Nanostructural Metallic Materials: Structures and Mechanical Properties

Abstract:The trade-off of strength and ductility of metals has long plagued materials scientists. To resolve this issue, great efforts have been devoted over the past decades to developing a variety of technological pathways for effectively tailoring the microstructure of metallic materials. Here, we review the recent advanced nanostructure design strategies for purposely fabricating heterogeneous nanostructures in crystalline and non-crystalline metallic materials. Several representative structural approaches are introduced, including (1) hierarchical nanotwinned (HNT) structures, extreme grain refinement and dislocation architectures etc. for crystalline metals; (2) nanoglass structure for non-crystalline alloys, i.e. metallic glasses (MGs); and (3) a series of supra-nano-dual-phase (SNDP) nanostructures for composite alloys. The mechanical properties are further optimized by manipulating these nanostructures, especially coupling multiple advanced nanostructures into one material. Particularly, the newly developed SNDP nanostructures greatly enrich the nanostructure design strategies by utilizing supra-nano sized crystals and MGs, which exhibit unique size and synergistic effects. The origins of these gratifying properties are discussed in this review. Furthermore, based on a comprehensive understanding of microscopic mechanisms, a broad vision of strategies towards high strength and high ductility are proposed to promote future innovations.

Abstract:Nanostructured transition metal (Fe, Co and Ni) carbides and nitrides have attracted much attention due to their active properties in various areas such as nanomagnetism, biomedicine, and electrocatalysis. However, the intrinsically harsh characteristics of carbides and nitrides make their synthetic protocols difficult, especially at the nanoscale. The Focus Review featured on the Back Cover discusses both traditional and de novo synthetic strategies to generate these materials, as well as their electronic, magnetic, and crystallographic structures, and biomedical and catalytic applications. Abstract:Nanotechnology makes it possible to intentionally modify the properties of surfaces and endow them with any desired function.Nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films have represented important advances in control of wetting, adhesion, mechanical, thermal, magnetic, electrical, and optical properties and ability to direct cell behavior.A number of promising approaches to fabricate functional micro-and nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films have been stimulated by opportunities to enhance the properties of surfaces and interfaces via the combination of surface structure, morphology, and physical and chemical properties.Such functional micro-and nanostructured surfaces, coatings, and films are playing an increasingly important part in a broad range of novel applications, such as energy, electronics, photonics, as well as sensor systems, advanced materials, and medical devices.This special issue features articles that cover a wide range of recent progress in design, fabrication, and characterization of innovative nanostructured surfaces with the aim of improving their surface properties and functional performance, as well as new insights on physical principles underlying their properties and enormous potential applications.Highlighted below are important contributions from this special issue.C. Song et al. address the growth of semimetal bismuth and antimony films on reactive substrate.The strategy presented is facile and cost effective, which may develop the design of functional thin films of metal or other inorganic materials.
