Abstract:The influences of the different flame retarding methods on flammability,mechanical properties and fluidity in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene(ABS) preparation were studied.ABS could not have good mechanical properties,fluidity and flame resistance at the same time when flame retardant with low molecular weight or self-extinguished polymer was added alone to ABS.In coordination with chlorinated polyethylene and compatibilizer prepared,when Sb_2O_3 and poly(vinyl chloride),i.e.PVC were added to ABS after they were compounded together and the mass ratio of ABS and PVC was from 70∶30 to 30∶70,the composites possessed excellent comprehensive properties: the flame resistance reached up to FV-0 grade,the melt index was 019 g/min and the impact strength was 23 kJ/m~2.

Abstract:The type and content of non-halogen flame retardant were used for preparing non-halogen flame-retardant ABS by melting extrusion. The influence of the type and its content of non-halogen flame retardant on the flame-retardant effects of ABS was observed. The oxygen index of the flame-retardant ABS was measured. The results show that the flame-retardant effect of ABS composites with 20. 0% microcapsule red-phosphorus/Mg (OH)2 reaches V-0.

Abstract:This paper summarized the latest advances in studies of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer(ABS) modified with non-halogen flame retardants,and compared the flame retardant effectiveness of inorganic and organic phosphate,cyclophosphazene,silicon-containing compounds and reactive flame retardant copolymer.Compound flame retardant systems could make good use of the synergistic effects between different components,resulting in higher flame retardancy.Adopting inorganic nano-flame retardants could improve the mechanical properties,thermal properties and flammability of the flame retardant systems so as to acquire the composite materials with excellent comprehensive properties.Therefore,the combination of inorganic nano-flame retardants with the conventional ones is an important approach to study on the non-halogen flame retardant ABS resin.

Abstract:The burning behavior and smoking performance of the flame retarded ABS made respectively by DBDPO and DBDPE are compared using Cone Calorimeter.Results show that the relevant parameters to characterize the fire retardant feature of the flame retarded ABS made by DBDPE are close to those of the ABS by DBDPO,and so DBDPE can be used as substitute of DBDPO for flame retarded ABS.

Abstract:To achieve effective flame retardant for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) without halogen,synergistic effect was evaluated by incorporating phosphate with char body as coflame retardants.Two aromatic diphosphates(PFR),which are tetra-(2,6-dimethy phenyl) resorcinol diphosphate(DMP-RDP) and tetra-(2,6-dimethy phenyl) hydroquinone diphosphate(DMP-HDP),were synthesized and characterized by FTIR、1H-NMR and TGA.A series of ABS/PFR/NP compounds were manufactured and experiment data were obtained by limit oxygen index(LOI) instrument and TGA under pure nitrogen.The results showed that the coflame retardants promoted crosslinking and char formation compared with control sample,especially,when ABS,PFR and NP was in the proportion of 75∶20∶5 and the LOI increased awfully.The TGA datum demonstrated that the more stable was the char generated in high temperature,the better flame retardancy was obtained.
Acrylonitrile–Butadiene–Styrene Terpolymer with Metal Hypophosphites: Flame Retardance and Mechanism Research

Abstract:Three metal hypophosphites, including aluminum hypophosphite (AP), magnesium hypophosphite (MP), and calcium hypophosphite (CP), were applied to flame retard acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS). Thermal stability of three flame-retardant ABS were evaluated, and the enhancement of thermal stability were found. Flammable properties of flame-retardant ABS were investigated by Underwriters Laboratories 94 vertical burning test (UL-94), limit oxygen index (LOI), and cone calorimetry. Results suggested that AP could endow the best flame retardance for ABS with a UL-94 V-0 rating and LOI value of 25.1%. The peak heat release rate of ABS-AP reduced to 174.8 kW/m2, and the total heat released was decreased to 40.9 MJ/m2. Thermogravimetric Fourier transform infrared (TG-FTIR), FTIR, and scanning electron microcsopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDX) were used to characterize the gaseous products and condensed residue respectively. Results showed that the flame-retardant mechanism was attributed to the formation of a two-layer protective barrier consisting of an organic P–O–C char layer and an inorganic layer to insulate material from fire and oxygen in the condensed phase, and the generation of P• and PO• to capture the reactive radicals in the vapor phase.

