Abstract:Anti-perovskite type Li2OHCl was previously studied as a solid-state Li+ conductor. Here, we report that the Li2OHCl can be electrolyzed at 3.3 V or 4.0 V, with the creation of O-2/HCl gases and the release of 2 equiv. Li+ via two different decomposition routes, depending on the acidity of electrolyte. In the electrolyte with trace acid, the Li2OHCl is oxidized at a constant voltage of 3.3 V. In neutral electrolyte, the oxidization of Li2OHCl starts at 4.0 V, but the produced HCl will increase the acidity of electrolyte and lead to a voltage drop to 3.3 V for the electrolysis of Li2OHCl. The electrolysis of Li2OHCl delivers a lithium releasing capacity as high as 810 mAh g(-1), with an equivalent Li-deposition or Li-intercalation on anode, making it a promising candidate as a Li reservoir for prelithiation of anode. Using Li2OHCl as the lithium source, silicon-carbon (Si@C) composite anode can be effectively prelithiated. The full cells composed of LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode and prelithiated Si@C anode exhibited increased capacities with the increment of prelithiation dosages.

Abstract:Combining the first-principles calculation and AIMD simulation on the promising Li2OHCl solid electrolyte material.Li2OHCl presents a high interfacial stability and ionic conductivity for ASSLIBs.The modelling can be used to accelerate discovery of solid electrolyte materials.Lithium-rich antiperovskites are promising solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries because of their high structural tolerance and good formability. However, the experimentally reported proton-free Li3OCl is plagued by its inferior interfacial compatibility and harsh synthesis conditions. In contrast, Li2OHCl is a thermodynamically favored phases and is easier to achieve than Li3OCl. Due to the proton inside this material, it exhibits interesting lithium diffusion mechanisms. Herein, we present a systematic investigation of the ionic transport, phase stability, and electrochemical-chemical stability of Li2OHCl using first-principles calculations. Our results indicate that Li2OHCl is thermodynamically metastable and is an electronic insulator. The wide electrochemical stability window and high chemical stability of Li2OHCl against various electrodes are confirmed. The charged defects are the dominant conduction mechanism for Li-transport, with a low energy barrier of ∼0.50 eV. The Li-ion conductivity estimated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations is about 1.3×10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature. This work identifies the origin of the high interfacial stability and ionic conductivity of Li2OHCl, which can further lead to the design of such as a cathode coating. Abstract:The insolubility of Cl− ions has hindered deployment of Cl0/−1 anionic redox in organic lithium batteries over the last century. High concentrations of Cl ions are developed for the first time based on the eutectic effect by mixing a series of N-/P-centered chloride salts with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide. Our designed electrolytes exhibit broader adaptability and potential applications where a Li anode and commercial separators can be directly utilized, providing a new platform for the development of Li-Cl2 batteries.

Abstract:LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 is a promising electrolyte used for Li metal batteries. At room and low temperature, a stable solid electrolyte interface film can be formed in LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 to achieve favorable protection for Li metal anodes. Here, Li|Cu cells with SO 2 -based inorganic electrolyte (LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 ) display higher average coulombic efficiency and more excellent cycling stability compared with a conventional organic electrolyte. Moreover, at 0.5 mA cm −2 , the coulombic efficiency of Li|Cu cells with LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 electrolyte can reach 95% at − 20 °C, while the coulombic efficiency of the conventional organic electrolyte at − 20 °C is only about 79%. Furthermore, LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 electrolyte is non-combustible. Based on all the experimental results, LiAlCl 4 ·3SO 2 is a promising electrolyte candidate for safe Li metal batteries. Abstract:Abstract Li-ion-conducting chloride solid electrolytes receive considerable attention due to their physicochemical characteristics such as high ionic conductivity, deformability and oxidative stability. However, the raw materials are expensive, and large-scale use of this class of inorganic superionic conductors seems unlikely. Here, a cost-effective chloride solid electrolyte, Li 2 ZrCl 6 , is reported. Its raw materials are several orders of magnitude cheaper than those for the state-of-the-art chloride solid electrolytes, but high ionic conductivity (0.81 mS cm –1 at room temperature), deformability, and compatibility with 4V-class cathodes are still simultaneously achieved in Li 2 ZrCl 6 . Moreover, Li 2 ZrCl 6 demonstrates a humidity tolerance with no sign of moisture uptake or conductivity degradation after exposure to an atmosphere with 5% relative humidity. By combining Li 2 ZrCl 6 with the Li-In anode and the single-crystal LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 cathode, we report a room-temperature all-solid-state cell with a stable specific capacity of about 150 mAh g –1 for 200 cycles at 200 mA g –1 .

