Abstract:The shear modulus and damping ratio of soils at low to medium strains are essential input parameters in dynamic response analysis of soils. As soil elements in the field always have a history of being subjected to vibrations due to earthquakes, construction works, and vehicle motions, etc., the previbration effect on the dynamic properties of soils needs to be addressed appropriately. This study presents a series of tests performed by a newly developed resonant column system that enables the assessment of the dynamic properties of soils that have only undergone dozens of vibration cycles to investigate the impact of the vibration history on the dynamic properties of dry sand. Both the shear modulus and damping ratio of sand under different confining pressures (p′) are measured after the application of a previbration with a wide range of vibration amplitudes (γpre) and number of cycles (N). The results show that an elastic threshold strain exists for the dynamic properties of sand, beyond which the effect of the vibration history can be identified from the shear modulus reduction and damping ratio curves. The results also confirm that the effect of the vibration history on dry sand depends on the test variables of γpre, N, and p′. In addition, a new interpretation method is proposed to quantify the combined effects of γpre and N on the signature of the vibration history, which could potentially be useful for interpreting the dynamic properties of the in situ soils that may experience previbration.

Abstract:A series of drained triaxial compression tests under different conditions were performed to quantitatively study the influence of the initial void ratio and plasticity index on the shear strength of remolded saturated clays. The test results show that both the peak stress friction angle and peak deviatoric stress decrease with increasing initial void ratio and plasticity index of the soil under the same confining pressure; whereas, they increase with increasing confining pressure of the soil under the same initial void ratio and plasticity index. A new synthesized physical parameter λ, which simultaneously represent both the type and the condition of remolded saturated clays, is defined based on the test results in this work. The functional relationships among the parameters φd and peak deviatoric stress in Mohr-Coulomb equation and the parameter λ are established to develop a modified Mohr-Coulomb equation by considering physical properties of soil. In this equation, only two input parameters, i.e., λ and the confine pressure, are needed to predict the shear strength of the soil. In order to check the accuracy of the proposed equation, laboratory tests were conducted to evaluate against the predicted results. The results show that the peak shear strength of remolded saturated clays can be well described by the proposed equation. Abstract:In geotechnical laboratory testing, a cyclic sine wave loading is applied to samples to simulate seismic loading. The shear stress amplitude in cyclic tests, the cyclic stress ratio (CSR) is always used to express the resistance of soil to cyclic loading. However, the cyclic strength of samples subjected to different cyclic stress patterns can exhibit quite differently. Apart from the possibility of the continuous rotation of the principal stress direction, the difference in shear stress due to cyclic changes induced by different cyclic stress paths is also an influential factor. A new parameter is presented in this paper, the equivalent cyclic stress ratio (ESR), which is defined as the ratio of the mean value of the maximum shear stress in a cycle to the initial effective confining pressure. With the hollow cylinder apparatus, several series of cyclic loading tests were carried out on Fujian fine sand and Qiantang silt. The ESR-based data all fall within a very narrow band in the half logarithmic coordinate, even when cyclic stress paths are different. Test results from Ishihara on Toyoura sand were also re-analyzed using the new index, and a similar correlation was evidenced for loose sand under various cyclic stress paths. For dense and very dense sands, the treatment can also narrow the discreteness of results. With this new index, the cyclic strength of soil obtained from relatively simple tests, e.g. cyclic triaxial tests or cyclic torsional shear tests can be easily used to predict the cyclic strength of soil subjected to combined cyclic shear stresses.

Abstract:A total of 153 cyclic triaxial tests were performed on 19 sand-gravel mixtures over the strain range of 10(-5)-10(-2), which shows that the particle characteristics have significant influence on the small-strain shear-modulus G(0), shear modulus reduction G/G(0,) and damping ratio lambda. An improved Hardin's equation for the G(0) was proposed to consider the effects of particle characteristics and consolidation state. Furthermore, the KZM model correlation was improved to characterize the G/G(0) curve. A four-parameter equation of lambda with parent rock type, particle gradation, and consolidation condition was also introduced to characterize the lambda curve.