Abstract:Improving the flammability performance of ABS by using halogenated additives has been common method in the past but with the increase in environmental awareness, has been severely limited. We aimed to use halogen‐free flame‐retardant additives in our study to improve the flame‐retardant properties of ABS. It was aimed to achieve V0 rating at 1.5 mm thickness, LOI value higher than 28% and glow wire combustion index of 9600C. Mechanical and thermal properties, MFI and morphology of ABS were also investigated. Natural flammability properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) seriously limit the use of ABS polymers in industries. Improving the flammability performance of ABS by using halogenated additives has been a very common method in the past. However, with increasing environmental awareness, the use of halogen‐containing additives has been severely limited over time. Therefore, we aimed to use halogen‐free flame‐retardant additives in our study to improve the flame‐retardant properties of ABS. ABS‐based composites containing 20, 25, 30 % aluminum diethyl‐phosphinate (AlPi) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) halogen‐free flame‐retardant additives by weight, were prepared using a twin‐screw extruder. V0 rating according to UL 94 standard for the thickness of 1.5 mm, limiting oxygen index (LOI) value higher than 28 %, and glow wire flammability index of 960 °C were aimed in this study. To improve the LOI values of flame‐retardant ABS composites, pentaerythritol (PER), zinc borate (ZB), and magnesium hydroxide were used. The highest LOI value was obtained to be 28.1 % by using 12.5 wt.% AlPi, 12.5 wt.% APP, 5 wt.% PER and 3 wt.% ZB. The effect of flame retardants on mechanical properties (flexural and tensile properties), impact properties (Izod and Charpy‐notched impact strength), thermal properties, melt flow index, and morphology (scanning electron microscopy) of ABS were also examined.

Abstract:The application of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer as construction material is largely restricted by its inherent flammability and the release of a great amount of smoke and toxic gases during combustion. To address this issue, the combination of conventional flame retardants and nanoadditives was proven to be a promising way. Herein, both intumescent flame retardants (IFR) and layered nanofillers, that is, graphene and layered double hydroxide were added into ABS resin. These nanofillers exhibited superior dispersion in the ABS matrix. Thermal and fire behaviors of ABS resin were investigated by thermogravimetry analysis, UL-94 vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index test, and cone calorimetry. The ABS composites containing IFR and layered nanofillers presented remarkable decline in total heat release, peak heat release rate, and volume of toxic effluents released in the burning process compared with those of neat ABS, indicating the significantly improved fire safety of ABS. Moreover, introducing layered nanofillers could further enhance the heat stability and fire safety of the flame-retardant ABS composites, indicating the presence of synergistic effect between IFR and layered nanofillers. The scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy results confirmed the formation of compact and dense intumescent chars, which could obstruct the spread of heat and mass, and thus improved the heat stability and flame retardancy of ABS resin. Abstract:A novel halogen-free fame-retardant system,which is consist of the synthesized intumescent flame retardant(M-IFR)and coating red phosphorus(RP),was used for the flame retardation of ABS.The flame retardancy of the resulting flame retardant system was investigated by LOI,UL94 and Cone Calorimeter,respectively.The results show that when a mass ratio of M-IFR to RP is 8:5 and their total loading is 26wt%,the flame-retardant ABS system has very good flame retardancy:LOI 24.5 % and UL-94 V-0 rating.Based upon the cone calorimeter test,it can be found that the flame-retardant ABS system has much lower PHRR,THR and AMLR and longer tign,than neat ABS.Therefore,the novel halogen-free fame-retardant system is a very promising system for the flame retardation of ABS.

