Abstract:(Abridged) We have conducted a total intensity and polarization survey of the Galactic plane at 6 cm using the Urumqi 25 m telescope for the Galactic longitude range of 10 deg<l<60 deg and the Galactic latitude range of |b|<5 deg. Missing absolute zero levels of Stokes U and Q maps were restored by extrapolating the WMAP five-year K-band polarization data. For total intensities we recovered missing large-scale components by referring to the Effelsberg 11 cm survey. Total intensity and polarization maps are presented with an angular resolution of 9.5 arcmin and a sensitivity of 1 mK and 0.5 mK in total and polarized intensity, respectively. The 6 cm polarized emission in the Galactic plane originates within about 4 kpc distance, which increases for polarized emission out of the plane. The polarization map shows "patches", "canals" and "voids" with no correspondence in total intensity. We attribute the patches to turbulent magnetic field cells. Canals are caused by abrupt variation of polarization angles at the boundaries of patches rather than by foreground Faraday Screens. The superposition of foreground and Faraday Screen rotated background emission almost cancels polarized emission locally, so that polarization voids appear. By modelling the voids, we estimate the Faraday Screen's regular magnetic field along the line-of-sight to be larger than about 8 microG. We separated thermal (free-free) and non-thermal (synchrotron) emission according to their different spectral indices. The spectral index for the synchrotron emission was based on WMAP polarization data. The fraction of thermal emission at 6 cm is about 60% in the plane.

Abstract:We study the spectral and polarization properties of supernova remnants (SNRs) based on our 6cm survey data. The observations were taken from the Sino-German 6cm polarization survey of the Galactic plane. By using the integrated flux densities at 6cm together with measurements at other wavelengths from the literature we derive the global spectra of 50 SNRs. In addition, we use the observations at 6cm to present the polarization images of 24 SNRs. We derived integrated flux densities at 6cm for 51 small SNRs with angular sizes less than 1 degree. Global radio spectral indices were obtained in all the cases except for Cas A. For SNRs G15.1-1.6, G16.2-2.7, G16.4-0.5, G17.4-2.3, G17.8-2.6, G20.4+0.1, G36.6+2.6, G43.9+1.6, G53.6-2.2, G55.7+3.4, G59.8+1.2, G68.6-1.2, and G113.0+0.2, the spectra have been significantly improved. From our analysis we argue that the object G16.8-1.1 is probably an HII region instead of a SNR. Cas A shows a secular decrease in total intensity, and we measured a flux density of 688+/-35 Jy at 6cm between 2004 and 2008. Polarized emission from 25 SNRs were detected. For G16.2-2.7, G69.7+1.0, G84.2-0.8 and G85.9-0.6, the polarized emission is detected for the first time confirming them as SNRs. High frequency observations of SNRs are rare but important to establish their spectra and trace them in polarization in particular towards the inner Galaxy where Faraday effects are important.

Abstract:Context: Observations of polarized emission are a significant source of information on the magnetic field that pervades the Interstellar Medium of the Galaxy. Despite the acknowledged importance of the magnetic field in interstellar processes, our knowledge of field configurations on all scales is seriously limited. Aims: This paper describes an extensive survey of polarized Galactic emission at 1.4 GHz that provides data with arcminute resolution and complete coverage of all structures from the broadest angular scales to the resolution limit, giving information on the magneto-ionic medium over a wide range of interstellar environments. Methods: Data from the DRAO Synthesis Telescope, the Effelsberg 100-m Telescope, and the DRAO 26-m Telescope have been combined. Angular resolution is ~1' and the survey extends from l = 66 deg to l = 175 deg over a range -3 deg < b < 5 deg along the northern Galactic plane, with a high-latitude extension from l = 101 deg to l = 116 deg up to b = 17.5 deg. This is the first extensive polarization survey to present aperture-synthesis data combined with data from single antennas, and the techniques developed to achieve this combination are described. Results: The appearance of the extended polarized emission at 1.4 GHz is dominated by Faraday rotation along the propagation path, and the diffuse polarized sky bears little resemblance to the total-intensity sky. There is extensive depolarization, arising from vector averaging on long lines of sight, from HII regions, and from diffuse ionized gas seen in H-alpha images. Preliminary interpretation is presented of selected polarization features on scales from parsecs (the planetary nebula Sh 2-216) to hundreds of parsecs (a supperbubble GSH 166-01-17) to kiloparsecs (polarized emission in the direction of Cygnus X).

