Abstract:˖Ultrasonic guided wave technology shows a good prospect in the long distance and large-scale structure of the non-destructive testing and health monitoring, thanks to its advantages such as single-ended excitation, long propagation distance, 100% detection of cross section.Constrained by theory and instrumentation technology, ultrasonic guided wave is basically only used for defect screening, ultrasonic guided wave quantitative detection technology has not been widely studied and applied.Aiming at the quantitative analysis of defect size problem in guided wave inspection, it proposes a method based on matching pursuit for quantifying the severity of pipeline defect along axial direction.By analyzing the characteristics of the echo signal, the optimized dictionary is constructed to efficiently decompose the edge reflection components from defect reflection signal.The axial extent of defect can be then quantitatively evaluated by using obtained information.Algorithm validation experiments of finite element numerical simulation as well as detecting the artificial defects in the aluminum pipe by using MSGW magnetostrictive guided wave detector show that the algorithm of error is less than 5%.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves have been successfully applied in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of pipelines of various industries. Guided waves are complicated because of their dispersive nature and infinite number of propagating modes. Mode control is of great significance for application of guided waves. The classical Normal Mode Expansion (NME) method is adopted to analyze guided wave mode control in hollow cylinders by using time delay axial array transducers and time delay circular array transducers. Guided wave mode control can be implemented when the axial array transducers and circular array transducers are specially designed. The theoretical prediction is verified by finite element numerical evaluation.

Abstract:Polyethylene (PE) pipe has been widely used for the transportation of gas in cities because of the excellent corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, excellent welding performance and longer service life. Fusion welding is one of the main connection methods of polyethylene pipe. However, the defects in butt fusion joints due to circumstances and wrong operation are very common on the work site, which have been one of the most serious risks of pipeline system. On the base of the classification of defects in PE butt fusion joint, the phased array ultrasonic technique is presented, with the purpose of overcoming the detecting difficulty caused by the attenuation of PE. An automatic ultrasonic testing system is designed and fabricated. The reliability and process performance are tested through detecting PE butt fusion joints with typical defects. It is shown that the ultrasonic techniques presented in the paper are applicable for the detecting of typical defects such as pores, inclusions on fusion surface and lack of fusion in PE joints, which will improve the safety of PE pipeline.

Abstract:The detection of defects in pipes is of very importance to the oil, chemistry, gas industry etc. The guided wave method that detects refection waves from defects is developed and proves to be effective. The disadvantages such as low speed and high cost in current non-destructive testing for defects in pipes, the influences of varying exciting frequency on the detection of defects are numerically simulated and analyzed both in straight and curved pipes. And the results suggest that, under the condition of certain wall thickness of pipes, the testing sensitivity increases at first as the exciting frequency increases along, and then it begins to decrease when the frequency arrives at a specific value. It is also concluded that the error in determining the defect locations increases too as the exciting frequency increases. These results have instructive significance on realizing long distance and rapid non-destructive testing for longitudinal ultrasonic guided waves in pipes. At last, the structure of ring transducer that can excite guided waves is also presented in the paper.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided wave techniques are extensively applied in the non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring (SHM) of oil and gas pipelines due to its advantages of wide coverage, high screening efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the applications of ultrasonic guided wave techniques in pipeline defect detection, including developments in pipeline ultrasonic guided wave theory, advances in transducers for pipeline ultrasonic guided wave detection, the interaction between ultrasonic guided waves and pipeline defects and features, signal processing techniques for pipeline detection and monitoring. This paper aims to provide valuable references for researchers involved in ultrasonic guided wave-based pipeline detection through a comprehensive review.

Abstract:The butt-fusion process is an important method for connecting PE pipes, especially when the pipes are of large diameter and of thicker section. Since many different environmental factors can cause defects and flaws, the joints become the weak point that should be inspected before the pipes begin service. Especially cold welding caused by insufficient input of heat energy, which can not be detected by nondestructive test methods currently available, is one of the most dangerous defects in the butt-fusion joints of PE pipes. It has been discovered that there are three Eigen-lines in the butt-fusion joint of PE pipes by using the phased array ultrasonic focusing technique. Further research shows that the upper and lower Eigen-line indicates the solid-liquid interface and the middle Eigen-line indicates the initial butt interface. Based on a lot of experiments, it has been discovered that the distance between the upper and lower Eigen-line, is related with the input of heat energy during welding. So a new method called "Eigen-line method" is developed to assess cold welding by measuring the distance between the upper and lower Eigen-line. A set of experiments show that the method can detect cold welding in butt-fusion joints with the accuracy less than 6%, which can meet the testing requirement for welding joints in engineering.

