Abstract:An efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is key for electrochemical energy generation and storage technologies. Here, the rational design and in situ formation of an antiperovskite-based hybrid with a porous conductive Cu1-xNNi3-y (x and y represent defect) core and amorphous FeNiCu (oxy) hydroxide shell is reported as a promising water oxidation electrocatalyst, showing outstanding performance. Benefiting from the unique advantage of core-shell structure, as well as the synergistic effect of Fe, Ni, and Cu and the highly porous hierarchical structure, the hybrid catalyst exhibits highly efficient and robust OER performance in alkaline environments, outperforming the benchmark IrO2 catalyst in several aspects. Our findings demonstrate the application potential of antiperovskite-based materials in the field of electrocatalysis, which may inspire insights into the development of novel materials for energy generation and storage applications.
Interface Engineering: the Ni(Oh)(2)/Mos2 Heterostructure for Highly Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Earth-abundant, noble-metal-free catalysts with outstanding electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction catalytic activity in alkaline media play a key role in sustainable production of H2 fuel. Herein, the novel three-dimensional Ni(OH)2/MoS2 hybrid catalyst with synergistic effect has been synthesized by a facile approach for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. Benefiting from abundant active interfaces, this hybrid catalyst shows high hydrogen evolution catalytic activity in 1M KOH aqueous solution with an onset overpotential of 20mV, an overpotential of 80mV at 10mAcm−2 and a Tafel slope of 60mV dec−1. Further theoretical calculations offers a deeper insight of the synergistic effect of Ni(OH)2/MoS2 interface: Ni(OH)2 provides the active sites for hydroxyl adsorption, and MoS2 facilitates adsorption of hydrogen intermediates and H2 generation. This interfacial cooperation leads to a favorable hydrogen and hydroxyl species energetics and reduce the energy barrier of the initial water dissociation step, which is the rate-limiting step of MoS2 catalyst in alkaline media. The combination of experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrates that the sluggish alkaline hydrogen evolution process can be circumvented by rational catalysts interface engineering.
Facile Surface Defect Engineering on Perovskite Oxide for Enhanced OER Performance

