Abstract:TiO2 films on the FTO (SnO2:F) coated glass substrates were prepared through spin coating via a sol-gel method. The FTO/TiO2 double-layer composite films were characterized by SEM, XRD, UV-Vis, and FTIR. The results demonstrate that the best photocatalytic activity of FTO/TiO2 composite films is achieved when TiO2 film thickness is about 210 nm. The water contact angle values of FTO/TiO2 composite films decrease with the increase of the UV irradiation exposure time of the films. FTO/TiO2 composite films have better hydrophilic after UV irradiation. The FTO substrates are protected by TiO2 layer and the composite films still retain a certain low-emission property after heat treatment. When the thickness of TiO2 film is about 210 nm, the composite films have both self-cleaning property and low-emission property.

Abstract:In this work, the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite, a high efficient TiO2-based photocatalyst, was synthesized by ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boil methods. Among which, the Er3+:YAlO3 is a kind of upconversion luminescence agent, which was prepared by nitrate-citric acid method. It can emit ultraviolet light under visible light excitation. The Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction and UV-vis spectral techniques. The degradation of Acid Red B dye was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite under solar light irradiation. It was found that the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite was much higher than that for the similar system with only Fe-doped TiO2. And the influencing factors, such as Er3+:YAlO3 content, irradiation time, initial concentration of Acid Red B, addition amount of Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 and NaCl, on the photocatalytic degradation were also investigated. The Er3+:YAlO3 as upconversion luminescence agent can elevate the photocatalytic activity of Fe-doped TiO2 powder. Moreover, the Fe2+ ion can restrain the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, this Er3+:YAlO3/Fe-doped TiO2 composite is a useful material for the detoxification of wastewater because it can efficiently utilize solar light by converting visible light into ultraviolet light.

Abstract:The TiO2/diatomite composite was synthesized through a mild hydrolysis of titanyl sulfate. The prepared composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-vis diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that the anatase TiO2 nanopartilces anchored on the surface of diatomite with Ti-O-Si bonds between diatomite and TiO2. The photodegradation of gaseous formaldehyde under UV irradiation by the TiO2/diatomite composite was studied under various operating conditions, including relative humidity, illumination intensity and catalyst amount, which have significant influence on the degradation process. The TiO2/diatomite composite exhibited better photocatalytic activity than pure TiO2, which could be attributed to the favorable nanoparticles dispersibility and strong formaldehyde adsorption capacity. In addition, the composite exhibited outstanding reusability over five cycles. The TiO2/diatomite composite shows great promising application foreground in formaldehyde degradation. Structure Influence of Fe~(3+)-TiO_(2)/SiO_(2) Film on the Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:Fe3+ ion doped titanium dioxide films coated on silica(Fe~(3+)-TiO_(2)/SiO_(2)) were prepared by sol-gel method. The obtained films were more effective than TiO_(2) nano-size powder in decomposing Rhodamine B under irridation with Xe lamp. In the Fe~(3+) doping system, the optimum value of the Fe~(3+)/Ti~(4+) (atomic ratio) was 0.03 % for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamin B. The experimental results suggested that the photocatalytic reactions with the titanium dioxide nanosize powder and film as the catalyst proceed in two different degradation mechnisms. By the characterization using XRD, SEM, Raman, and FTIR technologies, we can conclude that the surface layer structure of TiO_(2) film on silica and the formation of Ti-O-Si bond play important roles with the increasing of degradation efficiency, and result in two different decomposition mechanisms for film and power.

Abstract:In this work, Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite was synthesized by a ultrasonic dispersion and liquid boil method. The Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite and pure TiO2 powder were characterized by XRD. The degradation of different organic dyes was used to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite. It is found that the photocatalytic activity of Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite is much higher than that for the similar system with only TiO2. Moreover, this Er3+:YAlO3/TiO2 composite provides a new way to take advantage of TiO2 in sewage treatment aspects using solar light.

The thickness of film could be simply controlled by changing the number of coatings, and anatase TiO2 film could be formed after calcination. The prepared thin films were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultravioletvisible spectrophotometry (UV-vis), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The photodegradations of organic pollutants including colored dye and colorless antibiotic were tested and found to be thickness-dependent. Additionally, the prepared film photocatalst has good stability and may have potential applications in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The Fe-TiO2 photocatalysts synthesized by a sol–gel method have the mesoporous structure with a narrow pore size distribution, large pore volume and high surface area. The incorporated Fe3+ substitutes the octahedrally coordinated Ti4+ in the TiO2 lattice to extend the absorption of TiO2 to visible light region and promote the formation of electron–hole pair. Additionally, the separation and transportation efficiency increase with the doping of Fe3+ increasing from 0.1% to 0.7%, while decreases remarkably with the doping concentration increasing from 0.7% to 1.5%. The Fe-TiO2 shows excellent photocatalytic performance for toluene degradation under visible light irradiation. The optimal Fe/Ti ratio is 0.7%. Partial deactivation of the photocatalytic activity was observed after 20 consecutive reaction runs. From the in situ DRIFTS experiment, the deactivation reason can be attributed to the formation of stable intermediates, such as benzaldehyde and benzoic acid, which occupied the active sites on the surface of the photocatalyst. The adsorbed benzaldehyde and benzoic acid can be removed with heat treatment at 653K for 3h and the deactivated photocatalyst can be regenerated completely.

