Abstract:The fiber acousto optic filter is fabricated successfully for the first time in China. The mode conversion is realized by the acoustic wave induced perturbation. Excess loss of 0.1 dB and continuous tuning range between 1470 nm and 1580 nm are obtained. The polarization dependence of the filter is studied experimentally.

Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber structured programmable optical bandpass filter (waveshaper) based on a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating and a digital-controlled thermal array. The key parameters of this filter such as the number of transmission channels, passing bandwidth per channel, central wavelength as well as the channel spacing can be reconfigured independently and flexibly by a program-controlled circuit. We have achieved in experiments the tunable passing bandwidth ranging from < 0.04 to 1.55 nm, adjustable central wavelength ranging from 1,547.16 to 1,558.64 nm, and a minimum wavelength spacing of 0.91 nm. The insertion loss of the whole device and the sideband rejection ratio are about 1.76 and 28 dB, respectively.
Tunable and configurable photonic microwave bandpass filter implemented in a radio-over-fiber link

Abstract:A tunable and configurable photonic microwave bandpass filter with negative coefficient is proposed and demonstrated. Based on all-optical mixing in an intensity modulator and a phase modulator, the filter frequency response is related with the frequency of local RF signal (LO) signal and dc bias applied to the intensity modulator. The free spectral range of filter passband can be tuned conveniently by changing the LO frequency. When 8GHz LO signal is applied, an equivalent bandpass filter with null-to-null bandwidth of 8.1 GHz is obtained for a 25km radio-over-fiber link. Meanwhile, by varying the dc bias, the weights and the number of taps can be adjusted to tune the performance of filter. Therefore, a flexible transversal bandpass filter implemented in a radio-over-fiber link is realized along with the tunability and reconfiguration. Copyright 2006 IEICE.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable high finesse microfilter is described, which is based on microfiber loop resonator (MLR). The length of microfiber loop could be controlled by a small cylindrical piezoelectric ceramic. As we calculated, this resonator has the maximum Q factor of 2400 and the finesse of 4.3. MLR filter was demonstrated that the maximum extinction ratio is about 10dB, and the free spectral range variation range could be more than 100GHz. This device could also be integrated into a smaller size due to the bigger radius of curvature of the microfiber.

Abstract:We propose a novel miniaturized optical attenuator based on the evanescent-field coupling between two nanofibers. Benefiting from a wavelength-dependent waveguiding property of the coupled structure, a tunable attenuation with maximum extinction ratio of ~ 20 dB is demonstrated with an ultrawide optical bandwidth up to 0.7 μm in experiment. The wavelength-depended waveguiding properties of both one single nanofiber and coupled nanofibers are investigated in both theory and simulation. Using an adiabatic coupling structure, an attenuation range from − 0.16 dB to − 18.46 dB is obtained within a spectrum from 1.2 μm to 1.7 μm experimentally. Moreover, the simulated results indicate that, the attenuation only shows a slight change of ~ 0.1 dB with a lateral misalignment of 0.5 μm between the two nanofibers, indicating a high tolerance of this attenuator to the lateral misalignment. Considering the wide bandwidth as well as the ultracompact structure, this attenuator shows high potential in applications such as all-fiber optical sensing and communicating.

Abstract:We report our experimental results on a V-coupled cavity semiconductor tunable laser integrated with a Fabry-Perot tunable filter. Wavelength tuning of 43 channels with 100GHz spacing is demonstrated with side mode suppression ratio around 40dB.

Abstract:A dynamically tunable fiber filter realizing complex spectra of phase-shifted long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The principle of the filter is based on two acousto-optic coupling processes occurring simultaneously. The first coupling process acts as a normal LPFG, while the second makes the coupling direction of the first process change continuously, leading to a similar transmission spectrum with the phase-shifted LPFGs, in which the changing of coupling direction is realized by the discrete phase shifts of the index modulation. By adjusting the acoustic drive signals, its transmission spectrum can be dynamically tuned to realize the phase-shifted LPFGs' spectra under different phase shift numbers and locations.

Abstract:The high frequency ultrasonic wave transmitting along UV-induced fiber Bragg grating, produces a long periodic ultrasonic grating to modulate the fiber Bragg grating, which is called as ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating. The acoustic-optic characteristics of the ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating are analyzed by using mode coupling theory. It is found that there are many individual peaks with same interval in the reflective spectra of ultrasonic superstructure fiber grating, and the interval of reflective peaks depends on the ultrasonic frequency. It is therefore possible to tune the reflective wavelength of first-order peak in the reflective spectra through changing ultrasonic frequency, so as to realize fast-tunable acoustic-optic filter with wide tunable range. Compared with conventional tunable acoustic-optic filters the present filter offers more narrow bandwidth and faster tuning speed.

