Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a label-free spectroscopic technique that is highly sensitive to various surface reactions. Incorporating SPR into electrochemical measurements has emerged as a powerful method to study both faradaic and non-faradaic processes. SPR microscopy (SPRM) integrates an optical microscope into SPR detection, which further offers high throughput detection and spatially resolved information at an electrode surface and thus, has attracted attention especially in single entity electrochemical studies. In this review, the progress in the studies of electrochemical interfaces by SPR and SPRM during the past two years will be discussed.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries that make renewable energy resources feasible for electrification technologies have been extensively investigated. Their corresponding performance is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics and chemical dynamics of internal electrode and electrolyte materials under operating conditions. To enhance battery performance and lifetime, a comprehensive understanding of the structure‐dynamics‐performance correlation of such materials under different working conditions is of great significance. Fortunately, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) encompassing high‐resolution imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis, offers unprecedented insights into the nano/atomic scale structural changes and degradation pathways of rechargeable battery materials under operational conditions. Such insights are pivotal for a deep‐rooted understanding of reaction mechanisms and the structure‐activity interplay within battery materials. This work, therefore, highlights the advances in in situ TEM's utility in unveiling dynamic chemical and physical changes in real‐time within battery materials of rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical processes and degradation mechanisms are systematically explored and summarized. Moreover, the technical progress, challenges, and valuable insights provided by in situ TEM techniques for addressing critical issues in battery materials are underscored. The work concludes with a discussion of emerging research directions that hold the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy field in the near future.

Abstract:This paper presents a review of voltammetric and related methods implemented with low-cost, mainly lab-made instrumentation. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing low-cost electrochemical instrumentation. Advances in electronics and software have made it easier to access high-performance components for the construction of potentiostats. Currently, lab-made instrumentation for electrochemical research can be very simple, with minimal components to perturb the system and record the response signal. It can also be very advanced, using high-performance electronic components and software development. Several authors have presented the feasibility of designing and manufacturing electrochemical instruments for voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry, and electrodeposition. This review presents some available options, ranging from basic to advanced. The aim is to provide readers with the full range of possibilities for using their own instruments, especially in cases where access to commercial apparatus is difficult or where specific applications are needed, for example in the Internet of Things or artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The processing of data in voltammetry is crucial for extracting mechanistic and kinetic information about the electrode reaction under study. One of the most advanced pulse-voltammetric techniques, square-wave voltammetry (SWV), allows for the investigation of electrode mechanisms, measurement of fast electron transfer reaction rates, and quantitative detection of redox species at sub-micromolar concentration levels. To ensure reliable comparison and fitting of experimental and theoretical data, several ideas for appropriate data processing have been proposed, considering the differences between experimentally accessible current and the dimensionless current function used in the theory and mathematical modeling of electrode processes in SWV. Significantly, in the context of advanced and recently introduced double-sampled square-wave voltammetry, a novel methodology for data analysis has been introduced. This methodology transforms the conventional current-potential function (i.e., voltammogram) into a current-current function, analogous to complex numbers. By employing this methodology, the accessible kinetic interval is extended, allowing for the measurement of very fast, virtually reversible electrode reactions characterized by a standard rate constant as high as 0.1 cm s–1.

Abstract:Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) at carbon-fiber microelectrodes (CFMEs) is a versatile electrochemical technique to probe neurochemical dynamics in vivo. Progress in FSCV methodology continues to address analytical challenges arising from biological needs to measure low concentrations of neurotransmitters at specific sites. This review summarizes recent advances in FSCV method development in three areas: (1) waveform optimization, (2) electrode development, and (3) data analysis. First, FSCV waveform parameters such as holding potential, switching potential, and scan rate have been optimized to monitor new neurochemicals. The new waveform shapes introduce better selectivity toward specific molecules such as serotonin, histamine, hydrogen peroxide, octopamine, adenosine, guanosine, and neuropeptides. Second, CFMEs have been modified with nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes or replaced with conducting polymers to enhance sensitivity, selectivity, and antifouling properties. Different geometries can be obtained by 3D-printing, manufacturing arrays, or fabricating carbon nanopipettes. Third, data analysis is important to sort through the thousands of CVs obtained. Recent developments in data analysis include preprocessing by digital filtering, principal components analysis for distinguishing analytes, and developing automated algorithms to detect peaks. Future challenges include multisite measurements, machine learning, and integration with other techniques. Advances in FSCV will accelerate research in neurochemistry to answer new biological questions about dynamics of signaling in the brain.

Abstract:Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) is a type of electron microscopy based on the photoelectric effect,in which the difference of photoemission yield in space is used as the image contrast.Owing to its outstanding features such as high speed imaging,ultra-high spatial resolution and nondestructive measurement,extensive applications of PEEM have been reported in surface physics,surface plasmonics and semiconductor science.In addition,ultrafast pump and probe techniques provide sufficient time resolution for kinetic studies with high spatiotemporal resolution.PEEM with multidimensional and intuitive measuring methods has opened up new venues for researchers.In this paper we first review the development of microscopic imaging and current progress in the application of PEEM to surface plasmonics and semiconductor science.We then describe the femtosecond-time resolved PEEM system and relevant research in Peking University,followed by a discussion of future prospects.