Abstract:Based on the macroscopic equivalent model and microscopic contact theories, the shear wave velocity was studied. Considered as a kind of homogeneous, continuous and isotropic media macroscopically, the sand was assumed microscopically as an aggregate of randomly packed uniform equivalent spheres with the same material properties. Then, the formulas of the equivalent shear modulus and shear wave velocity in sand were derived by using particle contact theory and by introducing the correcting coefficient of the granule shape. The main influencing factors were analyzed through quantitative calculations. The results indicate that the shear wave velocity is mainly influenced by void ratio, elastic modulus of sand granule, burial depth and the correcting coefficient of the granule shape, while it is hardly influenced by inner friction angle, Poisson’s ratio of sand granule, density of the sand and the constant connected with the coordination number. Through comparison, the calculation results using the present formulas agree well with measured data so as to verify the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:According to the results of cyclic triaxial tests on Hangzhou sands, a correlation is presented between liquefaction resistance and elastic shear modulus. Material-dependent but independent of confining stress, shows the linear relation of (σd/2)1/2 with Gmax. For its application to different soils, a method proposed by Tokimatsu [Tokimatsu K, Uchida A. Correlation between liquefaction resistance and shear wave velocity. Soils Found 1990:30(2):33–42] is utilized to normalize the shear modulus with respect to minimum void ratio. A simplified equation is established to evaluate the liquefaction potential by shear-wave velocity. The critical shear-wave velocity of liquefaction is in linear relation with 1/4 power of depth and the peak horizontal ground surface acceleration during earthquakes. The equation proposed in this paper is compared with previous methods especially the procedure proposed by Andrus [RD Andrus, KH Stokoe. Liquefaction resistance of soils from shear-wave velocity. J Geotech Geoenviron Eng 2000:126(11):1015–25]. The results show its simplicity and effectiveness when applied to sands, but more validation or modification is needed for its application to sand with higher fines content.

Abstract:Shear strength equation is a basic theory for solving many geotechnical engineering problems. Although the shear strength equation has received widespread attention, shear strength of clay under wide suction range and different initial void ratio e conditions cannot be well predicted. This study aims to establish a new strength equation applicable to soils within a wide suction range. Considering the capillary and adsorptive parts of soil–water interactions, a cohesion expression related to the degree of adsorbed water saturation Sra and the effective stress related to the degree of capillary water saturation Src are proposed. After that, based on the Mohr–Coulomb theory, a shear strength equation of unsaturated soils in a wide range of suction under various e is proposed. Five parameters are included in the equation. It is easy to calibrate them through shear tests on saturated and the fully dried soils. It is verified that not only the sandy clay till and clayed silt but also the expansive soil's shear strength in wide ranges of suction under various e can be well predicted.

Abstract:The testing and evaluation about the quality of dynamic compaction is a very important part during high embankment foundation improvement. Based on the theory and practice, the correlation of the test results between Rayleigh wave test(RWT), dynamic penetration test(DPT) and pile static load test(PLT) were studied according to the 1 000 kV ultra-high voltage(UHV) substation. Showing that the results of RWT and DPT can verify the results of PLT, and the first two can be used as indirect means for dynamic compaction detection, which may be appropriate to reduce the assignments of PLT which costs so much and lasts so longer. According to the test results, the mathematical expression of the test results are fitted. Based on the results, the relationship of V-s and fk can be expressed by power function, and the relationship between V-s and E-0 and N-120 can be expressed by exponential function. And the effective reinforcement depth of dynamic compaction and other soil mechanical parameters are inferred. Based on the measured value of the effective reinforcement depth of dynamic compaction, the correction coefficient from 0.24 to 0.27 were putted forward according to Menard formula. The research results will provide certain reference value for the similar projects.

