Abstract:Abstract Construction of heterojunctions is an effective strategy to enhanced electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the structural evolution of the active phases and synergistic mechanism still lack in‐depth understanding. Here, an FeOOH/Ni 3 S 2 heterostructure supported on nickel foam (NF) through a two‐step hydrothermal‐chemical etching method is reported. In situ Raman spectroscopy study of the surface reconstruction behaviors of FeOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF indicates that Ni 3 S 2 can be rapidly converted to NiOOH, accompanied by the phase transition from α ‐FeOOH to β ‐FeOOH during the OER process. Importantly, a deep analysis of Ni─O bond reveals that the phase transition of FeOOH can regulate the lattice disorder of NiOOH for improved catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirm that NiOOH/FeOOH heterostructure possess strengthened adsorption for O‐containing intermediates, as well as lower energy barrier toward the OER. As a result, FeOOH/Ni 3 S 2 /NF exhibits promising OER activity and stability in alkaline conditions, requiring an overpotential of 268 mV @ 100 mA cm −2 and long‐term stability over 200 h at a current density of 200 mA cm −2 . This work provides a new perspective for understanding the synergistic mechanism of heterogeneous electrocatalysts during the OER process.

Abstract:The surface-reconstruction-induced layer on transition metal-based catalysts during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered to be responsible for their catalytic activity. However, how the active layer forms and works in the OER process has not been understood clearly. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to reveal the mechanism for the formation of active layer and its role in OER by fabricating the NiCo-based hybrid as a precatalyst. We find that the anodization can improve its OER activity, leading to a low OER overpotential of 276 mV at 20 mA cm−2 and favorable durability (≥100 h). In-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ characterizations reveal that the Ni-CoOOH nanosheets array with promising surface wettability is generated via deep reconstruction during the OER process and the high-valence Co is the active site for efficient oxygen evolution. Theoretical analysis further illustrates that the Co site can be activated by the Ni incorporation, thus optimizing the adsorption capability toward the intermediates.

Abstract:Probing dynamic self‐reconstruction and establishing the reconstruction–property relationship on perovskite fluorides are investigated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media. Fe incorporation accelerates the surface reconstruction of perovskite fluorides and reduces the OER activation energy. The resulting KNi0.8Fe0.2F3@nickel foam electrocatalyst demonstrates an extraordinary OER performance with ultralow overpotential and robust durability. Exploring low cost, highly active, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of prime importance to boost energy conversion efficiency. Perovskite fluorides are emerging as alternative electrocatalysts for OER, however, their intrinsically active sites during real operation are still elusive. Herein, the self‐reconstruction on newly designed NiFe coupled perovskite fluorides during OER process is demonstrated. In situ Raman spectroscopy, ex situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculation reveal that Fe incorporation can significantly activate the self‐reconstruction of perovskite fluorides and efficiently lower the energy barrier of OER. Benefiting from self‐reconstruction and low energy barrier, the KNi0.8Fe0.2F3@nickel foam (KNFF2@NF) electrocatalyst delivers an ultralow overpotential of 258 mV to afford 100 mA cm−2 and an excellent durability for 100 h, favorably rivaling most the state‐of‐the‐art OER electrocatalysts. This protocol provides the fundamental understanding on OER mechanism associated with surface reconstruction for perovskite fluorides.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides are a promising family of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. However, rational design of surface reconstruction on perovskite oxides to achieve high intrinsic activity is still a daunting challenge. Here, we demonstrate a facile anion defect approach to activate the surface reconstruction of perovskite oxide for OER. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that fluorine incorporation into LaNi 0.75 Fe 0.25 O 3 (LNFO) perovskite with low vacancy formation energy facilitates surface transformation kinetics, creating electrochemically active oxyhydroxide layer. The reconstruction induced oxyhydroxide-perovskite heterostructure, in turn, enables a reduced energy barrier of OER relative to the pristine perovskite. As a demo, the optimized fluorine incorporated LNFO electrocatalyst exhibits an excellent OER performance with a low overpotential of 292 mV at 10 mA cm -2 , significantly superior to the pristine LNFO and the benchmark IrO 2 electrocatalysts. This finding offers new insights into activating surface reconstruction on perovskite oxide by engineering anion defect for water oxidation.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most important anodic reactions in electrochemical conversion devices. Although a lot of OER electrocatalysts have been developed, the actual active sites during OER have not been fully understood. Herein, we report that the distorted FeOOH/Ni hydroxide on Ni foam (NF) (d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF) shows better electrochemical performance (1.50 V at 100 mA cm-2 and long-term stability for 32 hours at 425 mA cm-2) than crystalline FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF (c-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF), and outperforms most of the state-of-the-art electrocatalysts. By using in-situ and ex-situ techniques, we show that the interfaces in d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF, which are the key active sites for OER, are well maintained during the reaction, leading to promoted catalytic performance and long-term stability at high current density. We demonstrate that the structure rearrangement in d-FeOOH/Ni hydroxide-NF endows high flexibility of the lattice and tolerates the volume expansion during OER. Our study provides an insightful understanding on the catalytic performance of Fe-Ni based electrocatalysts and guidance for their design and synthesis for practical application.

