Abstract:This paper conducts research on the fuel consumption test method of heavy-duty commercial vehicles in China The research firstly sorted out the fuel consumption standards and regulations of heavy-duty commercial vehicles in major countries in the world, compared and analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of various test methods, and proposed the overall test scheme including chassis dynamometer test and Simulation modeling. Based on the China cycles, this paper proposed the driving cycle, test conditions and test procedures for the fuel consumption test of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, and compared and analyzed the fuel consumption test results of typical vehicle models under two methods.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

Abstract:Owing to fast-growing vehicle sales, China began in 2001 to develop vehicle energy conservation policies to help solve oil security and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions problems, and it has established a vehicle fuel consumption regulation system to contain vehicle fuel consumption growth. This regulation system includes technical standards, management rules, and fiscal policies. The system covers passenger cars, light-duty commercial vehicles, and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. This paper presents fuel consumption test methods, fuel consumption limits, and fuel consumption labeling standards for these vehicle categories. It also discusses the enforcement of these standards and their associated impacts on oil savings and CO2 emission reductions, identifies problems with the policy implementation from both technical and administrative perspectives, and proposes recommendations to improve the current vehicle fuel consumption regulation system. In particular, we recommend that the central government improve the jurisdictional authority for vehicle energy conservation by clearly clarifying the responsibilities of different ministries, develop a long-term vision and middle-term targets to guide the policy and technology development, and strengthen the policy enforcement monitoring and evaluation.

Abstract:In view of the severe energy conservation and emission reduction, fuel cell vehicles are regarded globally as an important strategic direction of the automotive industry, and technological changes for commercial vehicles with high energy consumption and high emission become urgent. In this article, we analyzes the development trends of the fuel cell vehicle industry in China and abroad, introduces the various measures taken by major countries in the development and promotion of fuel cell vehicles, and summarizes the advantages and challenges faced by China in the development of fuel cell vehicles. This study reveals that the development route of fuel cell vehicles should focus on commercial vehicles based on China’s guiding policies for the fuel cell vehicle industry. Considering the factors restricting the development of fuel cell commercial vehicles, it is recommended to clarify the direction, goals, and priorities of the industry by adopting top-level design and introducing special industrial plans; research and development should be strengthened in key generic technologies of fuel cells to solve major obstacles that restrict the development of the industry, thereby promoting the high-quality development of the fuel cell vehicle industry.

Abstract:With the growth of vehicle ownership, a great quantity of yearly oil import is necessary in China. Because of the energy shortage, people are forced to pay more and more attention to the automobile fuel economy, and government and automotive manufactories are forced to pursue the ways to reduce the vehicle fuel consumption. As the fuel economy has to be evaluated by the measurement of fuel consumption test, the accuracies of these tests are also attracted more and more attention. In this paper, various factors influencing the constant speed fuel consumption are analyzed. Furthermore, a feasible evaluation method of the measurement uncertainty is proposed, and the expanded uncertainty of the test results is calculated using this method.

Abstract:China’s fuel quality standards and fuel supply management have long been an impediment to improved air quality by hindering the progress of vehicle emission control. This paper summarizes the status of China’s fuel quality standards, fuel supply and vehicle emission standards focusing on the major problems of fuel quality management. The mechanism that China uses to establish its fuel quality standards is outlined. The gaming of stakeholders such as regulatory authorities, vehicle and engine manufacturers and the gigantic state-owned oil companies in the development of fuel quality standard formulation and fuel supply is illustrated. Results are presented from testing 59 gasoline samples for sulphur, olefins, aromatics, benzene, and manganese content and from testing 59 diesel samples for sulphur and polyaromatic hydrocarbons collected across the country from 2010 to 2011. This paper also provides key policy suggestions to improve future fuel quality in China. China should improve fuel quality through the application of policy measures such as adjusting the fuel quality standard formulation process, introducing competition and enforcing the transition period for improved fuel introduction, unifying on-road diesel and non-road diesel fuel quality standards, and pay attention to issues like fuel detergent, methanol addition and evaporative emissions.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of automotive industry,a stricter standard of average fuel consumption for a passenger car(third-phase fuel consumption standard) will be implemented in China.It is basically intended to address the conflict between energy supply and demand,to reduce overall fuel-consumption amount of domestic vehicles,and to narrow the gap between China and other countries as regards average fuel-consumption.The limits of third-phase fuel consumption standard and concrete management measures are first investigated in this article,including applicable scope,fuel-consumption target value,evaluation method,accounting area,accounting body and accounting method,as well as ultimate goal.And then the highlights and existing problems are further analyzed with regard to regulations of third-phase fuel consumption.Finally,suggestions are made for passenger-car manufacturers in China.