Abstract:According to the results of cyclic triaxial tests, a linear correlation is presented between liquefaction resistance and elastic shear modulus, which shows the relation of Gmax (kPa) with (σd/2)1/2(kPa)1/2. When applied to soils from different sites, the correlation can be normalized in reference to its minimum void ratio (emin). Accordingly, an improved method is established to evaluate the liquefaction potential with shear-wave velocity. The critical shear-wave velocity of liquefaction is in linear relation with 1/4 power of depth and the maximum acceleration during earthquakes, which can be used to explain the phenomenon that the possibility of liquefaction decreases with the increment of the depth. Compared with previous methods this method turns out simple and effective, which is also verified by the results of cyclic triaxial tests.

Abstract:Recent studies using field case history data yielded new criteria for evaluating liquefaction potential in saturated granular deposits based on in situ, stress-corrected shear wave velocity. However, the conditions of relatively insufficient case histories and limited site conditions in this approach call for additional data to more reliably define liquefaction resistance as a function of shear wave velocity. In this study, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on saturated sand with shear wave velocity V s measured by bender element. By normalizing the data with respect to minimum void ratio, the test results, incorporated with previously published laboratory data, statistically revealed good correlation of cyclic shear strength with small-strain shear modulus for sandy soils, which is almost irrespective of soil types and confining pressures. The consequently determined cyclic resistance ratio, CRR , was found to be approximately proportional to V s 4 . Liquefaction resistance boundary curves were established by applying this relationship and compared to liquefaction criteria derived from seismic field measurements. Although in the range of V s1 >200 m/s the presented curves are moderately conservative, they are remarkably consistent with the published field performance criteria on the whole.

Abstract:In the conventional effective stress method of site seismic response analysis, the changes of small strain shear modulus G(max) are only with the effective stress and void ratio. While the latest experimental studies show that under large amplitude vibration, there exists additional attenuation of G(max). 298 groups of G(max) data of different types of soil under large amplitude vibration are collected and analyzed, based on which the computational equations corresponding to two additional attenuation modes of G(max) are provided. A one-dimensional site seismic response analytical program has been compiled based on effective stress principle, to account for the influence of additional attenuation of G(max). A typical example and a dynamic centrifuge model test of sand field are separately simulated using the compiled program. It turns out that, the additional attenuation of G(max) has influence on both the response of accelerations and shear stresses. Besides, it can speed up the liquefaction of site and expand the final liquefied range. Numerical simulation of the centrifuge model test shows that, the acceleration and pore pressure responses are in good agreement with the experimental results when considering additional attenuation of G(max). However, in case of strong acceleration, liquefaction comes soon, and the influence of additional attenuation of G(max) on site dynamic response becomes weakened instead.
Assessing the Bearing Capacity of Backfills by Stress Wave Velocity and Cone Penetration Resistance

Abstract:Sand-cone test is one of the most common tests performed to assess the compaction quality of backfills for earth works. However, performing such test is time consuming and can only obtain the density and water content of backfills. In order to obtain their engineering properties, such as strength or bearing capacity, additional tests such as California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test or plate loading test must be performed. In this study, a miniature dynamic cone penetrometer was developed. The feasibility of assessing the bearing capacity of backfills by stress wave velocity and dynamic cone penetration resistance was investigated. Samples of a silty clay were compacted with various compaction energy and moisture contents. In addition to the density and moisture content, the CBR, P-wave and S-wave velocity, as well as penetration resistance of a mini cone of these samples were measured. Linear relationships between the CBR and S-wave velocity/penetration resistance were found. Therefore, it is feasible to assess the bearing capacity of backfills by these two techniques.
Seepage test and empirical models for soils based on GDS apparatus

