Abstract:A new compilation approach based on grouped tasks was proposed for optimal compilation of dynamically reconfigurable architecture. By partitioning an application algorithm into tasks, a task flow graph was established. Based on communication data between tasks and the size of local data memory, the executing order of tasks was determined. Tasks were grouped with loading configuration data and executing tasks overlapping in time domain. For each grouped tasks, loop transformation was applied to diminish the frequence of reading configuration data, which resulted in improved application performance. Experiment result showed that the compilation approach can efficiently improve the execution speed of the applied algorithm on dynamically reconfigurable architecture.

Abstract:As software becomes larger, programming languages become higher-level, and processors continue to fail to be clocked faster, we'll increasingly require compilers to reduce code bloat, eliminate abstraction penalties, and exploit interesting instruction sets. At the same time, compiler execution time must not increase too much and also compilers should never produce the wrong output. This paper examines the problem of making optimizing compilers faster, less buggy, and more capable of generating high-quality output.

Abstract:This paper presents a meta-compilation framework, the MCompiler. The main idea is that different segments of a program can be compiled with different compilers/optimizers and combined into a single executable. The MCompiler can be used in a number of ways. It can generate an executable with higher performance than any individual compiler, because each compiler uses a specific, ordered set of optimization techniques and different profitability models and can, therefore, generate code significantly different from other compilers. Alternatively, the MCompiler can be used by researchers and compiler developers to evaluate their compiler implementation and compare it to results from other available compilers/optimizers. A code segment in this work is a loop nest, but other choices are possible. This work also investigates the use of Machine Learning to learn inherent characteristics of loop nests and then predict during compilation the most suited code optimizer for each loop nest in an application. This reduces the need for profiling applications as well as the compilation time. The results show that our framework improves the overall performance for applications over state-of-the-art compilers by a geometric mean of 1.96x for auto-vectorized code and 2.62x for auto-parallelized code. Parallel applications with OpenMP directives are also improved by the MCompiler, with a geometric mean performance improvement of 1.04x (up to 1.74x). The use of Machine Learning prediction achieves performance very close to the profiling-based search for choosing the most suited code optimizer: within 4% for auto-vectorized code and within 8% for auto-parallelized code. Finally, the MCompiler can be expanded to collect metrics other than performance to be used in optimization process. The example presented is collecting energy data.

Abstract:There is a trend towards increased specialization of data management software for performance reasons. In this paper, we study the automatic specialization and optimization of database application programs -- sequences of queries and updates, augmented with control flow constructs as they appear in database scripts, UDFs, transactional workloads and triggers in languages such as PL/SQL. We show how to build an optimizing compiler for database application programs using generative programming and state-of-the-art compiler technology. We evaluate a hand-optimized low-level implementation of TPC-C, and identify the key optimization techniques that account for its good performance. Our compiler fully automates these optimizations and, applied to this benchmark, outperforms the manually optimized baseline by a factor of two. By selectively disabling some of the optimizations in the compiler, we derive a clinical and precise way of obtaining insight into their individual performance contributions.

Abstract:Manual engineering of high-performance implementations typically consumes many resources and requires in-depth knowledge of the hardware. Compilers try to address these problems; however, they are limited by design in what they can do. To address this, we present CryptOpt, an automatic optimizer for long stretches of straightline code. Experimental results across eight hardware platforms show that CryptOpt achieves a speed-up factor of up to 2.56 over current off-the-shelf compilers.

Abstract:Creating high performance implementations of deep learning primitives on CPUs is a challenging task. Multiple considerations including multi-level cache hierarchy, and wide SIMD units of CPU platforms influence the choice of program transformations to apply for performance optimization. In this paper, we present machine learning powered compiler techniques to optimize loop nests. We take a two-pronged approach to code optimization: We first apply high level optimizations to optimize the code to take optimal advantage of the cache memories. Then, we perform low level, target-specific optimizations to effectively vectorize the code to run well on the SIMD units of the machine. For high level optimizations, we use polyhedral compilation techniques and deep learning approaches. For low level optimization, we use a target specific code generator that generates code using vector intrinsics and Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques to find the optimal parameters for the code generator. We perform experimental evaluation of the developed techniques on various matrix multiplications that occur in popular deep learning workloads. The experimental results show that the compiler techniques presented in the paper achieve 7.6X and 8.2X speed-ups over a baseline for sequential and parallel runs respectively.

