Abstract:The electronic structure of the clusters containing oxygen, the stacking fault and the complex in the transition metal Ni are calculated by the multiple-scattering X alpha method. Energy levels, density of states and transfer of charge are obtained. Based on the calculation and analysis, the influences of impurity oxygen and structure defect on the electronic structure of the clusters are discussed, and it is found that the local Ni-O cluster with the interstitial oxygen is a stable atomic configuration.

Abstract:The atomic structures and electronic properties of small Ti-N (N=2-10) clusters have been studied by using the density-functional theory with a local spin density approximation. We find that the inner-shells (3s3p) of the titanium atom plays an important role in the formation of the small clusters. We have obtained the ground state of titanium clusters, Ti-7 is found to be a magic cluster, which is in good agreement with the experimental results. Starting with Ti-8 cluster some features of the electronic structure of the titanium bulk have been developed. The ionization potentials and magnetic moments for these small titanium clusters are also presented. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021- 9606(00)30544-X].

Abstract:In this work,the geometric structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of various neutral and positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters([Agm]n+,m=2-8,n=0-2),have been investigated using densi-ty functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory.The simulation results demonstrate that the elec-tronic energy level structures and absorption spectra of the ultrasmall size silver clusters are influenced by multiple factors,including size,symmetry,open-shell and closed-shell systems,and electric charges of clusters.Further-more,average binding energy calculations indicate that an increase in the size of neutral ultrasmall size silver clus-ters results in a gradual enhancement in their stability.However,positively charged ultrasmall size silver clusters are subject to the parity oscillations phenomenon,which means that the dominant configuration in the anionic polyhedral network is not necessarily the lowest-energy configuration.This study has led to the construction of a database of the geometrical structures,electronic structures,and absorption spectra of ultrasmall size silver clusters.This dataset has been created to identify the characteristic luminescence of ultrasmall size silver clusters in specific configurations in fluorescent glasses.Furthermore,the database will provide theoretical support data for expanding the structural and spectroscopic studies of ultrasmall size silver clusters in other types of inorganic as well as organic ligands.
Electronic Structures of Nickel Metal with Hydrogen Impurity

Abstract:By using a first-principles numerical method, the electronic structures of face-centered cubic Ni doped with H, H+ and H- are investigated. In two adopted cluster models, H occupies the centers of octahedron and tetrahedron as interstitial. It was found that the former is preferentially occupied. The constructed NI-H, Ni-H+ and NI-H- bonds are only slightly different due to electron flowing. The residual (doping H-) or insufficient (doping H+) electrons are basically absorbed or supplied by the further matrix atoms. The additions induce a strong reduction of the interactions between their first neighbor atoms, but a weaker alteration of those between their first and second neighbors, which is the expression of hydrogen local effect and can be regarded as an explanation of hydrogen embrittlement.

Abstract:NiOx, long studied for its use in nickel-based secondary batteries, has been the subject of much recent interest due to its efficacy as an oxygen evolution catalyst. Despite extensive study over more than a century, however, many outstanding questions remain surrounding both the structure and the activity of NiOx. Further compounding this ambiguity is the recent finding that much of the previous experimental work on NiOx may have been influenced by incidental doping. Here, we report a computational study of the two simplest members of the NiOx family: beta-Ni(OH)(2) and beta-NiOOH. Using DFT+U calculations, we first identify a beta-NiOOH structure with a staggered arrangement of intercalated protons that is more consistent with experimental crystal structures of beta-NiOOH than previously proposed geometries. Next, by conducting a thorough study of various initial spin configurations of this beta-NiOOH structure, we found that a low-spin d(7) Ni3+ configuration is always favored, which suggests a Jahn-Teller distortion, rather than disproportionation, explains the different Ni-O bond distances found in experiment. G(0)W(0) calculations performed on beta-Ni(OH)(2) and beta-NiOOH reveal electronic structures consistent with previous experimental results. Lastly, calculations of various low-index surface energies of both beta-Ni(OH)(2) and beta-NiOOH demonstrate that the (001) surface is the most thermodynamically stable surface, in keeping with numerous experimental results but in contrast to recent computational models.