Abstract:Perovskite oxide has been considered as a potential alternative electrocatalyst in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) field. In this work, a sequence of excellent OER perovskite catalysts was obtained by immersing in a diluted HNO3 solution. Therein, the etched 24 h Sr2CoFeO6 sample (SCFO-24), exhibits the best OER activity, with an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 59.62 mV dec-1. The improved OER activity of SCFO-24 can be attributed to the enhanced specific surface area derived from selectivity dissolution of a large amount of Sr and the high ratio of oxidative oxygen species (O2-/O-). Our work promotes this simple but efficient approach to improving the OER performance of perovskite oxides.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides are demonstrated for the first time as efficient electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solutions. A-site praseodymium-doped Pr0.5 (Ba0.5 Sr0.5 )0.5 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (Pr0.5BSCF) exhibits dramatically enhanced HER activity and stability compared to Ba0.5 Sr0.5 Co0.8 Fe0.2 O3- δ (BSCF), superior to many well-developed bulk/nanosized nonprecious electrocatalysts. The improved HER performance originates from the modified surface electronic structures and properties of Pr0.5BSCF induced by the Pr-doping.
Accelerated Surface Reconstruction Through Regulating the Solid-Liquid Interface by Oxyanions in Perovskite Electrocatalysts for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of surface reconstruction was critical to developing high performance lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism (LOM) based perovskite electrocatalysts. Traditionally, the primary determining factor of the surface reconstruction process was believed to be the oxygen vacancy formation energy. Hence, most previous studies focused on optimizing composition to reduce the oxygen vacancy formation energy, which in turn facilitated the surface reconstruction process. Here, for the first time, we found that adding oxyanions (SO4 2- , CO3 2- , NO3 - ) into the electrolyte could effectively regulate the solid-liquid interface, significantly accelerating the surface reconstruction process and enhancing oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities. Further studies indicated that the added oxyanions would adsorb onto the solid-liquid interface layer, disrupting the dynamic equilibrium between the adsorbed OH- ions and the OH- ions generated during surface reconstruction process. As such, the OH- ions generated during surface reconstruction process could be more readily released into the electrolyte, thereby leading to an acceleration of the surface reconstruction. Thus, it was expected that our finding would provide a new layer of understanding to the surface reconstruction process in LOM-based perovskite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts made of earth abundant elements are essential for the cost-effective generation of solar fuels. Surface modification is a novel strategy to enhance the activity of OER catalysts, however, it is commonly done under harsh and energy intensive conditions. Herein, we present a facile approach of solvent treatment to hydroxylate the surface of a layered perovskite, Sr3FeCoO7−δ. The catalytic activity correlates with the degree of surface hydroxylation, which influences the absorption energy of intermediates on the surface. The optimized catalyst exhibits higher activity than the current benchmark perovskite OER catalysts. This work introduces a mild and convenient method for surface modification, which may be applicable for the improvement of other nanoscale electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The exceptional activity and stability of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with perovskite electrocatalysts originate from the formation of a thin amorphous layer of Co hydr(oxy)oxide (e.g., CoOxHy) that dynamically interplays with intentional Fe3+ from the electrolyte (0.1 m KOH + 0.1 mm Fe3+), which maximizes both surface and bulk participation in OER. Perovskite oxides are intriguing electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction, but both surface (e.g., composition) and bulk (e.g., lattice oxygen) properties should be optimized to maximize their participation in offering favorable activity and durability. In this work, it is demonstrated that through introducing exogenous Fe3+ (Feexo3+ ) into the liquid electrolyte, not only is the reconstructed surface stabilized and optimized, but the lattice oxygen diffusion is also accelerated. As a result, compared to that in Fe‐free 0.1 m KOH, PrBa0.5Sr0.5Co2O5+δ in 0.1 m KOH + 0.1 mm Fe3+ demonstrates a tenfold increment in activity, an extremely low Tafel slope of ≈50 mV dec‐1, and outstanding stability at 10.0 mA cm‐2 for 10 h. The superior activity and stability are further demonstrated in Zn–air batteries by presenting high open‐circuit voltage, narrow potential gap, high power output, and long‐term cycle stability (500 cycles). Based on experimental and theoretical calculations, it is discovered that the dynamical interaction between the Co hydr(oxy)oxide from surface reconstruction and intentional Fe3+ from the electrolyte plays an important role in the enhanced activity and durability, while the generation of a perovskite‐hydr(oxy)oxide heterostructure improves the lattice oxygen diffusion to facilitate lattice oxygen participation and enhances the stability.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides are a promising family of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, rational design of surface reconstruction on perovskite oxides to achieve high intrinsic activity is still a daunting challenge. Here, we demonstrate a facile anion defect approach to activate the surface reconstruction of perovskite oxide for OER. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that fluorine incorporation into LaNi 0.75 Fe 0.25 O 3 (LNFO) perovskite with low vacancy formation energy facilitates surface transformation kinetics, creating electrochemically active oxyhydroxide layer. The reconstruction induced oxyhydroxide-perovskite heterostructure, in turn, enables a reduced energy barrier of OER relative to the pristine perovskite. As a demo, the optimized fluorine incorporated LNFO electrocatalyst exhibits an excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 292 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , significantly superior to the pristine LNFO and the benchmark IrO 2 electrocatalysts. This finding offers new insights into activating surface reconstruction on perovskite oxide by engineering anion defect for water oxidation.

Abstract:Efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) in acid media usually lose substantial performance in alkaline media primarily due to their inefficiency in the prior step: water dissociation. To circumvent the issue, synergistic catalysts have been designed via combining them with metal (hydro)oxides. While this strategy suffers from high cost and complicated fabrication methods, generating catalytic synergy within a single-phase catalyst is considerably more promising. Herein, using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that Ni2P is such a prototypical catalyst whose (001) surface provides not only uniformly distributed single-atom-like but also more importantly intrinsically synergetic active sites to catalyze different elementary steps of alkaline HER Significantly, the unique structural attributes enable surface metal doping to effectively modulate the activity through a bifunctional mechanism and lead to a robust activity descriptor: OH binding strength. We believe that these findings will provide a rational paradigm that advances innovative design of high-performance and economic electrocatalysts for alkaline HER.

