Abstract:Nano-Co3O4 was prepared by a precipitation method and successfully applied as a heterogeneous catalyst to activate persulfate (PS). The heterogeneous character of PS activation with nano-Co3O4 was more pronounced at neutral pH as indicated by the maximum degradation rate of orange G (OG) and the low concentration of dissolved cobalt ions. The increasing dosages of nano-Co3O4 and PS, and the higher temperature rapidly promoted the degradation kinetics of OG. Sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) were proved to be the primary oxidative species, although the intensity of DMPO-OH signals were much stronger than that of DMPO-SO4 due to the fast transformation from DMPO-SO4 to DMPO-OH. The catalyst presented an acceptable stability through using it in five consecutive runs. The degradation pathways of OG in nano-Co3O4/PS process were proposed for the first time based on LC-MS analysis. The effects of Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, Co2+, Fe2+ and Mn2+ ions, which usually co-exist as water matrix chemicals with azo-dyes, on OG removal by nano-Co3O4/ PS were examined intensively. The reactivity of potassium persulfate (PS), sodium persulfate (NaPS) and potassium peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the presence of nano-Co3O4 followed the order of nano-Co3O4/ PMS > nano-Co3O4/ PS > nano-Co3O4/NaPS.

Abstract:Porous silicate supported micro-nano zero-valent iron (PSi@ZVI) was prepared from copper slag (CS) through carbothermal reduction technology, and used as a persulfate (PS) activator for removing organic contaminants. Results showed that the properties of the activator were greatly affected by the preparation conditions. Calcination for 20 min at 1100 degrees C with 20% anthracite was considered the optimum preparation condition for degradation of orange G (OG). The removal rate of OG was improved by increasing the dosages of PSi@ZVI or PS and raising the reaction temperature. Moreover, PSi@ZVI exhibited excellent PS activator ability in a wide range of initial pH, good degradation capability for eosin Y, methyl orange, acid fuchsine and methylene blue. The reusability and safety of PSi@ZVI were verified. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical quenching tests indicated that sulfate radical (SO4 center dot(-)) was the main active species in the PSi@ZVI/PS system. The X-ray diffraction results indicated that a high calcination temperature (1100 degrees C) was beneficial to the reduction of iron-bearing minerals to ZVI. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy results revealed that the formation of porous structure of PSi@ZVI and the generation of nano to micro-sized ZVI particles on the surface of the silicate holes. The X-ray photoelectron spectra showed that ZVI was first convert into Fe(II), which mainly activated PS and generated Fe(III) in the PSi@ZVI/PS system. Furthermore, the intermediates of OG were detected using gas chromatography mass spectrometry, and the possible degradation pathway of OG was proposed. Strong Synergistic Effect of Co3O4 Encapsulated in Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanotubes on the Nonradical-Dominated Persulfate Activation

Abstract:A novel nanohybrid with nano-Co3O4 encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3O4@NCNTs) was developed as a persulfate (PS) activation catalyst. Co3O4@NCNTs exhibit excellent PS activation performance for Orange G degradation with almost 100% removal efficiency within 30 min, remarkable superior to commercial nano-Co3O4, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and concentrated acid-treated Co3O4@NCNTs. Such superior catalytic activity of Co3O4@NCNTs contributes to the strong synergistic effects between N-doped CNTs and encapsulated nano-Co3O4, which is mainly originated from Co-N sites at the heterointerface. The PS activation process by Co3O4@NCNTs is dominated by nonradical pathway involving O-1(2) generation and indirect electron transfer. The detailed mechanism for the nonradical-dominated PS activation by Co3O4@NCNTs was proposed. Co3O4@NCNTs also exhibit desirable reusability, good stability and facile separability, demonstrating its feasibility for practical application. The present study provides a new strategy to construct heterostructures for environmental-friendly and efficient PS activation catalysts, and an in-depth understanding of the heterogeneous PS activation mechanism. Abstract:A stability-enhanced magnetic catalyst, composed of alpha-Fe2O3@Fe3O4 shell-core magnetic nanoparticles and graphene oxide (MGO), was prepared and characterized by scanning electron micrope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). Catalyst synthesis was used to efficiently activate persulfate for the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP). A magnetic nanoparticle:GO mass ratio of 5 (MGO-5) exhibited a better catalytic efficiency and could be effectively reused four times. The influences of the pollutant, catalyst, and oxidant concentrations were investigated, and the intrinsic relationships among these factors and the degradation kinetic constant were evaluated by a fitting method. It was found that the catalytic degradation process in the MGO-5-persulfate-2,4-DCP system was most likely dominated by an interfacial catalytic reaction, with an activation energy of 13.88 kJ/mol. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis indicated that both sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot(-)) and hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) were responsible for 2,4-DCP removal, but surface-bounded SO4 center dot(-) played a greater role. Chloride ions at a concentration of 0-60 mg/L had no effect on 2,4-DCP removal. The proposed advanced oxidation technology has potential applications for the practical removal of aqueous organic pollutants. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Structure-dependent catalysis of Co3O4 crystals in persulfate activation via nonradical pathway