Abstract:Compilation optimization is critical for software performance. Before a product releases, the most effective algorithm combination should be chosen to minimize the object file size or to maximize the running speed. Compilers like GCC usually have hundreds of optimization algorithms, in which they have complex relationships. Different combinations of algorithms will lead to object files with different performance. Usually developers select the combination manually, but it's unpractical since a combination for one project can't be reused for another one. In order to conquer this difficulty some approaches like iterative search, heuristic search and machine learning based optimization have been proposed. However these methods still need improvements at different aspects like speed and precision. This paper researches machine learning based compilation optimization especially on feature processing which is important for machine learning methods. Program features can be divided into static features and dynamic features. Apart from user defined static features, we design a method to generate lots of static features by template and select best ones from them. Furthermore, we observe that feature value changes during different optimization phases and implement a feature extractor to extract feature values at specific phases and predict optimization plan dynamically. Finally, we implement the prototype on GCC version 4.6 with GCC plug in system and evaluate it with benchmarks. The results show that our system has a 5% average speed up for object file running speed than GCC O3 optimization level.

Abstract:Compilers come with a multitude of optimizations to choose from, and the chosen optimizations significantly affect the performance of the code being optimized. Selecting the optimal set of optimizations to apply and determining the order to run them is non-trivial. All of these optimizations closely interact with each other, and an optimization’s ability to improve the code heavily depends on how the previous optimizations modified it. The current approach to solve this is to use a one-size-fits-all optimization sequence, that is designed to perform reasonably well for any given source code. In other words, they are not designed to optimize depending on the nature of the code, which usually results in sub-optimal performance. In this paper, we present preliminary work tackling the problem from the perspective of compile-time by adapting the optimization sequence to cater to different program types. We start by analyzing how the source code interacts with the passes, as well as how the passes interact with each other. We use this information and propose two potential methods driven by machine learning to run customized optimization sequences on the source code. First, we look at how we can use a neural network to predict and skip passes that do not optimize the code to improve compilation time. Second, we look at how we can use clustering and predictive models to select custom pass pipelines. We believe that our approach has the potential to replace the current one-size-fits-all approach, with better optimization sequences that are tailored to perform better depending on the code. At the same time, it will allow testing the potential pipelines thoroughly, a practical requirement to gain confidence in the correctness of the compiler.

Abstract:AI and other emerging applications demand domain-specific architectures which require compiler techniques such as back-end generation for different architectures and optimizations. However, traditional undergraduate compiler courses emphasize the front-end, while code generation and optimization are rarely involved. To motivate universities to have more industry-friendly compiler courses, we have designed a national compiler design competition for undergraduates to include compiler techniques beyond parsing. Moreover, we provided reliable, continuous cloud storage and an online evaluation platform for distributed competitors. In the 9-week Competition in 2020, each team (up to 4 students) was required to implement a compiler for a given SysY language and given target hardware (Raspberry Pi 4B). The performance was evaluated by executing code generated by the compiler on real hardware. Finally,21 of 72 teams successfully passed all functional test cases; 12 of 21 teams implemented optimizations showing significant speedup over gcc -O0; furthermore, compilers of the top 3 teams performed better than gcc -O2 on the given 10 performance test cases. Some advanced optimization techniques, such as multithreading and SIMD, were used by some teams. This paper summarizes the competition and further thoughts on compiler courses.
CompilerDream: Learning a Compiler World Model for General Code Optimization