Abstract:In order to reveal the seepage characteristics of Ningbo marine soft clay under various hydraulic gradient,confining pressure and void ratio,eight series of constant head seepage tests were performed on both undisturbed and remolded soil samples utilizing the GDS apparatus.Fitting study of the widely used seepage models in academic field was conducted by the test results.It is shown that seepage coefficients of test samples decrease nonlinearly with decreasing void ratio,which behave more obviously on remolded soil samples.Similar seepage behaviors were obtained from both remolded and undisturbed soils as well,and the test results agreed well with fitting lines of the four existing seepage models.A new nonlinear empirical model was proposed,and test data of ten kinds of soils were collected to investigate its rationality and applicability.The comparison research on fitting results shows that the new model is better used than four existing seepage models,and the application of this new model turns to worth further research.

Abstract:The shear wave velocity method has become an increasingly popular means to evaluate the liquefaction potential of granular soils. Understanding the fundamental mechanism underlying existing empirical or semi-empirical relationships is important for better assessing their reliability. This paper presents a particle-scale study of the correlation between cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) and the shear wave velocity corrected for overburden stress (Vs1). The discrete-element method was used to simulate a series of undrained stress-controlled cyclic triaxial tests together with shear wave velocity (Vs) measurements. Discrete-element method modelling with various relative densities, confining pressures and micro-parameters was performed under various cyclic stress ratios (CSRs), and the onset of liquefaction was illustrated through both macroscopic and microscopic responses, for example, inferred excess pore-water pressure, mechanical coordination number and redundancy index. The inter-particle friction was identified as the key micro-parameter that governs the liquefaction resistance of granular soils. A micro-scale CRR–Vs1 correlation considering two independent micro-parameters, inter-particle friction and particle shear modulus, was then obtained and further validated with the outcomes from three dynamic centrifuge model tests performed on silica sand no. 8. This study demonstrates that the CRR–Vs1 correlation is particle specific, thus soil specific, and the particle mechanical properties should be included in the Vs-based method for future liquefaction evaluation of granular soils.
Shear wave velocity-based liquefaction resistance evaluation: semi-theoretical considerations and experimental validations

Abstract:Shear wave velocity measurements provide a promising approach to liquefaction resistance evaluation of sandy soils. Although various relationships between shear wave velocity (Vs) and liquefaction resistance (CRR) have been developed, most of them are phenomenological rather than physically-based. In this study, semi-theoretical considerations are given and predict a soil-type specific relationship between CRR and Vs normalized with respect to the minimum void ratio, confining stress and exponent n of Hardin equation. Undrained cyclic triaxial test and dynamic centrifuge model test were performed on sands with Vs measured by bender elements to verify this relationship. Further investigation on similar laboratory studies resulted in a large database of sandy soils, which reveals that CRR is proportional to the 4 power of Vs at statistical level. Comparisons with field case histories show that the present lower-bound CRR-Vs curve is a reliable prediction of liquefaction resistance for most sandy soils, while the accurate evaluation for a specific site requires the development of site-specific liquefaction resistance curve.
A Unified Semiempirical Model for Small-Strain Shear Modulus of Fine-Grained Soils under Hydromechanical Loading

Abstract:In recent years, several empirical and semiempirical relationships have been proposed to predict the small-strain shear modulus of unsaturated fine-grained soils along different hydraulic and mechanical loadings paths. However, a major deficiency of these relationships is the absence of a coupled linkage between hydraulic and mechanical processes that occur in unsaturated conditions. Specifically, the void ratio and effective stress are considered uncoupled, and changes in soil volume are rarely considered when implementing soil water retention curves in these equations. This study aims to address these deficiencies by discussing the coupled effect of hydraulic and mechanical processes in unsaturated soils and presenting a semiempirical model to predict the small-strain shear modulus, Gmax, of unsaturated low plasticity soils subjected to volume and effective stress changes along different mechanical and hydraulic stress paths. Predictions from this model and three other recently proposed models in the literature are compared with experimental results obtained from a series of suction-controlled bender element tests on silty soil specimens to validate the proposed model. The comparison reveals that the model proposed in this study provides more consistent predictions of the small-strain shear modulus during hydraulic hysteresis, as well as different paths of loading and unloading.

