Abstract:The article discusses responsive sentences of negative type intonation inquisitive sentences that has to be answered with yes or no answers. The article divides this kind of inquisitive sentences into repetitive inquisitive sentences and follow-up inquisitive sentences. The follow-up inquisitive sentences can be further divided into three types according to whether the inquisitive sentences are based on fact, conjunction or requiring confirmation. Different purposes of asking a question result in the different ways, a question is structured and thus constrained the response to be either positive or negative. The psychology and expectations of the inquisitor as reflected in the questions asked also require the answerer whether to give only a yes or no answer .

Abstract:This paper reports the findings of three experiments investigating children's emerging knowledge of the semantics of information-seeking questions and declarative statements in Mandarin Chinese. Mandarin is particularly revealing about the semantic relationship between questions and statements, because it is a wh-in-situ language where question words appear in the same surface syntactic position in both questions and statements. The non-interrogative meanings that Mandarin-speaking children assign to question words lend weight to a unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions, including Free Choice Expressions, Negative Polarity Items, and disjunction words. When Mandarin question words appear in statements, children interpret them to be the semantic equivalents of existential expressions. The findings, therefore, support the unified approach to the semantics of existential expressions.

Abstract:In sentences with internal negation, Free Choice Inferences (FCIs) are canceled (Chierchia, 2013). The present study investigated the possibility that FCIs are negated, not canceled, by external negation. In previous research, both Mandarin-speaking children and adults were found to license FCIs in affirmative sentences with a modal verb and the disjunction word huozhe 'or' (Zhou et al., 2013). The present study contrasted internal versus external negation in sentences that contained all the ingredients needed to license FCIs. Four experiments were conducted using the Truth Value Judgment Task (Crain and Thornton, 1998). Experiment 1 tested Mandarin-speaking children and adults using sentences with internal negation, a modal verb and disjunction. As expected, children did not license FCIs; rather, they assigned a 'neither' interpretation to disjunction. Also as expected, adults analyzed disjunction as taking scope over internal negation, yielding a 'not both' interpretation (Jing et al., 2005). Experiment 1 provided the benchmarks for sentences with external negation in Experiments 2-4. Experiment 2 confirmed that English-speaking adults distinguish between internal and external negation in sentences with disjunction. In Experiment 3, external negation was conveyed by the focus adverb zhiyou 'only'. External negation eliminated the between-group differences observed in Experiment 1. Both children and adults analyzed external negation as taking scope over disjunction. Experiment 4 tested the effect of external negation on the computation of FCIs. The test sentences only differed from Experiment 1 by using external negation, rather than internal negation. Again, children and adults interpreted the test sentences in the same way. Most importantly, in contrast to Experiment 1 (with internal negation), both groups analyzed external negation as negating, rather than canceling, FCIs. The findings support the distinction between internal and external negation.

Abstract:The present study used a Truth Value Judgment Task to investigate whether changes in sentence structure lead to corresponding changes in the assignment of scope relations by Mandarin-speaking children and adults. In one condition, participants were presented with ordinary negative sentences containing disjunction; this condition was designed to verify the existing claim that disjunction is a positive polarity item for adult speakers of Mandarin, but not for child speakers. In a second condition, participants were presented with negative sentences where the disjunction phrase was preposed from object position; this condition was designed to examine the extent to which changes in sentence structure can result in changes in scope assignments to negated disjunctions. The results indicate that the preposed disjunction phrase undergoes reconstruction for children, whereas reconstruction is blocked for adults. This finding also suggests that Mandarin-speaking children and adults exhibit different scope preferences for negated disjunctions, regardless of where the disjunction phrase appears in the surface syntax.

Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:This paper focuses on “overall negative” in Chinese, which many scholars admit that negating the unit “yi+quanitity+noun” implies an overall negative, but the paper argues that it is not necessarily so and the syntactic type, pragmatic number and negative verbs together should be taken into account. Based on this, the paper presents 12 pragmatic reasoning modes and the strength continuum of “overall negative” resulted from the different modes.

