Abstract:The improper disposal of plastic waste raises significant concerns due to their severe threat to ecosystems and public health. Artificial photosynthesis, compared with the conventional strategies (e.g., pyrolysis) operated under harsh conditions, has emerged as a green and sustainable approach to convert plastic waste into commodity chemicals under ambient conditions. In this study, we have developed a partially oxidized CuIn5S8 nanosheet photocatalyst (O-CuIn5S8) to promote the conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into value-added chemicals while producing hydrogen fuel. After oxygen incorporation, the as-obtained O-CuIn5S8 catalyst demonstrates significantly improved activity, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 2.57±0.02 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 7 times higher than that of the pristine CuIn5S8. Furthermore, O-CuIn5S8 allows an effective transformation of pretreated PET into a range of valuable commodity chemicals, including formate, acetate, and glycolate, via a hole-induced oxidation mechanism. This work paves the way for the rational development of photocatalysts to manage plastic pollution and meanwhile reclaim the carbon source within PET plastic waste.

Abstract:Photocatalytic plastic waste upcycling into value-added feedstock is a promising way to mitigate the environmental issues caused by the nondegradable nature of plastic waste. Here, we developed a MoS2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst that can efficiently upcycle poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into valuable organic chemicals. Interestingly, the conversion mechanism is concentration-dependent. For instance, at a low ethylene glycol (EG) concentration (7.96 mM), acetate is the main product. Unexpectedly, the conversion of PET water bottle hydrolysate with only 7.96 mM ethylene glycol (EG) can produce a 4 times higher amount of acetate (704.59 nmol) than the conversion of 300 mM EG (174.50 nmol), while at a higher EG concentration (300 mM), formate is the dominant product. Herein, a 40 times higher EG concentration (300 mM compared to 7.96 mM) would produce only ∼3 times more formate (179 nmol compared to 51.86 nmol). In addition, under natural sunlight conditions, comparable amounts of liquid and gaseous products are produced when commercial PET plastics are employed. Overall, the photocatalytic PET conversion process is quite efficient under a low concentration of EG in PET hydrolysate, indicating the enormous potential of this photocatalysis strategy for real plastics upcycling.

Abstract:There is no satisfactory treatment technology for plastic waste, which has been a global challenge so far. Here, we report a photoelectrochemical approach for efficient valorization of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic to produce formate coupled with green hydrogen production. Due to the cocatalytic effect of nickel phosphate (Ni-Pi) on α-Fe 2 O 3 photoanode, the Faradaic efficiency of PET hydrolysate solution to formate reached as high as 87% in aqueous electrolyte without any additional oxidant. In addition, an integrated PET oxidation-hydrogen production system achieved a photocurrent density of 1.5 mA/cm 2 at a cell voltage of 1.1 V, which is 270 mV lower than the conventional water splitting. Furthermore, we also demonstrate that high selective formate production was also applicable to real-world waste PET plastic. This work provides a sustainable paradigm on photoelectrochemical strategy to upcycle waste PET plastic into value-added chemicals and green hydrogen.

Abstract:Chemical upcycling of plastic wastes into valuable chemicals is a promising strategy for resolving plastic pollution, but economically viable methods currently are still lacking. Here, we report one‐pot hydrogenolysis of PET plastic into p‐xylene with an excellent yield (99.8 %) over a robust non‐precious Cu‐based catalyst, CuZn/Al2O3, in the absence of alcohol solvents. The presence of Zn species promotes the dispersion of Cu0 and increases the ratio of Cu+/Cu0, whereas the synergistic effect of Cu0 and Cu+ leads to a superior performance in the conversion of PET. The combination of GC‐MS, 13C CP MAS NMR, 2D 1H‐13C CP HETCOR NMR spectroscopy and kinetic studies for the first time demonstrates 4‐methyl benzyl alcohol as an important reaction intermediate in the hydrogenolysis of PET. Mechanistic studies indicate that the conversion of PET mainly follows a hydrogenolysis process, involving the cleavage of ester bonds to alcohols and the C‐O bond cleavage of alcohols to alkanes. This work not only brings new insight for understanding the upgrading pathway of PET, but also provides a guidance for the design of high‐performance non‐precious catalysts for the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes.

