Abstract:Perovskite oxides are widely used in electrochemical cells, profiting from their excellent accommodation of different elements and structure stability. Here, it is reported that when rapidly exceeding the electrochemical stability window of a perovskite oxide through electrochemical treatment, nanoparticles can dynamically exsolve from the perovskite lattice, yielding a nanoparticle decorated material (NDM) with fascinating particle population and distribution. It is reported that as compared to the NDM produced by chemical gas reduction, electrochemical treatment fabricated NDM shows much better electrochemical performance. At 900 °C, a peak power density (PPD) of 896 mW cm-2 (more than tenfold enhancement) is obtained for a yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte-supported symmetrical cell with La0.43 Ca0.37 Ti0.8 Co0.1 Fe0.1 O3- δ (LCTCF) electrode after electrochemical treatment for several minutes, while it only reaches to 210 mW cm-2 after chemical gas treatment for tens of hours using humidified hydrogen as fuel. The study establishes a new fairyland for tuning the performance of-but not limited to-the electrochemical cells.

Abstract:Decorating metallic nanoparticles on the surface of oxide support is a promising approach to tailor the catalytic activity of perovskite. Here, for the first time using thermal shock to rapidly fabricate nanoparticle-decorated materials (NDMs) is proposed. Low-cost and size-tailorable carbon paper is used as the heating source during the thermal shock. It is reported that by thermal shock technique, only ≈13 s including heating and treating time is needed to fabricate the exsolution-based NDMs (the fastest method to date). Benefitted by the sufficiently provided driving force and the short treating time, as compared to the product prepared by the conventionally furnace-based method, higher particle density and smaller particle size of the exsolved catalysts are acquired for the thermal shock fabricated NDM, giving rise to a fascinating improvement (12-fold) of the electrochemical performance. This work develops a new technique to rapidly fabricate NDMs in an economic and high-throughput manner, profoundly improving the flexibility of the application of exsolution-based materials in electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Surface treatment of SnO2 as an electron transport layer is essential for improving charge transport and device performance in the fabrication of perovskite solar cells. In this study, oxygen plasma with a controlled ion–radical composition ratio was used for rapid surface treatment to clean the surface of SnO2, and its performance was compared with that of the conventional UV–ozone treatment. Consequently, the plasma treatment succeeded in increasing the processing speed up to 40 times faster than that required for the conventional UV–ozone pretreatment. Furthermore, plasma pretreatment improved the photostability of solar cells.

Abstract:Symmetrical solid oxide cells can be successfully synthesized in seconds by extreme heat treatment. Symmetrical solid oxide cells (SSOCs) are very useful for energy generation and conversion. To fabricate the electrode of SSOC, it is very time‐consuming to use the conventional approach. In this work, we design and develop a novel method, extreme heat treatment (EHT), to rapidly fabricate electrodes for SSOC. We show that by using the EHT method, the electrode can be fabricated in seconds (the fastest method to date), benefiting from enhanced reaction kinetics. The EHT‐fabricated electrode presents a porous structure and good adhesion with the electrolyte. In contrast, tens of hours are needed to prepare the electrode by the conventional approach, and the prepared electrode exhibits a dense structure with a larger particle size due to the lengthy treatment. The EHT‐fabricated electrode shows desirable electrochemical performance. Moreover, we show that the electrocatalytic activity of the perovskite electrode can be tuned by the vigorous approach of fast exsolution, deriving from the increased active sites for enhancing the electrochemical reactions. At 900 °C, a promising peak power density of 966 mW cm−2 is reached. Our work exploits a new territory to fabricate and develop advanced electrodes for SSOCs in a rapid and high‐throughput manner.

Abstract:This work reports the application of the microwave-assisted solvothermal process to synthesize Pt-Ni alloy polyhedral nanoparticles for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Well-faceted nanoparticles, mainly octahedral and tetrahedral ones were generated. All the as-prepared Pt-Ni nanocrystals are uniformly dispersed on the carbon support. HR-TEM images confirm that the polyhedral nanoparticles are exposed by (111) facets. When the number of pulses is 12, rotating disk electrode (RDE) demonstrate ORR activities of the as-prepared catalysts with the highest mass activity of 1.217 A·mgPt−1 and specific activity of 4.41 mA cm−2Pt at 0.9ViR-free, which is over 11 and 25 times than that of Pt/C catalyst, respectively. Even after being prepared into MEA, the catalyst prepared by 12 microwave pulses still possesses higher performance than commercial Pt/C. Thus, this method can greatly shorten the preparation time to expand the scale of production of the high-performance electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Transition-metal compound (nitrides, carbides, phosphides, etc.) nanomaterials are under intensive research as potential advanced electrode materials in batteries, supercapacitors, and electrocatalytic water splitting. The radio-frequency plasma-assisted technique has emerged as a powerful tool in inducing nanoscale reactions, doping, defects, and nanostructure of electrode materials in high precision. Here, the recent application of the plasma-assisted method in rapid conversion reactions and functionalization of electrode materials, which includes metal nitrides, phosphides, and carbon, is highlighted. The uniqueness and advantage of the plasma technique is introduced, along with the challenge for application to industrial electrode materials.

