Abstract:As one of the basic drives of globalization, Foreig n Direct Investment (FDI) is playing an active role in the economic development of NIEs. For instance, in China 2004, fixed assets investment, industry value added , and export of FDI firms accounts for 12%, 28%, and 57% of nation's total amount. 24 million employees are hired by FDI firms which accounts for 10% of all non-agricul ture work force. The inflows of FDI not only increase the capital and create employ ment opportunities but also influence the innovation process of host countries. Through spillover effect of FDI host countries may improve their technological capa bility, organizational efficiency and management skills and even start endogenous growth. However, the condition and mechanism of spillover are so complicated that conclusions diverge on how FDI impacts innovative output in host countries. Innovative effort reflects the volume of resources that a company dedicates to carrying out innovative activities over a given per iod of time. In the area of technological innovation, the relationship between innovative effort and innovation output is validated by a number of studies (Grilich es,1990; Hitt et al.,1997; Hagedoorn,Cloodt,2003). Hence investigating the impact of FDI on innovative effort can help to analyze the mechanism of FDI on innovation output and provide profound understanding the role FDI plays in the development of host countries.
Outward Foreign Direct Investment, Product Development Experience And Domestic Innovation Performance

Abstract:Debate on how Emerging Market (EM) firms may use outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) as a vehicle to enhance innovation performance has not been conclusive. On one hand, dynamic capability literature supports that these firms may build up product development experience (PDE) via OFDI for improving innovation performance. On the other hand, path dependence argument suggests that these firms PDE is domestic market-specific, therefore, PDE accumulated may constrain their capability of using OFDI opportunities for improving innovation performance. We argue that PDE breadth and depth affect the relationships among PDE, OFDI, and innovation performance. Using panel data of 80 Chinese firms we find that PDE depth has a significant negative effect on domestic innovation performance of Chinese outward investors. Our finding provides specific conditions for when the path dependence effect holds.

Abstract:This paper proposes the opportunities and challenges of firms' indigenous innovation in global manufacturing networks.The modes,mechanisms,and the path of indigenous innovation are induced.It is suggested that Chinese firms are facing the challenges of MNC control,trade dependence and the marginalization,while they have the opportunities to learn,upgrade and invest(ODI) in global manufacturing networks.Indigenous innovation is defined by two dimensions in this paper,the first dimension is the intellectual property control,and the second dimension is value chain control.And the global manufacturing networks can be divided into two contexts.The first context is that Chinese firms are participating in the foreign MNCs dominated networks,in which they adopt the secondary innovation mode and increase technological learning by network embeddedness.The second context is that Chinese firms are building their own network,in which they adopt post-secondary innovation mode and increase innovation performance by strategic assets acquisition,learning and control mechanisms based on ODI.It's concluded that a path from secondary innovation to post-secondary innovation should be implemented by Chinese firms.

Abstract:With the fast development of the global division of labour, intra-industry technology spill over has become a significant manifestation of both Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and its impact on the domestic industrial structure, as well as the key to industrial value chain upgrading. Meanwhile, China's outbound foreign direct investment (ODI) has developed rapidly since the reform and opening up, with a large number of both up-gradient ODI in developing countries and down-gradient ODI in developed countries. Therefore, it is essential to figure out the relation between ODI and industrial technology change. This paper intends to theoretically clarify the adjustment function of ODI to intra-industry technology change and to construct the mechanism of this process. It provides a theoretical reference for the empirical analysis of the role of direct investment in intra-industry upgrading.