Abstract:As a new nondestructive testing technology, ultrasonic guided wave technology has the advantages of long detection distance, fast speed, low cost, and can detect places that can not be detected by general conventional detectors, such as special pipelines such as casing or buried pipelines. Pressure pipeline is an important special equipment. It is often necessary to carry out radiographic inspection of welded joints in regular inspection, but it is difficult to implement in some practical occasions. This paper studies the ultrasonic imaging testing of typical welding defects, and compares the ultrasonic imaging testing results with the radiographic testing results. The results show that ultrasonic imaging testing can not only detect all welding defects, but also has more advantages than radiographic testing in defect location and defect quantification. When radiographic testing is difficult to implement, ultrasonic imaging testing can be used as a supplement to radiographic testing. On the basis of understanding the research status and development trend of related technologies at home and abroad, and clarifying the principle and requirements of phased array ultrasonic imaging detection of steel pipes, the research on key technologies such as phased array ultrasonic imaging based on mechanical and electronic composite scanning and online phased array ultrasonic imaging detection of steel pipe near-end defects was focused on, which solved the problems of image splicing and blind spots of end defect detection in multi-scanning mode. At the same time, combining phased array ultrasonic nondestructive testing with mechatronics technology, a set of online quantitative nondestructive testing system for steel pipes based on phased array ultrasonic imaging was developed, and related experimental research was carried out to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed technology.
Fluid Pipe Nondestructive Testing Based on Ultrasonic Guided Waves

Abstract:Structural damage identification technology for fluid pipes is highly practical in engineering field. For the purpose of realizing the pipeline damage localization, the feasibility and recognition accuracy of the ultrasonic guided wave testing technique in fluid pipes are discussed in this study. A pipe made of 20# carbon steel is used to investigate the damage localization. According to dispersion equations, numerical method is applied to obtain various modal dispersion curves. Based on pipe wave propagation theory, and considering the influences of pipe wave patterns, dispersion characteristics and propagation velocity and the requirement of avoiding the truncated frequency, the excitation signals are selected. The guided wave transmission mechanism in the fluid pipes with different fluids is analyzed numerically by means of ABAQUS software. The method of probability density function is applied to realize fluid pipe damage localization. Finally, notches and holes are introduced to the fluid pipe in the experiment to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The experimental results and simulation results are consistent. The engineering practical value of this method is proved.

Abstract:Millions of miles of pipes are being used in both civil and industrial fields. Spiral-welded pipes, which are widely applied in fields such as drainage, architecture as well as oil and gas storage and transportation, are difficult to inspect due to their complex geometry. Guided waves have shown a great potential in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) for such cases. Flexural guided waves that propagate at a helix angle relative to the axial direction of pipe, are the most appropriate modes for inspecting spiral-welded pipes. The classical Normal Mode Expansion method (NME) is adopted to disseminate the forced response and perturbation analysis of a steel pipe with respect to a time delay circular loading. A time delay circular array transducer (TDCAT) is proposed for the purpose of exciting pure flexural mode in pipes. Pure flexural mode can be excited when the time delay parameter is specifically designed. The theoretical prediction is verified by finite element numerical evaluation and spiral-welded pipe inspection experiment.

Abstract:Numerical simulation and experimental investigation on defect detection in pipes using ultrasonic guided waves are carried out in the paper. In theoretical analysis, normal mode expansion method is used to quantify the coupling between the applied boundary loadings and acoustic field. The general results are specialized to the loading configuration of multielement transducers. Several important conclusions can be drawn about the design of transducers to generate guided wave modes in pipes. The importance of design parameters such as the number of elements, the ratio of gap width to element width, and the length of each element is discussed in detail. The experimental study demonstrates the use of practical axisymmetric loading in generating axisymmetric longitudinal guided waves, which is particularly useful in the inspection of tubing or piping.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided wave testing is widely used for the inspection of buried pipelines at present.The characteristics and application of inspection were introduced.As an example,pipelines in gas station were tested on-site and the testing result reliability was verified by excavation.Data analysis method was developed to analyze the inspection data.Comparison results showed that the ultrasonic guided waves could make it reality to test on-site quickly,and had wide prospect.

Abstract:The use of guided wave-based Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for monitoring Polyethylene (PE) pipes is mostly restricted to detecting defects in welded zones, despite its diversified success in monitoring metallic pipes. PE's viscoelastic behavior and semi-crystalline structure make it prone to crack formation under extreme loads and environmental factors, which is a leading cause of pipeline failure. This state-of-the-art study aims to demonstrate the potential of UT for detecting cracks in non-welded regions of natural gas PE pipes. Laboratory experiments were conducted using a UT system consisting of low-cost piezoceramic transducers assembled in a pitch-catch configuration. The amplitude of the transmitted wave was analyzed to study wave interaction with cracks of different geometries. The frequency of the inspecting signal was optimized through wave dispersion and attenuation analysis, guiding the selection of third- and fourth- order longitudinal modes for the study. The findings revealed that cracks with lengths equal to or greater than the wavelength of the interacting mode were more easily detectable, while smaller crack lengths required greater crack depths for detection. However, there were potential limitations in the proposed technique related to crack orientation. These insights were validated using a finite element-based numerical model, confirming the potential of UT for detecting cracks in PE pipes.