Abstract:Halide electrolytes in solid-state batteries with excellent oxidative stability and high ionic conductivity have been well reported recently. However, the high-cost rare-earth elements and long duration of high-rotation milling procure are the major obstacles. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the low cost Li2.25Zr0.75Fe0.25Cl6 electrolyte consisting of abundant elements with comparable Li-ion conductivity in a short milling duration of 4 h. Phase transition of the annealed sample was also carefully investigated. LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li2.25Zr0.75Fe0.25Cl6/Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5/In-Li batteries using different halide electrolytes were constructed and cycled at different voltage windows. Solid-state battery using Li2.25Zr0.75Fe0.25Cl6 electrolyte obtained from long milling duration delivers higher discharge capacities and superior capacity retention than shorter milling time between 3.0 and 4.3 V. It delivers much higher discharge capacity when cycled at elevated temperature (60 °C) and suffers fast capacity degradation when the upper cut-off voltage increases to 4.5 V at the same current density. This work provides an efficiency synthesis strategy for halide solid electrolyte and studies its applications in all-solid-state batteries in a wide temperature range.

Wet Chemistry Route to Li3InCl6: Microstructural Control Render High Ionic Conductivity and Enhanced All-Solid-State Battery Performance

Abstract:Thanks to superionic conductivity and compatibility with >4 V cathodes, halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have elicited tremendous interest for application in all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). Many compositions based on groups 3, 13, and divalent metals, and substituted stoichiometries have been explored, some displaying requisite properties, but the Li+ conductivity still falls short of theoretical predictions and appealing sulfide-type SEs. While controlling microstructural characteristics, namely grain boundary effects and microstrain, can boost ionic conductivity, they have rarely been considered. Moving away from the standard solid-state route, here a scalable and facile wet chemical approach for obtaining highly conductive (>2 mS cm-1) Li3InCl6 is presented, and it is shown that aprotic solvents can reduce grain boundaries and microstrain, leading to very high ionic conductivity of over 4 mS cm-1 (at 22 °C). Minimized grain boundary area renders improved moisture stability and enhances solid-solid interfacial contact, leading to excellent LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2-based full-cell performance, exemplified by stable room temperature (22 °C) cycling at a 0.2 C rate with 155 mAh g-1 capacity and 85% retention after 1000 cycles at 60 °C with a high 99.75% Coulombic efficiency. The findings showcase the viability of the aprotic solvent-mediated route for producing high-quality Li3InCl6 for all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet-type oxide has become a promising inorganic electrolyte for solid-state lithium-ion batteries due to its high ionic conductivity and good chemical stability with the lithium metal. However, the poor wettability of LLZO garnet-type oxide with lithium metal and its incompact structure have impeded their extensive applications in solid-state lithium-ion batteries. Herein, Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) particles were embedded in the amorphous Li3OCl to form an integrated composite electrolyte (LLZTO-2wt.% Li3OCl) with compact and stable structure at 350 °C, which presents high ionic conductivity (2.27 × 10−4 S cm−1), low interfacial resistance and high electrochemical stability (up to 10 V vs. Li/Li+) at room temperature. The amorphous Li3OCl acting as a binder, filler and bridge promotes the formation of an integrated composite electrolyte and continuous ionic conductive network among LLZTO particles. Furthermore, the Li3OCl with excellent affinity to lithium metal in-situ reacts with the lithium metal to form a stable and dense interfacial layer, which greatly decreases the interfacial resistance between the composite electrolyte and lithium metal (from 1850 to 90 Ω cm2). The interfacial layer allied compact composite electrolyte also effectively suppresses the lithium dendrite growth during lithium plating-striping. The symmetrical Li/LLZTO-2wt.% Li3OCl/Li cell can stably cycle 1000 h without short circuit. The stable specific capacity of solid-state LiFePO4/LLZTO-2wt.% Li3OCl/Li battery is as high as 157.5 mAh g−1 and 85.7 mAh g−1 at 0.05 C and 0.5 C, respectively. Combining the garnet-type electrolyte with amorphous Li3OCl is a promising way to develop the compact garnet-type electrolyte at low temperature for solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Application of halide electrolytes including Li3InCl6 in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries is still challenging due to the instability with lithium metal and limited ionic conductivity compared with liquid electrolytes and some sulfides. Here, through Zr substitution, a novel Li2.9In0.9Zr0.1Cl6 electrolyte is synthesized through the ball milling and subsequent annealing process. The ionic conductivity of Li2.9In0.9Zr0.1Cl6 (1.54 mS cm(-1) at 20 degrees C) is nearly double that of original Li3InCl6 (0.88 mS cm(-1) at 20 degrees C). Such conductivity enhancement is mainly attributed to the enlarged interplanar spacing and lattice volume, improved concentration of lithiumion vacancies created by introducing higher-valence Zr4+, and the change of the preferred orientation from the (001) plane to the (131) plane. As a result, the allsolid-state lithium-metal batteries (ASSLMBs) assembled with the Li2.9In0.9Zr0.1Cl6 electrolyte also demonstrate a higher charge/discharge capacity, better cycle stability, and rate performance during cycling without an extra lithium source at the anode side.

