Abstract:The Cordyceps diversity in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, including 52 known species, is preliminarily analysed in this paper. The authors have divided thee species into 5 geographical elements, i.e. Cosmopolitan element (36.6%), Tropical element (5.8%), Asian element (3.8%), East Asian element (26.9%) and Endemic element to China (26.9%). Amongst these 5 geographical elements, cosmopolitan element is the main charcteristics in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that boletes are abundant and diverse in China, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. In the present study, morphological, ecological, host relationship, and a four-locus (28S, tef1, rpb1, and rpb2) molecular phylogenetic analyses were used to study the family Boletaceae in subtropical and tropical China. Four new bluing species are described from three genera, viz. Boletellus verruculosus (Chinese name), Xerocomellus tenuis (Chinese name), Xer. brunneus (Chinese name), and Xerocomus zhangii (Chinese name). Moreover, the genus Nigroboletus is treated as a synonym of Xerocomellus, and a new combination, namely Xer. roseonigrescens (Chinese name), is proposed.

Abstract:Species of Boletellus Section Chrysenteroidei are widely distributed in the world, especially in the subtropical to tropical regions. By means of molecular techniques, the species diversity of this section has become clearer and new taxa have been uncovered. In this study, a new species of this section from the southeast Yunnan of China, namely Boletellus wenshanensis, was identified based on molecular and morphological evidence. This species can be distinguised by the combination of morphological characters: a quick dark blue reaction on all parts of the basidiome when bruised, a brown to brownish orange pileus uncracking with age, a scaly stipe covered with brownish punctate squamules, yellow hymenophore, interwoven pileipellis, ellipsoid to broadly fusoid basidiospores ornamented with longitudinal ridges, and a hyphohymeniform stipitipellis. The new species is presented with illustrated description and comparisons with allied species.

Abstract:In this study, species relationships of the genus Aureoboletus were studied, based on both morphological characteristics and a four-gene (nrLSU, tef1-a , rpb1 and rpb2 ) phylogenetic inference. Thirty-five species of the genus have been revealed worldwide, forming eight major clades in the phylogenetic tree, of which twenty-four species have been found in China, including six new species: A. glutinosus , A. griseorufescens , A. raphanaceus , A. sinobadius , A. solus , A. velutipes and a new combination A. miniatoaurantiacus (Bi & Loh) Ming Zhang, N.K. Zeng & T.H. Li proposed here. A key to 24 known Chinese species has been provided.

Abstract:The family Boletaceae primarily represents ectomycorrhizal fungi, which play an essential ecological role in forest ecosystems. Although the Boletaceae family has been subject to a relatively global and comprehensive history of work, novel species and genera are continually described. During this investigation in northern China, many specimens of boletoid fungi were collected. Based on the study of their morphology and phylogeny, four new species, Butyriboletus pseudoroseoflavus, Butyriboletus subregius, Tengioboletus subglutinosus, and Suillellus lacrymibasidiatus, are introduced. Morphological evidence and phylogenetic analyses of the single or combined dataset (ITS or 28S, rpb1, rpb2, and tef1) confirmed these to be four new species. The evidence and analyses indicated the new species' relationships with other species within their genera. Detailed descriptions, color photographs, and line drawings are provided. The species of Butyriboletus in China were compared in detail and the worldwide keys of Tengioboletus and Suillellus were given.