Abstract:After a description of the basic principle of vertical ultrasonic guided wave, this paper has made an analysis on the variation of the displacement offset of vertical mode variant with frequency; it has also presented an approach by which a pectinate symmetrical transducer be used to effectively detect pipeline flaws. Data analysis and simulation indicate that longitudinal ultrasonic guided wave can be applied to the on-line distance detection of the pipelines covered or sheltered by barriers.

Abstract:The torsional guided wave T(0,1)is an attractive mode to use for underwater pipeline inspection be-cause this mode is not sensitive to liquid loading.A novel piezoelectric transducer array for the detection of corrosion in underwater pipelines using T(0,1)mode is developed and a series of tests are carried out in the laboratory envi-ronment.The transducer employs thickness shear mode piezoelectric ceramic as the sensitive element.The holding device is modular in design,and the modules are connected with other by a pin.This design method makes the transducer array has a certain flexibility,and the modules can be easily disassembled to satisfy the number of trans-ducers for various diameter pipelines.The results show that the transducer array can efficiently excite and receive the T(0,1)mode in underwater pipeline.The echo signal from artificial notch correlated well with the notch size and location.The transducer system has the advantages of simple installation and flexible use,and provides an effective means for the underwater pipeline inspection using guided waves.

Abstract:This research utilizes Ultrasonic Guided Waves (UGW) to inspect corrosion-type defects in steel pipe walls, providing a solution for hard-to-reach areas typically inaccessible by traditional non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. Fundamental helical UGW modes are used, allowing the detection of defects anywhere on the pipe's circumference using a limited number of transducers and measurements on the upper side of the pipe. Finite element (FE) modeling and experiments investigated generating and receiving UGW helical waves and their propagation through varying corrosion-type defects. Defect detection is based on phase delay differences in the helical wave's signal amplitude peaks between defective and defect-free regions. Phase delay variations were noted for the different depths and spatial dimensions of the defects. These results highlight the phase delay method's potential for NDT pipeline inspection.

Abstract:To improve the safety and reliability of pipeline structures, much work has been done using ultrasonic guided waves methods for pipe inspection. Though good for evaluating the defects in the pipes, most of the methods lack the capability to precisely identify the defects in the pipe features like welds or supports. Therefore, a novel guided wave based cross-sectional diagnostic imaging algorithm was developed to improve the ability of circumferential cracks identification in the pipe features. To ensure the accuracy of the imaging, an angular profile-based frequency selection method is presented. As validation, the approach was employed to identify the presence and location of a small circumferential crack with 1.13% cross sectional area (CSA) in the welding zone of a 48 mm diameter type 304 stainless steel pipe. Accurate identification results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed approach.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide an overview of the experimental and simulation works focused on the detection, localisation and assessment of various defects in pipes by applying fast-screening guided ultrasonic wave techniques that have been used in the oil and gas industries over the past 20 years. Major emphasis is placed on limitations, capabilities, defect detection in coated buried pipes under pressure and corrosion monitoring using different commercial guided wave (GW) systems, approaches to simulation techniques such as the finite element method (FEM), wave mode selection, excitation and collection, GW attenuation, signal processing and different types of GW transducers. The effects of defect parameters on reflection coefficients are also discussed in terms of different simulation studies and experimental verifications.

Abstract:Despite the success of guided wave ultrasonic inspection for internal defect detection in steel pipes, its application on polyethylene (PE) pipe remains relatively unexplored. The growth of internal cracks in PE pipe severely affects its pressure-holding capacity, hence the early detection of internal cracks is crucial for effective pipeline maintenance strategies. This study extends the scope of guided wave-based ultrasonic testing to detect the growth of internal cracks in a natural gas distribution PE pipe. Laboratory experiments and a finite element model were planned to study the wave-crack interaction at different stages of axially oriented internal crack growth with a piezoceramic transducer-based setup arranged in a pitch-catch configuration. Mode dispersion analysis supplemented with preliminary experiments was performed to isolate the optimal inspection frequency, leading to the selection of the T(0,1) mode at 50-kHz for the investigation. A transmission index based on the energy of the T(0,1) mode was developed to trace the extent of simulated crack growth. The findings revealed an inverse linear correlation between the transmission index and the crack depth for crack growth beyond 20% crack depth.
