Abstract:With the complexity growth of embedded systems, the compression of embedded applications' code become more and more important. Several code compression methods have been presented nowadays. They all merge the same code sequences in binary code to increase code density. Among them, the pure software method can be used most widely and easily. However, it is not compatible with the architecture that has only one stack used for both data and subroutine calling. In this paper, we improve this method to make it compatible with that architecture.
Design, Implementation of the Parallel C Language Based on C/S Mode in Distributed Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we designed Parallel C Language, a kind of parallel programming Language, to implement parallel computing in distributed systems. It is to add some special identification statements on ANSI C Language. The parallel computing is based on C/S mode, incorporating multithread and RPC(remote procedure call). Multithread is used to cut tasks and concurrent the subtasks, and RPC is used to deploy and execute the subtasks on remote server nodes. The allocation of remote server nodes is dependent on load balancing mechanism. We also implemented the Pre-compiler of this Parallel C Language program, which parses the Parallel C Language program into several RPC application files. The other RPC application files are constructed by RPCGEN. The result of test shows that using this Parallel C Language to program in distributed systems reduces the codes size and makes full use of the system resources and improves efficiency.

Abstract:IoT application development usually involves separate programming at the device side and server side. While separate programming style is sufficient for many simple applications, it is not suitable for many complex applications that involve complex interactions and intensive data processing. We propose EdgeProg, an edge-centric programming approach to simplify IoT application programming, motivated by the increasing popularity of edge computing. With EdgeProg, users could write application logic in a centralized manner with an augmented If-This-Then-That (IFTTT) syntax and virtual sensor mechanism. The program can be processed at the edge server, which can automatically generate the actual application code and intelligently partition the code into device code and server code, for achieving the optimal latency. EdgeProg employs dynamic linking and loading to deploy the device code on a variety of IoT devices, which do not run any application-specific codes at the start. Results show that EdgeProg achieves an average reduction of 20.96%, 27.8% and 79.41% in terms of execution latency, energy consumption, and lines of code compared with state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract:The C programming language is expressive and flexible, but not safe; as its expressive power and flexibility are obtained through unsafe language features, and improper use of these features can lead to program bugs whose causes are hard to identify. Since C is widely used, and it is impractical to rewrite all existing C programs in safe languages, so ways must be found to make C programs safe. This paper deals with the unsafe features of C and presents a survey on existing solutions to make C programs safe. We have studied binary-level instrumentation tools, source checkers, source-level instrumentation tools and safe dialects of C, and present a comparison of different solutions, summarized the strengths and weaknesses of different classes of solutions, and show measures that could possibly improve the accuracy or alleviate the overhead of existing solutions.
Timing and memory optimization for embedded systems

Abstract:Embedded systems with strict timing requirement and limited memory resources present demanding challenges as well as new opportunities for optimization techniques. This dissertation endeavors to show that our optimization techniques considering timing, code size, and data mapping enhance the code quality and performance of the compiled code of DSP applications in magnitudes. Our approach based on fundamental studies of design parameters and optimization objectives such as retiming, software pipelining, unfolding, schedule length, and code size, etc. After we clearly understand their properties and the underlying relationships among them, solid theoretical foundations are established, and also, new algorithms are developed for new optimization techniques. Since most embedded processors employ separated on-chip program memory and data memory—one program memory and sometimes multiple data memory banks, our optimization techniques target optimization objectives for both program memory and multiple data memory banks. Because the performance of computation-intensive applications greatly depends on time-critical code sections, such as loops, we develop various optimization techniques work for either simple loops or nested loops. Our techniques out-perform many other approaches that only consider basic blocks. In particular, we solve the code size expansion problem for software-pipelined and unfolded loops by Code-size REDuction technique (CRED); we solve the problem of software pipelining for nested loops by Software PIpelining framework of NEsted loops (SPINE); we develop new technique to optimize data mapping for multiple memory module architectures; and we apply our optimization techniques to a new approach of design space exploration for obtaining superior design solutions. As a result, our research results directly benefit scheduling, code generation, design space exploration and architectural-level synthesis for applications in embedded systems.

