with photodeposition. The intimate integration of plasmonic Au nanospheres and visible-light responsive CdS shells modified with Ni cocatalyst facilitated the generation and separation of electron-hole pairs as well as reduced the overpotential of hydrogen evolution. The Ni/(Au@CdS) photocatalyst exhibited excellent performance toward the selective transformation of benzyl alcohol under anaerobic conditions, and the yields of H-2 and benzaldehyde reached up to 3882 and 4242 mu mol.g(-1).h(,)(-1) respectively. The apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) was determined to be 4.09% under the irradiation of 420 nm. The systematic studies have verified the synergy of plasmonic effect and metal cocatalyst on enhancing the photocatalysis. This work highlights the desirable design and potential application of plasmonic photocatalysts for solar-driven coproduction of H-2 fuel and high-value chemicals. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Photocatalytic splitting of water to hydrogen (H-2) has attracted much attention because of its potential to address the concerns of air pollution and energy shortage. In this present study, we report that noble-metal-free cobalt nitride (Co3N) can be used as an efficient cocatalyst on CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) for photocatalytic H-2 production in water under visible light irradiation. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra and photoelectrochemical measurements indicated that the loading of Co3N onto CdS NRs can facilitate the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers, leading to an enhanced photocatalytic activity for H-2 production. The H-2 production rate reached similar to 137.33 ae mol h(-1) mg(-1) (lambda > 420 nm) and the apparent quantum yield (AQY) was similar to 14.9% at 450 nm.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production from water in a noble-metal-free system has attracted much attention in recent years. Herein we report on the use of core/shell cadmium sulfide/graphitic carbon nitride (CdS/g-C3N4) heterojunction nanorods modified by nickel hydroxide (Ni(OH)(2)) as a highly efficient photocatalyst for visible light-driven hydrogen production from water. Due to efficient separation of the photo-excited charge carriers in the CdS/g-C3N4 core/shell nanorods and the synergistic effect of Ni(OH)(2), the optimal hydrogen evolution rate over Ni(OH)(2)-CdS/g-C3N4 is 115.18 mu mol h(-1) mg(-1) under visible light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm), which is 26 times higher than the CdS/g-C3N4 nanorod composite without Ni(OH)(2) and similar to 7 times better than the 0.5 wt% Pt-CdS/g-C3N4 nanorod composite. The apparent quantum efficiency is similar to 16.7% at an excitation of 450 nm. During photocatalysis, no degradation of Ni(OH)(2) was observed based on the XPS data, indicating that it is a robust cocatalyst. Moreover, the present photocatalyst showed excellent photocatalytic stability for hydrogen production and the turnover number (TON) reached similar to 24 600 over 90 hours.

Abstract:Ni-based precious-metal-free cocatalysts have attracted copious attention due to their nature-friendly and cost-effectiveness compared with platinum (Pt) during photocatalytic H2 evolution. However, the typical morphologies and structures of Ni-based cocatalysts (e.g., Ni) focus on the zero-dimensional (0D) nanoparticles. Herein, we demonstrate a two-dimensional (2D) nickel nanosheets cocatalyst decorated Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanocrystals that pays attention to visible-light-motivated photocatalytic H2 generation. By rationally introducing Ni nanosheets to modify Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles, a series of unique 2D/0D Ni/Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanohybrids with different Ni contents were synthesized. The optimized Ni-5%/Zn0.5Cd0.5S composite possesses a high H2 production rate of 5930μmolh−1 g−1 upon visible-light (λ > 420 nm) illumination, which was about 33.7 and 15.4-fold more elevated than those of Zn0.5Cd0.5S nanocrystals, and Pt/Zn0.5Cd0.5S, respectively. Combining photoelectrochemical (PEC) and photoluminescence (PL) studies, the conspicuous enhancement in photocatalytic H2 generation was stemmed from the Ni nanosheets cocatalyst act as an electron-transfer layer to extract photoexcited electrons from Zn0.5Cd0.5S and offer enormous reaction sites for H2 production. This work verifies Ni nanosheets' capability for photocatalytic water splitting. The Ni/Zn0.5Cd0.5S composed of magnetic metal and ternary metal sulfide can be extended to other photocatalytic applications, such as dyes degradation and CO2 reduction.