Abstract:Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is a scanning probe technique capable of imaging substrate topography and measuring the local electrochemical reactivity of interfaces. Since introduced by Allen J. Bard and co-workers in 1989, it has expanded into a wide variety of fields, such as nanomaterial characterization, energy, kinetics, electrocatalysis, metal anti-corrosion, biology and instrumental development. SECM uses an ultra-microelectrode as the probe to record redox current during probe scanning across sample surfaces to obtain local topography and electrochemical reactivity of samples. Specifically, three main topics are reviewed and discussed: (1) the working principles and operating modes of SECM; (2) the recent developments in the application of SECM in energy science, including solar cell, rechargeable batteries, fuel cell and supercapacitors, with an emphasis on the last five years (2019-2023); (3) the perspectives and outlook of SECM in various energy devices. We anticipate that a wider adoption of SECM by the energy community will allow for the operando characterization of many types of reactions, and hold the potential to provide new insights into the structure/activity and composition/activity relationships.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryElectrochemical mass spectrometry (EC‐MS) is a powerful tool to capture and analyze the intermediates and products during electrochemical reactions. This hyphenated technique combines electrochemistry with mass spectrometry using specific apparatuses, which helps researchers study mechanisms of redox reactions by in situ detecting chemical composition changes. Recently, various EC‐MS methods have been applied in a series of electrochemical reactions to reveal the mechanisms, mainly in the areas of electrochemical sensors, organic electrochemistry, and electrocatalysis. In this review, we intend to summarize the recent advances in real‐time analysis of different types of electrochemical reactions by EC‐MS and offer an outlook on the perspectives in these areas.

Abstract:In this work, a portable digital-control electrochemical system with automatic ohmic drop compensation for fast scan voltammetry was developed. The whole system consists of waveform generator module, detection module, power management module, display module, WiFi module and keying module, and it is digitally controlled. Based on the positive feedback technology and the control of microcontroller, ohmic drop could be 100% compensated automatically. Performance and behavior of this system are tested with dummy cells and an actual electrochemical cell using the redox reaction of ferrocene as a model, it was found that the highest scan rate 400 V/s could be achieved. And, it was applied to ultrasensitive detection of chromium(III), with a limit of detection of 0.3 pmol/L. In addition, it is portable because of light weight and small volume. Thus, this portable digital-control electrochemical system with automatic ohmic drop compensation opens the avenue for extensive research and application of fast scan voltammetry, especially in the construction of ultrasensitive sensors.

Abstract:The voltammetric electrochemical sensing method combined with biosensors and multi-sensor systems can quickly, accurately, and reliably analyze the concentration of the main analyte and the overall characteristics of complex samples. Simultaneously, the high-dimensional voltammogram contains the rich electrochemical features of the detected substances. Chemometric methods are important tools for mining valuable information from voltammetric data. Chemometrics can aid voltammetric biosensor calibration and multi-element detection in complex matrix conditions. This review introduces the voltammetric analysis techniques commonly used in the research of voltammetric biosensor and electronic tongues. Then, the research on optimizing voltammetric biosensor results using classical chemometrics is summarized. At the same time, the incorporation of machine learning and deep learning has brought new opportunities to further improve the detection performance of biosensors in complex samples. Finally, smartphones connected with miniaturized voltammetric biosensors and chemometric methods provide a high-quality portable analysis platform that shows great potential in point-of-care testing.

Abstract:The foundation of the development of flexible semiconductor and micro-nano ultrafast response devices in the post-Moore era is to measure and manipulate ultrafast optical physical processes in new materials and devices with extreme spatiotemporal small-scale. The spatiotemporal- and energy-resolved photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) combines the pump-probe optical scheme with the electron microscopic imaging technology and possesses femtosecond-nanometer time-space resolution. It has evolved into an excellent ultrafast microscopy technique for investigating nanophotonics and low-dimensional device physics, leading to the revolutionary development of plasmonics, semiconductor science and related cross-disciplinary studies. In this review, we have summarized the application of PEEM in micro-nano plasmonic function devices, high-order plasmonic vortex fields, plasmonic skyrmion, and low-dimensional semiconductors. Finally, we discussed the future opportunities of PEEM.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">With the rising demand for fast-charging technology in electric vehicles and portable devices, significant efforts have been devoted to the development of the high-rate batteries. Among numerous candidates, rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are a promising option due to its high theoretical capacity, low redox potential of zinc metal anode and inherent high ionic conductivity of aqueous electrolyte. As the strong electrostatic interaction between Zn<sup class="a-plus-plus">2+</sup> and host generally leads to sluggish electrode kinetics, many strategies have been proposed to enhance fast (dis)charging performance. Herein, we review the state-of-the-art ultrafast aqueous ZIBs and focus on the rational electrode-designing strategies, such as crystal structure engineering, nanostructuring and morphology controlling, conductive materials introducing and organic molecule designing. Recent research directions and future perspectives are also proposed in this review.</p>