GA Based Inlining Optimization in Front-End Synthesis of Embedded Software

Abstract:The front-end optimization of embedded software has attracted a lot of interest in recent years. Since most computation is consumed in small fraction of code called hot path or computation kernel, even a bit performance improvement in hot path can result in great promotion, hence, function inlining become one of the effective techniques because taking away the function calling overhead will speed up the hot path. Most of previous work inlines functions globally, and also causes unwanted code increment in cold path. In our approach to function inlining, Accurate Functions Dependency Graph (AFDG) is presented to accurately modeling the function calling behavior, and the inlining optimization is carried out according to profiling data on AFDG, so that functions are partially inlined, and code increment in cold path is prevented. In order to get a satisfactory solution from the tremendous solution space in short time, a meta-heuristic genetic algorithm (GA) is applied. In experiments, the proposed algorithm shows promising results compared with previous work.
Efficient Code Size Reduction Without Performance Loss

Abstract:For many embedded applications, program code size is a critical design factor for its relationship with limited memory, energy and communication bandwidth. While pursuing better code redundancy elimination in compilation time, people also began to focus on better encoding. Some RISC processors, such as ARM, MIPS and UniCore, support a 32bit/16bit dual-width instruction set. Mixed code generation is introduced in expectation of achieving both higher code density from the 16-bit instruction set and good performance from the 32-bit one, with little extra cost.We describe a new fine-grained mixed code generation scheme in this paper. We introduce into the 32-bit ISA a new 16-bit Mode-Changing instruction set which has the following features: firstly, the operation of the instructions are very common in UniCore32 programs and are appropriate to be coded into 16 bits; secondly, they can switch the current processor mode while performing their own operations. We implement the mixed code generation at link time in our compilation toolchain. Our experiments show that this scheme is successful in better encoding a program's computations to reduce code size without sacrificing performance. In addition, there are little modifications to micro-architecture, ensuring good compatibility with the original instruction set architecture.

Abstract:This paper presents a complete suit of systematic optimizing methods which may be used in parallelizing compilers for multicomputers or computer clusters. In the compilation scheme, two strategy are adopted. One is trading off parallelism and communication cost and the other is reducing and hiding communication overhead. Through analyzing the properties of data communication required for the program partition approach based on affine functions, the authors find a method to exploit parallelism in aerial programs satisfying the special requirements of distributed memory machines. In order to minimize the total of data needing to be communicated, they invent a global optimization program partition method based on solving linear equations. In order to optimize the organization of communication codes and generate more efficient node programs, they invent a more practical method based on linear inequalities to perform communication optimization and node programs generation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that existing cache technology has computational complexity and poor applicability, instruction cache optimization techniques based on statistic analysis by using GNU coverage analysis tool and performance analysis tools are proposed. It uses optimization techniques,including optimized cache line coloring algorithm,static use of cache locking and code selectively non-caching,can significantly improve the efficiency of instruction cache reading. Also a Cache Locking Selection Sorting( CLSS) is proposed to evaluate the code segment which can be locked or non-cached. Simulations show that these techniques make the program running time reduced by 8% ,and make the cache hit rate increased by 23% .

Abstract:In embedded systems, the frequent execution of software drives the activities of hardware, which causes the energy consumption of systems. In this paper, we first propose an improved C source-level code program energy model by considering the energy consumption of instruction fetching phase, in which a accurate energy algorithm is used. Then, we implement a method to dynamically calculate the run-time energy consumption between program breakpoints through GDB. The simulation experiment results show that, at the same condition, we can obtain the more accurate energy consumption values between program breakpoints flexibly through GDB, and this provides some conveniences for us to optimize the program energy consumption in the future.

Abstract:The ShenWei many-core series processors powering multiple cutting-edge supercomputers are equipped with their unique on-chip heterogeneous architecture. They have long required programmers to write separate codes for the control part on Management Processing Element (MPE) and accelerated part on Compute Processing Element (CPE), which is similar to open standards like OpenCL. Such a programming model results in shattered code and bad maintainability, and also make it hard to migrate existing projects targeting commodity processors. Borrowing the experience from CUDA and DPC++ and leveraging the unique unified main memory on ShenWei many-core architecture, we propose ShenWei Universal C/C++ (SWUC), a language extension to C/C++ that enables fluent programming acrossing the boundary of MPE and CPE. Through the use of several new attributes and compiler directives, users are able to write codes running on MPE and CPE in a single file. In case of C++, SWUC further support lambda expressions on CPEs, making it possible to have the code flow better matching the logical design. SWUC also manages to make the Athread library interfaces available, easing the learning curve for original ShenWei users. These powerful features together ensures SWUC to simplify the programming on ShenWei many-core processors and migration of existing C/C++ applications.