Abstract:Effective code optimization in compilers is crucial for computer and software engineering. The success of these optimizations primarily depends on the selection and ordering of the optimization passes applied to the code. While most compilers rely on a fixed sequence of optimization passes, current methods to find the optimal sequence either employ impractically slow search algorithms or learning methods that struggle to generalize to code unseen during training. We introduce CompilerDream, a model-based reinforcement learning approach to general code optimization. CompilerDream comprises a compiler world model that accurately simulates the intrinsic properties of optimization passes and an agent trained on this model to produce effective optimization strategies. By training on a large-scale program dataset, CompilerDream is equipped to serve as a general code optimizer across various application scenarios and source-code languages. Our extensive experiments first highlight CompilerDream's strong optimization capabilities for autotuning, where it leads the CompilerGym leaderboard. More importantly, the zero-shot generalization ability of large-scale trained compiler world model and agent, excels across diverse datasets, surpassing LLVM's built-in optimizations and other state-of-the-art methods in both settings of value prediction and end-to-end code optimization.

Automatic Compiler-Based Data Structure Generation

Abstract:Optimizing compilers are mainly equipped to optimize control flow. The optimization of data structures is left to the programmer and it is the programmer's responsibility to design the data structures to suit the target hardware. Very specific data structures are required to exploit certain hardware features, such as cache line size, address alignment, vector width, and memory hierarchy specifics. Because optimizing compilers do not target data structures, these features are explicitly encoded in program specifications. This leads to convoluted programs that obscure the essence of the computation from the compiler, in turn causing compiler analysis techniques to break down and hampering compiler optimizations from being applied. To solve this problem, we propose to move towards the specification of programs without explicitly specifying the data structure. The compiler will automatically generate actual data structures and executable code starting from this specification. In this paper, we introduce a compiler-based framework to support this automatic generation of data structures, allowing the compiler to go beyond the optimization of solely control flow and also target the way data is organized and accessed. As a case study of the effectiveness of this framework, we present a detailed description and experimental results of the application of the proposed techniques to automatically generate data structures for sparse matrix computations. We show that this way sparse data structures can be generated that were up till now only specified by hand and that automatically instantiated routines and corresponding data structures can be found that outperform implementations of three existing sparse algebra libraries.

Abstract:Static compiler optimizations can hardly cope with the complex run-time behavior and hardware components interplay of modern processor architectures. Multiple architectural phenomena occur and interact simultaneously, which requires the optimizer to combine multiple program transformations. Whether these transformations are selected through static analysis and models, runtime feedback, or both, the underlying infrastructure must have the ability to perform long and complex compositions of program transformations in a flexible manner. Existing compilers are ill-equipped to perform that task because of rigid phase ordering, fragile selection rules using pattern matching, and cumbersome expression of loop transformations on syntax trees. Moreover, iterative optimization emerges as a pragmatic and general means to select an optimization strategy via machine learning and operations research. Searching for the composition of dozens of complex, dependent, parameterized transformations is a challenge for iterative approaches.The purpose of this article is threefold: (1) to facilitate the automatic search for compositions of program transformations, introducing a richer framework which improves on classical polyhedral representations, suitable for iterative optimization on a simpler, structured search space, (2) to illustrate, using several examples, that syntactic code representations close to the operational semantics hamper the composition of transformations, and (3) that complex compositions of transformations can be necessary to achieve significant performance benefits. The proposed framework relies on a unified polyhedral representation of loops and statements. The key is to clearly separate four types of actions associated with program transformations: iteration domain, schedule, data layout and memory access functions modifications. The framework is implemented within the Open64/ORC compiler, aiming for native IA64, AMD64 and IA32 code generation, along with source-to-source optimization of Fortran90, C and C++.
A General Pattern-Based Dynamic Compilation Framework for Coarse-Grained Reconfigurable Architectures.

Abstract:Compilation has become a major challenge to the usability of coarse-grained reconfigurable architectures as increasing programmable resources must be orchestrated. Static compilation is insufficient for prohibitive time cost while dynamic compilation still performs poorly in both generality and efficiency. This paper proposes a general pattern-based dynamic compilation framework, which utilizes statically-generated patterns to straightforwardly determine runtime re-placement and routing so that runtime configuration creation algorithm has low complexity. Domain-specific communication characteristics are harnessed to help improve the efficiency of patterns. The experimental results show that compiled general applications can be transformed onto arbitrary resources at runtime, reserving 97% (39%~163%) of the original performance/resource on average, 7% (0~17%) better than the state-of-the-art non-general methods.