Abstract:The availability of solid electrolytes promisingly boosts the energy density of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet the accurate voltammetry measurement of their electrochemical windows (EWs) poses a longstanding and critical concern. In this work, the mechanism of EW measurement of electrolytes is explained using the electrical double layer theory. The influence of crucial variables in voltammetry, including the scan mode, the working electrode, and the selection of two- or three-electrode test systems is investigated. Furthermore, the step voltammetry method is proposed and applied to EW testing of the inorganic solid electrolyte Li10GeP2S12 for the first time. Finally, suggestions for EW measurement of electrolytes are presented. The results of this work promote a comprehensive understanding and more accurate EW measurement of electrolytes, facilitating the selection of suitable solid electrolytes to match different cathodes, thus advancing the development of safer high-energy density LIBs.

Abstract:AbstractA circuit based on the current feedback operational amplifier was constructed to accomplish on‐line ohmic drop compensation in ultrafast cyclic voltammetry. Firstly, its characteristics were confirmed experimentally on dummy cells. Then the reduction of anthracene in acetonitrile, a classical test example with very fast electron‐transfer kinetics, was examined to prove them too. The results showed that this circuit could afford excellent ohmic drop compensation so that the undistorted voltammograms up to 2.2 MV*s−1 scan rate can be recorded, and 2.5 MV*s−1 if 5% error is tolerated.

Abstract:Ultrafast spintronics is one of the most promising fields for information processing technology innovation. When compared with traditional electronic devices, new spin-based devices have advantages such as low power consumption, high speed, and nonvolatility. Exploring novel physical phenomena and mechanisms relating to electronic spins significantly promotes the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this review, we outline a sequence of advances in the fields of ultrafast magnetics and spintronics. First, a quick overview of spintronics and the discovery of ultrafast demagnetization induced by a femtosecond laser is provided. The proposed physical mechanisms and theories of ultrafast spin dynamics are then summarized, including the phenomenological three-temperature model, computations based on the time-dependent density functional theory, the Elliott-Yafet spin-flip mechanism, and the nonlocal superdiffusive spin transport model. Following that, the most recent experimental and theoretical studies on all-optical switching of ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic metals are thoroughly reviewed. Furthermore, the discovery of hot-electron spin transport induced by ultrashort lasers as well as its influence on ultrafast magnetization dynamics, ultrafast spin transfer torque, spin injection into semiconductors, and spin accumulation and dissipation in hot-electron transport are described. The advancements in the optimization and manipulation of spintronics-based terahertz emitters are reviewed and analyzed. Finally, we discuss the current challenges in ultrafast spintronics research as well as possible future studies.

Abstract:Ferroelectric materials have been a key research topic owing to their wide variety of modern electronic and photonic applications. For the quick exploration of higher operating speed, smaller size, and superior efficiencies of novel ferroelectric devices, the ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectrics that directly reflect their respond time and lifetimes have drawn considerable attention. Driven by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy that allows for probing, controlling, and modulating dynamic processes of ferroelectrics in real-time, much research efforts have been made to understand and exploit the ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectric. Herein, the current state of ultrafast dynamic features of ferroelectrics tracked by time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy is reviewed, which includes ferroelectrics order parameters of polarization, lattice, spin, electronic excitation, and their coupling. Several potential perspectives and possible further applications combining ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and ferroelectrics are also presented. This review offers a clear guidance of ultrafast dynamics of ferroelectric orders, which may promote the rapid development of next-generation devices.

Abstract:The simulation optimization and an experimental demonstration of improved performances of mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV UED) are reported in this paper. Using ultrashort high quality electron pulses from an S-band photocathode rf gun and a polycrystalline aluminum foil as the sample, we experimentally demonstrated an improved spatial resolution of MeV UED, in which the Debye-Scherrer rings of the (111) and (200) planes were clearly resolved. This result showed that MeV UED is capable to achieve an atomic level spatial resolution and a approximately 100 fs temporal resolution simultaneously, and will be a unique tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.

Abstract:We review the technique and research of the ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolved spectroscopy and its applications in the field of the ultrafast dynamics of mesoscopic systems and nanomaterials. Combining femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM), we can obtain the spectra with ultrahigh temporal and spatial resolutions simultaneously. Some problems in doing so are discussed. Then we show the important applications of the ultrahigh spatiotemporal resolved spectroscopy with a few typical examples.

Abstract:A brief overview of the basic principles and main applications of ultrafast photoemission electron microscopy is presented in this paper. Then, the progress of our research on ultrafast photoemission electron microscopy, including near-field imaging, near-field spectroscopy, and time-resolved ultrafast dynamics, in the field of nanophotonics, particularly in the field of surface plasmonics, is highlighted. These studies not only help to deepen understanding of the fundamental properties of surface plasmons and the interaction among different modes but also benefit the design and development of surface plasmonic applications. Finally, further potential applications of this technique arc prospected.
