Abstract:In this thesis,production problem,i.e.the relations between human being and nature,is considered the center of the social life at the Pre-axial Age.As a result,the condition of Sparse Population in a Small Country was inevitable in the social life at the age of Xia Dynasty and Yinshang Dynasty.Due to the gradual awareness of the scale of production,the increase of Surplus products brought about the arrival of Great-Power period.As there was a large population in Great-Powers,that social management,i.e.the management of relations between people,become a major task of the elite,was the essence of the cultural transformation of Chinese Culture the took place in Western Zhou Dynasty.The Axial Age of Chinese culture is from Western Zhou Dynasty to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period,in which period,the Duke of Chou and Confucius are two most important ideologists.Their exploration and discussion on how to establish and consolidate social order has laid the foundation for the basic pattern of Chinese culture.
Encounter Between Present Female Characters and Neolithic Inscribed Symbols Prior to Oracle-bone Inscriptions

Abstract:Inscribed symbols of Neolithic Age were sometimes suspected to be initial writing prior to developed writing system. The earliest developed writing system in China was Oracle-bone inscriptions (OBIs) of Bronze Age and researchers have long sought its predecessor. Here, we reported that two continuous symbols on a stone ax of Neolithic Liangzhu culture found their identical duplicates in a unique writing system on brocade belts woven by present women in Shanghai suburb. Women in this group duplicated the hereditary text for weddings only once each generation in the past, and they can still interpret these two characters, implying that the two identical Liangzhu symbols may have the similar meanings. The meanings and patterns are both similar to those in OBIs, suggesting that Liangzhu symbols might be one of the predecessors of OBIs. Integrating philology, genetics, linguistics, and folklore, we discussed that special small population may inherit both the genetic structure and convert culture for extremely long time, such as this population in southern Shanghai.
Changes with Chinese Characteristics: Rural Clan Culture, Clan Communities, and Kinship Relations During Urbanization

Abstract:This research examines urbanization and its impact on rural clan culture and clan communities, emphasizing normative changes with regard to clan sentiment, family values, filial piety, ancestor worship, decent relations, gender relations, marital relations, patriarchal power, and rituals, which have been long neglected by pioneer studies. As revealed, urbanization has weakened traditional influence among villagers especially the well-educated youths. But the impact is limited in scope and intensity. Migrant workers are still in their rural roots. The current urban development is not sufficient to completely separate them physically and mentally from native clan communities. Traditional culture remains not only in their memory but also in their daily life. China’s urbanization is distinguished from European model thanks to changed technological environment today. New technical conditions in transportation and information make the distance between migrant workers and their villages relatively shorter. Migrant workers’ spiritual communication with their family members, relatives, and local clans is not loosened. Their various links with home-villages do not cut off, but continue to be close and smooth. Urban effects move slowly on them. In the survey, a majority of the respondents expressed traditional viewpoints regarding ancestor worship, xiao (or filial piety), loyalty, clan rituals and clan genealogy, reflecting historical continuity of culture. Although villagers are shifting from the big jia to the small jia, and individualism is rising, jia, being the foundation of the Chinese society and Chinese culture, continues to be of more importance than individuals. Cultural changes bear strong Chinese characteristics.

Abstract:The transition of traditional culture in modern society is a classic research question in the social sciences. Based on the existing theoretical speculation about Chinese traditional culture, this paper analyzes traditional Chinese culture from three aspects: morality（people and people）, family view（people and family） and political view（people and country）, rendering three basic themes of “benevolence, ” “filial piety” and “loyalty” in traditional culture. Focusing on these three themes, this paper further demonstrates the basic pattern of transition of traditional culture in modern society based on the empirical facts accumulated by sociological studies: The idea of “benevolence” shifts gradually from the differential mode of interpersonal association to the balance between in-group members and out-group members; The idea of “filial piety” shifts from the dominant relationship of the seniors’ authority to the unity of authoritarian and affective relationship; The idea of “loyalty” gradually shifts from the culture as the central axis to the coexistence of cultural dependence and institutional evaluations.

Abstract:The conception of language as a multi-level system is widely accepted in modern linguistics. However, due to the absence of operational methodology, there has been no empirical characterization of any language as a multi-level system in the current body of linguistic research. The present study attempts to fill this gap by examining modern Chinese as a multi-level system from the complex network approach. Based on the same body of corpus data, four levels as language sub-systems along the meaning-form dimension of the language are modeled as linguistic networks. On the basis of topological analysis of the four linguistic networks, the organizational patterns of the four language sub-systems are described and compared quantitatively and the results are interpreted from an interdisciplinary perspective. To varying degrees, the four network models exhibit a series of non-trivial statistical patterns, which shed light on different aspects of the organization of the four sub-systems. The similarities and differences of the four sub-systems in organizational patterns reflect the relationships between them. In more than one way, the results of this study point to the close connection between relevant properties of the language and human cognition, which facilitates linguistic performance of different types.