Abstract:Cinnamomum chago (family Lauraceae) is an essential source of timber and oil. This plant is narrowly distributed in the western part of the Yunnan Province. In this study, the distribution, habitat, and biological characteristics of C. chago were examined through field investigation. The genetic diversity and the variation of the remnant populations were also studied using the inter-simple sequence repeat technique. Results showed that C. chago is mainly distributed in the upstream tributary mountains of Lancang River in Yunlong County of Yunnan Province. The species distribution exhibited a fragmented pattern with five isolated populations and high-frequency anthropogenic interference. A combination of morphological features (opposite leaves, pinnate leaf veins, absence of glandular fossa, large drupe, small punch, and pollen surface with triangular spike grain, with cushion bumps at the base) indicated that C. chago is a key phylogenetic taxon between the two sections of Asian Cinnamomum plants (Sect. Camphora (Trew) Meissn. and Sect. Cinnamomum). Analysis of the genetic diversity of C. chago indicated that it has a moderately high level of genetic diversity at the population and species levels (populations level: Ne = 1.629, H = 0.348, I = 0.504, and PPB = 83.3%; species level: Ne = 1.864, H = 0.460, I = 0.652, and PPB = 100%). Analysis of molecular variance revealed that 17% of the genetic variation was divided between the populations, whereas 83% was observed within the populations. Based on these results, we suggest the inclusion of C. chago in the Wild Plants with Extremely Small Populations in China. Moreover, the species should be given special attention and protection. Some strategies were proposed for the conservation of the C. chago populations.

Abstract:Boletaceae, the largest family in Boletales, has been attracted by mycologists in the world due to its diverse morphology and complex history of evolution. Although considerable work has been done in the past decades, novel taxa are continually described. The current study aimed to introduce three new taxa and one new record of Boletaceae from China. The morphological descriptions, color photographs, phylogenetic trees to show the positions of the taxa, and comparisons with allied taxa are provided. The new genus Hemilanmaoa is unique in the Pulveroboletus group, and Hemilanmaoa retistipitatus was introduced as the type species. It can be distinguished by its bluing basidioma when injured, a decurrent hymenophore, a stipe covered with distinct reticulations, and a fertile stipitipellis. Porphyrellus pseudocyaneotinctus is characterized by its pileipellis consisting of broadly concatenated cells and thin-walled caulocystidia in Porphyrellus. In Phylloporus, Phylloporus biyangensis can be distinguished by its hymenophores that change to blue when injured and yellow basal mycelium. Lanmaoa angustispora, as a new record, is first reported in Northern China. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS), 28S rDNA (28S), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1-alpha), RNA polymerase II subunit 1 (rpb1), and RNA polymerase II subunit 2 (rpb2) were employed to execute phylogenetic analyses.

Abstract:Aim:The study aims to better understand plant diversity in the border areas of Yunnan.These border areas have relatively intact forest ecosystems but are poorly explored. Methods:In this study,plants were collected and photographed through intensive field investigation,made into specimens,sorted and identified.The voucher specimens for each recorded species were deposited in the Herbarium of Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences(HITBC),Herbarium of Institute of Botany of Chinese Academy of Sciences(PE),Herbarium of Kunming Institute of Botany of Chinese Academy of Sciences(KUN)and Herbarium of Xiamen University(AU). Results:One new record family,namely Aptandraceae(Anacolosa griffithii),two new record genera,namely Pottingeria(P.acuminata),Cordisepalum(C.phalanthopetalum),thirty new record species,namely Phlogacanthus gomezii,Staurogyne shanica,Hydnocarpus macrocarpus,Alphonsea ventricosa,Huberantha jenkinsii,Miliusa chantaburiana,M.dioeca,Impatiens andersonii,Garcinia lanceifolia,Dillenia parviflora,Parashorea buchananii,Castanopsis birmanica,Heritiera burmensis,Phrynium pubinerve,Bulbophyllum obrienianum,B.sinhoense,Dendrobium dantaniense,D.parcum,Epipactis flava,Eulophia macrobulbon,Micropera mannii,Vanilla borneensis,Phyllanthus discofractus,P.mirabilis,Maesa tomentella,Sabia wardii,Ailanthus integrifolia subsp.calycina,Wikstroemia floribunda,Hedychium gardnerianum,Monolophus linearis,were reported for the flora of China. Conclusion:The border area of Yunnan possesses one of the richest floras in China,but the floristic survey in this area is still inadequate.Therefore,intensive floristic surveys are needed to be strengthened in the future to obtain reliable information on the flora of the border areas of Yunnan.