Abstract:Firms' international expansion, affected by outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) policies of home countries, can greatly shape their innovation performance. Yet, existing literature lacks sufficient investigation toward the nexus between corporate response to policies in OFDI activities and subsequent innovation performance. Thus, this article examines how a firm's response to OFDI policies affects its innovation performance. Drawing on the resource dependence theory, the authors theorize corporate response to OFDI policies as firm dependence on home governments. They argue that such dependence differentially affects firm innovation through support and control mechanisms, and elucidate an inverted U-shaped relationship between corporate response to OFDI policies (measured by the percentage of a firm's OFDI projects in policy-favored markets) and innovation performance (measured as patent counts). Furthermore, this curvilinear relationship, they posit, is moderated and strengthened by home-government subsidies the firm receives (calculated as the ratio of annual subsidies received to yearly sales). The authors use archival data of 2,050 Chinese listed manufacturing firms responding to specific OFDI policies from 2013 to 2021 to corroborate their predictions. Overall, by illuminating the innovation implications of OFDI as a corporate response to policies, this study contributes to the international marketing literature in the context of emerging markets.

Abstract:Chinese outward direct investment (ODI) is unique in the sense that it starts in the early stage of economic development and does not move factories overseas. Empirical analyses using firm-level data confirm that the main purpose of Chinese ODI is to strengthen domestic production and productivity by acquiring strategic assets overseas. This Chinese style of ODI, which is different from Japanese efficiency-seeking ODI or American market-seeking ODI, is mainly underscored by significant cost advantage and abundant foreign exchange. We suggest that there might be a life cycle of ODI, which evolves from the Chinese style to the Japanese style and then to the American style as the economy develops. Following this proposition, we expect a major wave of ODI by Chinese small-sized and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in the coming decade.

Abstract:Drawing on institutional theory, we argue that the likelihood of a Chinese firm adopting an isomorphic strategy in outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) depends on the influence of external isomorphic pressures—specifically, domestic regional and domestic industrial isomorphic pressures—and the firm’s internal legitimacy-seeking motivation. Quantitative analysis of a sample of 107 Chinese listed firms and their OFDI projects in the 2008–2012 period offers supportive evidence for our arguments. Our study offers further insights into Chinese MNEs by providing a better understanding of the impact of China’s regional and industrial diversity on their OFDI.

Abstract:The effect of Enterprises Internationalization and ODI(outward direct investment) on industrial upgrading of the home Country is a new topic for academic exploring theoretically or empirically.The reality of China is one of later comers in making ODI means it could take some practices of the ODI Pioneers as reference in pursuing certain strategies.This paper checks ODI experiences of the major industrial countries,especially those of the US and Japan from a multi-vision angle.Analysis at firm level suggests that there are explicit links between the evolution of the dominant motivation of the ODI and that of home country's industries.Empirical work focusing at industrial level shows that there are also visible connections between changes of inter/intra-industry structure and the efficiency improvement originated from ODI flow.A comparative checking between the US and Japan suggests the industrial upgrading connected with ODI could take different route patterns.The pattern taken by US was featured with efficiency priority while that of Japan does with structural adjustment priority.As an emerging market economy,it is obvious that the initial condition of China in terms of ODI-industrial upgrading effects is different from those developed pioneering economies substantially.This shall undoubtedly give "Chinese characteristics" to the coming pattern of ODI-industry upgrading effect of China.

Abstract:Outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) has become an important strategy for enhancing firms' innovation capabilities through the reverse technology spillover effects from overseas innovation experience. The extant research on the effect of OFDI on innovation has focused primarily on developed economies, while the influence of OFDI in developing countries has remained relatively unexplored. The major Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) encourages Chinese firms to invest in Belt and Road (BR) countries—mainly developing nations. We investigate the impact of BR OFDI on Chinese firms' innovations and its influencing mechanisms. The main findings are as follows. First, BR OFDI has a positive effect on innovation by increasing R&D spending and returns on investments in overseas subsidiaries. Second, the number of research-driven subsidiaries has a positive moderating effect on innovation. Finally, the BR ODFI innovative effect is stronger after the launch of the BR initiative in 2013 and more significant for nonstate-owned enterprises. Our research has theoretical significance by uncovering the overseas return mechanism and the moderating effects of investment depth and motivation on the impact of BR OFDI on innovation—topics rarely explored in the OFDI literature. These research findings have practical implications for governments designing effective policies to promote BR OFDI activities and for firms developing robust OFDI investment strategies along the Belt and Road to improve their innovation performance.