Abstract:The electrochemical upconversion of plastic wastes has been demonstrated as an attractive alternative to the sluggish OER process to simultaneously produce valued chemicals and reduce the energy consumption. Herein, we report a photovoltaic-driven electrocatalytic strategy to upcycle poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into value-added formic acid products and co-produce green hydrogen. The waste PET was dissolved by KOH and then directly pumped into an electrochemical flow reactor (EFR) including CuO nanowires (NWs) anode and Pt/C 20% cathode (PV-EFR) and driven by the commercial silicon photovoltaic (PV) panels. This PV-EFR system exhibits a solar-to-chemical (STC) efficiency of 32.6% under AM 1.5 G simulated sunlight (100 mW cm-2), and high Faradaic efficiencies (FE, ∼ 67% for formic acid, and ∼90% for green hydrogen) with exceptional 120 h long-term stability in the STC mode. Such a photovoltaic-driven electrocatalytic strategy exhibits great potential for the rational utilization of renewable energy sources to produce high-value chemicals and fuels by upconversion of waste plastics.

Abstract:Plastic valorization presents a significantly untapped opportunity to address environmental issues while creating the necessary economic push for a circular carbon economy. Compared with the conventional routes for processing plastics (e.g., pyrolysis and gasification), a photoreforming strategy, namely, photocatalytic plastic oxidation paired with water splitting, aims to achieve plastic valorization into commodity chemicals under mild conditions while offering hydrogen fuels. Here, we implement MoS2-tipped CdS nanorod photocatalysts in an aqueous medium to reform pretreated plastics that range from polyesters (e.g., polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) to polyolefins (e.g., polyethylene (PE)). The architecture of MoS2/CdS takes advantage of the anisotropic morphology and rapid charge transfer features of nanorods, by collecting the electrons at the MoS2 tip for hydrogen evolution and utilizing the entire sidewall of CdS nanorods with rich holes toward plastic oxidation. It is shown that continuous H2 can be evolved from photoreforming of PLA, PET (commercial PET granules and real-world PET bottles), and PE, while these plastic substrates are accordingly converted into a series of valuable chemicals. This work provides an effective way to harness solar energy to realize the transformation of trash (plastics) to treasure (gaseous/liquid chemicals).

Abstract:Much attention has been drawn to develop efficient poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) recycling methods. Reported here is the solar-driven PET recycling coupled with H2 production with carbonized polymer dots-graphitic carbon nitride (CPDs-CN) as catalyst. PET plastic is a “greener” alternative feedstock where its hydrolytic monomer ethylene glycol is converted into high added-value chemicals, mainly including glycolic acid, glycolaldehyde and ethanol; meanwhile, H2 is produced from water splitting. The monomer terephthalic acid yield reaches 304.7 ± 17.2 μmol, exceeding the value of the catalyst-free group nearly twofold. Increased H2 production rate upon hybridization with CPDs is achieved (1034 ± 134 vs. 291 ± 35 μmol g–1 h–1, respectively). The adopted strategy allows plastic waste to be used as a valuable feedstock for the sustainable production of value-added solar chemicals and solar fuels.

Abstract:Abstract Plastic wastes represent a largely untapped resource for manufacturing chemicals and fuels, particularly considering their environmental and biological threats. Here we report electrocatalytic upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic to valuable commodity chemicals (potassium diformate and terephthalic acid) and H 2 fuel. Preliminary techno-economic analysis suggests the profitability of this process when the ethylene glycol (EG) component of PET is selectively electrooxidized to formate (>80% selectivity) at high current density (>100 mA cm −2 ). A nickel-modified cobalt phosphide (CoNi 0.25 P) electrocatalyst is developed to achieve a current density of 500 mA cm −2 at 1.8 V in a membrane-electrode assembly reactor with >80% of Faradaic efficiency and selectivity to formate. Detailed characterizations reveal the in-situ evolution of CoNi 0.25 P catalyst into a low-crystalline metal oxy(hydroxide) as an active state during EG oxidation, which might be responsible for its advantageous performances. This work demonstrates a sustainable way to implement waste PET upcycling to value-added products.