Abstract:An efficient and facile water dissociation process plays a crucial role in enhancing the activity of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Considering the intricate influence between interfacial water and intermediates in typical catalytic systems, meticulously engineered catalysts should be developed by modulating electron configurations and optimizing surface chemical bonds. Here, a high-entropy double perovskite (HEDP) electrocatalyst La2(Co1/6Ni1/6Mg1/6Zn1/6Na1/6Li1/6)RuO6, achieving a reduced overpotential of 40.7 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and maintaining exemplary stability over 82 h in a 1 m KOH electrolyte is reported. Advanced spectral characterization and first-principles calculations elucidate the electron transfer from Ru to Co and Ni positions, facilitated by alkali metal-induced super-exchange interaction in high-entropy crystals. This significantly optimizes hydrogen adsorption energy and lowers the water decomposition barrier. Concurrently, the super-exchange interaction enhances orbital hybridization and narrows the bandgap, thus improving catalytic efficiency and adsorption capacity while mitigating hysteresis-driven proton transfer. The high-entropy framework also ensures structural stability and longevity in alkaline environments. The work provides further insights into the formation mechanisms of HEDP and offers guidelines for discovering advanced, efficient hydrogen evolution catalysts through super-exchange interaction.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have been considered as ideal electrocatalysts for water electrolysis since they are eco-friendly, abundant, and easy to be fabricated. However, their application in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is still limited because of relatively poor efficiency and stability. Herein, we report that a facile fabrication method, pulsed laser deposition, is employed to fabricate nanoscale LaCoO3−δ on nickel foam as an active electrocatalyst for HER. We find that in-situ surface reconstruction takes place in HER cycles, which enhances the HER activity greatly. By depositing additional NiO layer and annealing in H2 atmosphere, the catalytic performance and long-term stability of LaCoO3−δ can be further improved. As a result, the catalyst demonstrates a remarkable HER activity with a low overpotential of 180 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and superb stability up to 50 h in alkaline media. Our work uncovers that the underlying phase transition in an alkaline medium and the interface engineering play critical roles in the improved HER activity of perovskite oxides. This work may provide insightful guidance to engineer perovskite oxides as electrocatalysts in the electrolysis of water.

Abstract:The development of an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is of vital importance to water electrolysis. Herein, a facile surface reconstruction strategy of microwave radiation oxidation is reported to fabricate cobalt phosphide (CoP) multishelled hollow spheres with an amorphous cobalt oxide (CoOx) species coating layer (denoted as CoP@CoOx). The synergistic effect between multishelled hollow-structured CoP and amorphous CoOx can trigger strong electronic modulation on the heterointerface, leading to the increased electrochemical active surface area, the improved charge transfer, and the modification of the electronic structure. As a result, the significant improvements in the catalytic activity, long-term stability, and efficiency are achieved compared with pristine CoP. Especially, the CoP@CoOx composite by microwave radiation oxidation for 6 min on nickel foam (NF) displays significantly enhanced HER activity with a low overpotential of 35 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and, even more remarkably, of 109 mV at ultrahigh current density of 100 mA cm( -2). The concept of interfacial electronic modulation by surface reconstruction can offer a unique approach for the rational design of hydrogen evolution catalysts and beyond.
Surface Restructuring of Zeolite‐Encapsulated Halide Perovskite to Activate Lattice Oxygen Oxidation for Water Electrolysis

Abstract:Metal‐halide perovskites possess great potential for electrochemical water splitting that has not been realized due to their intolerance to water. Here, methylammonium lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3) are used to electrocatalyze water oxidation in aqueous electrolytes by creating MAPbX3@AlPO‐5 host‐guest composites. Due to the protective feature of the zeolite matrix, halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) confined in aluminophosphate AlPO‐5 zeolites achieve an excellent stability in water. The resultant electrocatalyst undergoes dynamic surface restructuring during oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the formation of an edge‐sharing α‐PbO2 active layer. The existence of charge‐transfer interactions at the MAPbX3/α‐PbO2 interface significantly modulates the surface electron density of the α‐PbO2 and optimizes the adsorption free energy of oxygen‐containing intermediate species. Furthermore, the soft‐lattice nature of halide perovskites enables more facile triggering of lattice‐oxygen oxidation of nanostructured α‐PbO2, exhibiting pH‐dependent OER activity and non‐concerted proton‐electron transfer for MAPbX3@AlPO‐5 composite. As a result, the developed MAPbBr3@AlPO‐5 composite manifests an ultralow overpotential of 233 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 in 1 M KOH. Our findings offer facile access to halide perovskite applied to water electrolysis with enhanced intrinsic activity, providing a new paradigm for designing high‐efficiency OER electrocatalysts. Enhancing the electrostatic potential difference of high entropy perovskite fluorides by ligand modification for promoted dynamic reconstruction

