Abstract:Thousands of fuel elements in a pebble bed reactor were lifted one by one from the bottom to the top of the core by pneumatically conveying each day.A dynamic model of pneumatic near-diameter spheres in pipeline transportation(PNSP) was established to describe the pneumatically conveying process. The effect of the structural parameters on the motion characteristics of fuel elements was studied using the model. The results show that with increasing diameter ratio and pipeline inclination, the spheres speed up quickly and accelerate to a higher velocity and that with larger recovery coefficient, the spheres more severely collide with the pipe. The results also show that the balanced velocity of the spheres is lower than that of the gas,and significantly increases with increasing diameter ratio.Decreasing of the bend turning radius and the diameter ratio is useful to limit the final velocity of the spheres as well as the impact on the core. The experimental results are consistent with the theoretical analyses. The research provides references for the design and structural optimization of the fuel element cycling system in a pebble bed reactor.