Abstract:We present a survey of ~800 square degrees of the galactic plane observed with the QUaD telescope. The primary product of the survey are maps of Stokes I, Q and U parameters at 100 and 150 GHz, with spatial resolution 5 and 3.5 arcminutes respectively. Two regions are covered, spanning approximately 245-295 and 315-5 degrees in galactic longitude l, and -4<b<+4 degrees in galactic latitude b. At 0.02 degree square pixel size, the median sensitivity is 74 and 107 kJy/sr at 100 GHz and 150 GHz respectively in I, and 98 and 120 kJy/sr for Q and U. In total intensity, we find an average spectral index of 2.35+/-0.01 (stat) +/- 0.02 (sys) for |b|<1 degree, indicative of emission components other than thermal dust. A comparison to published dust, synchrotron and free-free models implies an excess of emission in the 100 GHz QUaD band, while better agreement is found at 150 GHz. A smaller excess is observed when comparing QUaD 100 GHz data to WMAP 5-year W band; in this case the excess is likely due to the wider bandwidth of QUaD. Combining the QUaD and WMAP data, a two-component spectral fit to the inner galactic plane (|b|<1 degree) yields mean spectral indices of -0.32 +/- 0.03 and 2.84 +/- 0.03; the former is interpreted as a combination of the spectral indices of synchrotron, free-free and dust, while the second is attributed largely to the thermal dust continuum. In the same galactic latitude range, the polarization data show a high degree of alignment perpendicular to the expected galactic magnetic field direction, and exhibit mean polarization fraction 1.38+/-0.08 (stat) +/-0.1 (sys) % at 100 GHz and 1.70 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.1 (sys) % at 150GHz. We find agreement in polarization fraction between QUaD 100 GHz and WMAP W band, the latter giving 1.1 +/- 0.4 %.

Abstract:Radio continuum and polarization observations of the entire Cygnus Loop at λ6 cm wavelength were made with the Urumqi 25 m telescope. The A6 cm map is analysed together with recently published maps from the Effelsberg 100 m telescope at λ21 cm and Al 1 cm. The integrated flux density of the Cygnus Loop at A6 cm is 90 ± 9 Jy, which implies a spectral index of a = -0.40 ± 0.06. This rules out any global spectral steepening up to A6 cm. However, small spectral index variations in some regions of the source are possible, but there are no indications for any spectral curvature. The linear polarization data at λ6 cm show percentage polarizations up to 35% in some areas of the Cygnus Loop, exceeding those observed at All cm. The Rotation Measure is around -21 rad m -2 in the southern area, which agrees with previous observations. However, the distribution of Rotation Measures is rather complex in the northern part of the Cygnus Loop, where the λ21 cm emission is totally depolarized. Rotation Measures based on Al 1 cm and A6 cm data are significantly larger than in the southern part. The difference in the polarization characteristics between the northern and southern part supports previous ideas that the Cygnus Loop consists of two supernova remnants.
Submillimeter Polarization of Galactic Clouds: A Comparison of 350 micron and 850 micron Data

Abstract:The Hertz and SCUBA polarimeters, working at 350 micron and 850 micron respectively, have measured the polarized emission in scores of Galactic clouds. Of the clouds in each dataset, 17 were mapped by both instruments with good polarization signal-to-noise ratios. We present maps of each of these 17 clouds comparing the dual-wavelength polarization amplitudes and position angles at the same spatial locations. In total number of clouds compared, this is a four-fold increase over previous work. Across the entire data-set real position angle differences are seen between wavelengths. While the distribution of \phi(850)-\phi(350) is centered near zero (near-equal angles), 64% of data points with high polarization signal-to-noise (P >= 3\sigma_p) have |\phi(850)-\phi(350)| > 10 degrees. Of those data with small changes in position angle (<= 10 degrees) the median ratio of the polarization amplitudes is P(850)/P(350) = 1.7 +/- 0.6. This value is consistent with previous work performed on smaller samples and models which require mixtures of different grain properties and polarization efficiencies. Along with the polarization data we have also compiled the intensity data at both wavelengths; we find a trend of decreasing polarization with increasing 850-to-350 micron intensity ratio. All the polarization and intensity data presented here (1699 points in total) are available in electronic format.