Abstract:TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel method with stearic acid(STA) as an anti-reuniting agent.The properties of TiO2 photocatalyst were examined by using BET,XRD and Raman techniques.It was found that STA could restrain the sintering of TiO2 grain size and raise the phase transfor temperature of TiO2 crystal.As the diameter of TiO2 particles decreases,the Raman peak shifts to blue and the energy alternation increases slightly.The catalytic activity reached maximal at the molar ratio of 1.5 STA to 1 titanium(IV) tetrabutanoxide,calcining temperature of 450 ℃ and catalyst density of 2 g·L-1.After irradiation of 300 W Hg lamp for 2 hours,the phenolic degradation rate was 97.0%.

Abstract:Using Ti(OC₄H₉)₄ as a precursor, Fe(NO₃)₃⋅9H₂O as the source of iron, and NH₄NO₃ as the source of nitrogen, an Fe/N codoped TiO₂ catalyst was prepared using a sol-gel hydrothermal method. The as-prepared powders were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. Fe and N codoping resulted in decreased crystallite size and increased specific surface area. Results of the photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) in a continuous-flow fluidized-bed reactor indicated that the maximum decolorization (more than 90%) of AO7 occurred with the Fe/N-TiO₂ catalyst (dosage of 20 g/L) when a combination of visible light irradiation for 10 h HRT (hydraulic retention time), and a heterogeneous system was used. The AO7 degradation efficiency was considerably improved by increasing the hydraulic retention time from 2.5 to 10 h or by reducing the initial AO7 concentration from 300 to 100 mg/L. The reaction rate increased with the light intensity and the maximum value occurred at 35 mW/cm²; moreover, the efficiency of the AO7 degradation increased when the pH decreased with maximum efficiency at pH 3.

Abstract:The uniform and transparent nano-crystalline thin films of pure and co-doped with Fe3+/Sn4+ titanium dioxide photo-catalysts were prepared via sol-gel dip-coating process, and were loaded firmly on the surface of glass substrates. The structure and surface morphology of films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In particular, the photo-catalytic activity of films was measured by ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrophotometer. Methyl orange was used as a model compound to study the photo-catalytic activity of films. The effects of the concentrations of doping ions and the number of layers on photo-catalytic degradation of methyl orange solutions were investigated. Experimental results showed clearly that the co-doping of iron and tin ions exhibited a synergistic effect. which increased significantly the photo-catalytic activity of titanium dioxide. Especially, the photo-catalytic activity of nano-crystalline titanium dioxide thin films co-doped with 0.1 mol%Fe3+ and 11.41mol%Sn 4+ was 2.0 times higher than that of those un-doped for photo-degradation of methyl orange solutions under the 125W self-ballasted fluorescent high-pressure mercury lamp irradiation.
Effects of Electron Transfer between TiO2Films and Conducting Substrates on the Photocatalytic Oxidation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:TiO2 films on Al alloy (Al), indium-tin oxide glass (ITO/glass), and glass were prepared by a dip-coating method. ITO is found to have a higher work function, while the work function for Al is lower than that of TiO2 films. An electron transfer is indicated to occur in the interfaces between TiO2 films and conducting substrate Al or ITO, which results in an Ohm contact or Schottky barrier under the transient equilibrium UV radiation conditions. Photocatalytic measurements showed that the TiO2 films on Al have a higher activity for photocatalytic oxidation of C2H4, but the activity for photocatalytic degradation of oleic acid is lower as compared with TiO2 films on glass. Alternatively, TiO2 films on ITO give completely contrary photocatalytic performance to those on Al. These observations could be associated with the electron transfer, in which Al acts as an electron donor and offers electrons to TiO2, allowing photocatalytic oxidation of ethylene to proceed by the photogenerated electrons, while ITO could be an acceptor for the photogenerated electrons, which is beneficial to photocatalytic degradation of oleic acid by the photogenerated holes. This electron-transfer model could be extended to other photocatalytic systems.