Abstract:Co3O4 crystals with different shapes and surface structures were successfully synthesized. The shapes obtained included flower-like nanoplates (FN), nanocubes (NC), nanosheets (NS) and flake-stacked microsphere (FM). The shapes and surface structures of the Co3O4 catalysts significantly affected their catalytic activity. Among the as-synthesized Co3O4 catalysts, the NC sample displayed the highest catalytic activity in persulfate (PS) activation, achieving almost complete removal of 30 mg L−1 orange G (OG) within 10 min at the reaction conditions of 0.5 g L−1 catalyst and 8.0 mM PS. The excellent catalytic performance of NC sample could be ascribed to dominant exposed crystal plane and abundant surface hydroxyl groups. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and radical quenching tests demonstrated that reactive oxygen species (ROS) including sulfate radical (·SO4 −), hydroxyl radical (·OH), superoxide radical (·O2 –) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were generated in the NC/PS system, while 1O2 was dominantly attributed to the OG degradation. The exposed plane of (1 1 1) may be responsible for the generation of 1O2. The study dedicates a novel mechanism of PS heterogeneous activation by Co3O4 crystals and provides an ideal catalyst for efficient removal of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:A magnetic porous composite catalyst has been synthesized from CoFe2O4 and CuS. Its degradation performance towards organic pollutants in a heterogeneous photocatalytic system has been compared with those of the in-dividual photocatalysts and those of individual chemocatalysis systems. Orange II served as a target contaminant. Persulfate and catalyst were combined under visible light conditions to achieve degradation of the organic pollutant, whereupon the degradation efficiency reached up to 97 %. The catalyst has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Mott-Schottky analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and solid-state UV/Vis spectrophotometry. The influences of pH and different catalyst and persulfate loadings in the system have been studied. The results of quenching experiments showed non-radical degradation to be a major pathway, with singlet molecular oxygen (1O2) and photogenerated holes (h+) as the critical reactive species. Besides, the magnetic properties of the catalyst are conducive to its recycling, and it still showed high degradation efficiency after three cycles.

Abstract:A heterogeneous catalyst (M-N-rGO) composed of stability enhanced magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide was synthesized and characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, and XPS. It showed excellent catalytic degradation properties in advanced oxidation technology. In the presence of 200 mg/L catalyst and 135 mg/L persulfate at pH 5, 95% of 10–20 mg/L methylene blue could be degraded in 90 min with the TOC removal efficiency of 50%. The rate constant based on pseudo-first-order kinetics ranged from 0.0227 to 0.0488/min in the temperature range of 15 to 32 °C, and the activation energy was 32.5 kJ/mol. Under the optimal operation conditions, 20 mg/L of 2,4-dichlorophneol (2,4-DCP) could be removed almost completely. EPR analysis showed that sulfate and hydroxyl radicals were responsible for degradation of pollutants, and radical quenching experiments indicated that nonradical pathway also played a role in pollutant removal. And a mechanism for M-N-rGO and persulfate system was elucidated. This catalyst was easy for preparation, low-cost, highly effective, convenient for separation, and could be used effectively for four times through 0.1 mol/L H 2 SO 4 regeneration. It provided a choice for wastewater treatment in practice.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of persulfate (PS) activation that can quickly and effectively remove organic pollutants in water, a new catalytic material of carbon nitride supported Fe-Co diatom (FeCo@N-C) was prepared for PS activation to degrade orange II (OII). The XRD pattern showed that eight characteristic diffraction peaks, including CoFe 2O 4 diffraction absorption peaks. The FT-IR inferred that C-N/C=N, C=O, and O-H functional groups may exist. SEM observed the surface morphology of the synthetic material, and Fe and Co can be successfully loaded on the synthetic material. The activation effect of FeCo@N-C activator on PS was significantly improved, and the decoloration removal rate reached 81.66% at 20 min, 57% higher than the PS alone, FeCo@N-C activator had a good pH and temperature adaptability. FeCo@N-C activator could promoted the production of free radicals which can degrade OII efficiently.
Activated Carbon Supported Co3O4 Catalysts to Activate Peroxymonosulfate for Orange G Degradation

