Abstract:An acyclic edge coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring such that no bichromatic cycles are produced.The acyclic chromatic index a'(G) of G is the smallest integer k such that G has an acyclic edge coloring using k colors.In this paper,we determine completely the acyclic chromatic indices of K4-minor free graphs with maximum degree not equal to 4.

Abstract:An acyclic edge coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring such that there are no bichromatic cycles in G. The acyclic chromatic index Xα′(G)$$\cal{X}_{\alpha}^{\prime}(G)$$ of G is the smallest k such that G has an acyclic edge coloring using k colors. It was conjectured that every simple graph G with maximum degree Δ has Xα′(G)≤Δ+2$$\cal{X}_{\alpha}^{\prime}(G)\le\Delta+2$$. A 1-planar graph is a graph that can be drawn in the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we show that every 1-planar graph G without 4-cycles has Xα′(G)≤Δ+22$$\cal{X}_{\alpha}^{\prime}(G)\le\Delta+22$$.

Abstract:An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper coloring of the graph, for which every cycle uses at least three colors. Let G4 be the set of maximal planar graphs of minimum degree 4, such that each graph in G4 contains exactly four odd-vertices and the subgraph induced by the four odd-vertices contains a quadrilateral. In this article, we show that every acyclic 4-coloring of a maximal planar graph with exact four odd-vertices is locally equitable with regard to its four odd-vertices. Moreover, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph in G4 to be acyclically 4-colorable, and give an enumeration of the acyclically 4-colorable graphs in G4.

Abstract:An acyclic edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring without any bichromatic cycles. The acyclic chromatic index of a graph $G$ denoted by $a'(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring with $k$ colors. Fiamč\'ık conjectured that $a'(G) \le \Delta+2$ for any graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta$. A graph $G$ is said to be $k$-degenerate if every subgraph of $G$ has a vertex of degree at most $k$. Basavaraju and Chandran proved that the conjecture is true for $2$-degenerate graphs. We prove that for a $3$-degenerate graph $G$, $a'(G) \le \Delta+5$, thereby bringing the upper bound closer to the conjectured bound. We also consider $k$-degenerate graphs with $k \ge 4$ and give an upper bound for the acyclic chromatic index of the same.

Abstract:A (k, r)-coloring of a graph G is a proper k-vertex coloring of G such that the neighbors of each vertex of degree d will receive at least min{d, r} different colors. The r-hued chromatic number, denoted by χr (G), is the smallest integer k for which a graph G has a (k, r)-coloring. Let f ( r ) = r + 3 if 1 ≤ r ≤ 2, f ( r ) = r + 5 if 3 ≤ r ≤ 7 and f ( r ) = ⌊ 3 r / 2 ⌋ + 1 if r ≥ 8. In [Discrete Math., 315-316 (2014) 47-52], an extended conjecture of Wegner is proposed that if G is planar, then χr (G) ≤ f(r); and this conjecture was verified for K 4-minor free graphs. For an integer n ≥ 4, let K 4(n) be the set of all subdivisions of K 4 on n vertices. We obtain decompositions of K 4(n)-minor free graphs with n ∈ {5, 6, 7}. The decompositions are applied to show that if G is a K 4(7)-minor free graph, then χr (G) ≤ f(r) if and only if G is not isomorphic to K 6.

Abstract:An acyclic k-coloring of a graph is a proper vertex k-coloring such that every bichromatic subgraph, induced by this coloring, contains no cycles. A graph is acyclically k-colorable if it has an acyclic k-coloring. In this paper, we prove that every acyclically 4-colorable triangulation with minimum degree more than 3 contains at least four odd-vertices. Moreover, we show that for an acyclically 4-colorable triangulation with minimum degree 4, if it contains exactly four odd-vertices, then the subgraph induced by its four odd-vertices is triangle-free and claw-free.

Abstract:A k -edge coloring of a graph G is injective if for any three consecutive edges and of a path or a triangle. The injective chromatic index of G is the smallest k such that G admits an injective k -edge coloring. By discharging method, we demonstrate that any graph with maximum degree has (resp. 13) if its maximum average degree is less than (resp. 3), which improves the results of Zhu (2023).

Abstract:In 1965, Vizing proved that every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta\geq 8$ is edge $\Delta$-colorable. It is also proved that every planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $\Delta=7$ is edge $\Delta$-colorable by Sanders and Zhao, independently by Zhang. In this paper, we extend the above results by showing that every $K_5$-minor free graph with maximum degree $\Delta$ at least seven is edge $\Delta$-colorable.

Minimizing the number of edges in $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs

Abstract:Given graphs $H_1, H_2$, a {red, blue}-coloring of the edges of a graph $G$ is a critical coloring if $G$ has neither a red $H_1$ nor a blue $ H_2$. A non-complete graph $G$ is $(H_1, H_2)$-co-critical if $G$ admits a critical coloring, but $G+e$ has no critical coloring for every edge $e$ in the complement of $G$. Motivated by a conjecture of Hanson and Toft from 1987, we study the minimum number of edges over all $(C_4, K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs on $n$ vertices. We show that for all $k \ge 2 $ and $ n \ge k +\lfloor \sqrt {k-1} \rfloor +2$, if $G$ is a $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graph on $n$ vertices, then \[e(G) \ge \frac{(k+2)n}2-3- \frac{(k-1)(k+ \lfloor \sqrt {k-2}\rfloor)}2.\] Moreover, this linear bound is asymptotically best possible for all $k\ge3$ and $n\ge3k+4$. It is worth noting that our constructions for the case when $ k$ is even have at least three different critical colorings. For $k=2$, we obtain the sharp bound for the minimum number of edges of $(C_4, K_{1,2})$-co-critical graphs on $n\ge5 $ vertices by showing that all such graphs have at least $2n-3$ edges. Our proofs rely on the structural properties of $(C_4,K_{1,k})$-co-critical graphs and a result of Ollmann on the minimum number of edges of $C_4$-saturated graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a graph of order n, and let A(G) and D(G) be the adjacency matrix and the degree matrix of G respectively. Define the convex linear combinations A(a) (G) of A(G) and D(G) by A(a)(G) = aD(G)+(1-a)A(G) for any real number 0 = a = 1. The a-index of G is the largest eigenvalue of A(a )(G). In this paper, using some new eigenvector techniques introduced by Tait and coworkers, we determine the maximum a-index and characterize all extremal graphs for Kr minor-free graphs, K-s,K-t minor-free graphs, and star -forest-free graphs for any 0 < a < 1 respectively.