Abstract:Bimetallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) exsolved on the surface of perovskite oxides (ABO 3 ) alter the structural and electronic properties of the primarily monometallic counterparts. These synergistic effects make the whole material present superior electrolytic and catalytic performances. The strong bonding interaction between alloy NPs and perovskite substrate enables the stability and durability of the catalysis. However, traditional thermal exsolution requires a long-time treatment at a high temperature. Researchers have been pursuing more time-saving and energy-efficient alternative routes. Herein, a low-temperature and fast pathway based on the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor is provided to in-situ exsolve alloy NPs. A favorable activity of the catalyst for CO oxidation is demonstrated. Additionally, we conclude that the factor restricts metallic agglomeration is the morphology of the substrate. Even after an overtime plasma treatment, the exsolved alloy NPs are still embedded in the porous structure of perovskite oxides.

Abstract:The surface composition of perovskite films is very sensitive to film processing and can deviate from the optimal, which generates unfavorable defects and results in efficiency loss in solar cells and slow response speed in photodetectors. An argon plasma treatment is introduced to modify the surface composition by tuning the ratio of organic and inorganic components as well as defect type before deposition of the passivating layer. It can efficiently enhance the charge collection across the perovskite-electrode interface by suppressing charge recombination. Therefore, perovskite solar cells with argon plasma treatment yield enhanced efficiency to 20.4% and perovskite photodetectors can reach their fastest respond speed, which is solely limited by the carrier mobility.

Abstract:In situ exsolved nanoparticles (NPs) on surfaces perform well in many catalytic applications. Herein, an emerging technique of pulsed electric current (PEC) for facilitating NPs exsolution was firstly utilized in functional materials towards tailoring structure and morphology of materials. PEC facilitated Ni NPs exsolution in situ and the exposed active sites were highly dispersed on the LaCrO3 substrate surface. Such result was confirmed by combining x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. As a consequence, PEC-treated and untreated LaCrO3 perovskite samples were employed as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The PEC-treated samples exhibit obviously improved OER activity (lower overpotential, smaller Tafel slope) and lower reaction resistance than the untreated samples. This illustrates that the exsolved Ni NPs driven by PEC are beneficial for the OER performance and are probably the components of the OER active sites.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have received a great deal of attention as promising electrodes in both solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOECs) because of their reasonable reactivity, impurity tolerance, and tunable properties. In particular, exploration is still required for improving perovskite electrodes, which normally suffer from slow kinetics in electrocatalysis. Experimental studies have led to the development of new classes of perovskites with advanced characteristics and electrode kinetics at technical levels. In parallel with those developments, achievements in theoretical and computational studies have led to substantial understanding, at the atomic level, of their physicochemical properties and electrocatalytic behaviors. Their chemical and structural flexibilities enable perovskites to accommodate most metallic elements without destroying their complex matrix structures, thereby delivering a pathway to engineer their catalytic properties. In this Minireview, recent advances in perovskite electrodes are introduced, and perovskites with exsolved nanoparticles are discussed as enhanced electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Although high-entropy alloys have been intensively studied in the past decade, there are still many requirements for manufacturing processes and application directions to be proposed and developed, but most techniques are focused on high-entropy bulk materials and surface coatings. We fabricated high-entropy ceramic (HEC) nanomaterials using simple pulsed laser irradiation scanning on mixed salt solutions (PLMS method) under low-vacuum conditions. This method, allowing simple operation, rapid manufacturing, and low cost, is capable of using various metal salts as precursors and is also suitable for both flat and complicated 3D substrates. In this work, we engineered this PLMS method to fabricate high-entropy ceramic oxides containing four to seven elements. To address the catalytic performance of these HEC nanomaterials, we focused on CoCrFeNiAl high-entropy oxides applied to the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER), which is considered a sluggish process in water. We performed systematic material characterization to solve the complicated structure of the CoCrFeNiAl HEC as a spinel structure, AB(2)O(4) (A, B = Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, or Al). Atoms in A and B sites in the spinel structure can be replaced with other elements; either divalent or trivalent metals can occupy the spinel lattice using this PLMS process. We applied this PLMS method to manufacture electrocatalytic CoCrFeNiAl HEC electrodes for the OER reaction, which displayed state-of-the-art activity and stability.