Abstract:Following the detection of polarized diffuse Galactic emission in 1962 a number of surveys were undertaken at low frequencies in the following years resulting in important insights on the local magnetic field, polarization of the giant radio loops and other Galactic structures, as well as on the properties of the diffuse magnetized interstellar medium. This field of research experienced a revival in the eighties and nineties by a number of high resolution observations at low and high frequencies, which showed a large variety of polarization structures having no corresponding signature in the total intensity images. 'Canals' and 'Faraday screens' were reported, which clearly indicate that Faraday rotation in the magneto-ionic medium may largely vary on small scales. These findings called for a systematic approach and a number of new unbiased polarization surveys were started. Also new attempts for absolute calibration are under way, which is a critical issue when interpreting polarization structures. This paper reviews polarization survey projects and also summarizes recent results and interpretations of this rather active field of research.

Abstract:We present arcminute-resolution intensity and polarization maps of the Galactic center made with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The maps cover a 32 deg$^2$ field at 98, 150, and 224 GHz with $\vert l\vert\le4^\circ$, $\vert b\vert\le2^\circ$. We combine these data with Planck observations at similar frequencies to create coadded maps with increased sensitivity at large angular scales. With the coadded maps, we are able to resolve many known features of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) in both total intensity and polarization. We map the orientation of the plane-of-sky component of the Galactic magnetic field inferred from the polarization angle in the CMZ, finding significant changes in morphology in the three frequency bands as the underlying dominant emission mechanism changes from synchrotron to dust emission. Selected Galactic center sources, including Sgr A*, the Brick molecular cloud (G0.253+0.016), the Mouse pulsar wind nebula (G359.23-0.82), and the Tornado supernova remnant candidate (G357.7-0.1), are examined in detail. These data illustrate the potential for leveraging ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background polarization experiments for Galactic science.

Abstract:Abstract We present a radio polarization study of the supernova remnant CTB 80 based on images at 1420 MHz from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, at 2695 MHz from the Effelsberg survey of the Galactic plane and at 4800 MHz from the Sino-German λ6 cm polarization survey of the Galactic plane. We obtained a rotation measure (RM) map using polarization angles at 2695 MHz and 4800 MHz as the polarization percentages are similar at these two frequencies. RM exhibits a transition from positive values to negative values along one of the shells hosting the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and its pulsar wind nebula. The reason for the change in sign remains unclear. We identified a partial shell structure, which is bright in polarized intensity but weak in total intensity. This structure could be part of CTB 80 or part of a new supernova remnant unrelated to CTB 80.

Abstract:We present deep polarimetric observations at 154 MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), covering 625 deg^2 centered on RA=0 h, Dec=-27 deg. The sensitivity available in our deep observations allows an in-band, frequency-dependent analysis of polarized structure for the first time at long wavelengths. Our analysis suggests that the polarized structures are dominated by intrinsic emission but may also have a foreground Faraday screen component. At these wavelengths, the compactness of the MWA baseline distribution provides excellent snapshot sensitivity to large-scale structure. The observations are sensitive to diffuse polarized emission at 54' resolution with a sensitivity of 5.9 mJy beam^-1 and compact polarized sources at 2.4' resolution with a sensitivity of 2.3 mJy beam^-1 for a subset (400 deg^2) of this field. The sensitivity allows the effect of ionospheric Faraday rotation to be spatially and temporally measured directly from the diffuse polarized background. Our observations reveal large-scale structures ( 1 deg - 8 deg in extent) in linear polarization clearly detectable in 2 minute snapshots, which would remain undetectable by interferometers with minimum baseline lengths >110 m at 154 MHz. The brightness temperature of these structures is on average 4 K in polarized intensity, peaking at 11 K. Rotation measure synthesis reveals that the structures have Faraday depths ranging from -2 rad m^-2 to 10 rad m^-2 with a large fraction peaking at +1 rad m^-2. We estimate a distance of 51+/-20 pc to the polarized emission based on measurements of the in-field pulsar J2330-2005. We detect four extragalactic linearly polarized point sources within the field in our compact source survey. Based on the known polarized source population at 1.4 GHz and non-detections at 154 MHz, we estimate an upper limit on the depolarization ratio of 0.08 from 1.4 GHz to 154 MHz.