Abstract:The nature of the Ni-O bond is relevant to catalytic and environmental applications. The vibrational frequency and electronic structure of NiO were calculated using CASSCF, icMRCI+Q, CCSD(T), and DFT. CASSCF predicted a quintet state (5Σ-) ground state for the equilibrium bond distance with a state crossing at 1.65 Å, where the triplet (3Σ-) state becomes of lower energy. These states arise from the 3d8(3F)4s2 (3F) and 3d9(2D)4s1 (3D) configurations of Ni. The icMRCI+Q method predicts a triplet (3Σ-) ground state and does not predict a state crossing with the quintet. This state has significant ionic character with the 2pz of O bonding with the 4s/3dz2 of the Ni to form a σ bond. The NiO frequency at the icMRCI+Q level of 835.0 cm-1 is in excellent agreement with experiment; the value of re is 1.5992 Å at this computational level. CCSD(T) predicts ωe = 888.80 cm-1 when extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. Frequencies predicted using CCSD(T) deviate from experiment consistent with the calculations showing large multireference character. A wide array of density functionals were benchmarked. Of the 43 functionals tested, the ones that gave the best prediction of the frequency are ωB97XD, CAM-B3LYP, and τ-HCTH with respective values of 831.8, 838.3, and 837.4 cm-1 respectively. The bond dissociation energy (BDE) of NiO is predicted to be 352.4 kJ/mol at the Feller-Peterson-Dixon (FPD) level in good agreement with one of the experimental values. The calculated BDEs at the DFT level are sensitive to the choice of functional and atomic asymptote. Sixteen functionals predicted the BDE within 20 kJ/mol of the FPD value.

Abstract:In this article the LDA + U-SIC and LDA + U-DFT methods are used to calculate the electronic properties of highly correlated compound NiO. It is found that the top of the occupied states consists of mainly Ni 3d states with t(2g) symmetry in the minor spin direction in LDA + U-SIC calculation. The. occupied weight of e(g) component is located below 8.0 eV relative to the valence-band edge and is also separated from the rest of the occupied valence-band by a small band gap. All these findings are in good agreement with existing GW and SIC calculations for NiO. This study on NiO yields also an orbital ordering description for Ni 3d states and as a further result, leads to the conclusion that the orbital polarization and non-sphericity of potential within atomic spheres have essential impacts on the electronic states in antiferromagnetic(AFM) NiO. Meanwhile, the corresponding LDA + U-DFT calculation yields a similar description with LMTO-ASA study especially on the top of valence in NiO. The result suggests that the orbital polarization and the hybridization between 0 2p and Ni 3d have essential impacts in describing the essential electronic properties of AFM NiO.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to study Cu2Ox (x = 1 - 4) clusters in their neutral, anionic and cationic states. The ground state structures are obtained and found to exhibit linear or near linear structures, which are different from the two- or three-dimensional ones suggested by the previous theoretical calculations. The calculated electron affinities of the clusters are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The low-lying excited states for the clusters are calculated using time-dependent DFT and used to assign the features in the photoelectron spectra. Our results compare well with the available experimental data.