Abstract:High-entropy perovskite fluorides are very promising for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the low kinetics of reconstruction reactions restrict their high catalytic activity. Herein, a novel strategy was developed for the modification of the surface K(CoMnFeNiCr)F 3 (HEPF) using the electron-donating group pyrrolidone, for the first time, to promote the rate of reconstruction reactions. The experimental results and theoretical calculations demonstrated that after HEPF modification, the energy barrier for OH − adsorption was reduced to −5.37 eV. The surface modification with HEPF also enhanced the intrinsic conductivity owing to the improved band structure. This resulted in the formation of highly active catalytic species at lower potentials, leading to superior intrinsic catalytic activity. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibited an overpotential of only 242 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , representing the best-reported value among similar materials. Overall, the proposed strategy looks promising for unlocking the excellent catalytic activity of high-entropy perovskite fluorides, useful for future syntheses of OER catalysts.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides with poor conductivity call for three-dimensional (3D) conductive scaffolds to demonstrate their superb reactivities for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, perovskite formation usually requires high-temperature annealing at 600° to 900°C in air, under which most of the used conductive frameworks (for example, carbon and metal current collectors) are reductive and cannot survive. We propose a preoxidization coupled electrodeposition strategy in which Co is preoxidized to Co through cobalt Fenton reaction in aqueous solution, whereas the reductive nickel framework is well maintained during the sequential annealing under nonoxidative atmosphere. The in situ-generated Co is inherited into oxidized perovskites deposited on 3D nickel foam, rendering the monolithic perovskite electrocatalysts with extraordinary OER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 350 mV required for 10 mA cm, a very small Tafel slope of 59 mV dec, and superb stability in 0.10 M KOH. Therefore, we inaugurate a unique strategy for in situ hybridization of oxidative active phase with reductive framework, affording superb reactivity of perovskite electrocatalyst for efficient water oxidation.

Unraveling the Synergy of Chemical Hydroxylation and the Physical Heterointerface upon Improving the Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics

Abstract:Efficient transition metal oxide electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have received intensive attention to energy conversion but are limited by their sluggish water dissociation and unfavorable hydrogen migration and coupling. Herein, systematic density functional theory (DFT) predicts that on representative NiO, the hydroxylation (OH–) and heterointerface coupled with metallic Cu can respectively reduce the energy barrier of water dissociation and facilitate hydrogen spillover. Motivated by theoretical predictions, we subtly designed a delicate strategy to realize the electrochemical OH– modification in KOH with moderate concentration (HOM-NiO) and to channel rapid hydrogen spillover at the heterointerface of HOM-NiO and Cu, ensuring an enhanced HER kinetic. This HOM-NiO/Cu is systematically investigated by in situ XAS and electrochemical simulations, verifying its extraordinary merits for HER including the enhanced water dissociation, alleviated oxophilicity that is advantageous for consecutive adsorptions of water, and accelerated hydrogen spillover, thereby exhibiting superb HER activity with 33 and 310 mV overpotentials at the current densities of 10 and 1000 mA cm–2 in 1.0 M KOH, outperforming the Pt/C. Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is apreferred technology for large-scale green hydrogen production. For most active transition metal-based catalysts during anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the atomic structure of the anodic catalysts' surface often undergoes reconstruction to optimize the reaction path and enhance their catalytic activity. The design and maintenance of highly active sites during this reconstruction process remain critical and challenging for most OER catalysts. In this study, we explored the effects of crystal structures in pre-catalysts on surface reconstruction at low applied potential. Through experimental observation and theoretical calculation, we found out that catalysts with specific crystal structures exhibit superior surface remodeling ability, which enables them to better adapt to the conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction and achieve efficient catalysis. The discharge process enables the formation of abundant phosphorus vacancies on the surface, which in turn affects the efficiency of the entire oxygen evolution reaction. The optimized crystal structure of the catalyst results in an increase as high as 58.5 mA/cm 2 for Ni 5 P 4 , which is twice as high as that observed for Ni 2 P. These results provide essential theoretical foundations and technical guidance for designing more efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions.

Abstract:The adsorption of surface reactant hydroxyl and subsequent charge transfer are the cornerstones of alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Though exhibiting benign OER performance, the catalytic activity of perovskite oxides is restricted by their inferior specific area and insufficient hydroxyl affinity. Here, a novel architecture composed of a karren structure and hybrid phase was proposed to uplift the kinetic limitation of hydroxyl adsorption and charge transfer. As a proof-of-concept, the karren-structure perovskite-based compound (Pr0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta-Co3O4) synthesized by facile molten-salt synthesis exhibits excellent OER activity with a low overpotential of 360 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) in 0.1 M KOH, and delivers 5-fold mass activity at 1.63 V relative to pristine perovskite Pr0.5Ba0.25Sr0.25Co0.8Fe0.2O3-delta, outperforming various transition metal oxides and noble metal RuO2. With insights from physicochemical characterization and in situ electrochemical analysis, the interlinked karren structure is effective in providing active area and ion transfer channels for promoting the contact of hydroxyl with active sites, while the strong electronic interaction of the hybrid phase further favors the hydroxyl adsorption and charge transfer, synergistically expediting the sluggish OER kinetics. This work provides insights into the design of perovskite-based electrocatalysts with high performance via a synergistic structural modulation.