Abstract:We present the results of simultaneous 450 mu m and 850 mu m polarization observations toward the massive star-forming region NGC 2071IR, a target of the BISTRO (B-fields in STar-forming Region Observations) Survey, using the POL-2 polarimeter and SCUBA-2 camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. We find a pinched magnetic field morphology in the central dense core region, which could be due to a rotating toroidal disklike structure and a bipolar outflow originating from the central young stellar object IRS 3. Using the modified Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method, we obtain a plane-of-sky magnetic field strength of 563 +/- 421 mu G in the central similar to 0.12 pc region from 850 mu m polarization data. The corresponding magnetic energy density of 2.04 x 10(-8) erg cm(-3) is comparable to the turbulent and gravitational energy densities in the region. We find that the magnetic field direction is very well aligned with the whole of the IRS 3 bipolar outflow structure. We find that the median value of polarization fractions is 3.0% at 450 mu m in the central 3 ' region, which is larger than the median value of 1.2% at 850 mu m. The trend could be due to the better alignment of warmer dust in the strong radiation environment. We also find that polarization fractions decrease with intensity at both wavelengths, with slopes, determined by fitting a Rician noise model of 0.59 +/- 0.03 at 450 mu m and 0.36 +/- 0.04 at 850 mu m, respectively. We think that the shallow slope at 850 mu m is due to grain alignment at the center being assisted by strong radiation from the central young stellar objects.

Abstract:The low dust temperatures (<14 K) of Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) make them ideal targets to probe the initial conditions and very early phase of star formation. “TOP-SCOPE” is a joint survey program targeting ∼2000 PGCCs in J = 1–0 transitions of CO isotopologues and ∼1000 PGCCs in 850 μm continuum emission. The objective of the “TOP-SCOPE” survey and the joint surveys (SMT 10 m, KVN 21 m, and NRO 45 m) is to statistically study the initial conditions occurring during star formation and the evolution of molecular clouds, across a wide range of environments. The observations, data analysis, and example science cases for these surveys are introduced with an exemplar source, PGCC G26.53+0.17 (G26), which is a filamentary infrared dark cloud (IRDC). The total mass, length, and mean line mass (M/L) of the G26 filament are ∼6200 M☉, ∼12 pc, and ∼500 M☉ pc−1, respectively. Ten massive clumps, including eight starless ones, are found along the filament. The most massive clump as a whole may still be in global collapse, while its denser part seems to be undergoing expansion owing to outflow feedback. The fragmentation in the G26 filament from cloud scale to clump scale is in agreement with gravitational fragmentation of an isothermal, nonmagnetized, and turbulent supported cylinder. A bimodal behavior in dust emissivity spectral index (β) distribution is found in G26, suggesting grain growth along the filament. The G26 filament may be formed owing to large-scale compression flows evidenced by the temperature and velocity gradients across its natal cloud.

Abstract:A VLA Sky Survey of the extragalactic sky at S band (2-4 GHz) with polarization information can uniquely probe the magneto-ionic medium in a wide range of astrophysical environments over cosmic time. For a shallow all-sky survey, we expect to detect over 4 million sources in total intensity $>$ 0.45 mJy beam$^{-1}$ and over 2.2$\times$10$^5$ sources in polarized intensity. With these new observations, we expect to discover new classes of polarized radio sources in very turbulent astrophysical environments and those with extreme values of Faraday depth. Moreover, by determining reliable Faraday depths and by modeling depolarization effects, we can derive properties of the magneto-ionic medium associated with AGNs, absorption line systems and galaxies, addressing the following unresolved questions: (1) What is the covering fraction, the degree of turbulence and the origin of absorption line systems? (2) What is the thermal content in AGNs and radio galaxies? (3) How do AGNs and galaxies evolve over cosmic time? (4) What causes the increase in percentage polarization with decreasing flux densities at the low flux density end of the polarized source count? (5) What is the growth rate of large-scale magnetic fields in galaxies?

Abstract:We present the data of an unbiased J = 1–0 12 CO/ 13 CO/C 18 O survey of molecular clouds in the Galactic plane over l = [129.°75, 140.°25] and b = [−5.°25, +5.°25]. For the full 10.°5 × 10.°5 region sampled at 30″, there are 1,590,120 spectra for each isotopologue. The high sensitivity and large spatial dynamic range of the maps provide valuable insights into the structure, physical properties, and kinematics of the molecular gas. The new data successfully trace the most distant spiral arm, as well as the internal subfeatures of the nearby spiral arms. The combined data set of 12 CO, 13 CO, and C 18 O allows us to make a more accurate inventory of gas column density and mass for molecular gas within this Galactic interval than hitherto attempted. A statistical analysis reveals that a large fraction of the observed molecular gas is emitted from regions with low excitation conditions. As expected, a considerable amount of H 2 mass is found to be confined to the spiral arms. Moreover, we find that the C 18 O emission is exclusively seen along spiral arms at current detection limits. The physical properties of molecular gas vary considerably in different spiral arms and inter-arms. We find that the column density probability density functions and the amount of relatively denser gas (traced by 13 CO or C 18 O) appear to be closely related to the level of massive star formation activity within the molecular gas. The high-quality data also reveal that the warp and flare of the Galactic plane become obvious beyond the Perseus arm in this Galactic longitude range.