Nanoconfined Nickel@Carbon Core-Shell Cocatalyst Promoting Highly Efficient Visible-Light Photocatalytic H-2 Production

Abstract:The realization of large-scale solar hydrogen (H2 ) production relies on the development of high-performance and low-cost photocatalysts driven by sunlight. Recently, cocatalysts have demonstrated immense potential in enhancing the activity and stability of photocatalysts. Hence, the rational design of highly active and inexpensive cocatalysts is of great significance. Here, a facile method is reported to synthesize Ni@C core-shell nanoparticles as a highly active cocatalyst. After merging Ni@C cocatalyst with CdS nanorod (NR), a tremendously enhanced visible-light photocatalytic H2 -production performance of 76.1 mmol g-1 h-1 is achieved, accompanied with an outstanding quantum efficiency of 31.2% at 420 nm. The state-of-art characterizations (e.g., synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure) and theoretical calculations strongly support the presence of pronounced nanoconfinement effect in Ni@C core-shell nanoparticles, which leads to controlled Ni core size, intimate interfacial contact and rapid charge transfer, optimized electronic structure, and protection against chemical corrosion. Hence, the combination of nanoconfined Ni@C with CdS nanorod leads to significantly improved photocatalytic activity and stability. This work not only for the first time demonstrates the great potential of using highly active and inexpensive Ni@C core-shell structure to replace expensive Pt in photocatalysis but also opens new avenues for synthesizing cocatalyst/photocatalyst hybridized systems with excellent performance by introducing nanoconfinement effect.

Abstract:Cocatalyst contributes to promote the separation and transfer of charge in photocatalytic system, which is an important factor to improve photocatalytic decomposition of water to produce hydrogen. Here, a simple and effective method to combine the main catalyst and the cocatalyst by a modified impregnation method is provided. A novel Ni 2 P/CdS is prepared by in-situ growth of Ni 2 P cocatalyst on the CdS surface using the modified impregnation method. The research shows that Ni 2 P, as an electron carrier, can promote the separation of electrons and holes, and significantly improve the photocatalytic activity of Ni 2 P/CdS. When Ni 2 P was 3% in Ni 2 P/CdS, the photocatalytic activity of hydrogen production was the highest, and the hydrogen production rate reached an astonishing 16.02 mmol h −1 g −1 under visible light, which was 57 times that of CdS. Moreover, Ni 2 P/CdS photocatalyst has outstanding stability for hydrogen production. The mechanism of photocatalytic hydrogen production by Ni 2 P/CdS is proposed.

Abstract:In photocatalysis, maximizing light absorption and utilizing light-stimulated electrons is of paramount importance. In this study, Ni-decorated CdxZn1−xS twinned crystals were synthesized via solvothermal method with Ni loadings ranging from 0.5 to 5 wt%. The Ni nanoparticles introduced the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) effect, broadening photon absorption and extending the photo-response into the visible light range. Notably, 1 wt % Ni-decorated Cd0.5Zn0.5S exhibited remarkable H2 evolution rate of 1497 μmol(h.gcat)−1. This enhancement is attributed to the SPR effect, which enhances light absorption and photogenerated electron generation, as well as efficient electron transfer facilitated by Ni's lower Fermi level. These findings emphasize the crucial role of optimal Ni loading and the SPR effect in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Downsizing transition metal-based cocatalysts on semiconductors to promote photocatalytic efficiency is important for research and industrial applications. This study presents a novel and facile strategy for anchoring well-dispersed metal species on CdS surface through controlled decarboxylation of the ethyl-enediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) ligand in the metal-EDTA (M-EDTA) complex and CdS mixture precursor to function as a cocatalyst in the photocatalytic H-2 evolution. Microstructure characterization and performance evaluation reveal that under visible light the resulting pentacoordinated Co(ll) and hexacoordinated Ni(ll) on CdS exhibits a high activity of 3.1 mmol h(-1) (with turnover frequency (TOF) of 626 h(-1) and apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 56.2% at 420 nm) and 4.3 mmol h(-1) (with TOF of 864 h(-1) and AQE of 67.5% at 420 nm), respectively, toward cocatalytic hydrogen evolution, and the cocatalytic activity of such a hexacoordinated Ni(ll) even exceeds that of platinum. Further mechanistic study and theoretical modeling indicate that the fully utilized Co(ll)/Ni(ll) active sites, efficient charge transfer, and favorable kinetics guarantee the efficient activities. This work introduces a promising precursor, i.e., M-EDTA for planting well-dispersed transition metal species on the sulfide supports by a facile wet-chemistry approach, providing new opportunities for photocatalytic H-2 production at the atomic/molecular scale.