Abstract:Activated carbon supported cobalt catalysts (Co/AC) were prepared through wet impregnation and high temperature calcination methods. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) characterization results showed that CoO was the major form of Co species distributed on AC. The performance of Co/AC was evaluated as catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce sulfate radicals (SO·) for Orange G (OG) degradation in solution. The activation mechanism and several influential factors were also investigated. The results demonstrated that SO·played a dominant role in OG degradation. And the degradation efficiency of OG increased with increasing Co/AC dosage, higher PMS concentration or elevating reaction temperature. Initial pH had a significant effect on OG degradation, with pH range of 4 to 8 as the optimal pH for degradation. In addition, the strong acidic or alkaline conditions were unfavorable for OG degradation. A dual effect of chloride ions (Cl) was observed. The high Cl concentration promoted degradation, while low concentration led to inhibition. The Co/AC also exhibited excellent reusability and its activating performance toward PMS was still observed after 6 rounds of tests. Finally, the degradation process and intermediate products of OG were analyzed with UV-visible spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate activation are promising techniques for the removal of organic compounds in aqueous solutions. In the study, iron-immobilized resin chars were prepared by different methods and used as persulfate activators for the degradation of Orange G. The results showed that iron immobilization method had a significant effect on the reactivity of activator, which might be related to the distribution and chemical states of iron and sulfur elements in the sample. The activator prepared by doping method could be used over wide pH and temperature ranges and reused char still exhibited good performance for persulfate activation.

Abstract:We prepared Co@O-gCN as a means of activating peroxomonosulfate (PMS) to remove acid orange 7 (AO7). The effects of a series of considerations including catalyst amount, PMS dosage, pH and temperature on the degradation of AO7 were evaluated, and we discovered that the time needed to remove AO7 completely decreased as pH increased, and as the pH was adjusted to 11, the addition of 10 mg Co@O-gCN and 375 mg/L PMS resulted in the complete removal of 20 mg/L of AO7 within 10 min. The effects of coexisting anions and the actual water matrix in the process of removing AO7 by the Co@O-gCN /PMS system were investigated. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments revealed that under acidic as well as neutral conditions, Co (IV) was the main reactive species, whereas under alkaline conditions, the main reactive species changed to superoxide radicals (O2·−), followed by monoclinic oxygen (1O2).

Abstract:In recent years, metal-free carbocatalysis and persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes have appealed much attention due to the high efficiency and environmental sustainability. This study aimed to investigate catalytic performance of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on persulfate for removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol and elucidate the intrinsic mechanism of PS activation. Singlet oxygen (1O2) generation was hypothesized to be the dominant pathway for the nonradical organic oxidation. Carbonyl groups and structural defects were determined as the primary active sites via CNFs modification. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further unearthed that armchair and zigzag edges were favorable to electron transfer and vacancy sites enhanced PS adsorption on CNFs. A higher density of states (DOS) with lower π and σ electronic binding energies would make CNFs more active, and a lower work function (Ф) would lead to a lower inner electron excitation energy barrier to enhance the electron transfer. The degradation pathways were finally determined by combining mass spectrum analysis and DFT calculations (Fukui function), where 1O2 molecules were likely to attack the Cl and O atoms.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation (PMS-AOP) is a promising technology for the degradation of environmental pollutants. PMS can be activated by various transition metals, especially cobalt-based catalysts, but pure cobalt catalyst suffers from severe metal leakage and poor cyclicality. This study synthesized NiCo2O4 using a co-precipitation hydrothermal method. The structures, morphologies, and chemical states of the prepared catalysts were hexagonal sheet structures. The activation of PMS by catalyst (NiCo2O4) is investigated in a PMS/carbonate (PC) system for Orange II degradation. The observed pseudo-first-order rate constants (k1) were assessed by the effects of different water matrices and operation conditions. The results show that kobs with NiCo2O4 were increased by 13 times than that of treatment without NiCo2O4. This was mainly due to Co3+ and Ni3+ act as electron acceptors to capture electrons from the PMS/PC system, forming a good redox cycle with HSO5−/SO5− and oxidizing Co2+/Ni2+ to produce a large amount of more active components (e.g., 1O2 and SO4⋅-). The good reusability and high stability of NiCo2O4 were demonstrated by five recycle tests. These results suggest that the NiCo2O4/PC system is an efficient and stable method of pollution remediation.