Abstract:Fuel economy is an important indicator to evaluate vehicle performance as it is directly associated with fuel costs. This paper introduces a method to evaluate the fuel economy of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). A fuel cell truck (FCT) was tested under a 40 km/h constant speed and a China heavy-duty commercial vehicle test cycle-heavy truck (CHTC-HT) driving cycle scenarios to determine the FCV energy consumption, driving range, and hydrogen emissions in different driving cycles and analyze the influences of these driving cycles on fuel economy evaluation. The test results demonstrated that compared with its performance under the 40 km/h constant speed scenario, when the FCT was tested under the CHTC-HT scenario, the electricity consumption per 100 km and the hydrogen consumption per 100 km were increased by 60.35% and 52.02%, respectively; the driving range was reduced by 43.49%; the hydrogen emission per 100 km rose by 171.17%, and the hydrogen emission rate grew by 26.96%.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to simulate transient fuel consumption and gas emissions of a heavy duty diesel vehicle in the real world.A new simulation methodology for heavy duty diesel vehicles was developed based on the principles of power demand and transmission system in real world systems.To validate the methodology,a heavy duty diesel bus was selected to be tested on its business route by using an on-board emission measurement system.The fuel economy was 16.38 L·100 km-1.NOx,CO and THC emission factors reached 4.44,3.35,and 1.96 g·km-1,respectively,and the simulated results were generally in accord with the test data.The fuel and emission factors were 1.06 times the test results.The proportions of driving condition under idling,NOx control zone and other zones of the engine map were 32.6%,7.1% and 60.4%.If we increase the 10t load or speed up the velocity by 1.5 times,the engine load in the NOx control zone will increase to 18.4% and 18.8%,and the fuel and emission level will be 1.5 ～ 1.7 times or 1.6 ～ 1.8 times the base case.While integrating these two scenarios,the vehicle will be operated under a high stress load.The share of driving conditions under the NOx control zone will be 33.9%,and the fuel and emission level will increase to 2.5 ～ 3.0 times correspondingly.The simulation methodology can be utilized to analyze the second-by-second energy consumption and exhaust gas emissions for heavy duty diesel vehicles in the real world.

Abstract:The carbon balance method is an efficient method to calculate the fuel consumption. This paper discuss two me- thods, the carbon balance and fuel consumption analyzer, to measure the fuel consumption for different vehicles. On the base of measuring the fuel consumption of variant-mode and constant-driving speed. The test results show that the carbon balance method can be used to substitute fuel consumption analyzer for measuring fuel consumption. Moreover, it analyzes the reason of test tolerance and how to improve the measuring response.

Abstract:In order to ensure the uniformity of the measurement and evaluation of fuel consumption of vehicle constant-speed road test, the road test load and engine load of vehicle should be corrected to reference state. Given this, this paper introduces four correction methods, gets four formulas, and the fourth correction method is recommended. Because this method can correct not only the road-test load but also the capacity of engine load and accessories load. At the same time, it analyzes the deviation between the first three correction methods and the fourth one.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of China's vehicle ownership, energy consumption and emissions from passenger vehicles become a major concern. The fuel consumption standards for passenger vehicles play an essential role in addressing such issues. In this study, four most important aspects of China's fuel consumption standards, i.e., evaluation standard, constraint form, basic curb weight and the slope, are investigated. By establishing the database comprising the major characteristics of 2010-2015 new vehicles, the rationale of each aspect and the influences on China's vehicle market and manufacture are analyzed. The results indicate that the evaluation standard and constraint form have strong impacts on the motivation of manipulation and the stress of achieving the standard targets. On the other hand, the basic curb weight and the slope have strong impacts on the change of curb weight and technology friendliness of lightweighting.
Impacts of the New Worldwide Light-Duty Test Procedure on Technology Effectiveness and China’s Passenger Vehicle Fuel Consumption Regulations