Abstract:Loading transition metal as a cocatalyst to a photocatalyst is a promising and mainstream way to improve the photocatalytic H-2 evolution reaction (HER) of a semiconductor. However, transition metal cocatalysts are rarely reported to enhance photocatalytic oxygen reduction (ORR) to generate H2O2. In this work, a light-induced deposition approach was adopted to precisely load nickel sulfide nanodots onto the surface of g-C3N4, and the resultant composite photocatalysts enhanced both photocatalytic HER and ORR performances. In the typical case of NiS@g-C3N4, NiS@g-C3N4-30 displayed a H-2 evolution rate of 3297 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under visible-light irradiation, which showed 74 and 1.23 times activity for pure g-C3N4 and classical Pt (3%) modified g-C3N4, respectively. NiS@g-C3N4-30 also exhibited the best photocatalytic efficiency with a H2O2 production of 400 mu M in 1 h, which was 12.6 times that of pure g-C3N4. The remarkable activity and stability of this bifunctional catalyst can be attributed to the accurate loading of intimately contacted NiS nanodots at the electron transfer sites of g-C3N4 nanosheets, which can boost the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and accelerate the chemical reaction on the surface of the photocatalyst. This work opens a new pathway for the precise preparation of bifunctional cocatalysts for solar to chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Developing non-noble metal photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is crucial for exploiting renewable energy. In this study, a photocatalyst of Ni2P/CdS nanorods consisting of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanorods (NRs) decorated with Ni2P nanoparticles (NPs) was fabricated using an in-situ solvothermal method with red phosphor (P) as the P source. Ni2P NPs were tightly anchored on the surface of CdS NRs to form a core-shell structure with a well-defined heterointerface, aiming to achieve a highly efficient photocatalytic H2 generation. The as-synthesized 2%Ni2P/CdS NRs photocatalyst exhibited the significantly improved photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 260.2 μmol∙h−1, more than 20 folds higher than that of bare CdS NRs. Moreover, the as-synthesized 2%Ni2P/CdS NRs photocatalyst demonstrated an excellent stability, even better than that of Pt/CdS NRs. The photocatalytic performance enhancement was ascribed to the core-shell structure with the interfacial Schottky junction between Ni2P NPs and CdS NRs and the accompanying fast and effective photogenerated charge carriers’ separation and transfer. This work provides a new strategy for designing non-noble metal photocatalysts to replace the noble catalysts for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is one of the strategies to meet energy demand. Catalysts and cocatalysts used to produce H2 are usually made of precious metals, which limits its further development. It is necessary to find efficient and low-cost non-noble metal catalysts and cocatalysts. Mn0.25Cd0.75S was synthesized by hydrothermal method and composite with amorphous nickel boride nanomaterial. Hydrogen production over NiB/Mn0.25Cd0.75S composites with different ratios under visible light was studied. The results showed that the photocatalytic effect of 10% NiB was the best, which was 13.06 mmol/g/h, 3.7 times that of pure Mn0.25Cd0.75S. The enhancement mechanism is that Mn0.25Cd0.75S composite has a close contact interface with NiB, which is favorable for the separation of photocarriers and provides more catalytic active centers. The composite material has good visible light absorption ability and efficient charge separation ability. The results show that transition metal borides can be used as a high efficient cocatalyst, which can significantly improve the photocatalytic performance of semiconductor materials, providing a new idea for replacing noble metal catalysts.

Abstract:The utilization of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect and metal cocatalyst decoration to form the Schottky junction are two effective methods to promote photocatalytic performances. However, combining these two approaches into a single photocatalyst system is challenging. Here, a simple solution-phase strategy is employed to integrate plasmonic Cu-Ni bimetal nanoparticles into ultrathin CdS nanosheets to enhance photocatalytic activity. The optimized Cu-Ni/CdS ternary photocatalyst exhibits a photocatalytic H2 evolution rate of 28.19 mmol g-1 h-1, which is more than 88 times higher than CdS and also significantly enhanced compared to Cu/CdS and Ni/CdS binary photocatalysts. Furthermore, the 8% Cu-Ni/CdS demonstrates a high apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 21.5% at 400 nm and 12.1% at 520 nm, respectively. The as-obtained nanocomposites showcase exceptional stability during cycling measurements. The impressive photocatalytic activity of the Cu-Ni/CdS can be credited to the synergistic effect of the SPR electrons of Cu and the Schottky junctions from Ni nanoparticles. This synergy allows the CdS nanosheets to absorb wide-range visible light, separate carriers, and enhance the surface kinetics of H2 production. In addition, a comprehensive analysis is presented on how Cu-Ni enhances the photocatalytic performance of CdS nanosheets using experimental and DFT calculations. This work offers valuable insights into developing cost-effective plasmonic Cu-Ni bimetal-modified CdS nanosheets, which hold great promise in advancing novel ternary metal-semiconductor photocatalysts for efficient solar energy conversion.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is an economical and sustainable pathway to use solar energy for large-scale H2 production. We report a highly efficient noble-metal-free photocatalyst formed by integrating amorphous NiS with a CdS nanorods (NRs)/ZnS heterojunction material for photocatalytic H2 production in water under visible light irradiation (λ < 420 nm). The results show that the photocatalytic H2 production rate reaches an optimal value of up to 574 µmol·h−1 after the loading of NiS, which is more than 38 times higher than the catalytic activity of pure CdS NRs. The average apparent quantum yield is ∼43.2% during 5 h of irradiation by monochromatic 420 nm light. The present study demonstrates the advantage of integration strategies to form not only semiconductor heterojunctions but also photocatalyst-cocatalyst interfaces to enhance the catalytic activity for photocatalytic H2 production.

