Abstract:Among myriads of new energy sources, hydrogen is an ideal substitute for fossil fuel. In the long term, hydrogen is likely to replace petrol and become the major energy supply for vehicles. According to previous surveys, many international automobile giants have begun the implementation of hydrogen fuel systems to their products. Hydrogen can be produced through reforming natural gas, petrol, and ethanol. However, ethanol reforming is preferred due to its superior process characteristics such as a high content of hydrogen, easy storage, and convenient transportation. Due to the process's thermodynamical behaviour, previous research into ethanol steam reforming has focused on comparing the performances of different catalysts. Those catalysts include noble and non-noble metal catalysts. This article reviewed the recent research results on different catalysts under various reaction conditions. The reaction selectivity and catalyst activity are the two key parameters that determine whether an experiment is successful. In general, high temperature, ambient pressure and high water/ethanol ratio are preferred to render a better hydrogen conversion rate and extent.
