ODI and Home Country's Industrial Upgrading:Experience of Pioneering Countries and Their Hints to China——A Multi-visual Angle Analysis

Abstract:The effect of Enterprises Internationalization and ODI(outward direct investment) on industrial upgrading of the home Country is a new topic for academic exploring theoretically or empirically.The reality of China is one of later comers in making ODI means it could take some practices of the ODI Pioneers as reference in pursuing certain strategies.This paper checks ODI experiences of the major industrial countries,especially those of the US and Japan from a multi-vision angle.Analysis at firm level suggests that there are explicit links between the evolution of the dominant motivation of the ODI and that of home country's industries.Empirical work focusing at industrial level shows that there are also visible connections between changes of inter/intra-industry structure and the efficiency improvement originated from ODI flow.A comparative checking between the US and Japan suggests the industrial upgrading connected with ODI could take different route patterns.The pattern taken by US was featured with efficiency priority while that of Japan does with structural adjustment priority.As an emerging market economy,it is obvious that the initial condition of China in terms of ODI-industrial upgrading effects is different from those developed pioneering economies substantially.This shall undoubtedly give "Chinese characteristics" to the coming pattern of ODI-industry upgrading effect of China.