Abstract:Upcycling plastic wastes into value-added chemicals is a promising approach to put end-of-life plastic wastes back into their ecocycle. As one of the polyesters that is used daily, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste is employed here as the model substrate. Herein, a nickel (Ni)-based catalyst was prepared via electrochemically depositing copper (Cu) species on Ni foam (NiCu/NF). The NiCu/NF formed Cu/CuO and Ni/NiO/Ni(OH)2 core-shell structures before electrolysis and reconstructed into NiOOH and CuOOH/Cu(OH)2 active species during the ethylene glycol (EG) oxidation. After oxidation, the Cu and Ni species evolved into more reduced species. An indirect mechanism was identified as the main EG oxidation (EGOR) mechanism. In EGOR, NiCu60s/NF catalyst exhibited an optimal Faradaic efficiency (FE, 95.8%) and yield rate (0.70 mmol cm-2 h-1) for formate production. Also, over 80% FE of formate was achieved when a commercial PET plastic powder hydrolysate was applied. Furthermore, commercial PET plastic water bottle waste was employed as a substrate for electrocatalytic upcycling, and pure terephthalic acid (TPA) was recovered only after 1 h electrolysis. Lastly, density functional theory (DFT) calculation revealed that the key role of Cu was significantly reducing the Gibbs free-energy barrier (ΔG) of EGOR's rate-determining step (RDS), promoting catalysts' dynamic evolution, and facilitating the C-C bond cleavage.

Abstract:With the escalating demand and utilization of plastics, considerable attention has been given to controlling plastic pollution. Among these methodologies, photocatalytic upcycling of plastic has emerged as a promising method for plastic management due to its energy-saving and eco-friendly properties. In the past several years, great efforts have been devoted to the photocatalytic conversion of a variety of commercial plastic types. These encouraging endeavors foreshadow the continued progression and application in this field. In this review, recent advancements in the photocatalytic upcycling of plastics are reviewed. The fundamentals and principles of photocatalytic deconstruction of plastics are first introduced. Then, we summarize the works on the reforming of different types of plastic, including polyolefins, polyesters, and other types. Finally, some challenges and possible solutions are provided for the development of photocatalytic upcycling of plastics.

Abstract:The plastic waste issue has posed a series of formidable challenges for the ecological environment and human health. While conventional recycling strategies often lead to plastic down-cycling, the electrochemical strategy of recovering valuable monomers enables an ideal, circular plastic economy. Here a corrosion synthesized single atom Pt1/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst with part-per-million noble Pt loading for highly efficient and selective upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into valuable chemicals (potassium diformate and terephthalic acid) and green hydrogen is reported. Electro-oxidation of PET hydrolysate, ethylene glycol (EG), to formate is processed with high Faraday efficiency (FE) and selectivity (>90%) at the current density close to 1000 mA cm-2 (1.444 V vs RHE). The in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations provide insights into the mechanism and the understanding of the high efficiency. Remarkably, the electro-oxidation of EG at the ampere-level current density is also successfully illustrated by using a membrane-electrode assembly with high FEs to formate integrated with hydrogen production for 500 h of continuous operation. This process allows valuable chemical production at high space-time yield and is highly profitable (588-700 $ ton-1 PET), showing an industrial perspective on single-atom catalysis of electrochemical plastic upcycling.

Abstract:Waste plastics have posed enormous to the environment, but their recycling, especially polyethylene terephthalate plastics, was still a huge challenge. Here, CdS/CeO 2 was used as the photocatalyst to promote the degradation of PET-12 plastics by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) synergistic photocatalytic system. The results showed that 10 % CdS/CeO 2 had the best performance under the illumination condition, and the weight loss rate of PET-12 could reach 93.92 % after adding 3 mM PMS. The effects of important parameters (PMS dose and co-existing anions) on PET-12 degradation were systematically studied, and the excellent performance of the photocatalytic-activated PMS system was verified by comparison experiments. SO 4 •− contributed the most to the degradation performance of PET-12 plastics, which was demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching experiments. Furthermore, the results of GC showed that the gas products including CO, and CH 4 . This indicated that the mineralized products could be further reduced to hydrocarbon fuel under the action of the photocatalyst. This job supplied a new idea for the photocatalytic treatment of waste microplastics in the water, which will help recycle waste plastics and recycle carbon resources.