The existence of a trigonal distortion about the impurity site is verified by the binding-energy calculation. The electronic-structure calculation shows that two optical absorption bands with zero-phonon lines at 1.40 and 3.1 eV and a broad absorption band centered near 1.4 eV, observed in synthetic diamond, are associated with the single interstitial ${\mathrm{Ni}}^{+}$ impurity. The calculated results of the spin-orbit splitting of the ground state and the energy positions as well as polarization properties of the optical transitions are in good agreement with the experimental ones. An optical transition of about 2.5 eV is predicted, which reveals a different polarization property compared with the observed 2.51-eV absorption band and 2.56-eV luminescence band.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the addition of a carbon impurity leads to significant changes in the thermodynamic properties of a Ni147 cluster. The magnitude of the change induced is dependent on the parameters of the Ni-C interaction. Hence, thermodynamic properties of Ni clusters can be effectively tuned by the addition of a particular type of impurity. We also show that the presence of a carbon impurity considerably changes the mobility and diffusion of atoms in the Ni cluster at temperatures close to its melting point. The calculated diffusion coefficients of the carbon impurity in the Ni cluster can be used as a reliable estimate of the growth rate of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:An ab initio study has been performed to investigate the influence of the surrounding point charges on the calculated electronic properties of the embedded NiO cluster. The employment of the nominal charges ±2.0 would cause overestimation of the crystal potential even for the so-called ionic oxide NiO. Several criteria, namely, the charge, potential, dipole moment and charge density consistence for determining the magnitude of point charges self-consistently have been proposed and examined. When the embedding point charges are spherically expanded, giving the embedding point charges a continuous distribution of charge density, a good agreement is reached between the calculated properties of the embedded cluster model and those of the bulk solid after charge density consistence is fulfilled.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate impurity effects on the changes of packing structures, atomic level pressure, and thermodynamics for icosahedral Ag clusters having 55 and 147 atoms. The simulation results indicate that, doping Cu atoms in different cluster shells can significantly affect their thermal stability and thermodynamic values. For the small size clusters, the doping in the interior apparently releases the stress, and improves the stability. The thermodynamic values of entropy and free energy can be used to indicate the order degree of the packing structures and structural transition. The shape changes are related to the local stresses at elevated temperatures.
Comparison of density functionals for nitrogen impurities in ZnO

Abstract:Hybrid functionals and empirical correction schemes are compared to conventional semi-local density functional theory (DFT) calculations in order to assess the predictive power of these methods concerning the formation energy and the charge transfer level of impurities in the wide-gap semiconductor ZnO. While the generalized gradient approximation fails to describe the electronic structure of the N impurity in ZnO correctly, methods that widen the band gap of ZnO by introducing additional non-local potentials yield the formation energy and charge transfer level of the impurity in reasonable agreement with hybrid functional calculations. Summarizing the results obtained with different methods, we corroborate earlier findings that the formation of substitutional N impurities at the oxygen site in ZnO from N atoms is most likely slightly endothermic under oxygen-rich preparation conditions, and introduces a deep level more than 1eV above the valence band edge of ZnO. Moreover, the comparison of methods elucidates subtle differences in the predicted electronic structure, e.g. concerning the orientation of unoccupied orbitals in the crystal field and the stability of the charged triplet state of the N impurity. Further experimental or theoretical analysis of these features could provide useful tests for validating the performance of DFT methods in their application to defects in wide-gap materials.

Abstract:Due to challenges in preparing pure metal clusters and in controlling reactions, the oxides produced by metal clusters reacting with oxygen are often different from traditional ion-molecule products in the gas phase and their reactivity pattern is also largely unveiled yet. In this work, utilizing a customized Re-TOFMS having a home-made cluster source and a flow tube reactor, we have observed the gaseous reactions of Nin± clusters with oxygen and found magic clusters of Ni13O8± that dominate the mass distributions. By quantum chemistry calculations, we find that both Ni13O8− and Ni13O8+ clusters bear a regular cubic structure with 8 oxygen anchoring the eight angles, however, they have rather different spin accommodations. The Ni13O8− clusters have 15 unpaired spin-up electrons exhibiting cubic aromaticity and decent ferromagnetism, while the Ni13O8+ clusters take a lower-spin ground state (11 unpaired electrons), with spin-down population on the central Ni atom pertaining to ferrimagnetism. This is a class of metalloxocube clusters that hold properties of aromaticity and ferromagnetism/ferrimagnetism charcterized by a few spin electrons, which embodies the bonding nature of superatomic compounds and enables to develop cluster-genetic materials of multi-functionality.

