Abstract:Waste plastics have posed enormous to the environment, but their recycling, especially polyethylene terephthalate plastics, was still a huge challenge. Here, CdS/CeO 2 was used as the photocatalyst to promote the degradation of PET-12 plastics by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) synergistic photocatalytic system. The results showed that 10 % CdS/CeO 2 had the best performance under the illumination condition, and the weight loss rate of PET-12 could reach 93.92 % after adding 3 mM PMS. The effects of important parameters (PMS dose and co-existing anions) on PET-12 degradation were systematically studied, and the excellent performance of the photocatalytic-activated PMS system was verified by comparison experiments. SO 4 •− contributed the most to the degradation performance of PET-12 plastics, which was demonstrated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical quenching experiments. Furthermore, the results of GC showed that the gas products including CO, and CH 4 . This indicated that the mineralized products could be further reduced to hydrocarbon fuel under the action of the photocatalyst. This job supplied a new idea for the photocatalytic treatment of waste microplastics in the water, which will help recycle waste plastics and recycle carbon resources.

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, widely used for packaging owing to its excellent properties, has become a major contributor to plastic waste, for which satisfactory recycling and upgrading treatment technologies are lacking. In this study, Co-doped CeO 2 was used as a photocatalyst to degrade PET plastics in water, and PET degradation was measured according to the weight loss rate. Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) addition to the photocatalytic system enabled the degradation of 53.82 ± 4.48 % of PET plastics, highlighting the excellent PET plastic degradation capability of the photocatalytic PMS system. The study investigated the effects of the catalyst-to-plastic ratio, PMS concentration, initial pH, inorganic anions, humic acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) addition on the catalytic oxidation system. Contrast experiments revealed that H 2 O 2 addition to the photocatalysis/PMS oxidation system further improved the PET plastic degradation efficiency (91.61 ± 1.50 %). Liquid product analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance, and free radical quenching experiments confirmed that SO 4 − played the most significant role in PET degradation. Finally, a possible mechanism for the degradation of PET plastics in water using the photocatalysis/PMS oxidation system was proposed.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental concern in recent years. Owing to their minute dimensions, conventional plastic remediation approaches are inadequate for addressing the challenges posed by MPs. Herein, spherical (BOC-S) and nanosheet (BOC-N) BiOCl photocatalysts were prepared and applied to the degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) MPs after hydrothermal pretreatment. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of pretreated PET MPs using BOC-S and BOC-N photocatalysts was 8.8 and 6.9 times that of the unpretreated MPs under the same conditions. Comparative experiments confirmed the excellent performance of the photocatalysis-pretreatment system. The creation of pores on the surface of pretreated PET MPs facilitates the entry of active substances into the interior to cause damage, while the enhancement of hydrophilicity and specific surface area facilitates the contact between the catalyst and PET MPs, thus increasing the degradation efficiency. Free radical trapping experiments revealed that hydroxyl radicals (·OH) produced by photocatalysis had the greatest influence on the degradation performance of pretreated PET MPs. Finally, a possible photocatalytic degradation mechanism for PET MPs was proposed. This research offers a novel perspective on MPs degradation, providing valuable insights for advancing the efficacy of the process.

Abstract:Fiber‐based microplastic (FMP) pollution in the wastewater of the textile industry and urban sewage has become an emerging issue and a potential threat to marine life and human health. However, most reported reduction strategies, such as physical adsorption/filtration and chemical‐catalytic degradation are limited by the secondary pollution caused by the desorption of FMPs and inferior degradation performance. Advanced technologies for efficient FMP control remain largely insufficient and underdeveloped. This work reports a Z‐scheme Bi2O3@N‐TiO2 heterojunction synthesized by a solvothermal and wet‐impregnation strategy. Bi2O3@N‐TiO2 degrades ≈10.23 ± 1.91 wt% of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)‐FMPs (a major FMP existing in the environment) at pH = 9, which is nearly three times higher than that at pH = 7. Experimental results show that the hydrolysis of PET‐FMPs in alkaline media is the main reason for the superior performance. Importantly, the hydrophilic, weight‐average molecular weight and crystallinity of PET‐FMP are the key factors affecting the photocatalytic degradation performance of PET‐FMPs. This study demonstrates an eco‐friendly strategy for remediation of FMP contamination. A Z‐scheme Bi2O3@N‐TiO2 heterojunction is fabricated through a solvothermal, wet‐impregnation, and calcination strategy. An impressive photocatalytic degradation performance (weight loss = 10.23 ± 1.91%) of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)‐fiber‐based microplastics (FMPs), which are defined as plastic fragments with diameters less than 5 mm and a high aspect ratio, can be achieved in alkaline media. This work is expected to provide guidance for the effective elimination of PET‐FMPs.

