Abstract:With the collection and analysis of the large dataset of sequential microstructure images by focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), 3D electrode microstructure can be reconstructed and quantitatively analyzed, which is important for understanding the performance and stability of the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Even though great efforts have been made on the developments for FIB-SEM imagining, reliable segmentation of the composing phases requires adequate image processing techniques. The conventional method for segmentation requires manual operation based on commercial software. The processing time is often in the range of weeks for a single dataset. In this work, an automated segmentation method with the deep learning network was proposed and tested, which was useful in shortening the image processing time by almost two orders of magnitude. Besides, the influences of various data augmentation operations for the training set on prediction accuracy were investigated, and the guidelines for selecting data augmentation operations for training sets of different sizes and structures were given. The feasibility of transfer learning between different microstructures was also tested. It was found that the prediction accuracy was significantly improved if 1/6 of the data included in the training set came from the same samples as the test set. For a Ni/YSZ anode of SOFC, the segmented images obtained by the conventional manual method (which could be regarded as ground truth) and the deep learning network were compared. The mean intersection over union (mIoU) score reached 93.63%, and the area fraction calculated from the ground truth and deep learning data showed good agreement.