Abstract:In Chinese,speech acts are possible to cause a sentence with interrogative subordinate object clause to change from a declarative or imperative sentence in syntax and semantics into an interrogative sentence,i.e.,a non-prototypical interrogative. Four types of non-prototypical interrogatives have been summed up in this paper based on different types of speech acts. All these non-prototypical interrogatives exclude interrogative markers in their main clauses,but could include the de-interrogative markers. They also have deferent degrees of interrogative mood. Some specific discourse markers in Chinese have the same functions in similar structures. The degrees of interrogative mood of these non-prototypical interrogatives are determined by six factors from the view of illocutionary force,adjacency and discourse markers.

Abstract:When verbs about wish are followed by a negative clause, the positive attitude within these verbs is often suppressed. The sentence cannot express a “pure” wish, but rather express concern or curse. In interactive communication, negation always introduces a corresponding positive position into the dialogue. The introduction and emphasis on the possibility of negative things violates the Pollyanna principle; hence, breaks “the maxim of quantity”; and finally makes the sentence imply concern and even curse.
A survey on the semantics of sequential patterns with negation

Abstract:A sequential pattern with negation, or negative sequential pattern, takes the form of a sequential pattern for which the negation symbol may be used in front of some of the pattern's itemsets. Intuitively, such a pattern occurs in a sequence if negated itemsets are absent in the sequence. Recent work has shown that different semantics can be attributed to these pattern forms, and that state-of-the-art algorithms do not extract the same sets of patterns. This raises the important question of the interpretability of sequential pattern with negation. In this study, our focus is on exploring how potential users perceive negation in sequential patterns. Our aim is to determine whether specific semantics are more "intuitive" than others and whether these align with the semantics employed by one or more state-of-the-art algorithms. To achieve this, we designed a questionnaire to reveal the semantics' intuition of each user. This article presents both the design of the questionnaire and an in-depth analysis of the 124 responses obtained. The outcomes indicate that two of the semantics are predominantly intuitive; however, neither of them aligns with the semantics of the primary state-of-the-art algorithms. As a result, we provide recommendations to account for this disparity in the conclusions drawn.

Abstract:The present paper examines how English native speakers produce scopally ambiguous sentences and how they make use of gestures and prosody for disambiguation. As a case in point, the participants in the present study produced the English negative quantifiers. They appear in two different positions as (1) The election of no candidate was a surprise (a: 'for those elected, none of them was a surprise'; b: 'no candidate was elected, and that was a surprise') and (2) no candidate's election was a surprise (a: 'for those elected, none of them was a surprise'; b: # 'no candidate was elected, and that was a surprise.' We were able to investigate the gesture production and the prosodic patterns of the positional effects (i.e., a-interpretation is available at two different positions in 1 and 2) and the interpretation effects (i.e., two different interpretations are available in the same position in 1). We discovered that the participants tended to launch more head shakes in the (a) interpretation despites the different positions, but more head nod/beat in the (b) interpretation. While there is not a difference in prosody of no in (a) and (b) interpretation in (1), there are pitch and durational differences between (a) interpretations in (1) and (2). This study points out the abstract similarities across languages such as Catalan and Spanish (Prieto et al. in Lingua 131:136-150, 2013. 10.1016/j.lingua.2013.02.008; Tubau et al. in Linguist Rev 32(1):115-142, 2015. 10.1515/tlr-2014-0016) in the gestural movements, and the meaning is crucial for gesture patterns. We emphasize that gesture patterns disambiguate ambiguous interpretation when prosody cannot do so.

Abstract:There are lots of negative sentences in both Japanese and Chinese, which are varing from meanings and phrasings. Especially the negative sentences always express complex relationships in Chinese language. So it is easy to make ambiguity when translating Japanese into Chinese. At present, it's very common that the translation softwares sold on the market make errors due to wrong translation of the negative sentences. This paper investigates the difference of existential negative sentences in Chinese and Japanese, then formulates translation rules and comes up with several translation ways for existential negative sentences based on characteristics of Japanese sentences, the corresponding attributes of the terms, the phrasings of Chinese sentences and so on. When testing on 150 negative sentences, the experiment confirms the effectiveness of the method introduced in the paper.
A DG Account of the Descriptive and Resultative De-Constructions in Chinese.