Abstract:Both the outward direct investment (ODI) from emerging market economies and industrial upgrading are new topics in economic research. Most research on these two topics has been done separately so far. China's emergence as a major ODI nation and urgent requirement for domestic industrial upgrading are increasingly bringing these together. With the hypothesis of the causal connection between the ODI and industrial upgrading, this paper tries to clarify the channel and mechanism that ODI spreads in terms of its effect on home countries' industries and to identify related evidence with a way of bringing knowledge in three research fields together: a) the historical experience of the ODI Pioneering countries; b) clues found from existing research and cases at sector level; c) evidence from China. Research shows that there are clear upgrading effects of the ODI in US and Japan's history when they emerged as ODI nations although they took different patterns. The pattern taken by the US was featured with efficiency priority, while that of Japan does so with structural adjustment priority. The mechanism and channels through which the ODI imposes effects on home industries' upgrading in China are more extensive than that of pioneer industrial countries. Besides, the empirical work done with the typical regions and typical industrial sectors gives clear support on the upgrading effects hypothesis in China.

Abstract:The existing literature has explored the existence of reverse technology spillover through outward foreign direct investment (OFDI), which means domestic firms improve their technological innovation and productivity due to overseas investment activities. This paper aims to examine how the host country affects reverse technology spillover from OFDI. The findings show domestic innovation performance (DIP) is positively related to OFDI in developed countries while it is negatively related to OFDI in transitional and emerging markets. It is also found that financial development and human capital weaken the positive relationship between OFDI in developed countries and DIP and also weaken the negative relationship between OFDI in transitional and emerging markets and DIP. These results are further confirmed through robustness checks.

Abstract:This paper examines the impact of China’s Outward Direct Investment (ODI) on the world economy in terms of economic efficiency and aims to provide insight for the host economies in strategizing their investment policies. This study employs Stochastic Frontier Approach (SFA) to estimate the impact of China’s ODI on the world for both developed and developing economies. The research encompassed a total of 156 nations for the period spanning from 2009 to 2017. The findings indicate that there is a 13.3% disparity in efficiency between industrialized and developing countries. The results further reveal that the China’s ODI to developing countries contributes to the reduction of inefficiency in both the Cobb-Douglass and Trans log models. Results for developed countries are mixed, with a significant contribution to inefficiency reduction in the Cobb-Douglass model only. Findings in this paper rebuke the general acceptance that ODI is good in everything for the host countries. Instead, ODI will be more beneficial to the host countries to reduce inefficiency if they are at a lower level of development than the home countries. The findings recommend China’s ODI to developing countries, while developed countries may still reap positive spillovers on efficiency with careful selection of the type of ODI from China to match their national economic development agenda.

Abstract:This article aims to analyze the impact of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) on China's export trade. In theoretical analysis, the motives behind China's OFDI were explored, including seeking resources, expanding the market, enhancing technology and management capabilities, and promoting enterprise internationalization. In terms of positive impact, the positive impact of OFDI on expanding export markets, enhancing product competitiveness, and optimizing industrial structure was discussed. However, it also pointed out negative impacts such as backflow effects and trade protectionism. By taking Huawei's investment in the African market as a case study, this paper analyzes its impact on expanding export markets, upgrading technology, increasing export added value, and driving the development of related industries. In the analysis of influencing factors, multiple factors such as policies, markets, and industries were mentioned. Finally, policy recommendations for the development of OFDI from the perspectives of government, enterprises, and industry were proposed.