Genetic Resources and Crop Evolution

Abstract:Based on literature sources and the authors’ field surveys in the past 20 years (particularly in 2008 and 2009), a checklist of cultivated plants of Yunnan (Southwest China) was compiled. It contains 1,701 taxa belonging to 1,562 different species, 837 genera and 190 families. The alphabetically ordered articles for the taxa contain the botanical name, the plant family, Chinese name and folk names, details of plant uses, information about the plant’s regional distribution, places of origin, and references to relevant, mostly Yunnan literature sources. The checklist provides a useful tool for the exploration of plant genetic resources and may be equally interesting for agronomists, horticulturists, botanists, ethnobotanists and others who are interested in cultivated plants.

Abstract:Yunnan of southwestern China supports an extremely rich biodiversity and various vegetation types dominated by evergreen broad-leaved forest. The floristic composition, species diversity, physiognomy and biogeography of three major types of the evergreen broad-leaved forest in Yunnan were surveyed using 1-ha plots. The three forest types are very diverse in species composition, diversity, physiognomy and biogeography, although they are commonly dominated by species of the families Fagaceae, Theaceae and Lauraceae. The lower montane evergreen broad-leaved forest (LMEB) in southern Yunnan is extremely rich in species and is characterized by a tropical physiognomy and dominated by tropical Asian species, similar to the tropical lower montane evergreen forest commonly in southeast Asia. The semi-wet evergreen broad-leaved forest (SWEB) on plateaus and the upper montane evergreen broad-leaved forest (UMEB) in central and northern Yunnan are characterized by a subtropical physiognomy and are dominated by Sino-Himalayan and Chinese endemic species, and are unique in southwestern China. The SWEB and the UMEB should be given high conservation values due to their uniqueness and abundant Chinese endemic species. Especially, the SWEB should be given the highest protection because most remnants of this forest have lost due to heavily human disturbance.

Abstract:Yunnan is exceedingly rich in higher fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota). Given that the number of fungi (including lichens) occurring in a given area is, as Hawksworth suggested, roughly six times that of local vascular plants, a total of approximately 104,000 fungal species would be expected in Yunnan. However, to date only about 6000 fungal species, including roughly 3000 species of higher fungi, have been reported from the province. Although studies on Yunnan's fungi started in the late nineteenth century, significant progress has been made only in the last forty-five years. Over the first twenty-five years of this period, studies on fungal diversity in this area have largely been about taxonomy based on morphological characters and partially on geographical distribution. Over the past twenty years, the combination of both morphological and molecular phylogenetic approaches has become the preferred method to help understand the diversity and evolution of higher fungi. This review focuses on our current knowledge of how geological, geographical, and ecological factors may have contributed to the diversity patterns of higher fungi in Yunnan. Based on this knowledge, three aspects for future studies are suggested.

Abstract:Fungi of the order Boletales are extremely important in both ecology and economy, since most of them are ectomycorrhizal fungi, which play vital roles in maintaining forest ecosystems, water and soil protection, vegetation restoration and so on. Although previous studies have shown that this order has a very high species diversity in China, there are few reports on the species diversity of boletes in Jiangxi Province, China. Based on morphological (macroscopic and microscopic morphological characteristics) and phylogenetic analyses (ITS, LSU, and TEF1-α sequences), in this study, the wild boletes in Jiangxi Province were investigated, and five new species are described: Austroboletus albus, Xanthoconium violaceipes, Xanthoconium violaceofuscum, Xerocomus rutilans and Xerocomus subsplendidus. Descriptions and hand drawings of the new species are presented.