Abstract:This work discovers that the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active FeNi oxalates (NixFe1‐xC2O4) undergo rapid in situ reconstruction into oxygen evolution reaction (OER) active FeNi oxyhydroxides (NixFe1‐xOOH) upon electrochemical voltammetry cycles for reaching overall water splitting catalysis. This work provides an in‐depth structure‐property relationship understanding on the reconstruction of catalysts and offers a new pathway toward designing overall water splitting catalysts. Surface reconstruction plays an essential role in electrochemical catalysis. The structures, compositions, and functionalities of the real catalytic species and sites generated by reconstruction, however, are yet to be clearly understood, for the metastable or transit state of most reconstructed structures. Herein, a series of NiFe oxalates (NixFe1‐xC2O4, x = 1, 0.9, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5, and 0) are synthesized for overall water splitting electrocatalysis. Whilst NixFe1‐xC2O4 shows great hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, the in situ reconstructed NixFe1‐xOOH exhibits outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity. As identified by the in situ Raman spectroscopy and quasi‐in situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques, reconstructions from NixFe1‐xC2O4 into defective NixFe1‐xOOH and finally amorphous NixFe1‐xOOH active species (R‐NixFe1‐xOOH) are confirmed upon cyclic voltammetry processes. Specifically, the fully reconstructed R‐Ni0.6Fe0.4OOH demonstrates the best OER activity (179 mV to reach 10 mA cm−2), originating from its abundant real active sites and optimal d‐band center. Benefiting from the reconstruction, an alkaline electrolyzer composed of a Ni0.6Fe0.4C2O4 cathode and an in situ reconstructed R‐Ni0.6Fe0.4OOH anode achieves a superb overall water splitting performance (1.52 V@10 mA cm−2). This work provides an in‐depth structure‐property relationship understanding on the reconstruction of catalysts and offers a new pathway to designing novel catalyst.

Abstract:In situ spectroscopic characterization has been considered as a key method to study catalytic mechanisms. However, most in situ spectroscopic characterizations can only be used to obtain the overall structure of the catalyst, and its spectral intensity depends on the average information about the catalyst as a whole or in a single area, which makes it difficult to determine the real active site of the catalyst. Herein, to overcome the limitations of traditional in situ spectroscopic characterizations, we developed in situ Raman mapping technology to achieve accurate characterizations of active sites during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and this work can directly identify and visualize the real active sites of Ni–Fe catalysts for the OER. The in situ Raman mapping technology clearly shows the surface reconstruction process and dynamic active site of the Ni–Fe catalyst during the OER, namely, Ni is converted to NiOOH and the formed NiOOH/Fe–NiOOH as an active site catalyzes the OER. The visualization of the dynamic active site developed in this paper will promote the understanding of the OER catalytic process and can be used in other homo/heterogeneous catalysis fields.