Abstract:This study delves into the nuanced relationship between China's OFDI and the enhancement of economic growth quality, with a focus on the reverse technology spillover effect. Our findings reveal that OFDI contributes significantly to the efficiency and sustainability of economic growth. Notably, we observe a time-lag effect in the positive impact on growth quality, indicating a delayed manifestation of reverse technology spillovers. Further, heterogeneity analysis suggests that OFDI in high-economic-level host countries, by firms with fewer branches and those in trade sales, enhances the quality, efficiency, and sustainability of China's economic growth, albeit with limited stability impact. Additionally, we uncover a mediating effect wherein OFDI-induced scale expansion elevates domestic human capital levels and R&D intensity, narrows the technology gap, and substantially uplifts China's economic growth quality. This research not only sheds light on the strategic value of China's OFDI in global economic dynamics but also offers actionable insights for policymakers and businesses to harness OFDI for sustainable and quality-driven economic advancement.

Abstract:The aims of this paper are: to examine the key reasons for the locations of and the reasons for China's OFDI as it boomed and became a major OFDI player in the global economy; and, to assess the existence and nature of possible risks to such a boom continuing. The core of the paper, in its second section, is a time-indexed review of findings relating to the first theme noted above. The broad conclusions are that: China's OFDI has been a great success in the period 2005-2019; its motivations have included all the usual possibilities, such as access to resources, market access, access to and reverse engineering of technology (very broadly construed), and access to cheap labour for manufacturing; but, it has also sought to wield political influence via infrastructural investment, and its increasingly hostile attitudes in geopolitical terms in the past decade may pose consequential threats to a continuation of the success to date.

Abstract:This study investigates whether and to what extent EM MNEs employ OFDI for knowledge-seeking and knowledge-integration purposes to improve their innovation capability at home. Extending previous studies that have identified the knowledge-seeking motives and also provided some evidence for their validity, our study aims to examine how such OFDI can benefit the innovation performance of EM MNEs at home. Using survey data from a sample of manufacturing firms in China, we demonstrate that OFDI is positively related to innovation performance. We also find that the positive relationship between OFDI and innovation performance is stronger when foreign firms have acquired an ownership interest in an EM MNE and when they have higher R&D intensity. Finally, theoretical and managerial implications are discussed.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to conduct an analysis of the influence of both the breadth and depth of outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) undertaken by Chinese high-tech listed companies during the period spanning 2010–2019. The data pertaining to these companies was used as a research sample to analyze the effects of OFDI on radical innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach Hierarchical regression analysis was used to test the proposed models, using survey data collected from 442 high-tech companies in China. Findings The findings of this study indicate a curvilinear (i.e. U-shaped) relationship between the breadth/depth of OFDI and radical innovation performance. Additional analysis reveals that OFDI plays a role in facilitating innovation breakthroughs by enhancing the internal dynamic capabilities of companies. Moreover, it is observed that a well-established institutional environment in the host country of investment can positively moderate the relationship between OFDI breadth/depth and radical innovation performance. Originality/value This study proffers a significant contribution to the understanding of the crucial role played by OFDI from emerging economy companies in enhancing radical innovation performance. Moreover, it offers theoretical guidance for multinational companies aiming to foster innovation breakthroughs.

Abstract:The growth of China's foreign direct investment (OFDI) has attracted the attention of the world.From the perspective of micro-enterprise analysis,through the Tobit model and practical examples,using the data of China's foreign direct investment (FDI) from 2003 to 2014,we explored the differences and complex and diverse characteristics of the OFDI in Africa about size,industry structure,corporate ownership,origin,host country and spatial distribution.The results show that the Chinese government has played a role in the process of "going out".But in recent years the role of non-state-owned enterprises and local state-owned enterprises has become more and more significant.The investment area that Chinese investors focus on has changed,from geological exploration and development industry to manufacturing,leasing and business services,and Chinese subsidiaries in Africa gradually extended to the upstream and downstream industry chain.The results of the model claim that the host country's attributes and its proximity to China's politics and economy determine the spatial distribution of China's OFDI in Africa.As a latecomer to invest in Africa,Chinese enterprises,especially private enterprises,often choose underdeveloped and politically unstable countries to avoid competing with investors from developed countries and gain greater profits.Chinese enterprises are mainly marketoriented after 2007.