Preparation and photo-catalytic properties of nanostructured TiO2 thin films coated on different ceramics

Abstract:In the research,titanium dioxide films were coated on two kinds of ceramics by using sol-gel method.XRD,XPS and SEM were used to investigate their photo-catalytic property.The results indicated that the average grainsize of TiO_2 was about 15 nm,the TiO_2 thin film coated on the vitreous enamel was uniform and continuous,which thickness was about 300 nm,and the films coated on the stoneware were nonuniform;some(ions) from the two substrates were observed to permeated to the films by XPS.Photocatatytic degradation experiment showed that phenol can be degraded by the TiO_2 thin films coated on the two kinds of ceramics,its kinetics was the first order,the photocatalytic activity followed the decreasing order: TiO_2/vitreous enamel>TiO_2/stoneware;it was considered that Ca~(2+) permeated from substrates could reduce the photocatalytic activity,and the TiO_2 thin films could degrade Badistan wastewater.When the degradation experiments were repeated 20 times for the same film,the removal ration of TiO_2/vitreous enamel and TiO_2/stoneware were decreased 9% and 6% respectively.
Characterization and photocatalytic activity of different molar ratios of TiO2 thin films prepared by Sol-Gel process

Abstract:Photocatalytic application has been of large interest due to its new technology for organic pollution. Among the photocatalyst, titanium dioxide thin film is known as a photocatalyst for the elimination of organic pollutants. In this research, the structural and optical properties of TiO2 thin films prepared on glass substrates were studied, using a sol-gel (spin coating) technique. TiO2 thin films were deposited with molar ratio y between [TTIP] and [AcAc] concentration, which varied from 0.5 to 2. Photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films are studied by using sunlight and photodegradation of methylene blue as a water pollutant evaluated until the photocatalytic process enhances with the molar ratio. Absorbance spectra were measured using a spectrophotometer. Test results showed that the photocatalytic sunlight /TiO2 thin film is a promising method for treating wastewater. The quantity of acetylacetone in the precursor solution had no significant effect on the optical and structural properties of the TiO2 thin films. Films consisted of the anatase phase, with a band gap in the range of 3.38–3.51 eV and thickness in the range of 534–618 nm. However, the molar ratio effect on photocatalytic preperties, the best photodegradation rate reaches to 94% in y = 0.66 at t = 180 min.

Abstract:The development of novel photocatalysts with high photocatalytic ability is important in the field of photocatalytic degradation and transformation. In this work, we combined ilmenite phase FeTiO3 and TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) through a cross-linking method to produce novel hexagonal FeTiO3/TiO2 composites coated by nanosized TiO2 particles. Their morphology, crystallinity, and light absorption ability were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) analyses, respectively. The heterojunction effect between FeTiO3 and TiO2 could promote the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, gave the FeTiO3/TiO2 composites strong oxidizing ability, and increased absorption of Xe lamp light. When used as photocatalysts toward phenolic compounds and dyes, the 5% FeTiO3/TiO2 composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The intermediate product of 4-chlorophenol degradation was also characterized, and the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the as-prepared FeTiO3/TiO2 composite materials show promise as a photocatalyst for environmental remediation, which could be applied to water pollution control.

Abstract:TiO₂ sol was produced by the sol-gel method through the hydrolysis and the aging of tetrabutyl titanate and the TiO₂ film was obtained by dipping and uniform lifting of the acid-treated and ultrasound-treated clean glass slides into the TiO₂ sol followed by aging, drying, and calcination. The effect of the hydrolysis control agents to the formed sol was researched and the crystalline state, the morphology, and the photocatalytic properties of the products after calcination were characterized. The structural morphology, the contact angles before and after illumination, and the self-cleaning properties of the TiO₂ film were characterized as well. The results showed that by using acetylacetone as the hydrolysis control agent, the formed TiO₂ sol had relatively high stability. The product after the calcination of the TiO₂ sol was of single anatase type with crystalline size of 18-20 nm and it could degrade nearly 100% of methylene blue after 90 min illumination. The formed TiO₂ film is compact, continuous, smooth, and had the properties of super-hydrophilicity (after 30 min illumination due to its contact angle decreasing from 21° to nearly 0°) and anti-fogging capability, which indicated its excellent self-cleaning property.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel immobilization method for the preparation of highly dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles supported on porous glass beads. The method involves an in situ ion exchange process and a calcination process. Mono-dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles exhibiting the anatase phase with different mean diameter and different loading amount have been successfully prepared through the controllable and green way. With the increase of loading amount of Ti from 0.08wt.% to 4.55wt.%, the mean diameter of the TiO2 nanoparticles varied from 3.8 to 5.3nm. And the band gaps of the TiO2 nanoparticles with the highest and lowest loading amount are 3.25 and 3.00eV, respectively. The prepared TiO2 nanoparticles supported on porous glass beads showed excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methyl orange (MO). For the catalyst with a Ti content of 0.08wt.%, when the dosage was 1.93e−5g/mL, 65% of the total MO decomposed after 30min; for the catalyst with a Ti content of 2.56wt.%, when the dosage reached 0.81e−3g/mL, complete degradation was observed.