Abstract:Layered double hydroxide (LDH) has shown great promise for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline solution, but its catalytic performance is still hindered by inadequate active sites and large overpotentials. Here, we report a robust solvothermal reconstruction strategy that can induce rich cavities and active sites in fluorinated NiFe LDH (NiFe-F) electrocatalysts for excellent OER activities. In the process of reconstruction, partial fluoride ions and metal cations (Fe3+) are leached from the catalyst in the alkaline solution at an elevated temperature. This leads to an effective bulk and surface reconstruction, drastically increasing the electrochemical active surface area and exposing more catalytic active sites, therefore improving the kinetics of the reaction and optimizing the binding energy of OER intermediates, as evidenced in our systematic electrochemistry studies and the density functional theory calculations. The reconstructed NiFe-F catalyst exhibits an unprecedented high activity toward OER among the non-noble metal catalysts, with a low overpotential (η) of 152 mV at 10 mA cm–2, high turnover frequency of 1.6 × 10–1 s–1 at η = 200 mV, and small activation energy of 12.8 kJ mol–1 at 1.23 VRHE, and excellent stability in the chronopotentiometry at 10 mA cm–2 for 100 h. This study offers a robust reconstruction strategy toward OER catalyst design for the next-generation clean energy conversion.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have gained significant attention in recent years due to their superior catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the identification of the active structure and corresponding catalytic mechanism for these oxides still remains elusive, particularly for complex perovskite oxides. This is due to the complicated surface reconstruction that may occur under working conditions and the diverse reaction mechanisms. This paper aims to address these issues by providing an overview of OER, perovskite oxides, characterization methods, and factors affecting surface reconstruction during OER. Specifically, the paper reviews in-situ and operando characterization studies conducted over the last decade, focusing on the surface dynamic structural evolution of simple and complex perovskite oxides such as SrIrO 3 and Ba 0.5 Sr 0.5 Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 O 3-δ (BSCF). The paper concludes by presenting a summary of reported active structures on perovskite oxides so far. By addressing these issues, this paper provides an outlook to guide future research, encompassing aspects from materials synthesis, combinational operando methods, and the development of characterization and electrochemical techniques to more advanced simulations.

Abstract:Designing earth-abundant electrocatalysts that are highly active, low-cost, and stable for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for electrochemical water splitting. However, in conventional electrode fabrication strategies, NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) catalysts are usually coated onto substrates as external components, which suffers from poor conductivity, easily detaches from the substrate, and hinders their long-term utilization. Herein, the surface-reconstruction strategy is used to synthesize in situ autologous NiFe LDH to increase the surficial active sites numbers. The FeNi foam (FNF) serves as both the metal source and substrate, and the obtained NiFe LDH nanosheets (NSs) are firmly anchored in the monolithic FNF. What needs to be emphasized is that the strategy does not involve any high-temperature or high-pressure processes, apart from a cost-effective etching and a specified drying treatment. The nanostructure of NiFe LDH and the synergistic effect between Fe and Ni simultaneously lead to an enhanced catalytic effect for the OER. Remarkably, the sr-FNF46 requires only an ultralow overpotential of 283 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for the OER in 1 M KOH electrolyte, and exhibits excellent stability. Thus, the obtained electrode holds promise for electrocatalytic applications. Finally, the formation mechanism of NiFe LDH NSs due to surface reconstruction is investigated and discussed in detail.
A Surface-Modified Antiperovskite As an Electrocatalyst for Water Oxidation

Abstract:An efficient and cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst is key for electrochemical energy generation and storage technologies. Here, the rational design and in situ formation of an antiperovskite-based hybrid with a porous conductive Cu1-xNNi3-y (x and y represent defect) core and amorphous FeNiCu (oxy) hydroxide shell is reported as a promising water oxidation electrocatalyst, showing outstanding performance. Benefiting from the unique advantage of core-shell structure, as well as the synergistic effect of Fe, Ni, and Cu and the highly porous hierarchical structure, the hybrid catalyst exhibits highly efficient and robust OER performance in alkaline environments, outperforming the benchmark IrO2 catalyst in several aspects. Our findings demonstrate the application potential of antiperovskite-based materials in the field of electrocatalysis, which may inspire insights into the development of novel materials for energy generation and storage applications.