Abstract:Halide electrolytes are rising stars among inorganic solid-state electrolytes due to their high ionic conductivity and good compatibility with high-voltage electrodes. However, their traditional synthesis methods including ball-milling annealing are usually energy-intensive and time-consuming compared with liquid-mediated routes. What's more, the only method in aqueous solution is not perfect considering detrimental effect of trace water for battery performances. Here, we propose a novel ethanol-mediated synthesis route for superionic Li3InCl6 electrolyte via energy-friendly dissolution and post-treatment. The organics in ethanol-mediated precursor disappear in form of light gas during post-treatment. And Li3InCl6 with best thermal stability and ionic conductivity (0.79 mS cm-1, 20 °C) can be successfully prepared after postheating for 3 h at 200 °C. Besides, it is also found that the ionic conductivity of Li3InCl6 is positively correlated with peak intensity ratio of (131) plane/(001) plane since crystal plane and preferred orientation can directly affect polyhedrons through which lithium ions migrate in crystalline conductors. The assembled LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2/Li3InCl6/Li10GeP2S12/Li-In cell presents high initial charge capacity of 174.8 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C and a good rate performance of 122.9 mAh g-1 at 1 C. Especially, the retention rate of charge capacity can reach 94.8% after 200 cycles. The ethanol-mediated synthesized Li3InCl6 is a novel promising electrolyte which can be coupled with high-voltage cathode for the application of all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

Abstract:Li2OHX (X = Cl or Br) with an antiperovskite structure possess the advantages of low melting point, low cost, and ease of scaling-up, which show great promise for applications in all-solid-state Li metal batteries (ASSLMBs). However, Li-ion transport mechanisms in Li2OHX are still debated and the influence of H on the electrochemical performance of Li2OHX is yet to be explored. Herein, combining the theoretical calculations and experimental measurements, it is found that H affects Li-ion transport, crystal stability, electrochemical stability, and electronic conductivity of Li2OHX. Compared with H-free Li3OCl, although H helps to generate vacancy-like defects, the electrostatic repulsive force between H and Li-ion leads to an increase in both the activation energy and the diffusion length (space compensation effect), resulting in special Li ion transport trajectories along the Li-O plane. Decreasing H content reduces the electronic conductivity and enhances the reduction-resistant ability of Li2OHX, promoting the cycling stability and rate performance of Li divide Li2OHX divide Li symmetric cells and the ASSLMBs. This work delivers a new insight into the role of H in antiperovskite Li2OHX and can serve as guidance for solid electrolyte design.
Achieving superior ionic conductivity of Li6PS5I via introducing LiCl

Abstract:Li6PS5I electrolyte shows significant potential as solid electrolytes due to its low cost and high stability. However, the poor room temperature Li-ion conductivity (10−6 S/cm) limits its applications in solid-state batteries. This work aims to increase the conductivity of Li6PS5I by introducing LiCl in the structure using high-rotation mechanical milling. Structure analysis confirms that a minor dopant of Cl− can form a single-phase of Li6PS5ClxI1-x argyrodite electrolytes, while a large doping amount yields a mixture of the Li6PS5I and Li6PS5Cl phases. The modified electrolytes with “composition” Li6PS5Cl0.7I0.3 show the highest room temperature Li-ion conductivity among the milled and sintered sample, 7.37 × 10−4 and 2.33 × 10−3 S/cm, both of which are much higher than the conductivity of pristine Li6PS5I. Solid-state batteries using the above solid electrolytes combined with LiNbO3-coated LiNi0.7Mn0.2Co0.1O2 cathode and LiIn anode display excellent electrochemical performances. The battery using annealed Li6PS5Cl0.7I0.3 electrolyte delivers improved discharge capacities and extended cycling performances at different operating temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy to design high conductivity Li6PS5I-based solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries.

Abstract:A LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2)-NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2) binary inorganic electrolyte was prepared by using NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2) as the functional additive and mixing with LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2). The obtained LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2)-NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2) not only has good non-flammability but also exhibits improved electrochemical performance for Li-metal batteries. With the addition of NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2), the fabricated Li/Cu cells using mixed inorganic electrolyte display higher average coulombic efficiency and more excellent cycling stability. Through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization, it is demonstrated that the surficial morphology of Li-deposited layer is smoother in LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2)-NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2) binary electrolyte system than pure LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2). Furthermore, the fabricated Li/graphite cells using LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2)-NaAlCl4 center dot 2SO(2) binary electrolyte also show higher specific capacity and better cycling stability than using pure LiAlCl4 center dot 3SO(2) electrolyte as well as the conventional organic electrolyte (1 M LiPF6 in ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate mixed solvent with 1:1 in volume).