The Science of The Total Environment

Abstract:The substantial production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) products, coupled with high abandonment rates, results in significant environmental pollution and resource wastage. This has prompted global attention to the development of rational strategies for PET waste treatment. In the context of renewability and sustainability, catalytic chemical technology provides an effective means to recycle and upcycle PET waste into valuable resources. In this review, we initially provide an overview of strategies employed in the thermocatalytic process to recycle PET waste into valuable carbon materials, fuels and typical refined chemicals. The effect of catalysts on the quality and quantity of specific products is highlighted. Next, we introduce the development of renewable-energy-driven electrocatalytic and photocatalytic systems for sustainable PET waste upcycling, focusing on rational catalysts, innovative catalytic system design, and corresponding underlying catalytic mechanisms. Moreover, we discuss advantages and disadvantages of three chemical catalytic strategies. Finally, existing limitations and outlook toward controllable selectivity and yield enhancement of value-added products and PET upvaluing technology for scale-up applications are proposed. This review aims to inspire the exploration of waste-to-treasure technologies for renewable-energy-driven waste management toward a circular economy.

Abstract:Photothermal catalysis driven by clean solar energy efficiently converts plastic waste into high-value-added products. The catalytic process involves the transformation of solar energy to chemical energy. However, designing photothermal catalysts with a high conversion efficiency and catalytic activity remains considerably challenging. In this study, a 2 nanostructure is fabricated. It acts both as the photothermal reagent and the catalyst, displaying high photothermal conversion efficiency, catalytic activity, and stability in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycolysis. SiO 2 -coated c-ZIF-8 effectively reduces the thermal radiation loss of the carbon material, thus enhancing the local thermal effect of the catalytic system. Consequently, the conversion efficiency of PET achieved using photothermal catalysis is 3.4 times higher than that of thermal catalysis under the same conditions. An economic efficiency analysis proves that photothermal catalysis can save 6390000 kW·h of electricity and reduce up to 3089.59 tons of CO 2 emissions for every 10000 tons of PET recycled. Therefore, the development of clean energy-driven photothermal catalysis technology could be a potential solution for the upcycling of waste plastics. Abstract:Electrocatalytic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste upgrading is crucial for developing a circular plastics economy and solving the energy crisis, but achieving efficient PET upgrading at an industrial-scale current density remains a formidable challenge. In our work, Ni-MOF@MnCo-OH catalyst was prepared by designing hierarchical heterostructure and incorporating the concept of multi-metal sites, wherein the Ni-MOF can be derived from PET plastic. Benefiting from the advantages of material design, the catalyst demonstrates excellent adsorption capabilities for both OH ad and ethylene glycol (EG), while also enhancing the electron transfer capability of Ni-MOF. We achieve a high Faradaic efficiency (∼80 %) during PET plastic upgrading at industrial-scale current density (300 mA·cm −2 at 1.43 V vs. RHE) with Ni-MOF@MnCo-OH. Moreover, through theoretical calculations and in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, we have further elucidated the mechanism of ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). Notably, glycolic acid has been identified as a vital intermediate during the electrical oxidation of EG. This work provides a viable and eco-friendly approach to enhance the value of PET waste through sustainable means.

Abstract:Degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics by the traditional technologies usually requires high energy consumption and encounters poor product selectivity. Herein, we report the photoconversion of PET into carbon dioxide with 100% selectivity by in-plane heterostructured NiO/Fe2O3 nanosheets in pure water under normal temperature and pressure. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectra demonstrate the construction of the Z-scheme heterojunction, which can help to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs for enhanced PET conversion property. Various in-situ characterization techniques and experiments unveil that PET is photodegraded into carbon dioxide by the photogenerated holes, while oxygen is photoreduced into water by the photoexcited electrons. This work will open new avenues toward resolving the white pollution crisis.