Abstract:Photocatalytic plastic waste upcycling into value-added feedstock is a promising way to mitigate the environmental issues caused by the nondegradable nature of plastic waste. Here, we developed a MoS2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst that can efficiently upcycle poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into valuable organic chemicals. Interestingly, the conversion mechanism is concentration-dependent. For instance, at a low ethylene glycol (EG) concentration (7.96 mM), acetate is the main product. Unexpectedly, the conversion of PET water bottle hydrolysate with only 7.96 mM ethylene glycol (EG) can produce a 4 times higher amount of acetate (704.59 nmol) than the conversion of 300 mM EG (174.50 nmol), while at a higher EG concentration (300 mM), formate is the dominant product. Herein, a 40 times higher EG concentration (300 mM compared to 7.96 mM) would produce only ∼3 times more formate (179 nmol compared to 51.86 nmol). In addition, under natural sunlight conditions, comparable amounts of liquid and gaseous products are produced when commercial PET plastics are employed. Overall, the photocatalytic PET conversion process is quite efficient under a low concentration of EG in PET hydrolysate, indicating the enormous potential of this photocatalysis strategy for real plastics upcycling.

[Enhancing PET Degradation Efficiency Through Fusing Carbohydrate-Binding Modules in LCC-ICCG].

Abstract:Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a largely-produced polymer worldwide. However, its extensive waste generation and resistance to degradation pose significant environmental concerns. Consequently, there is considerable interest in researching enzymatic degradation of PET. Relevant studies have shown that the addition of a carbohydrate binding module (CBM) can increase the affinity between the enzyme and the substrate, enhancing the enzyme's degradation ability. In order to develop more efficient PET hydrolytic enzymes, this study introduced carbohydrate binding domains (CBMs) from different families with different substrate affinities into the PET-degrading enzyme LCC-ICCG. High crystallinity PET powder and amorphous PET film were used as substrates to characterize the degradation efficiency of the modified enzymes, aiming to explore the enzyme with the optimal degradation ability. The results showed that the fusion of type B CBM reduced the degradation rate and Tm value of the enzyme towards PET, while the introduction of type A and type C CBMs significantly improved the degradation rate of the enzyme towards the film-like substrate. The degradation rate and Tm value of PET were also enhanced, especially with the fusion enzyme LCC-ICCG-CBM9-2, which showed an over 10-fold increase in the degradation rate compared to the original enzyme LCC-ICCG. Therefore, this study demonstrates that by introducing type A and type C CBMs, the degradation rate and thermal stability of LCC-ICCG towards film-like PET can be improved, addressing the issue of its low activity and enabling more effective PET degradation. This research provides support for plastic degradation technology and contributes to environmental conservation efforts.

Abstract:The improper disposal of plastic waste raises significant concerns due to their severe threat to ecosystems and public health. Artificial photosynthesis, compared with the conventional strategies (e.g., pyrolysis) operated under harsh conditions, has emerged as a green and sustainable approach to convert plastic waste into commodity chemicals under ambient conditions. In this study, we have developed a partially oxidized CuIn5S8 nanosheet photocatalyst (O-CuIn5S8) to promote the conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into value-added chemicals while producing hydrogen fuel. After oxygen incorporation, the as-obtained O-CuIn5S8 catalyst demonstrates significantly improved activity, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 2.57±0.02 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 7 times higher than that of the pristine CuIn5S8. Furthermore, O-CuIn5S8 allows an effective transformation of pretreated PET into a range of valuable commodity chemicals, including formate, acetate, and glycolate, via a hole-induced oxidation mechanism. This work paves the way for the rational development of photocatalysts to manage plastic pollution and meanwhile reclaim the carbon source within PET plastic waste.

