Abstract:This paper discusses consensus position tracking and vibration control issues of multiple overhead cranes equipped with flexible cables subject to unknown time-varying actuator faults, where each crane is modeled by partial differential equations (PDEs). To mitigate the effect of unknown simultaneous time-varying actuator faults, both multiplicative and additive, and external disturbances, an innovative adaptive fault-tolerant consensus tracking strategy was developed using a PDE based model. The proposed control scheme can move multiple overhead crane payloads to a required setpoint and eliminate the transverse deflections of flexible cables, where only some cranes know the setpoint. Furthermore, all closed-loop signals are shown to be uniformly bounded; additionally, consensus tracking errors and transverse deflections are shown to ultimately converge to small adjustable regions of the origin. Finally, numerical simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of the developed control strategy. Note to Practitioners —Coordinated control of multiple overhead cranes has become increasingly critical to improving lifting capacity, reducing building costs and time, and meeting the requirements of industrial automation. However, in the case of overhead cranes with flexible cables, existing research only considers the position and vibration control of a single crane. Motivated by this restriction, we propose a novel adaptive fault-tolerant boundary control scheme that consistently transports payloads of multiple overhead cranes to the target position and simultaneously suppresses the deflections of multiple cables with time-varying actuator faults. The time-varying actuator faults are more in line with practical engineering than time-invariant faults considered in other existing works. The designed control scheme can provide a theoretical basis and feasible solution for the coordinated control of multiple overhead cranes in various application scenarios. The scheme can be extended to address the coordinated control issue of other flexible mechanical systems that have string structures and can be modeled by PDEs. In the future, we will focus on time delay and signal quantization issues in the communication network.