In 2001,Alon et al.conjectured that the acyclic chromatic number of any simple graph G is no more than Δ( G) + 2,whereΔ( G) is the maximum degree of G. In order to prove the conjecture is true for planar graphs,in this paper,we proved that the acyclic chromatic number of planar graphs without 3 cycles is no more than Δ( G) + 3 with discharging method.

Abstract:Let G be a graph and k a positive integer. A strong k -edge-coloring of G is a mapping such that for any two edges e and that are either adjacent to each other or adjacent to a common edge, . The strong chromatic index of G , denoted as , is the minimum integer k such that G has a strong k -edge-coloring. Lv, Li and Zhang [Graphs and Combinatorics 38 (3) (2022) 63] proved that if G is a claw-free subcubic graph other than the triangular prism then . In addition, they asked if the upper bound 8 can be improved to 7. In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative. Our proof implies a polynomial-time algorithm for finding strong 7-edge-colorings of such graphs. We also construct infinitely many claw-free subcubic graphs with their strong chromatic indices attaining the bound 7.

Abstract:A strong k-edge-coloring of a graph G is an assignment of k colors to the edges of G in such a way that any two edges meeting at a common vertex, or being adjacent to the same edge of G, are assigned different colors. The strong chromatic index of G is the smallest integer k for which G has a strong k-edge-coloring. In this paper, we have shown that the strong chromatic index is no larger than 6 for outerplanar graphs with maximum degree 3.

Abstract:An acyclic $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a $k$-coloring of its vertices such that no cycle of $G$ is bichromatic. $G$ is called acyclically $k$-colorable if it admits an acyclic $k$-coloring. In this paper, we prove that the generalized Petersen graph $P(n,k)$ is acyclically 3-colorable except $P(4,1)$ and the classical Petersen graph $P(5,2)$.

Abstract:An acyclic colouring of a graph is a proper colouring of the graph, for which every cycle uses at least three colours. In this paper, we describe a method for constructing all 4-connected acyclically 4-colourable planar triangulations that have exactly four odd-vertices, except the ones that contain no adjacent odd-vertices. Unlike previous operations, our method successfully establishes a connection with (acyclic) 4-colourings. Moreover, we discuss a special class of graphs, called diamond triangulations, and give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diamond triangulation to be acyclically 4-colourable.

Abstract:For a planar graph $G$, Borodin stated that $G$ is $(\Delta+1)$-edge-choosable if $\Delta \geq9$ and later Bonamy showed that $G$ is $9$-edge-choosable if $\Delta=8$. At the same time, Borodin et al. proved that $G$ is $\Delta$-edge-choosable if $\Delta\geq12$. In the paper, we extend these results to $K_5$-minor free graphs.

4-Chromatic Graphs Have At Least 4 Cycles of Length $0 \bmod 3$

Abstract:A 2018 conjecture of Brewster, McGuinness, Moore, and Noel asserts that for $k \ge 3$, if a graph has chromatic number greater than $k$, then it contains at least as many cycles of length $0 \bmod k$ as the complete graph on $k+1$ vertices. Our main result confirms this in the $k=3$ case by showing every $4$-critical graph contains at least $4$ cycles of length $0 \bmod 3$, and that $K_4$ is the unique such graph achieving the minimum. We make progress on the general conjecture as well, showing that $(k+1)$-critical graphs with minimum degree $k$ have at least as many cycles of length $0\bmod r$ as $K_{k+1}$, provided $k+1 \ne 0 \bmod r$. We also show that $K_{k+1}$ uniquely minimizes the number of cycles of length $1\bmod k$ among all $(k+1)$-critical graphs, strengthening a recent result of Moore and West and extending it to the $k=3$ case.

Abstract:We work with simple graphs in ZF (Zermelo--Fraenkel set theory without the Axiom of Choice (AC)) and assume that the sets of colors can be either well-orderable or non-well-orderable to prove that the following statements are equivalent to Kőnig Lemma: (a) Any infinite locally finite connected graph G such that the minimum degree of G is greater than k, has a chromatic number for any fixed integer k greater than or equal to 2. (b) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a chromatic index. (c) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing number. (d) Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a distinguishing index. Our results strengthen some results of Stawiski from a recent paper on the role of the Axiom of Choice in proper and distinguishing colorings since he assumed that the sets of colors can be well-ordered. We also formulate new conditions for the existence of irreducible proper coloring, minimal edge cover, maximal matching, and minimal dominating set in connected bipartite graphs and locally finite connected graphs, which are either equivalent to AC or Kőnig Lemma. Moreover, we show that if the Axiom of Choice for families of 2 element sets holds, then the Shelah--Soifer graph has a minimal dominating set.