Abstract:Abstract Using data collected from fieldwork in five administrative villages in southern Anhui, our research explores changes to clan culture in the course of modernization and urbanization. The research reveals that, although the visible component of the clan system has diminished, the invisible part, or clan culture, continues to exert a strong influence on villagers. More than half of the respondents in our survey expressed traditional viewpoints concerning issues of clan interests, ancestor worship, xiao (filial piety), clan rituals, and clan genealogy, thus reflecting historical continuity of traditions. Nevertheless, traditional influence is declining, especially among young and middle-aged villagers with urban work experience. Cultural changes in these villages bear strong Chinese characteristics. While the sentiment of patriarchal authority is receding among the young and middle-aged villagers, the general principle of xiao is still respected by all groups. Jia , being the foundation of Chinese society and Chinese culture, continues to be of more importance than individuals. (This article is in English.) 摘要采用在皖南5个行政村进行田野调查所收集的数据,本文探讨了在现代化和城镇化过程中宗族文化的变迁。研究结果表明,尽管宗族体系的显性结构已经消失,其内在的宗族文化依然对村民们发挥强烈的影响。调查中,在涉及宗族利益、祖先崇拜、孝道、族祭、以及修谱活动等问题上,超过半数受访者的回答带有强烈的传统色彩,体现了文化的历史延续性。虽然如此,传统的影响力在农民工尤其是中青年中,仍在不断减弱。在所调查的乡村,文化的变迁具有强烈的中国特色。一方面,中青年村民的宗族意识在不断淡化。另一方面,孝的道德准则依然得到了不同年龄阶层的尊崇,家庭的集体利益还是高于个人利益,个人主义依然为家庭所束缚。

Abstract:The researches on Shang civilization,such as its genesis,the reason why the people of Shang civilization named themselves “Shang”,whether the writing for Shang Character is helpful for the research into the civilization's genesis and its significance for the understanding of the civilization's characteristics.Based on the former methodologies and findings,the author attempts to advance a new approach—the triplex evidence,with which the author reaches the conclusion that the writing of Shang Character implicates Shang tribe had black-bird worship and its etymology can be traced back to the sculptured symbol of bird totem in the East.Furthermore,the brand new explanation for some totem symbols in the East are accomplished and the distinct interpretation of “Xin” Character and “Di” Character which have the same writing structure and close relationship in meaning with “Shang” character is achieved.

Abstract:The ritual system of China's Late Shang dynasty is commonly described as 'mature' in Mainland Chinese scholarship, meaning that the leading role of bronze vessels in ancestral rites is recognisably similar to the practices of later dynasties. Such an assumption depicts ritual artefacts—particularly those from mortuary contexts—from the Early and Middle Shang periods as precursors to the Late Shang ones in a predictable evolutionary framework. This paper examines changes in the use of ceramic and bronze across the Shang period, showing that ceramics—specifically proto-porcelain and hard pottery—played more of a key role in Early and Middle Shang ritual, though the types of vessels required were not yet strictly formalised. By contrast, the huge number of bronzes in the Late Shang corresponds to an apparent emphasis on quantity and conspicuous consumption in a ritual economy. This occurred despite the Late Shang's theoretical loss of territory in the west and south, which necessitated exchange networks with neighbouring polities, particularly those south of the Central Plains, be adapted.

Abstract:Chinese civilization has a long history, and the Central Plains, with Henan as the core, is one of its birthplaces. Understanding the psycho-linguistic changes in Henan is of great significance for understanding the evolution and formation of national cultural psychology. The traditional method is mainly qualitative or speculative, which makes the consistency among the research results low. Moreover, because most of the research are conducted in a specific period or on a specific figure, they are relatively scattered and unsystematic. To systematically and quantitatively study the psychological changes in the Central Plains represented by Henan Province, this article aimed to examine the self-reported discourses of historical celebrities in Henan in official history and their psycho-linguistic changes based on the classical Chinese Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (classical Chinese LIWC, CC-LIWC) psycholinguistic dictionary and the classical Chinese words segmentation system, using big data. The research found that the frequency of male words in Henan historical celebrities ( F = 2.938, p < 0.05), of differ words ( F = 4.767, p < 0.01), of motion words ( F = 4.042, p < 0.01), and of time words ( F = 5.412, p < 0.01) are significantly different among the five dynasties. The conclusion is that during the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods, 100 schools of thought contended, and the status of “scholars” in Henan rose. The frequency of male and differ words was at that point significantly higher than during the other dynasties. From “The Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought” to “The Supremacy of Confucianism,” the scholars in Henan were in decline, and differential cognitive tendencies had diminished since the Han dynasty. During the period of the Three Kingdoms and Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties, political powers and territories changed, and the historical celebrities in Henan show a remarkable tendency that were related to time and space. The psycho-linguistic changes found in this study are highly consistent with the development of social history, which indicates that the guidance of the social, political, and cultural environment has an important influence on the psycho-linguistic changes of social class. This is the first time that the text analysis system has been applied in classical Chinese to carry out quantitative research on the psycho-linguistic changes of ancient Chinese people, which provides new ideas and new methods for humanistic research.