Abstract:The construction of heterogeneous catalysts with high efficiency is significant for the degradation of persistent contaminants. Herein, the g-C3N4/AgFeO2 composite was fabricated and its composition, morphology and structure were systematically characterized. g-C3N4/AgFeO2 exhibited boosting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) cat-alytic performance on the degradation of Orange I (OI) than pure AgFeO2. It was optimized that the elimination of OI could be enhanced to 91%, with a kinetic rate of 0.076 min(-1). Such enhancement was attributed to the increment of low-valent metal species (Ag-0/Ag+, Fe2+/Fe3+) on AgFeO2 surface after coupling with g-C3N4, additionally, the synergy of g-C3N4 and AgFeO2 endowed the g-C3N4/AgFeO2 composite with higher conduc-tivity and more electron transfer, thereby promoting effective PMS decomposition. The leaching of metal ions in the g-C3N4/AgFeO2/PMS system was suppressed, which brought superior reusability and stability. It was verified that (O2,O2 center dot-,SO4 center dot-)-O-1 and center dot OH acting as the key reactive oxygen species contributed to the OI removal. Our findings provided valuable insights into the design of efficient and stable g-C3N4-based organometallic composites for advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient and environmentally friendly catalyst to activate persulfate (PS) is a promising technology for contaminants removal. Herein, a novel heterogeneous catalyst () was designed by supporting ferric oxalate (FeOxa) onto activated carbon fibers (ACFs). could activate PS to achieve a removal of 96.8% for Reactive Red M-3BE (RR M-3BE) within 20 min and the apparent rate constant (kobs) was 3.6 times higher than that of FeOxa/PS system. Moreover, was capable of excellent recyclability and a broad pH adaptability (3.0–10.0). Radical capturing experiments indicated that sulfate, hydroxyl and superoxide radicals played a key role for contaminants removal. Interestingly, the kobs of RR M-3BE was unexpectedly 4 times enhancement after the introduction of p-benzoquinone, which is very different from the previously system with a negative influence. This study will open a promising avenue for building highly efficient and eco-friendly catalyst to remediate contaminated water.

Synergistic Effect of Co3o4 Nanoparticles and Graphene As Catalysts for Peroxymonosulfate-Based Orange Ii Degradation with High Oxidant Utilization Efficiency

Abstract:Cobalt oxide and graphene nanocomposites (Co3O4/graphene) are fabricated as heterogeneous catalysts to accelerate sulfate radical generation in Orange II degradation. The Co3O4/graphene catalyst is characterized through X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the Co3O4/graphene catalysts are prepared successfully. Co3O4 or graphene solely exhibits slight catalytic activity, but their hybrid (Co3O4/graphene) efficiently degrades and removes Orange II from an aqueous solution in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Orange II is completely removed or degraded (100%) within 7 min by using the composite catalysts; by contrast, Orange II is partially removed when Co3O4 or graphene is used alone under the same conditions. These phenomena suggest a synergistic catalytic activity of Co3O4 and graphene in the hybrid. To investigate the causes of the synergistic interactions of the Co3O4/graphene composites, we summarize previous studies and propose an electron transfer pathway between Co3O4 and graphene. We then perform density functional theory calculations to describe the specific features of the composite structures. The hybrid structure is more conductive than the individual semiconductor cobalt oxide clusters because of the hybridization between Co-4d orbital and graphene-p orbital. Fukui indices of electrophilic attack indicate that Co2+, not Co3+, is the active site. Therefore, the PMS activation processes and Orange II degradation pathways are involved in an electrochemical process. Graphene functions as a wire because of its excellent electrical conductivity during oxidation.