Abstract:Photocatalyst-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) degradation of pollutants is already widely used for wastewater treatment under visible light. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is widely used in daily life, but waste plastics have an irreversible negative impact on the environment. In this paper, the ZIF-67/g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction catalyst was synthesized as a photocatalyst to achieve a good effect on PET degradation in coordination with PMS. The results indicated that PET could be degraded up to 60.63 ± 2.12 % under the combined effect of catalyst, PMS, and light. In this experiment, the influence of catalyst-to-plastic ratio, PMS concentration, aqueous pH, and inorganic anions on plastic degradation by the photocatalytic synergistic PMS system was discussed, and the excellent performance of this system for degrading PET was highlighted through a comparative test. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and free radical quenching experiments demonstrated that SO4•- contributes the largest amount to the PET degradation performance. Furthermore, results from gas chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) indicated that the plastic degradation products include CO, CH4, and organic small-molecule liquid fuels. Finally, a possible mechanism for the light/PMS system to degrade PET in water was suggested. This paper provides a feasible solution to treat waste microplastics in water.

Abstract:Production of fuel and chemicals from plastic waste is one of the effective ways to upcycle spent plastics, which is an interesting topic and of significance for green and sustainable development. Herein, we demonstrate a highly efficient catalyst, TiO 2 nanoparticle supported Ru nanocatalyst (Ru/TiO 2 ), for upcycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to alkanes in the presence of H 2 and water. Under the optimal conditions (200 °C, 60 bar H 2 , and small amount of H 2 O), PET could completely convert into alkanes, dominated with cyclohexane and methane. It was indicated that the strong interaction between the TiO 2 support and Ru nanoparticles made electrons flow from the TiO 2 support to the Ru nanoparticles, which thus rendered Ru/TiO 2 to have ability to simultaneously catalyze PET hydrolysis and intermediate hydrogenation. This work realizes the transformation of PET to alkanes, which provides a promising way to chemically upcycle PET.

Abstract:The massive consumption of plastic is posing severe pollution-related challenges globally. As the most abundant polyester plastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste represents a largely untapped resource for generating chemicals and fuels. However, the current widespread use of alkali/organic solvents and the complex processing of PET reduce its environmental sustainability. Herein, a novel and simple one-pot strategy was first reported for the catalytic conversion of PET into H2 fuel and terephthalic acid in a pure-water system under mild conditions. A high H2 yield of 19.97 mol/kgPET and carbon conversion efficiency of 97.22% were obtained for the Ru-5ZnO/ mesoporous carbon (MEC) catalyst at a low temperature of 250 degrees C. This process proceeds through tandem catalytic reactions with an initial PET depolymerization step, followed by in situ aqueous phase reforming (APR) of ethylene glycol of Ru. Remarkably, ZnO inhibited the deactivation of Ru/MEC in the PET depolymerization stage, causing an increase in H2 production from the in situ APR stage. Importantly, this strategy was successfully applied to four types of real-world PET waste and their mixtures, demonstrating that it has considerable potential in practical applications and provides a sustainable and clean solution to the plastic waste problem.
Boosted Photoreforming of Plastic Waste via Defect-Rich NiPS 3 Nanosheets

Abstract:Sustainable conversion of plastic waste to mitigate environmental threats and reclaim waste value is important. Ambient-condition photoreforming is practically attractive to convert waste to hydrogen (H2); however, it has poor performance because of mutual constraint between proton reduction and substrate oxidation. Here, we realize a cooperative photoredox using defect-rich chalcogenide nanosheet-coupled photocatalysts, e.g., d-NiPS3/CdS, to give an ultrahigh H2 evolution of ∼40 mmol gcat-1 h-1 and organic acid yield up to 78 μmol within 9 h, together with excellent stability beyond 100 h in photoreforming of commercial waste plastic poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). Significantly, these metrics represent one of the most efficient plastic photoreforming reported. In situ ultrafast spectroscopic studies confirm a charge transfer-mediated reaction mechanism in which d-NiPS3 rapidly extracts electrons from CdS to boost H2 evolution, favoring hole-dominated substrate oxidation to improve overall efficiency. This work opens practical avenues for converting plastic waste into fuels and chemicals.