Abstract:The paper analyzes the process of formation and development of Chinese character 法 which forms fundamental category of traditional law. Since ancient times, the law has been responsible for the regulation of social relations. It played an important role in shaping the legal culture of the state. The origins of European law are rooted in the legal and political teachings of ancient civilization. Traditional law has long played a prominent role in the life of the state and society in China. The functions of the law were in the methods of government and in the system of punishments. One of the most important features of Chinese culture is that it is closely related to the history of writing. Pictograms are the basis of Chinese characters writing. They originate in the archaic art of ancient China. Ancient signs are one of the main sources of information about ancient Chinese writing. The author analyzes the original image of this character, which was found on the ritual bronze vessel of the Western Zhou dynasty. It includes three main parts. The most interesting is the character of zhi (廌 ), which is translated as “a magic animal”. According to Chinese mythology, it is portrayed as a companion of the judge Gao Yao. It is also a symbol of justice.

Abstract:China's rural society had the new changes after the farming land reform. Class assimilation and class differentiation trends co-existed, newly shaped middle peasants and new rich peasants emerged as an important force. A spontaneous capitalist tendency, marked by land transactions, employment of workers, tenancy and money borrowing as well as a set of values which highly honor wealth reappeared. Meanwhile, the grassroots political elite began to resist the will of the state and revealed a centrifugal tendency of de-politicization. During the shift from land reform to collectivization, there were three correlated transformative mechanisms, namely the theory of stages, the theory of conditions, and the theory of substitution. These changes in rurual society after the land reform provided a driving force and validity for this shift.

Abstract:This article builds on recent archaeological theorizing about early complex societies to analyze the political anthropology of Neolithic and Bronze Age China in a culture-specific trajectory over the longue durée . Synthesizing the latest archaeological discoveries, I show that a series of successive declines, beginning around 2000 BC, took place throughout lowland China. This put an end to the lowland states of the Longshan period (2400–1900 BC) and provided the context for the constitution of the Erlitou secondary state (1900–1500 BC). Following the shift in "archaic states" studies from identifying "what" to investigating "how," I focus on the strategies, institutions, and relations that undergirded and sustained the Erlitou secondary state. I explore how heterogeneous lowland populations were reorganized after collapse, how a new collective identity was created through ritual and religious performance at the household level at Erlitou, and how Erlitou's ideologies, political system, and economic network were shaped by the upland polities and societies. Through a series of innovative practices, the Erlitou secondary state did not replicate the preceding Longshan states but instead pioneered a sociopolitical order that was repeatedly reenacted and referred to as a source of legitimacy in successive Bronze Age Central Plains polities.

Based on an introduction to relevant results achieved in the field of cultural psychology over the past few decades, this article summarized the characteristics of Chinese culture as relationship-based, collectivism and temporality-oriented. This is an important basis for studying the current situation and the development prospects of Chinese culture as well as the key to clarifying China's future political and social road. At the same time, kinship is crucial in Chinese culture. It is also the foundation for reestablishing Chinese social ethics and order.

Abstract:According to the basic characters of the Creation myth in the fiction,such as the destruc-tiveness of measure and the reformation of the order,this paper finds the first cultural archetype,from primal chaos to order;According to the regeneration of″Mei Jianchi″and the grow-up etiquette that the″Black man″played on Mei Jianchi,it finds the second cultural archetype,regeneration.On this foundation,the paper unites the two basic cultural archetypes through the important imagery and the narrative structure of this fiction,and sets up the essential archetype pattern of the fiction.

Abstract:Being recognized among the cradles of human civilization, ancient China nurtured the longest continuous academic traditions and humanistic spirits, which continue to impact today's society. With an unprecedented large-scale corpus spanning 3000 years, this paper presents a quantitative analysis of cultural evolution in ancient China. Millions of intertextual associations are identified and modelled with a hierarchical framework via deep neural network and graph computation, thus allowing us to answer three progressive questions quantitatively: (1) What is the interaction between individual scholars and philosophical schools? (2) What are the vicissitudes of schools in ancient Chinese history? (3) How did ancient China develop a cross-cultural exchange with an externally introduced religion such as Buddhism? The results suggest that the proposed hierarchical framework for intertextuality modelling can provide sound suggestions for large-scale quantitative studies of ancient literature. An online platform is developed for custom data analysis within this corpus, which encourages researchers and enthusiasts to gain insight into this work. This interdisciplinary study inspires the re-understanding of ancient Chinese culture from a digital humanities perspective and prompts the collaboration between humanities and computer science.