Abstract:Low-cost and efficient catalysts are decisive for the broadened implementation of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in wastewater remediation. Based on the modified hypothesis by inducing a nonradical pathway, we designed the N-doped Co3O4 (N-Co3O4) for peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation by facile post-treatment of Co3O4 with N precursor at low temperature. The N-Co3O4/PDS system exhibited excellent degradation efficiency (98.7 %) in 1 h for the removal of typical organic pollutant (acid organic 7), enhanced by 41.4 % compared to Co3O4/ PDS. Remarkably, distinguish from sluggish degradation by Co3O4, N-Co3O4 achieved an enhanced kinetic process with the degradation efficiency of 97.7 % in 5 min, making it outstanding to save time and economic costs. We discovered the activation mechanism by N-Co3O4 covered the nonradical pathways of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) and electron transfer, overcoming the sole radical pathway of Co3O4. The emerging oxygen vacancies on N-Co(3)O(4)boosted the generation of active O-1(2) with .O-2(-) intermediates, and benefited the electron transfer process with lower resistance. N doping introduced Co-N basic sites facilitated the PDS adsorption, improving the electron transfer capability. This study proposes a facile protocol to convert transition metal oxide to functional catalyst and demonstrates the immense potential to create nonradical dominated degradation.

Abstract:In recent studies, carbon nanotube (CNTs) materials and their composites have demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity in the activation of persulfate (PS), facilitating the efficient degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, a novel Co loaded carbon nanotubes (CoO@CNT) catalyst was prepared to promote PDS activation for the degradation of sulfafurazole (SIZ). Experimental results, the CNT as a carrier effectively reduces the leaching of cobalt ions and improves the electron transport capacity,whereas the introduced Co effectively activates the PDS, promoting the generation of highly reactive radicals to degrade SIZ. Under optimized conditions (a catalyst dose of 0.2 g/L, a PDS dose of 1 g/L and an initial pH = 9.0), the obtained CoO@CNT demonstrated favorable Fenton-like performance, reaching a degradation efficiency of 95.55% within 30 min. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the introduction of cobalt (Co) accelerates electron transfer, promoting the decomposition of PDS while facilitating the Co2+/Co3+ redox cycling. We further employed the environmental chemistry and risk assessment system (ECOSAR) to evaluate the ecological toxicity of intermediate products, revealing a significant reduction in ecological toxicity associated with this degradation process, thereby confirming its environmental harmlessness. Through batch experiments and studies, we gained a comprehensive understanding of the mechanism and influencing factors of CoO@CNT in the role of SIZ degradation, and provided robust support for evaluating the ecological toxicity of degradation products. This study provides a significant strategy for the development of efficient catalysts incorporating Co for the environmentally friendly degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:MnCuS nanocomposites were prepared by one-pot simple hydrothermal method, the crystallinity and morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) respectively. Then, the materials were then used to activate persulfate (Na2S2O8) in Orange II degradation. The degradation efficiency of MnCuS with Mn:Cu mole ratio of 1:1 reached 98.2% within 120 min under visible light, which have higher efficiency than other mole ratios of samples or pure MnS and CuS, Furthermore, the nanocomposites also showed good recycling stability performance, and the degradation efficiency could still reach 97.1% even after three degradation cycles. The mechanism of activating Na2S2O8 by MnCuS is proposed as follows: the cycling of active sites of Cu(I)/Cu(II) and Mn(II)/Mn(III) catalyzed Na2S2O8 to produce sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-), which improved the catalytic degradation ability of MnCuS/Na2S2O8/visible light system.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a new approach for the activation of persulfate (PS) based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Fe/S modified carbon nanotubes (Fe/S-CNTs) were synthesized via impregnation–precipitation in the aqueous-phase synthesis method. The morphologies and chemical states of the catalysts were characterized and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) was selected to investigate the degradation performance using Fe/S-CNTs with PS. The results reveal that the Fe/S-CNTs catalysts can significantly accelerate the removal of 2,4-DCP compared to single PS or PS/CNTs. The catalytic capacity is also enhanced by S modification and is affected by the solution pH. The iron loading content, PS concentration and catalyst dosage could play important roles in the degradation. A non-radical process of 2,4-DCP degradation is demonstrated for the first time in the results of the radical scavengers and chloride ionic, as well as persulfate decomposition. It is suggested that PS is first bonded with the sp2-hybridized system and activated by iron oxide particles and iron-sulfur complexes, then it reacts rapidly with the adsorbed 2,4-DCP.