Abstract:We present the first data release (DR1) of the Far-Infrared Polarimetric Large Area CMZ Exploration (FIREPLACE) survey. The survey was taken using the 214-micron band of the HAWC+ instrument with the SOFIA telescope (19.6$'$ resolution; 0.7 pc). In this first data release we present dust polarization observations covering a ~0.5$°$ region of the Galactic Center's Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), approximately centered on the Sgr B2 complex. We detect ~25,000 Nyquist-sampled polarization pseudovectors, after applying the standard SOFIA cuts for minimum signal-to-noise in fractional polarization and total intensity of 3 and 200, respectively. Analysis of the magnetic field orientation suggests a bimodal distribution in the field direction. This bimodal distribution shows enhancements in the distribution of field directions for orientations parallel and perpendicular to the Galactic plane, which is suggestive of a CMZ magnetic field configuration with polodial and torodial components. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of individual clouds included in our survey (i.e., Sgr B2, Sgr B2-NW, Sgr B2-Halo, Sgr B1, and Clouds-E/F) shows these clouds have fractional polarization values of 1--10% at 214-micron, with most of the emission having values $<$5%. A few of these clouds (i.e., Sgr B2, Clouds-E/F) show relatively low fractional polarization values toward the cores of the cloud, with higher fractional polarization values toward the less dense periphery. We also observe higher fractional polarization towards compact HII regions which could indicate an enhancement in the grain alignment in the dust surrounding these sources.

Abstract:The Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) project is an unbiased Galactic plane CO survey for mapping regions of l=-10deg to +250deg and |b|<5.2deg with the 13.7 m telescope of the Purple Mountain Observatory. The legacy survey aims to observe the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (J=1-0) lines simultaneously with full sampling using the nine-beam Superconducting SpectroScopic Array Receiver (SSAR) system with an instantaneous bandwidth of 1 GHz. In this paper, the completed 250 deg^2 data from l=+25.8deg to +49.7deg are presented with a grid spacing of 30" and a typical rms noise level of ~0.5 K for 12CO at the channel width of 0.16 km/s and ~0.3 K for 13CO and C18O at 0.17 km/s. The high quality data with moderate resolution (50"), uniform sensitivity, and high spatial dynamic range, allow us to investigate the details of molecular clouds (MCs) traced by the three CO isotope lines. Three interesting examples are briefly investigated, including distant Galactic spiral arms traced by CO emission with VLSR<0 km/s, the bubble-like dense gas structure near the HII region W40, and the MCs distribution perpendicular to the Galactic plane.

Abstract:We present observations and CMB foreground analysis of the Parkes Galactic Meridian Survey (PGMS), an investigation of the Galactic latitude behaviour of the polarized synchrotron emission at 2.3 GHz with the Parkes Radio Telescope. The survey consists of a 5-deg wide strip along the Galactic meridian l=254-deg extending from Galactic plane to South Galactic pole. We identify three zones distinguished by polarized emission properties: the disc, the halo, and a transition region connecting them. The halo section lies at latitudes |b| > 40-deg and has weak and smooth polarized emission mostly at large scale with steep angular power spectra of median slope $\beta_{\rm med} \sim -2.6$. The disc region covers the latitudes |b|<20-deg and has a brighter, more complex emission dominated by the small scales with flatter spectra of median slope $\beta_{\rm med} = -1.8$. The transition region has steep spectra as in the halo, but the emission increases toward the Galactic plane from halo to disc levels. The change of slope and emission structure at $b \sim -20\degr$ is sudden, indicating a sharp disc-halo transition. The whole halo section is just one environment extended over 50-deg with very low emission which, once scaled to 70GHz, is equivalent to the CMB B-Mode emission for a tensor-to-scalar perturbation power ratio r_halo = 3.3 +/- 0.4 x 10^{-3}. Applying a conservative cleaning procedure, we estimate an r detection limit of $\delta r \sim 2\times 10^{-3}$ at 70~GHz (3-sigma C.L.) and, assuming a dust polariztion fraction <12%, $\delta r \sim 1\times 10^{-2}$ at 150~GHz. The 150-GHz limit matches the goals of planned sub-orbital experiments, which can therefore be conducted at this high frequency. The 70-GHz limit is close to the goal of proposed next generation space missions, which thus might not strictly require space-based platforms.