Abstract:Aluminum isobutylphosphinate (APBu) and its synergistic system with red phosphorus (APBu/RP) were used to flame-retard ABS. With the addition of APBu to ABS, the flame retardance of the material was greatly improved, that LOI value was as high as 29.8%, and a UL-94 V-0 rating was obtained; moreover, heat release parameters obtained from cone calorimetry decreased. However, the smoke release of the material during combustion increased. When RP was added to ABS-APBu system, flame-retardant synergism was gained, and it was helpful to reduce the smoke release of the material. The decomposition behaviors of materials were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and it was found that the residues of materials at 700 C increased with the addition of APBu or APBu/RP. The flame-retardant mechanisms of APBu and APBu/RP were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and pyrolysis-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (Py-GC/MS). Results suggested that the addition of RP to ABS-APBu further enhanced the flame retardation of APBu both in the gaseous phase and condensed phase, leading to a high synergistic effect. Intumescent Flame Retardant BDP/APP/PR Retarded ABS

Abstract:The effect of intumescent flame retardant(IFR) composed of bisphenol A bis(diphenyl) phosphate ester(BDP),ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and phenolic resins(PR) on ABS was investigated by limiting oxygen index(LOI),horizontal and vertical firing,cone calorimetry and scanning electron microscope.The results demonstrated that IFR was effective on the flame retardancy of ABS.It was also found that the ABS retarded by IFR could still pass UL94 V-0 rating,and its limited oxygen index value could reach 29.9%.The cone experimental results showed that the av-HRR and av-EHC of the ABS retarded by IFR lowed 50.9% and 21.7% respectively than those of pure ABS.SEM observation revealed that the puffy,continuous,intact,strong and coking charred layers were formed by lots of closed bubbles in ABS specimen filled with IFR after burning.

Abstract:A kind of triazine derivative, 2,4 diamino 6 hydroxyethylamino 1,3,5 s triazine, was synthesized and characterized. Some factors affecting the reaction were investigated. The intumescent flame retardant (IFR), which composed of this triazine derivative, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was added to ABS. The experiment results showed that the ABS containing IFR had good flame retardancy.

Abstract:PVC,CPE,nano-Mg(OH)2 and nano-ZnSnO3 were used to modified ABS.The results showed that the best prescription:m(ABS)∶m(PVC)∶m(CPE)∶m(nano-Mg(OH)2)∶m(nano-ZnSnO3)=100∶60∶11∶3.5∶2.The tensile strength was 36.39 MPa,the notched impact strength was 34.8 kJ /m2,the oxygen index was 31.5%,level firing ranked I,vertical firing ranked FV-0 and almost there was no black smoke in the combustion process.The comprehensive performance of compound system was better.

Abstract:ABS resin has excellently mechanical properties, heat resistance, processing property and the like. So that ABS resin is widely used for electric and electronic components, automobile components, and so on. However, the thermoplastic resins are generally flammable and, for their use, it is necessary to make the resins flame-retarded by adding a low-molecule flame-retardant or a flame-retarded polymer to the thermoplastic resins. Several methods were adopted in flame-retarding ABS resin and its alloys, such as: (1) a halogen-type flame-retardant. (2) Organic phosphate, nitrogen-containing or silicon-type fire-proofings. (3) Inorganic fillers added in preparing resin compositions. Recently, a specific aromatic phosphate provided for ABS resin and PC/ABS alloy shows a high flame retardancy, excellent mechanical properties, heat resistance and hydrolysis resistance in good balance.

Abstract:The authors prepared flame retardant polymer alloys consisting of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS) with melt extrusion process in twine screw extruder and delved into the impacts of flame retardants, compatibilizers and antioxidants on comprehensive performance of the PC/ABS alloy. The results indicate that increasing dosage of the flame retardant leads to a decline in Charpy notched impact strength but an increase in tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the PC/ABS alloy in the present experimental range. The application performance of the alloy reaches its optimum value when setting the mass fraction of flame retardant and antioxidant at 18% and 2.0%-3.0%, respectively.

