Abstract:The path complex and its homology were defined in previous papers of the authors. The notion of a path complex is a natural discrete generalization of the notion of a simplicial complex. The theory of path complexes contains homotopy invariant homology theory of digraphs and (nondirected) graphs. In the paper we study the homology theory of path complexes. In particular, we describe functorial properties of paths complexes, introduce the notion of homotopy for path complexes and prove the homotopy invariance of path homology groups. We prove also several theorems that are similar to the results of classical homology theory of simplicial complexes. Then we apply this approach to construct homology theories on various categories of hypergraphs. We describe basic properties of these homology theories and relations between them. As a particular case, these results give new homology theories on the category of simplicial complexes. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Homology Homotopy and Applications

Abstract:In the paper we continue the investigation of the path homology theory of digraphs that was constructed in our previous papers. We prove basic theorems that are similar to the theorems of classical algebraic topology and introduce several natural constructions of digraphs which are very helpful to investigate the path homology theory. We describe relation of our results to the Eilenberg-Steenrod axiomatic of homology theory.

Abstract:We introduce a homotopy theory of digraphs (directed graphs) and prove its basic properties, including the relations to the homology theory of digraphs constructed by the authors in previous papers. In particular, we prove the homotopy invariance of homologies of digraphs and the relation between the fundamental group of the digraph and its first homology group. The category of (undirected) graphs can be identified by a natural way with a full subcategory of digraphs. Thus we obtain also consistent homology and homotopy theories for graphs. Note that the homotopy theory for graphs coincides with the one constructed in [1] and [2].
On the path homology of Cayley digraphs and covering digraphs

Abstract:We develop a theory of covering digraphs, similar to the theory of covering spaces. By applying this theory to Cayley digraphs, we build a "bridge" between GLMY-theory and group homology theory, which helps to reduce path homology calculations to group homology computations. We show some cases where this approach allows us to fully express path homology in terms of group homology. To illustrate this method, we provide a path homology computation for the Cayley digraph of the additive group of rational numbers with a generating set consisting of inverses to factorials. The main tool in our work is a filtered simplicial set associated with a digraph, which we call the filtered nerve of a digraph.

Abstract:The cohomology of digraphs was introduced for the first time by Dimakis and Muller-Hoissen. Their algebraic definition is based on a differential calculus on an algebra of functions on the set of vertices with relations that follow naturally from the structure of the set of edges. A dual notion of homology of digraphs, based on the notion of path complex, was introduced by the authors, and the first methods for computing the (co) homology groups were developed. The interest in homology on digraphs is motivated by physical applications and relations between algebraic and geometrical properties of quivers. The digraph G(B) of the partially ordered set B-S of simplexes of a simplicial complex S has graph homology that is isomorphic to the simplicial homology of S. In this paper, we introduce the concept of cubical digraphs and describe their homology properties. In particular, we define a cubical subgraph G(S) of G(B), whose homologies are isomorphic to the simplicial homologies of S.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a primitive path homology theory on the category of simple digraphs. On the subcategory of asymmetric digraphs, this theory coincides with the path homology theory which was introduced by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau, but these theories are different in general case. We study properties of the primitive path homology and describe relations between the primitive path homology and the path homology. Let $a,b$ two different vertices of a digraph. Our approach gives a possibility to construct primitive homology theories of paths which have a given tail vertex $a$ or (and) a given head vertex $b$. We study these theories and describe also relationships between them and the path homology theory.

Abstract:We construct a cohomology theory on a category of finite digraphs (directed graphs), which is based on the universal calculus on the algebra of functions on the vertices of the digraph. We develop necessary algebraic technique and apply it for investigation of functorial properties of this theory. We introduce categories of digraphs and (undirected) graphs, and using natural isomorphism between the introduced category of graphs and the full subcategory of symmetric digraphs we transfer our cohomology theory to the category of graphs. Then we prove homotopy invariance of the introduced cohomology theory for undirected graphs. Thus we answer the question of Babson, Barcelo, Longueville, and Laubenbacher about existence of homotopy invariant homology theory for graphs. We establish connections with cohomology of simplicial complexes that arise naturally for some special classes of digraphs. For example, the cohomologies of posets coincide with the cohomologies of a simplicial complex associated with the poset. However, in general the digraph cohomology theory can not be reduced to simplicial cohomology. We describe the behavior of digraph cohomology groups for several topological constructions on the digraph level and prove that any given finite sequence of non-negative integers can be realized as the sequence of ranks of digraph cohomology groups. We present also sufficiently many examples that illustrate the theory.

Abstract:In \cite{TY}, we consider the minimal paths in the path complex associated to a digraph $G$ under the strongly regular condition. In this paper, first, based on our new definitions of admissible pair and admissible relations among the set of minimal paths, we will give the definitions of cellular chain complex associated to $G$ and prove the well-definedness. Then we will study several properties of such cellular homologies. Finally, we give several interesting examples as well as some important observations.