Abstract:A systematic study on the ground state electronic structure and magnetic properties of Nin (n=2–39 and 55) clusters are performed using the density functional calculation with the local spin-density approximation. The binding energy per atom increases monotonically. The occupation numbers do not change significantly for n>8, which helps us to understand the experimental observation of the photoelectron spectroscopy. The obtained average magnetic moment per atom is larger than the bulk value, and the evolvement of these moments towards the bulk is in good agreement with the experimental trend. However, the average moments of “core” atoms are comparable to or even larger than that of surface atoms, which indicates that the usual conclusion of surface enhancement on magnetism in transition metal clusters may be improper for these Nin (n=14–39) clusters.

Abstract: We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to the Ni 2$p$ and O 1$s$ XPS spectra, there is strong covalence between Ni $3d$ and O $2p$ in the reference samples NiO and NdNiO$_3$, due to the positive and negative charge transfer in NiO and NdNiO$_3$, respectively. In contrast, the Ni $3d$ and O $2p$ hybridization is significantly suppressed, indicating the Hubbard-like Mott insulator in the NdNiO$_2$. The three-peak structure in Nd 3$d$ core-level XPS implies the strong mixing state between 4$f^3$ and 4$f^4\underline{L}$ in NdNiO$_2$, giving rise to a heavy-fermion like system. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak position determines the antiferromagnetic exchange $J=25$~meV. Our experimental results agree very well with our previous theoretical results.

Abstract:The Fenske-Hall molecular orbital calculations were performed on the model cluster Cu O-3(12)17-. The calculated results revealed that the valence levels are mainly composed of Cu d and O p components, and the levels near E-j are predominately of 0 p nature. Oxidation removes the antibonding electrons from the Cu(1) (sic) MO and strengthens the chain Cu(1)-O(1) and Cu(1)-O(4) bands an that they have slightly larger overlap population than the plane Cu(2)-O(2) and Cu(2)-O(3) bonds, The oxidation beyond the Cu2+ state does not lead to Cu3+ but to O- state so that the O(1) as well as O(4) ions have slightly smaller electron charge than the O(2) and O(3) ions. The holes introduced by doping reside primarily. the Cu-O chain with dominantly sigma O(4) 2p, character.

Abstract:The structure and stability of clusters Ag(n)O+(m), Ag(n)O(m), and Ag(n)O(m)- (n = 1-6, m = 1-2) are studied by using the first-principles method. Calculated results show that the properties studied are strongly dependent on the size and charge state of the clusters, some of which show the odd-even alteration. Generally, the oxidation drives the transition of silver clusters from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) structures. It is found that the structure with dissociated O2 is more stable if the silver cluster can provide oxygen with enough electrons.
Oxygen Deficiencies in Titanium Oxide Clusters as Models for Bulk Defects

Abstract:TD-DFT calculations were performed on neutral TinO2n, TinO2n-1, and TinO2n-2 clusters, where n ≤ 7. Calculations show the TinO2n clusters are closed shell systems containing empty d orbitals and that the partially filled d orbitals of the suboxide clusters have a profound effect on their structural, electronic, and topological properties. The low energy photoexcitations of TinO2n clusters are all O-2p to Ti-3d transitions, while the open-shell suboxide clusters are all characterized by d-d transitions that occur at a much smaller optical gap. Upon low energy photoabsorption, the localization of the hole is accompanied by a local bond elongation, i.e., polaron formation, whereas d-electrons are generally delocalized around the cluster. The properties of the clusters, including the oxygen binding energies and structures, were calculated to account for the variation in relative populations found in experimental cluster distributions. Several TinO2n-2 clusters contain higher symmetry which is reflected in their relative stability. In particular, the tetrahedral symmetry of Ti4O6 inhibits charge carrier localization and therefore exhibits higher stability.