Abstract:Degradation of polyolefin (PE) plastic by a traditional chemical method requires a high pressure and a high temperature but generates complex products. Here, sulfur vacancy-rich ZnIn2S4 and hydroxy-rich ZnIn2S4 were rationally fabricated to realize photocatalytic degradation of PE in an aqueous solution under mild conditions. The results reveal that the optimized photocatalyst could degrade PE into CO2 and CO, and PE had a weight loss of 84.5% after reaction for 60 h. Systematic experiments confirm that the synergetic effect of hydroxyl groups and S vacancies contributes to improve the photocatalytic degradation properties of plastic wastes. In-depth investigation illustrates that the active radicals attack (h+ and •OH) weak spots (C-H and C-C bonds) of the PE chain to form CO2, which is further selectively photoreduced to CO. Multimodule synergistic tandem catalysis can further improve the utilization value of plastic wastes; for example, product CO2/CO in the plastic degradation process can be converted in situ into HCOOH by coupling with electrocatalytic technology.

Abstract:Plastic waste management has emerged as a critical environmental issue due to the exponential increase in plastic consumption worldwide. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is extensively used in the production of water bottles, which constitutes a significant fraction of the plastic waste. PET recycling is a challenging task due to the lack of efficient and cost-effective depolymerization methods. In this study, we developed a microwave (MW) catalytic depolymerization method for PET recycling using modified zinc oxide loaded with manganese oxide as a cocatalyst. The modified Mn3O4/ZnO catalyst presents high efficiency in depolymerizing PET into its monomers with only 0.4 wt % ratio of the catalyst to PET at 175 °C for 5 min, resulting in 100% conversion of PET and 88% selectivity toward bis-hydroxyethyl terephthalate monomers. It is believed that Mn3O4 provides additional Lewis acid sites, promoting the dissociation of glycol from PET, and the MW irradiation plays a crucial role in rapidly heating the ethylene glycol and the catalyst, thereby accelerating the PET depolymerization process. In addition, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst facilitates its easy separation from the reaction mixture for reuse, simplifying the catalyst recovery process and enabling cost-effective and sustainable PET recycling. Thus, this study provides an innovative and sustainable solution for PET recycling, contributing toward the circular economy and mitigating the environmental impact of plastic waste.

Abstract:Plastic pollution poses a significant challenge to environmental conservation. Efficient recycling of plastic is a key strategy to address this issue. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), commonly found in plastic bottles, represents a substantial portion of plastic waste. Consequently, the efficient degradation and recycling of PET is crucial for the sustainable development of society. However, the implementation of methods for PET depolymerization and recycling typically necessitates alkaline/acidic pre‐treatment and significant energy input for heating. Here, we propose a gentle, and highly efficient photocatalysis approach for selectively degrading PET plastic waste into terephthalic acid (TPA) in high yield (up to 99%) using cost‐effective iron salts. Notably, this method achieved excellent selectivity with high TON and TOF values, applying oxygen or air as environmentally friendly oxidants. In addition, the solvent can be recycled without compromising the TPA yield, and large‐scale reactions can be performed smoothly.