Abstract:We have implemented support for Padauk microcontrollers, tiny 8-Bit devices with 60 B to 256 B of RAM, in the Small Device C Compiler (SDCC), showing that the use of (mostly) standard C to program such minimal devices is feasible. We report on our experience and on the difficulties in supporting the hardware multithreading present on some of these devices. To make the devices a better target for C, we propose various enhancements of the architecture, and empirically evaluated their impact on code size.

Abstract:Manual engineering of high-performance implementations typically consumes many resources and requires in-depth knowledge of the hardware. Compilers try to address these problems; however, they are limited by design in what they can do. To address this, we present CryptOpt, an automatic optimizer for long stretches of straightline code. Experimental results across eight hardware platforms show that CryptOpt achieves a speed-up factor of up to 2.56 over current off-the-shelf compilers.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of multimedia and game, these applications put more and more pressure on the processing ability of modern processors. Multiple SIMD architecture is widely used in multimedia processing field as a multimedia accelerator. With the consideration of power consumption and chip size, shared memory multiple SIMD architecture is mainly used in embedded SOCs. In order to further fit mobile environment, there is the constraint of limited register number as well. Although shared memory multiple SIMD architecture simplify the chip design, these constraints are the major obstacles to map the real multimedia applications to these architectures. Until now, to our best knowledge, there is little research on the optimizing techniques for shared memory multiple SIMD architecture.In this paper, we present a compiler framework, which aims at automatically generating high performance codes for shared memory multiple SIMD architecture. In this framework, we reduce the competition of shared data bus through increasing the register locality, improve the utilization of data bus by read-only data vector replication and solve the problem of limited register number through a resource allocation algorithm. The framework also handlers the issues concerning on data transformation. As the experimental results shown, this framework is successful in mapping real multimedia applications to shared memory multiple SIMD architecture. It leads to an average speedup by a factor of 3.19 and an average utilization of SM-SIMD architecture with 8 SIMD units by a factor of 52.6%.
Finding missed optimizations through the lens of dead code elimination

Abstract:Compilers are foundational software development tools and incorporate increasingly sophisticated optimizations. Due to their complexity, it is difficult to systematically identify opportunities for improving them. Indeed, the automatic discovery of missed optimizations has been an important and significant challenge. The few existing approaches either cannot accurately pinpoint missed optimizations or target only specific analyses. This paper tackles this challenge by introducing a novel, effective approach that --- in a simple and general manner --- automatically identifies a wide range of missed optimizations. Our core insight is to leverage dead code elimination (DCE) to both analyze how well compilers optimize code and identify missed optimizations: (1) insert "optimization markers" in the basic blocks of a given program, (2) compute the program's live/dead basic blocks using the "optimization markers", and (3) identify missed optimizations from how well compilers eliminate dead blocks. We essentially exploit that, since DCE heavily depends on the rest of the optimization pipeline, through the lens of DCE, one can systematically quantify how well compilers optimize code. We conduct an extensive analysis of GCC and LLVM using our approach, which (1) provides quantitative and qualitative insights regarding their optimization capabilities, and (2) uncovers a diverse set of missed optimizations. Our results also lead to 84 bug reports for GCC and LLVM, of which 62 have already been confirmed or fixed, demonstrating our work's strong practical utility. We expect that the simplicity and generality of our approach will make it widely applicable for understanding compiler performance and finding missed optimizations. This work opens and initiates this promising direction.

Abstract:This paper presents an intermediate language level optimization framework for dynamic binary translation. Performance is important to a dynamic binary translation system, so there has been a growing interest in exploring new optimization algorithms. The framework proposed in this paper includes efficient profiling, hot code recognition and smart code cache management policies. Profiling is responsible for collecting runtime information, which will be used by hot code recognition and code cache management algorithms. We only focus on recognizing the hottest code, and assign priorities to basic blocks according to their hotness to facilitate code cache management.