Abstract:This contribution examines the descriptive and resultative de-constructions in Mandarin Chinese, e.g. Wǒ pǎo-de hěn kuai ‘I run very fast’. There is a longstanding debate about this construction. The primary point of dispute concerns the main predicate: Is the first predicate the root of the sentence, i.e. pǎo-de ‘run’, or is the second predicate the root, i.e. kuai ‘fast’? We demonstrate here that from a dependency grammar (DG) perspective, the second predicate should be taken as the root. A number of diagnostics support this conclusion: 1) yes/no-questions with ma, 2) position of the negation bu, 3) omission, 4) placement of the adverb yě ‘also’, 5) ne-questions, and 6) modal insertion. The conclusion is important for the development of DG as applied to the syntax of Mandarin, since many basic questions about Mandarin sentence structure have not yet been examined from a DG perspective.

Abstract:The goal of this article is to provide a principled account of the semantic contribution of the so-called “expletive” negation, as it occurs in negative exclamatives. This type of negation differs from canonical negation in that it does not contribute its canonical meaning as a propositional operator, occurs higher in the syntactic structure of the clause, does not license negative polarity items, and expresses a bias towards the opposite polarity. In this article, we show that these properties are also found in negative rhetorical questions. We propose that exclamatives, as well as rhetorical questions, denote sets of propositions structured into Boolean algebras, with the negation imposing an order of informativity upon such structures.

Abstract:Modality and negation, as two important linguistic features used to realise subjectivity, have been investigated within various disciplines, such as logic, linguistics and philosophy, and law. The interaction between modality and negation, as a relatively new and undeveloped domain, has however not been paid due attention in scholarship. This corpus-based study investigates three aspects of their interaction: the differentiation of the deontic value by negation, the categorization of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation via negation, and distribution patterns of deontic modality, especially distribution patterns of the negation of modality, in Hong Kong legislation. This study shows that negation is a powerful linguistic mechanism not only for determining the nature and functions of modality, but also for determining the value of modality. This study also reveals that negation helps us to investigate the distribution of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation and hence revisit the legal framework in Hong Kong. A study taking into account the discursive and professional aspects of the interaction between deontic modality and negation will provide a theoretical basis for the natural language processing of modality and negation in legislation and also offer important implications for the study of negation and modality in general contexts.

Abstract:Negation and spatial experiences are basic to human cognition. While both should be indispensable to the exploration of each other, the relationship between them has seldom been touched upon. This study takes the Chinese negative marker mei ( you ) as a case study by investigating its evolutionary path in relation to spatial cognition. Drawing on corpus-based data across three historical stages before Modern Chinese, the study yields the following findings. First, the original meaning of mei involves dynamic spatial movement, which can extend to abstract domains. Second, rich concrete meanings of mei trigger semantic schematization at the second stage, spatial cognition playing a fundamental role. Third, the negative marker use of mei combines with you at the third stage, which is attributed to the fact that the spatial existence of you fits with the semantic component of existence in mei . The significance of the study lies in three aspects: first, the division of historical stages accords with the key turning points in the evolution of Chinese; second, the exploration follows a diachronic development, instead of being based merely on static performance; and third, this perspective sheds light on the role of spatial cognition in the conceptualization of negation in both Chinese and other languages.

The affirmative inclination of the shì-bù-shì + VP question and its typological significance

Abstract:It is found in this paper that the shi-bu-shi + VP question, different from other affirmative-negative questions, has, semantically, obvious affirmative inclination. A comparison between the shi-bu-shi + VP question and other affirmative-negative question, and the yes-no question with ba at the end in the degree of doubt shows that the shi-bu-shi + VP question is one that is consultative in nature. An analysis was made to find the pragmatic categories of this formula and the differences in the degree of doubt of the subcategories. Finally we made a chronological investigation of this formula and concluded it has a twofold origin: the contraction of shi + VP+ bu-shi and the transposition of VP +shi-bu-shi. The reason for this development lies in the fact that this formula is cognitively superior to the original ones, or probably in the influence of the dialectical formula V + bu + VO in the South. This phenomenon is significant in linguistic typology.