Abstract:As the rapid development of the textile and plastic industries, non-degradable polyester fibers have become one of the major environmental and resource issues globally. In this study, we prepared a P-N heterojunction Ni 2 P-Cu 3 P/TiO 2 /C nanofibers (NFs) photocatalyst through a combination technique of electrospinning, carbonization, hydrothermal, and phosphorylation. The N i2 P-Cu 3 P/TiO 2 /C composite nanofibers exhibit excellent light absorption capacity across the entire optical spectrum. Also, the layered structure of Cu 3 P-Ni 2 P facilitates the reflection of light between the surfaces of the fibers, enhancing light absorption. The coupling of Ni 2 P and Cu 3 P establishes a P-N heterojunction at the photocatalytic interface, promoting the separation of charge carriers, suppressing the recombination of charge carriers and extending the lifetime of charges. Accordingly, the Ni 2 P-Cu 3 P/TiO 2 /C NFs demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance. During photocatalytic degradation of PET waste textiles, the hydrogen evolution amount reached 206.6 "μmo" "l" _("H" _"2" ) "g" _"Sub" ^"-1" after 48 hours, with a weight loss rate of 15% in polyester fibers. Impressively, the addition of CTAB during the catalysis process increased the hydrogen evolution amount to 321"μmo" "l" _("H" _"2" ) "g" _"Sub" ^"-1" , which is 1.5 times higher than that without CTAB. Meanwhile, the weight loss rate of polyester fibers reached 18%. This confirms the feasibility of CTAB in enhancing the photocatalytic degradation of PET fibers. Furthermore, the catalyst is easy to separate and recover from the solution, maintaining stable hydrogen production performance even after multiple cycles. This work provides a low-cost strategy for the rational design of efficient and recyclable composite photocatalysts, offering a pathway for the recycling of polyester waste.

Abstract:Chemical upgrading as a recycling technology for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste plastic is an effective way to help solve the current challenges of plastic pollution. Catalytic methanolysis technology enables the depolymerization of PET into high-value dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) monomers under relatively mild conditions, thereby achieving closed-loop recycling of PET waste plastic. In this study, we compared the catalytic efficiency of Cu/SiO 2 catalysts prepared by three different methods for the depolymerization of PET to DMT. Cu/SiO 2 -IM, prepared through the impregnation method, exhibited the highest activity, with PET conversion and DMT selectivity reaching 92.35% and 99.0%, respectively, at 200 °C without any initial gas pressure. The exceptional performance of Cu/SiO 2 -IM can be attributed to its small metal particles, substantial specific surface area, a high ratio of Brønsted acid sites (BAS) to Lewis acid sites (LAS) and the balance of Cu + and Cu 0 active sites on the catalytic surface. Furthermore, possible reaction mechanisms of Cu-based catalysts in the catalytic methanolysis of PET were investigated: Cu + initiates the attack on the carbon groups along the long PET chain and enhances the nucleophilic attack during the depolymerization reaction, while Cu 0 readily interacts with the hydroxyl group of methanol, leading to the formation of a new ester group between the oxygen atom in the hydroxyl group of methanol and the carbon atom in the CO group of PET polyester. This low-cost and high-efficiency catalytic methanolysis study provides a practical approach to PET waste plastic recycling.

Preparation of heterojunction C3N4/WO3 photocatalyst for degradation of microplastics in water

Abstract:In this study, a WO3/g-C3N4 composite photocatalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal method and characterized for its potential application in photocatalytic H2 generation from PET degradation. XRD analysis revealed that the hexagonal WO3 crystal structure was achieved after 10 h of hydrothermal time, with particles of suitable size for uniform loading on the g-C3N4 surface. SEM images showed the successful loading of WO3 nanorods onto the g-C3N4 surface, significantly increasing the specific surface area. FTIR and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy confirmed the formation of a Z-type heterojunction between WO3 and g-C3N4. Photoluminescence measurements indicated a reduced rate of electron-hole pair recombination in the composite. The 30% WO3/g-C3N4 composite demonstrated a high H2 evolution rate of 14.21 mM and excellent stability in PET solution under visible light irradiation. 1H NMR and EPR spectroscopy analyses revealed the degradation of PET into small molecular compounds and the generation of active radicals, including ·O2-, during the reaction. Overall, the WO3/g-C3N4 composite exhibited promising potential for photocatalytic H2 production and PET degradation.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Sufficiently utilizing photogenerated electron/hole pairs for a coupled redox enables green, sustainable, and low-cost photocatalysis. Herein, a series of MoS2/CdxZn1−xS photocatalysts with uniform 2D/2D structure are reported for solar water–reductive H2 products coupled with the degradation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic. The MoS2/Cd0.5Zn0.5S heterojunction with a loading mass of 4.3 wt% MoS2 exhibits the best H2 evolution rate of 15.90 mmol g−1 h−1 in an aqueous solution due to its appropriate redox ability, great light absorption, and carrier separation abilities. Then, the oxidation products of PET are analyzed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy, which demonstrates the PET being efficiently degraded to molecule compounds, such as formate and acetate. The work provides a feasible solution to the problem of plastic pollution and meets the demand for sustainable clean energy simultaneously. </section>