Abstract:This paper deals with floristics and the ecological distribution of bryophytes in the evergreen broadleaved forests of Daweishan Nature Reserve (22°28′～22°45′ N, 103°39′～103°5l′ E) by means of the Point Central Quarter Method. A total of 134 species representing 34 families and 66 genera were reported, among them 59 species (44. 0% of the total) belonging to East Asian elements, and 53 species (39. 6%) to tropical ones. The ecological distribution of bryophytes in the evergreen broadleaved forests of Daweishan Nature Reserve can be divided into four main types: (1) Epixylophytia (2) Geophytia; (3) Petrophytia; (4) Epiphyllitia. By Kroeber's percentage of similarity, the index of similarity is high among Daweishan Nature Reserve, Baishanzu Nature Reserve and Huaping Nature Reserve at the level of family and genus. It, however, is low at species level. Chinese names of eight species, Brotherella complanata, Brotherella curvirostris, Clastobryopsis robusta, Sinskea flammeum, Sinskea phuea, Toloxis semitorta, Trachycladiella aurea and Trachycladiella sparsa, are newly given.

Abstract:Based on the data collected in an RAP (rapid assessment procedure) evaluation made of the biodiversity in the southwestern China, 1385 species of seed plants are recorded in Kangding, Danba and Yajiang, which belong to 486 genera and 115 families. Among them, 5 families, 12 genera and 36 species fall into the category of gymnosperms, and 110 families, 474 genera and 1349 species into the category of angiosperms. The floristic analysis showed that the flora is of an old origin with complex geographic components. Viewed as a whole, the flora demonstrates striking transitional characteristics. At the family and genus level the flora shows obvious temperate and pan-tropic taxon features. The dominant families, genera and species are prominent. Monotypic and oligotypic species are also abundant.

Abstract:Aureoboletus tenuis sp. nov. is described from Guangxi Province, China. It is characterized by slender basidiomes with a glutinous, wrinkled, and light brown or reddish-brown to dark brown pileus. LSU sequence analysis confirms placement of the new species in Aureoboletus. A colour plate showing fruitbodies in situ and illustrations of microscopic elements are provided.

Abstract:China is one of the world's richest countries in terms ot biodiversity,which has been seriously threatened.In 2010,to effectively protect biodiversity,the State Council of China authorized the Protection Strategy and Action Plan of China Biological Diversity (Year 2010-2030),in which 32 terrestrial Biodiversity Priority Areas were delineated as preferential areas,and background surveys of biodiversity in these areas were also discussed.To protect biodiversity,the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the People's Republic of China,alongside various research institutions such as Chinese Academy of Sciences and universities,conducted biodiversity background surveys at the county level in 18 counties in Northwest Yunnan of the southern section of the Hengduan Mountains Area from 2010 to 2011.The survey included ecosystems and species.At the ecosystem level,the survey investigated the diversity of vegetation formations within each county.At the species level,the survey investigated diversity of species composition,quantity,and usage of higher plants,vertebrates,and macro-fungi,analyzed the quantities of endemic,rare,and endangered species.The survey culminated in a species inventory at the county level.Based on the survey results,a comparative analysis of biodiversity composition among different counties was conducted.Among the 18 investigated counties,Yulong County,Jianchuan County,Gucheng District,Shangri-La County,and Eryuan County have relatively abundant ecosystem types.While all of these counties have more than 48 formations,Yulong County has the largest number of formations (108 formations).The formations of other counties ranged from 20 to 40.Yulong County not only has the richest vegetation formations,it also has the most abundant number of species (including 4,550 higher plants,625 vertebrates,and 222 macro-fungi).The region also has a high proportion of endemic species.With respect to higher plants,the ratio of endemic species in most of the counties is about 20％,however,the ratio can approach or exceed 50％.With respect to animal species,the ratio of endemic species in most of the counties is about 10％,with the highest ratio in Heqing County,where 46 endemic species account for 17％ of the total species.The authors hold that a comprehensive biodiversity survey is a necessary basis and hence suggest that this study be taken as a case for large-scale biodiversity investigations in the future.