Abstract:Facilitating the surface reconstruction of pre-catalysts has been considered an effective strategy for constructing low-cost and highly efficient OER electrocatalysts. Metal-doping is a feasible way to activate the surface reconstruction, thus enhancing the OER performance. Herein, we report a facile hydrothermal method to synthesize a series of Zn-doped Ni-MOF on nickel foam (NiZn-MOF/NF) as promising pre-catalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Zn leaching of NiZn-MOF/NF can promote the surface self-reconstruction of NiZn-MOF/NF to oxygen-vacancy-rich NiOOH after electrochemical activation. Benefiting from the optimized electronic structure, abundant defects, more accessible active sites, and enhanced electrical conductivity, the reconstructed metal oxyhydroxide hybrids exhibits better electrocatalytic activity than the catalysts transformed from Ni-MOF/NF without Zn doping. The optimized NiZn-MOF/NF-OH as an OER catalyst has overpotential of 336 mV at 100 mA cm-2, and the Tafel slope of 65.9 mV dec-1, as well as stability over 12 h. This work reveals that Zn cation-doping/leaching induce the surface reconstruction of pre-catalyst for enhanced oxygen catalytic activity, which provides a new approach for the development of advanced electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Alkaline water electrolysis is apreferred technology for large-scale green hydrogen production. For most active transition metal-based catalysts during anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the atomic structure of the anodic catalysts' surface often undergoes reconstruction to optimize the reaction path and enhance their catalytic activity. The design and maintenance of highly active sites during this reconstruction process remain critical and challenging for most OER catalysts. In this study, we explored the effects of crystal structures in pre-catalysts on surface reconstruction at low applied potential. Through experimental observation and theoretical calculation, we found out that catalysts with specific crystal structures exhibit superior surface remodeling ability, which enables them to better adapt to the conditions of the oxygen evolution reaction and achieve efficient catalysis. The discharge process enables the formation of abundant phosphorus vacancies on the surface, which in turn affects the efficiency of the entire oxygen evolution reaction. The optimized crystal structure of the catalyst results in an increase as high as 58.5 mA/cm 2 for Ni 5 P 4 , which is twice as high as that observed for Ni 2 P. These results provide essential theoretical foundations and technical guidance for designing more efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reactions.

Abstract:Surface reconstruction of electrocatalysts has been widely witnessed during the electrochemical processes. Here, NiS 2 , NiSe 2 , and Se doped NiS 2 (Se-NiS 2 ) are fabricated for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through a mild sulfuration and/or selenylation process of Ni(OH) 2 supported on carbon cloth (CC). Through careful in-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface reconstruction of NiS 2 , NiSe 2 , and Se-NiS 2 during the OER process has been revealed. A potential-dependent study shows that Se-NiS 2 undergoes surface evolution at lower potentials and requires the lowest potential for conversion to NiOOH as a highly OER-active species, accompanied by the leaching of SO 4 2− and SeO 4 2− that can again be adsorbed on the catalyst surface to enhance the catalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Se-NiS 2 is more susceptible to surface oxidation through the OER process. Therefore, Se-NiS 2 in alkaline conditions exhibits outstanding OER activity and stability, requiring an overpotential of 343 mV at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 . A novel insight is provided by our work in understanding the surface reconstruction and electrocatalytic mechanism of Ni-based chalcogenides.

Enhancing Oxygen Evolution Reaction Performance: Electrochemical Activation of the Biphasic CoNi/Zn(Fe,Al,Cr) 2 O 4 via Controlled Aluminum Leaching Facilitated Surface Reconstruction