A Novel Exsolution Technique-Twice Lasers: Rapidly Aroused Explosive Exsolution of Nanoparticles to Boost Electrochemical Performance.

Abstract:The exsolution of nanoparticles (NPs) on material surfaces exhibits good performance with great potential in the field of catalysis. In this study, a method with twice lasers treatment (TLT) is proposed for the first time to rapidly promote the exsolution of Co NPs to the surface of (La0.7Sr0.3)0.93Ti0.93Co0.07O3(LSTC) by laser rapid heating to enhance the electrochemical performance of the LSTC. The entire process from precursor powder-stable perovskite crystal structure-Co NPs exsolution on the LSTC surface takes only ≈36 s by TLT. The Co NPs exsolution was confirmed by x-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. After TLT, a large number of Co NPs reached 75 particlesμm-2appeared on the surface of LSTC with the onset potential of 1.38 V, the overpotential of 214 mV, and the Tafel slope of 81.14 mV dec-1, showing good catalytic activity and long-term stability. The novel process of using TLT to rapidly induce exsolution of NPs enables the rapid preparation of nanoparticle-decorated perovskite materials with better electrochemical properties, thus enriching exsolution technology and opening a new avenue for surface science research.
Composition and Energy Band–Modified Commercial FTO Substrate for in Situ Formed Highly Efficient Electron Transport Layer in Planar Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received much attention and with them a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 22% has been achieved. Electron transport layers (ETLs) based on metal oxide materials play an important role in transferring electrons and reducing back recombination. However, existing fabrication approaches are generally waste too many materials and consume too much energy for commercial application. Here, a brand new plasma preannealing procedure is proposed that can replace the traditional ETL preparation process and alleviate the above-mentioned problems. A pure SnO2 phase in situ formed on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) surface can be obtained at room temperature by only 15 min oxygen plasma assisted reaction without postheating treatment. It enables the precise control of compositions, defects, and energy levels of band at the surface of FTO substrate, resulting in a prominent PCE of 20.39% with excellent stability and reproducibility. This simple and efficient source-free fabrication technology provides a versatile platform for the manufacture of PSCs in the future.
Fast And Low Temperature Growth Of Electron Transport Layers For Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:We describe a fast, simple and low temperature electrochemical technique for the preparation of zinc oxide layers on rigid and flexible substrates. The layers, prepared from a zinc nitrate precursor, are of high structural and optical quality. They have been optimized to be applied as efficient electron transport layers in CH3NH3PbI3-sensitized perovskite solar cells (PSCs). We show that an electrodeposition time of only two minutes and a low processing temperature are sufficient to fabricate solar cells with a power conversion efficiency close to 11%, with a high short circuit current and a small J-V curve hysteresis. The key parameters of the cell functioning have been analyzed over a large applied voltage range by the impedance spectroscopy technique. The solar cell characteristic changes with the ZnO layer deposition time are explained by the variation of the recombination and charge transfer resistances.

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have drawn great attention for their outstanding performance in high-efficiency solar cells. Successful synthesis has been realized either in solution-based chemical deposition or vapor deposition. However, conflicts have never ceased among quality control, growth rate, process complexity, and instrument requirement, which have limited their development toward real applications. In this work, the first electrochemical fabrication of perovskite toward high-efficiency and scalable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is established. The morphology and crystallization of the CH3NH3PbI3 film can be effectively controlled by simply modulating a few physical parameters. A detailed study on its optoelectronic properties reveals significantly improved film quality and interfacial conditions. Aided by this, the total process does not require standard annealing, which greatly reduces the total growth time from hours to minutes. Up to now, an efficiency of 15.65% has been achieved in planar PSCs under 1 sun AM 1.5 condition, with small hysteresis and efficiency loss under longtime exposure to air. Moreover, high efficiency (10.45%) can be easily attained for large cells (2 cm(2)). This result will hopefully facilitate research for applicable high-efficiency PSCs and other multicomponent materials as well.