Abstract:Developing efficient non-precious metal semiconductor photocatalysts is highly desirable for photocatalytically splitting water. In this work, the composite of the nanocrystal twinned Zn0.5Cd0.5S (ZCS) solid solution decorated with highly dispersed Ni2P nanoparticles was successfully formed by in situ growth method, and it exhibited remarkable photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of visible light. A high rate of hydrogen production of 30473 µmol h−1 g−1 was achieved, and the apparent quantum yield (AQY) was as high as 83.5% at 420 nm. Moreover, the sample could maintain outstanding photocatalytic hydrogenation activity after 4-cycle continuous catalytic process. Abstract:Ni directional doping in the lattice of CdS V with the Ni cations targeted linked to P (CdS V -Ni-P) was successfully synthesized via a step wise assembly method, which exhibited an excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The photoelectric performance characterization proved that the Ni directional doping and Ni cations targeted linked with P in CdS V -Ni-P not only accelerating the photo-generated electrons transfer but also decreasing efficiency of the charge recombination. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that CdS V -Ni-P can also induce more charge-carriers participate in photocatalytic reaction and decrease electron binding restriction capacity. Moreover, the results of UV–vis DR spectra and VB-XPS spectra confirmed that the construction of this CdS V -Ni-P could effectively narrow the bandgap. Meanwhile, the result of Gibbs free energy demonstrated the S-H adsorption bond in CdS V -Ni-P was get weaken, which is benefit for hydrogen desorption from S sites, thus achieving a high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) result. Based on the synergistic effects, CdS V -Ni 6.7 -P 9.6 presented a relatively high hydrogen evolution rate of 167.5 mmol h -1 g −1 under the visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is almost 60 times of CdS V .

Abstract:Ni-doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanospheres with nickel phosphide (Ni2P) loading (Ni2) were successfully prepared via the two-step thermal treatment growth and chemical reduction method in this work. Firstly, the thermal treatment method was applied to introduce the Ni2+ into the lattice of CdS and induce the Ni-precursor loaded on surface of the CdS intimately. Then, the Ni-precursor was reduced into Ni(OH)2 by using the chemical reduction process. Furthermore, the Ni2P were loaded on the CdS via the second thermal phosphorization reaction. The loaded Ni2P would evidently accelerate the transfer of photo-generated electrons between CdS-Ni and Ni2P and meanwhile effectively decrease the charges recombination. Moreover, the results of UV–vis DR spectra and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that Ni cations doped in the lattice of CdS lead to a doping level at the bottom of the conduct band, which narrowed the bandgap. The work function indicated that doped Ni2+ helps to enhance the migration and separation of the photo-induced charge. Based on the synergistic effects, 3.7% Ni2 presented a relatively high hydrogen evolution rate of 176.6 mmol h−1 g−1 under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), which is 63 times of the common CdS.

Abstract:Ni-Ni(OH)2 composite was synthesized by a novel and facile photodeposition strategy and used as the cocatalyst of CdS for solar-to-hydrogen conversion. Under visible light, the hydrogen evolution rate of Ni-Ni(OH)2/CdS was 428 mmol g- 1h- 1 and remained essentially unchanged after 24 h in Na2S/Na2SO3 aqueous solution. In particular, the Ni-Ni(OH)2/CdS also displayed excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (13.3 mmol g- 1h- 1) in 40 vol% glycerol. A set of spectroscopy and electrochemical characterizations were performed to explore the photoinduced interfacial charge dynamics. Ni and Ni(OH)2 were synergistic cocatalysts for improving charge utilization and photocatalytic performance.