Abstract:As a main measure to promote the development of China’s energy–saving and new energy vehicles, the Phase V fuel consumption regulation is dramatically different from the past four phases, especially in the test procedure, moving from the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) to the worldwide harmonized light duty test cycle (WLTC) and corresponding test procedure (WLTP). The switch of test procedure will not only affect the effectiveness of technologies but also change the fuel consumption target of the industry. However, few studies have systematically investigated the impacts of the new WLTP on the Chinese market. This study establishes a “technology–vehicle–fleet” bottom–up framework to estimate the impacts of test procedure switching on technology effectiveness and regulation stringency. The results show that due to the WLTP being closer to the real driving condition and more stringent, almost all baseline vehicles in the WLTP have higher fuel consumption than that in the NEDC, and diesel vehicles are slightly more impacted than gasoline vehicles. In addition, the impacts are increased with the strengthening of electrification, where the fuel consumption of plug–in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs) in the WLTP are about 6% higher than that in the NEDC. Engine technologies that gain higher effects in low load conditions, such as turbocharging and downsizing, fuel stratified injection (FSI), lean–burn, and variable valve timing (VVT), are faced with deterioration in the WLTP. Among these, the effect of turbocharging and downsizing shows a maximum decline of 8.5%. The variable compression ratio (VCR) and stoichiometric gasoline direct injection (SGDI) are among the few technologies that benefited from procedure switching, with an average improvement of 1.6% and 0.2% respectively. Except for multi–speed transmissions, which have improvement effects in the WLTP, all automatic transmissions are faced with decreases. From the perspective of the whole fleet and national regulation target, the average fuel consumption in the WLTP will increase by about 7.5% in 2025 compared to 4 L/100 km in the NEDC. According to the current planning of the Chinese government, the fuel consumption target of Phase V is set at 4.6 L/100 km in 2025, which is equivalent to loosening the stringency by 0.3 L/100 km. In Phase VI, the target of 3.2 L/100 km is maintained, which is 30.4% stricter than that of Phase V, and the annual compound tightening rate reaches 7.5%. This means that automakers need to launch their product planning as soon as possible and expand the technology bandwidth to comply with the Phase VI fuel consumption regulation, and the government should evaluate the technical feasibility before determining the evaluation methods and targets of the next phase.

Influence of Test Cycle and Fuel Property on Fuel Consumption and Exhaust Emissions of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

Abstract:In this study, dynamometer engine tests were conducted to investigate the impact of test cycle and fuel type on fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of a heavy-duty diesel engine. This study presented novel approaches by utilizing comprehensive statistical analysis to assess these impacts on particulate matter (PM), PM-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and multiple gaseous pollutants. Four types of fuels—two conventional diesels (X and Y) and each with 5% blend of biodiesel—were used under European Transient Cycle (ETC) and European Stationary Cycle (ESC). There were statistically significant higher fuel consumption and emission rates (by 9–73%) under ETC than ESC due to more occurrences of lower engine speeds and loads under ESC, and X fuels had higher emission rates of PM and carbon dioxides ([CO2]; 2.1–13%) but lower rates of hydrocarbons ([THC]; 44%) attributed to higher cetane number, sulfur contents and boiling points. Compared with conventional diesel, biodiesel blend had slightly lower emission rates of PM, CO, and NOX (1.7–6.6%) but higher fuel consumption (1%) and CO2 and THC emission rates (0.9–2.1%). The results of this study contributed to the limited datasets on the interactive effects of test cycle with fuel property on diesel vehicle exhaust emissions.