Abstract:Integrated optical tunable filters are key components for a wide spectrum of applications, including optical communications and interconnects, spectral analysis, and tunable light sources, among others. Compared with their thermo-optic counterparts, integrated acousto-optic (AO) tunable filters provide a unique approach to achieve superior performance, including ultrawide continuous tuning ranges of hundreds of nm, low power consumption of sub-mW and fast tuning speed of sub-mu s. Based on suspended one-dimensional (1D) AO waveguides in the collinear configuration, we propose and theoretically investigate an innovative family of integrated AO tunable filters (AOTFs) on thin-film lithium niobate. The AO waveguides perform as tunable wavelength-selective narrow-band polarization rotators, where highly efficient conversion between co-propagating TE0 and TM0 modes is enabled by the torsional acoustic A1 mode, which can be selectively excited by a novel antisymmetric wavefront interdigital transducer. Furthermore, we systematically and quantitatively explore the possibilities of exciting modulated acousticwaves, which contain multiple frequency components, along the AOwaveguide to achieve independently reconfigurable multi-band operations, with tunable time-variant spectral shapes. By incorporating a complete set of ultrawide-band polarization-handling components, we have proposed and theoretically investigated several representative monolithic AOTF configurations, featuring different arrangements of single or cascaded identical AO waveguides. One of the present AOTF designs exhibits a theoretical linewidth of similar to 8 nm (similar to 4 nm), a sidelobe suppression ratio of similar to 75 dB, and theoretically no excess loss at the center wavelength of 1550 nm (1310 nm), with an ultrawide tuning range of 1.25-1.65 mu m (from O-band to L-band), a fast tuning speed of 0.14 mu s, and a low power consumption of a few mW. All-fiber broadband spectral acousto-optic modulation of a tubular-lattice hollow-core optical fiber

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband acousto-optic notch filter based on a tubular-lattice hollow-core fiber for the first time. The guided optical modes are modulated by acoustically induced dynamic long-period gratings along the fiber. The device is fabricated employing a short interaction length (7.7 cm) and low drive voltages (10 V). Modulated spectral bands with 20 nm half-width and maximum depths greater than 60 % are achieved. The resonant notch wavelength is tuned from 743 to 1355 nm (612 nm span) by changing the frequency of the electrical signal. The results indicate a broader tuning range compared to previous studies using standard and hollow-core fibers. It further reveals unique properties for reconfigurable spectral filters and fiber lasers, pointing to the fast switching and highly efficient modulation of all-fiber photonic devices.

Abstract:A novel method of simultaneous realization of optical carrier-suppression and single-sideband modulation using fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter is presented. In order to enhance transmission performance of radio over fiber links, we use a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter to filter out one sideband as well as suppress the optical carrier power. The results demonstrate 20.5dB and 14.2dB improvement in the signal noise ratios when 18GHz and 10GHz microwave signals carrying 5Mbit/s quadrature-phase-shift-keyed (QPSK) format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber, respectively.

Abstract:Reported is a novel and compact tunable fibre-optic comb filter with the tuning implemented based on two electro-optic phase retarders made of lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate. Both the central wavelength and the channel isolation can be tuned at a sub-microsecond speed. A prototype filter with insertion loss of around -1.3 dB and channel isolation up to 26 dB is achieved.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on a spectral-subtraction-induced microwave photonic filter (MPF), which is implemented by a subtraction operation of transmission responses between two high-pass filters of different cutoff frequency. By changing the bandwidth of a tunable optical filter or the wavelengths of two laser sources, the central frequency of the synthesized single-pass MPF is shifted and the oscillation frequency of OEO can be tuned. In the experiment, frequency-tunable oscillation signals from 7.8 to 14.2 GHz at a step of ~ 1.25 GHz are generated and its performance is investigated.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-narrow-band optical filter based on a hybrid-microsphere consisting of a coated SiO2 microsphere. As compared to the SiO2 microsphere, the hybrid-microsphere produces a quality factor of >10(8), a transmission spectrum bandwidth of <1 pm, and an increased side-mode suppression ratio. The microsphere surface roughness and whispering gallery mode (WGM) transmission spectra are measured experimentally. A 0.01 nm bandwidth, single-wavelength fiber laser output is achieved with a tunable wavelength, using the SiO2 microsphere as the mode selector. The optical field distribution and WGM transmission spectrum of the hybrid-microsphere with different coating parameters are theoretically investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method.

Abstract:Acoustooptic tunable filters (AOTF) based on MC (matched cladding), DS (dispersion shifted) and DC (dispersion compensation) fiber were studied. It is found that the fiber with large waveguide dispersion is a promising candidate to reduce the bandwidth of AOTF. In order to describe the relations between the fiber dispersion and the filters bandwidth, a dispersion parameter N is defined and its relation to the tuning rate of the fiber AOTF is derived. This allows one to estimate the dispersion properties of a fiber by using the more easily measurable parameter of tuning rate. Experimentally, as narrow as 0.55 nm of FWHM bandwidth was demonstrated on commercially available DC fiber.

Abstract:Optical filters are essential parts of advanced optical communication and sensing systems. Among them, the ones with an ultrawide free spectral range (FSR) are especially critical. They are promising to provide access to numerous wavelength channels highly desired for large-capacity optical transmission and multipoint multiparameter sensing. Present schemes for wide-FSR filters either suffer from limited cavity length or poor fabrication tolerance or impose an additional active-tuning control requirement. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a filter that features FSR-free operation capability, subnanometer optical bandwidth, and acceptable fabrication tolerance. Only one single deep dip within a record-large waveband ( S + C + L band) is observed by appropriately designing a side-coupled Bragg-grating-assisted Fabry–Perot filter, which has been applied as the basic sensing unit for both the refractive index and temperature measurement. Five such basic units are also cascaded in series to demonstrate a multichannel filter. This work provides a new insight to design FSR-free filters and opens up a possibility of flexible large-capacity integration using more wavelength channels, which will greatly advance integrated photonics in optical communication and sensing.