Abstract:With widening vectors and the proliferation of advanced vector instructions in today’s processors, vectorization plays an ever-increasing role in delivering application performance. Achieving the performance potential of this vector hardware has required significant support from the software level such as new explicit vector programming models and advanced vectorizing compilers. Today, with the combination of these software tools plus new SIMD ISA extensions like gather/scatter instructions it is not uncommon to find that even codes with complex and irregular data access patterns can be vectorized. In this paper we focus on these vectorized codes with irregular accesses, and show that while the best-in-class Intel Compiler Vectorizer does indeed provide speedup through efficient vectorization, there are some opportunities where clever program transformations can increase performance further. After identifying these opportunities, this paper describes two automatic compiler optimizations to target these data access patterns. The first optimization focuses on improving the performance for a group of adjacent gathers/scatters. The second optimization improves performance for a group of stencil vector accesses using more efficient SIMD instructions. Both optimizations are now implemented in the 17.0 version of the Intel Compiler. We evaluate the optimizations using an extensive set of micro-kernels, representative benchmarks and application kernels. Abstract:Aiming at the problems of high overhead and too long time in web pages loading the JavaScript engine has in just-in-time com-pilation mode,in this paper we improve the compiling way of just-in-time compilation mode in JavaScript engine,design a dynamic compila-tion way for JavaScript code,which only compiles instantaneously the hot area frequently executed in JavaScript code,while the rest of the JavaScript codes are running in interpretation mode,thus the just-in-time compilation is properly used.Finally the experimental result shows that the dynamic compilation way can reduce the overhead of the JavaScript engine,and decreases the web pages loading time.

Abstract:The efficiency and space complexity of program are very important for embedded software. Therefore, it is great reference value to analyze the execution time and calling times of code for optimizing embedded code. Code instrumentation is the key technology of monitoring program performance. Static instrumentation on the executable file is a method and strategy that can achieve the dynamic analysis program performance. The tool can analyze the execution time and calling times of user function and the embedded library function. Through analysis and comparison, this method is faster and more accurately than the existing statistical tools. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:Graphics processing units(GPUs) provide a low cost platform for accelerating high performance computations. New programming languages, such as CUDA and OpenCL, make GPU programming attractive to programmers. However, programming GPUs is still a cumbersome task for two reasons, tedious performance optimizations and lack of portability. First, optimizing an algorithm for a specific GPU is a time-consuming task that requires a thorough understanding of both the algorithm and the underlying hardware. Unoptimized CUDA programs typically only achieve a small fraction of the peak GPU performance. Second, CUDA programs lack performance portability between different GPUs. Moving code from one GPU to another while maintaining the desired performance is a non-trivial task which often requires significant time. In this paper, we propose an optimized compiler that compiles a representative high level directive-based language to CUDA, which is capable of performing a wide variety of optimizations to generate efficient code for GPUs. We alleviate the portability problem of current GPU programming methods by using a high level directive-based language that provides a unified abstraction for currently popular CPU-GPU heterogeneous systems. Various optimizations, mainly the memory system optimizations, are automatically applied by our compiler to produce optimized CUDA code for GPU. Experiments on rodinia benchmark with different input sizes shows that our compiler achieves 70%, 75%, 84% performance of hand-written code on average respectively.

Abstract:The recent transition in the software industry toward dynamically generated code poses a new challenge to existing dynamic binary translation (DBT) systems. A significant re-translation overhead could be introduced due to the maintenance of the consistency between the dynamically-generated guest code and the corresponding translated host code. To address this issue, this paper presents a novel approach to optimize DBT systems for guest applications with dynamically-generated code. The proposed approach can maximize the reuse of previously translated host code to mitigate the re-translation overhead. A prototype based on such an approach has been implemented on an existing DBT system HQEMU. Experimental results on a set of JavaScript applications show that it can achieve a 1.24X performance speedup on average compared to the original HQEMU.