Abstract:For a digraph $G$ without multisquares and a field $\mathbb{F}$, we construct a basis of the vector space of path $n$-chains $\Omega_n(G;\mathbb{F})$ for $n\geq 0$, generalising the basis of $\Omega_3(G;\mathbb{F})$ constructed by Grigory'an. For a field $\mathbb{F},$ we consider the $\mathbb{F}$-path Euler characteristic $\chi^\mathbb{F}(G)$ of a digraph $G$ defined as the alternating sum of dimensions of path homology groups with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}.$ If $\Omega_\bullet(G;\mathbb{F})$ is a bounded chain complex, the constructed bases can be applied to compute $\chi^\mathbb{F}(G)$. We provide an explicit example of a digraph $\mathcal{G}$ whose $\mathbb{F}$-path Euler characteristic depends on whether the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}$ is two, revealing the differences between GLMY theory and the homology theory of spaces. This allows us to prove that there is no topological space $X$ whose homology is isomorphic to path homology of the digraph $H_*(X;\mathbb{K})\cong {\rm PH}_*(\mathcal{G};\mathbb{K})$ simultaneously for $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{K}=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}.$

The geometric realization of regular path complexes via (co-)homology

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give the geometric realization of regular path complexes via (co)homology groups with coefficients in a ring R. Concretely, for each regular path complex P, we associate it with a singular Δ-complex S(P) and show that the (co)homology groups of P are isomorphic to those of S(P) with coefficients in R. As a direct result we recognize path (co)homology as Hochschild (co)homology in case that R is commutative and P regular finite. Analogues of the Eilenberg-Zilber theorem and Künneth formula are also showed for the Cartesian product and the join of two regular path complexes. In fact, we meanwhile improve some previous results which are covered by these conclusions in this paper.

Abstract:To a digraph with a choice of certain integral basis, we construct a CW complex, whose integral singular cohomology is canonically isomorphic to the path cohomology of the digraph as introduced in \cite{GLMY}. The homotopy type of the CW complex turns out to be independent of the choice of basis. After a very brief discussion of functoriality, this construction immediately implies some of the expected but perhaps combinatorially subtle properties of the digraph cohomology and homotopy proved very recently \cite{GLMY2}. Furthermore, one gets a very simple expected formula for the cup product of forms on the digraph. On the other hand, we present an approach of using sheaf theory to reformulate (di)graph cohomologies. The investigation of the path cohomology from this framework, leads to a subtle version of Poincare lemma for digraphs, which follows from the construction of the CW complex.

Abstract:We define the notions of Reidemeister torsion and analytic torsion for directed graphs by means of the path homology theory introduced by the authors in \cite{Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2013, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2014, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2015, Grigoryan-Lin-Muranov-Yau2020}. We prove the identity of the two notions of torsions as well as obtain formulas for torsions of Cartesian products and joins of digraphs.

Abstract:In this article, we show that magnitude homology and path homology are closely related, and we give some applications. We define differentials ${\mathrm MH}^{\ell}_k(G) \longrightarrow {\mathrm MH}^{\ell-1}_{k-1}(G)$ between magnitude homologies of a digraph $G$, which make them chain complexes. Then we show that its homology ${\mathcal MH}^{\ell}_k(G)$ is non-trivial and homotopy invariant in the context of `homotopy theory of digraphs' developed by Grigor'yan--Muranov--S.-T. Yau et al (G-M-Ys in the following). It is remarkable that the diagonal part of our homology ${\mathcal MH}^{k}_k(G)$ is isomorphic to the reduced path homology $\tilde{H}_k(G)$ also introduced by G-M-Ys. Further, we construct a spectral sequence whose first page is isomorphic to magnitude homology ${\mathrm MH}^{\ell}_k(G)$, and the second page is isomorphic to our homology ${\mathcal MH}^{\ell}_k(G)$. As an application, we show that the diagonality of magnitude homology implies triviality of reduced path homology. We also show that $\tilde{H}_k(g) = 0$ for $k \geq 2$ and $\tilde{H}_1(g) \neq 0$ if any edges of an undirected graph $g$ is contained in a cycle of length $\geq 5$.

Abstract:We study two simplicial complexes arising from a directed graph $G = (V, E)$ with two chosen vertices $s$ and $t$: the *path-free complex*, consisting of all subsets $F \subseteq E$ that contain no path from $s$ to $t$, and the *path-missing complex*, its Alexander dual. Using discrete Morse theory, we prove that both complexes have well-behaved homotopy types -- either contractible or homotopy-equivalent to spheres.

Abstract:Digraphs are generalizations of graphs in which each edge is assigned with a direction or two directions. In this paper, we define discrete Morse functions on digraphs, and prove that the homology of the Morse complex and the path homology are isomorphic for a transitive digraph. We also study the collapses defined by discrete gradient vector fields. Let $G$ be a digraph and $f$ a discrete Morse function. Assume the out-degree and in-degree of any zero-point of $f$ on $G$ are both 1. We prove that the original digraph $G$ and its $\mathcal{M}$-collapse $\tilde{G}$ have the same path homology groups.