Abstract:With styrene-butadiene-acrylonitrile(ABS) as subtstrate resins,by adding resorcin bis(diphenyl phosphate)(SOL-DP) condensation polymer and melamine cyanurate(MCA) blendable system as flame retardant packages,halogen-free flame retardant ABS composites were prepared and its mechanical properties and combustion performance were studied.The test results showed that,when the effective content of SOL-DP and MCA in the ABS resin reached at 8% and 4% respectively,the mechanical properties of the samples maintained about 90%,and LOI values reached as high as 27.5%,meanwhile,the samples achieved V-0 UL-94.SOL-DP with MCA can promote char formation and prevent the combustion behaviour of the ABS effectively.When SOL-DP and MCA blends total content amount was to 15%,the heat release rate and total heat release rate dropped significantly,such as the maximum heat release rate dropped to 70%.

Abstract:The composite flame retardant consisted of phenol aldehyde resin(PF),phosphate,zinc borate or polysiloxane with acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene(ABS) resin was melted extrusion blending to prepare the no-halogen flame-retardant ABS composite.The influence of content of phosphate,polysiloxane and zinc borate on flame retardancy of flame-retardant ABS composite was studied respectively.The thermal decomposition behavior of flame-retardant ABS composite was studied and combustible surface carbon layer was observed.The results show that PF/phosphate composite charred system can elevate flame retardency of ABS composite effectively.Zinc borate and polysiloxane have flame-retardant synergistic effects and increase charred content for flameretardant ABS composite.Compared with polysiloxane,zinc borate has better flame retardant synergy effects.

Abstract:With the aim of improving compatibility between intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene (ABS) composites, we have prepared a modified intumescent flame-retardant composite (IFRC) powder by compounding the three components of the IFR normally used with TX-10 surfactant/polyacrylate latex. The ABS/IFRC composites were compared with the unfilled ABS by investigating their thermal degradation and combustion behaviors with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and a cone calorimeter (CONE). The DSC and TGA data showed that the thermal stability of the ABS/IFRC at high temperature could be enhanced and the char residue formation was effectively increased by comparison with the ABS. The CONE results revealed that IFRC was clearly able to change the decomposition behavior of ABS and form a char layer on the surface of the composites, resulting in an efficient reduction of their flammability parameters compared with the ABS, such as the heat release rate, total heat release, rate of smoke release, total smoke release, and so on.

Abstract:A new intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) system consisting of expandable graphite (EG) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was applied in acrylonitrilebutadienestyrene (ABS) resin. A synergistic effect between EG and APP on the flame retardancy of ABS was observed. Fixing the total loading of flame retardant at 15 wt %, the limited oxygen index (LOI) could reach 31 vol % at a weight ratio of 3 : 1 for EG and APP. While LOI values of EG- and APP-filled ABS were only 26.0 and 21.5 vol % at the same loading, respectively. The UL-94 vertical burning test suggested that samples with different ratios of EG and APP could all pass V-0 rating while the samples containing EG and APP alone only passed V-1 rating. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the addition of EG and APP (3 : 1 by weight) to ABS led to an increase in the amount of high-temperature residue by 11.8 wt %, and a decrease of mass loss rate by 0.7%/degrees C compared with pure ABS. Scanning electronic microscopy revealed a homogeneous compact intumescent char layer of ABS/EG/APP samples. Abstract:Polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blend is an important industrial plastic alloy due to its overwhelming advantages.However,the addition of ABS causes deterioration of flame retardancy for PC/ ABS blend,therefore,it's significant to improve flammability of PC/ABS blends.For the demand of environmental protection,aryl phosphate ester is an effective substitute for halogen flame retardant.In this research,aromatic phosphate ester (TPP) and alpha zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) were used as flame retardant for PC/ABS blends,and their thermal properties and flame retardancy were studied.Thermogravimetic (TG) analysis in nitrogen atmosphere indicate that TPP and α-ZrP could markedly enhance the thermal stability,especially at high temperature.TPP and α-ZrP do not show great synergistic effect in vertical burning (UL 94) and limited oxygen index (LOI) tests.However,the cone calorimetry results indicate that TPP and α-ZrP not only enhance the flame retardancy of PC/ ABS,but extend the burning time and slow down the process of combustion.