Abstract:A novel AgI/Ag6Si2O7/PET Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst with strong redox capability was fabricated via a facile successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method to degrade methyl orange (MO). Compared with Ag6Si2O7/PET and AgI/PET, the prepared AgI/Ag6Si2O7/PET heterojunction exhibits superior photocatalytic performance compared with Ag6Si2O7/PET and AgI/PET under visible light rising from its strong interfacial coupling effects. The degradation rate constant of the optimal AgI/Ag6Si2O7/PET is as high up to 0.144 min-1, which is approximately 5.5 and 9.6 times over that of Ag6Si2O7/PET and AgI/PET, respectively. The radical capture experiments and ESR characterization demonstrate that h+ and ·O2- are two major oxidative species responsible for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The PL, photocurrent and EIS analyses indicate that AgI/Ag6Si2O7/PET shows enhanced electron-hole pair separation efficiency. This phenomenon is related to three aspects, namely the high light-harvesting efficiency, greatly enhanced accessibility to active site, and the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction structures which effectively improve the photoelectron-hole separation efficiency and the redox capacity of the photocatalyst. Our work, therefore, provides a novel insight into the development of heterojunction composite with boosted photocatalytic activity, excellent stability, and reusability for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Drinking water disinfection processes have made remarkable contributions to keeping drinking water safe. However, these processes can lead to the formation of numerous harmful disinfection by-products (DBPs). Therefore, it is crucial to implement effective measures to minimize the production of DBPs. Herein, @NH 2 -MIL-53(Fe) (PNM) composite was successfully prepared via surface etching and solvothermal method. The material exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for DBPs and their precursors at the photo-Fenton system formed by PNM and trace H 2 O 2 , which system achieved 99% degradation of 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (2,6-DCBQ) in 30 min, and more than 98% and 95% degradation of phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) in 60 min. The PNM shows more than 90% degradation of DBPs even in real water. Based on free radical trapping experiments, a possible catalytic mechanism was proposed. ·OH and holes were the main active species in the catalytic process. Meanwhile, using UPLC-QTOF and GC–MS to identify intermediate degradation products and Toxtree software to assess toxicity. The PNM maintained a degradation rate over 95% after 5 cycles which demonstrates a remarkable recyclability. This study achieves the reuse of waste PET and opens a new way in exploring the development of eco-friendly photocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Photothermal catalysis driven by clean solar energy efficiently converts plastic waste into high-value-added products. The catalytic process involves the transformation of solar energy to chemical energy. However, designing photothermal catalysts with a high conversion efficiency and catalytic activity remains considerably challenging. In this study, a 2 nanostructure is fabricated. It acts both as the photothermal reagent and the catalyst, displaying high photothermal conversion efficiency, catalytic activity, and stability in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycolysis. SiO 2 -coated c-ZIF-8 effectively reduces the thermal radiation loss of the carbon material, thus enhancing the local thermal effect of the catalytic system. Consequently, the conversion efficiency of PET achieved using photothermal catalysis is 3.4 times higher than that of thermal catalysis under the same conditions. An economic efficiency analysis proves that photothermal catalysis can save 6390000 kW·h of electricity and reduce up to 3089.59 tons of CO 2 emissions for every 10000 tons of PET recycled. Therefore, the development of clean energy-driven photothermal catalysis technology could be a potential solution for the upcycling of waste plastics.