Abstract:The construction of ecological civilization is attracting more and more attention. Fuel consumption has greater research value as an important factor in the field of environmental protection and energy saving. Existing analysis about the influence factors of fuel consumption is mostly finished in the 1990s and the beginning of this century, with experiment vehicles and highway at that time, so they may not be suitable for the present. Direct measurement of fuel consumption is finished with actual transportation vehicles in highway and nature state of driving. Analysing the relationship between fuel consumption and speed, longitudinal slope and other main influence factors, put forward measures in highway design, driving speed and other parts to reduce fuel consumption. It is significant for realize energy conservation and environmental protection in traffic.

Abstract:Owing to increasingly strict emission regulation, gasoline properties not only satisfy the needs of high performance for the engine, but also attain the requirement of vehicles exhaust control. The gasoline from gas stations around China is sampled and its properties are analyzed. The distribution of gasoline quality in different zones is listed. At the same time, the difference of properties between domestic and oversea gasoline is compared. After establishing the emission model of the engine, the reference value of vehicle emissions in different zones is obtained. At last, some measurements are proposed to reduce the emissions: improving gasoline quality and controlling the related parameters for engine according to the distribution of gasoline properties.

Traditional fuels such as oil not only have the problem of emission pollution, but also have the problem of limited quantity and easy to be influenced by political factors. Therefore, finding suitable alternative fuels is an important guarantee to ensure the sustainable development of people's lives and society. In recent years, some new fuels have been developed, such as biomass energy, hydrogen fuel, methanol, etc. The development and use of these alternative fuels can reduce the impact of traditional fuels on the environment and reduce dependence on fossil energy. However, the research and use of alternative fuels also presents a series of problems, such as cost, energy density, sustainability, and so on. Therefore, the performance, feasibility, advantages and disadvantages of alternative fuels need to be fully studied and evaluated. On the basis of existing research, this paper will conduct an in-depth discussion from the aspects of combustion characteristics, emission characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of alternative fuels, so as to provide certain theoretical support and practical experience for the research and application of alternative fuels, and promote the development and application of alternative fuel technology.

Abstract:Energy conservation and emissions reduction have been the focus of the road transport sector due to its energy-intensive and air pollution-intensive nature. It also embodies the imprints of human technological progress. This paper compares the energy consumption of the road transport sector in China and OECD countries. We used time series and panel data, co-integration analysis, error correction model and dynamic model to study the impacts of the major influencing factors such as income, income structure, urbanization, price, and technological advancement on gasoline and diesel consumption in road transport. Overall, China's fuel consumption is influenced mainly by investment, government expenditure and demographic changes such as urbanization, while the fuel consumption of OECD countries is mainly driven by household final consumption expenditure. In the short run and from a dynamic perspective, China's fuel consumption is less influenced by its historical consumption than current influencing factors, while that of OECD countries is more affected by historical fuel consumption. Based on the analysis and findings of this study, some policy implications are proposed.
Simulation and Experimental Comparison of Fuel Consumption for a Heavy-duty Diesel Vehicle

Abstract:In this paper, chassis dynamometer (CD), Engine-In-the-Loop (EIL) methodology and Vehicle Energy Consumption Calculation Tool (VECTO) were used to study the fuel consumption characteristics of a heavy-duty truck at Chinese version of the World Harmonized Vehicle Cycle (C-WTVC). The results of the vehicle speed followability show that the average of absolute values of the vehicle velocity deviations between the three methods and C-WTVC regulation are 0.916, 0.883 and 0.733 km/h, respectively. The CD test has the largest deviation, and the VECTO simulation has the smallest deviation. The total distance and total cycle power of the three methods are not much different. However, the power of urban and motorway have large difference. The weighted fuel consumption of C-WTVC of CD test, EIL test and VECTO simulation are 14.93, 15.17 and 16.2 L/100km respectively. Compared with CD test, the EIL test fuel consumption is 1.61% higher, and the VECTO simulation fuel consumption is S.51% higher.