Effect of Accumulated Pore Pressure on Shear Modulus Gmax of Saturated Fine Sand During Undrained Cyclic Loading

Abstract:The Hardin equation (1968) is usually adopted to calculate the elastic shear modulus Gmax of the saturated sand during earthquake in the dynamic effective stress analysis of soil structure. But the validity has not been confirmed because of the limitation of test facilities before. The effect of accumulated pore water pressure on Gmax is investigated based on a series of cyclic triaxial tests with piezoceramic bender element system. The test results indicate that the elastic shear modulus Gmax of fine sand can be calculated from the Hardin equation, but the material parameter must be determined by tests; and the elastic shear modulus decreases with the increase of pore water pressure and can also be calculated from the Hardin equation by adopting the actual average effective stress and void ratio during undrained cyclic loading.

Abstract:The small strain shear modulus is one of the most important parameters reflecting soil structure.It is primarily a function of the effective confining stress and void ratio(density),while the dynamic loading history is another important factor.Many experiments have been conducted to investigate the small strain shear modulus of dry sands due to prestraining with prestrain amplitude below 10-3,though the results for the effects on those of saturated soils subjected to a higher amplitude dynamic loading are limited and somewhat contradictory.An attempt is made to study the influence of seismic vibration on the small strain shear modulus of the saturated silt specimens with different relative densities.The shear wave velocity of the specimens are monitored with bender elements equipped on the dynamic triaxial apparatus as soon as the undrained cyclic triaxial testing is interrupted.To ensure the credibility,the reach points of shear wave velocity are examined through the comparison of resonant column tests.The effects of interrupting time at different pore pressure developing stages are also evaluated.It can be observed in the tests that under large amplitude cyclic loading cycles,the small strain shear modulus has a dissimilar degradation or increament changes compared with that under the same static stress without cyclic loading history.This is attributed to the changes in soil microstructure during cyclic loading.The variation modes for the small strain shear modulus are initial specimen condition and cyclic amplitude dependant,decided by the soil particle contact behaviour.

Abstract:Shear experiments on soils have revealed the effects of shear rate, confining pressure, and grain size on the residual shear strength, but their nature is not well understood. To interpret these behaviours, a single dimensionless inertial number I from granular physics is introduced. A linear relationship between coefficient of residual friction μr and the natural logarithm of I was found by analysing geotechnical test data from other literature and helps to resolve the μ(aI)-rheology, which was proved invalid in the quasi-static regime. A method is proposed that introduces two three-dimensional yield criteria for soils to classify the frictional properties between grains in the quasi-static regime. The empirical coefficient of start-up friction is replaced by strength parameters of the soil. When compliant with the Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion, this coefficient is positively correlated with the internal angle of friction but negatively correlated with the Lode angle. Moreover from further analysis, the calculated strength is smallest in the pure tension state, largest in the pure compression state, and intermediate in the pure shearing state. This result is consistent with the properties of compressive endurable and tensive intolerable for natural geomaterials.

Abstract:Small strain shear modulus (G) is an essential parameter for many geotechnical analyses. Most of shallow foundations are constructed in an unsaturated soil and the shear modulus of the unsaturated soil fluctuates because of the precipitation, evaporation, and rising of ground water table. In this paper, a new mathematical model is proposed for the estimation of the shear modulus function (SMF), Gunsat, which defines the relationship between small margin modulus of unsaturated soil and matric suction. In the proposed model, the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) in the form of the degree of saturation is used as the input information. There are additional two parameters named n and C, which can be calibrated with the experimental data, are adopted in the proposed model. The estimated results show good agreement with the experimental data from literature. The proposed method can be used to track the tendency of Gunsat and minimize the data points from the laboratory tests.