Abstract:Abstract Given that the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) faces challenges due to its sluggish kinetics, development of efficient and robust OER catalytic electrodes is critical for reducing the cost of hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting. In this study, a biphasic CoNi/Zn(Fe,Al,Cr) 2 O 4 coating, characterized by a densely organized stalagmite‐like microarray structure, is deposited on a commercial pure titanium plate, creating an exceptionally effective OER catalytic electrode. The formation of numerous metal/spinel oxide heterogeneous interfaces is demonstrated to enhance its electron transfer ability and conductivity. At high potentials, aluminum leaching and lattice oxygen consumption can facilitate deep surface reconstruction of highly active Fe‐doped CoNiOOH phase inducing electrochemical activation, further optimizing thermodynamic barrier of the fundamental reaction step. Ultimately, this electrode showcases exceptional OER catalytic performance (low overpotential of 248 and 335 mV to deliver the current density of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 ) compared to commercial IrO 2 catalyst (overpotential of ≈310 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ). Moreover, it demonstrates high current stability sustaining a current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 100 h. This work deepens the comprehension of the surface reconstruction process in OER and, more broadly, introduces a new avenue for designing and enhancing the performance of catalytic materials.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used to prepare oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts due to their unique structural and compositional advantages, such as adequate available active sites, high specific surface areas and strong regulation of skeleton structures. However, many MOF-based catalysts inevitably undergo irreversible surface reconstruction during the redox process at high potential before transitioning into a real catalyst from a precatalyst. Therefore, revealing the mechanism and process of surface reconstruction is conducive to the directed synthesis of OER catalysts with high catalytic activity and stability. In addition, studying the reconstruction process and its positive effect on OER catalytic performance can promote the development of MOF-based nanomaterials in practical applications. This review summarizes the surface reconstruction phenomenon of MOF-based nanomaterial electrocatalysts for OER, followed by a discussion on the effects of structural and compositional transformation on the catalytic activity. The causes and conditions of surface reconstruction and its influence on OER performance are discussed, demonstrating the structure–activity relationship between surface reconstruction and catalytic performance. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of surface reconstruction are proposed.

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have received great attention as promising electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), thanks to the highly active transition-metal oxyhydroxide surface formed under operando conditions. Such an in situ surface reconstruction is spontaneous under a potential bias, generating both the OER-active and the OER-inert domains simultaneously. We herein aimed at maximizing the activity of perovskite oxides via controlled surface evolution using two typical perovskites, i.e., Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (BSCF) and La0.6Sr0.4Co0.8Fe0.2O3 (LSCF), as the model catalysts. We first elucidated the active site evolution under high anodic potentials in 6 M KOH at 85 °C via combined microscopic, spectroscopic, and thermodynamic analyses. While the bulk integrity of both perovskites was maintained, a thin amorphous layer formed after biasing at 0.5 V overpotential. Being rich in transition-metal oxyhydroxide, this layer also contained significant amounts of Ba- and La-hydroxides. Guided by the Pourbaix diagram, we designed an in situ “re-activation” step by circulating a lightly acidified electrolyte in the electrolyzer to selectively remove inert A-site hydroxide deposits, resulting in substantially boosted OER activity and robustness. This work shows a facile and universal approach for reactivating perovskite oxide OER catalysts under industrially relevant conditions, opening opportunities for their application in real life.

Engineering Self-Reconstruction Via Flexible Components in Layered Double Hydroxides for Superior-Evolving Performance

Abstract:Most transition metal-based catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) undergo surface reconstruction to generate real active sites favorable for high OER performance. Herein, how to use self-reconstruction as an efficient strategy to develop novel and robust OER catalysts by designing pre-catalysts with flexible components susceptible to OER conditions is proposed. The NiFe-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated with resoluble molybdate (MoO42-) anions in interlayers are constructed and then demonstrated to achieve complete electrochemical self-reconstruction (ECSR) into active NiFe-oxyhydroxides (NiFeOOH) beneficial to alkaline OER. Various ex situ and in situ techniques are used to capture structural evolution process including fast dissolution of MoO42- and deep reconstruction to NiFeOOH upon simultaneous hydroxyl invasion and electro-oxidation. The obtained NiFeOOH exhibits an excellent OER performance with an overpotential of only 268 mV at 50 mA cm(-1) and robust durability over 45 h, much superior to NiFe-LDH and commercial IrO2 benchmark. This work suggests that the ECSR engineering in component-flexible precursors is a promising strategy to develop highly active OER catalysts for energy conversion.

Abstract:Perovskite oxide has been considered as a potential alternative electrocatalyst in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) field. In this work, a sequence of excellent OER perovskite catalysts was obtained by immersing in a diluted HNO3 solution. Therein, the etched 24 h Sr2CoFeO6 sample (SCFO-24), exhibits the best OER activity, with an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 59.62 mV dec-1. The improved OER activity of SCFO-24 can be attributed to the enhanced specific surface area derived from selectivity dissolution of a large amount of Sr and the high ratio of oxidative oxygen species (O2-/O-). Our work promotes this simple but efficient approach to improving the OER performance of perovskite oxides.
