Abstract:In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,Jost-Yau] and [26, Sampson].

Abstract:The authors give an algebraic method to add uniton numbers for harmonic maps from a simply connected domain Omega subset of or equal to R-2 boolean OR {infinity} into the unitary group U(N) with finite uniton number. So, it is proved that any n-uniton can be obtained from a 0-uniton by purely algebraic operations and integral transforms to solve the partial derivative-problem via two different ways.

Abstract:The authors consider ±(Φ, J)-holomorphic maps from Sasakian manifolds into Kähler manifolds, which can be seen as counterparts of holomorphic maps in Kähler geometry. It is proved that those maps must be harmonic and basic. Then a Schwarz lemma for those maps is obtained. On the other hand, an invariant in its basic homotopic class is obtained. Moreover, the invariant is just held in the class of basic maps.

Abstract:Let psi:S2 --> C P(n) be an isometric minimal immersion of the Riemann sphere S2 into CP(n) with constant Kahler angle theta. In this paper, we prove that Bolton et al.'s conjecture holds if theta is not too close to pi/2, that is, psi is +/- holomorphic or belongs to the Veronese sequence if \cos theta\ greater-than-or-equal-to 1/5.

Abstract:We show that surfaces such that the natural projections of the unit normal bundles are harmonic morphisms are composed of minimal points and totally umbilical points. As its application, we find a harmonic map from the torus to the complex quadric in CP3 such that the projection map of the associated sphere bundle constructed by Gudmundsson is not a harmonic morphism. This contrasts sharply with the situation for holomorphic maps. We also establish sufficient conditions for reducing the codimension of an isometric immersion with conformal second fundamental form.

Abstract:We investigate surfaces with constant harmonic-mean curvature one (HMC-1 surfaces) in hyperbolic three-space. We allow them to have certain kinds of singularities, and discuss some global properties. As well as flat surfaces and surfaces with constant mean curvature one (CMC-1 surfaces), HMC-1 surfaces belong to a certain class of Weingarten surfaces. From the viewpoint of parallel surfaces, CMC-1 surfaces and HMC-1 surfaces are representative among this class.

Abstract:Let M be a Kähler surface and Σ be a closed symplectic surface which is smoothly immersed in M. Let α be the Kähler angle of Σ in M. We ﬁrst deduce the Euler–Lagrange equation of the functional L = ∫Σ 1/cos α dµ in the class of symplectic surfaces. It is cos3 α H = (J(\_J\_∇ cos α)⊤)⊥ , where H is the mean curvature vector of Σ in M, and J is the complex structure compatible with the Kähler form ω in M; it is an elliptic equation. We call a surface satisfying a this equation a symplectic critical surface. We show that, if M is a Kähler–Einstein surface with a nonnegative scalar curvature, each symplectic critical surface is holomorphic. We also study the topological properties of symplectic critical surfaces. By our formula and Webster’s formula, we deduce that the Kähler angle of a compact symplectic critical surface is constant, which is not true a for noncompact symplectic critical surfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the associated family of harmonic maps $\mathcal{F}: M \rightarrow G/K$ from a Riemann surface $M$ into inner symmetric spaces of compact or non-compact type which are either algebraic or totally symmetric. These notions are the two components of the definition of a harmonic map of finite uniton number, as stated by [2]. We finish this paper by comparing these to notions and by stating a conjecture.

Abstract:The author gives a characterization of counterexamples to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on smooth projective surfaces in positive characteristic.More precisely,it is reproved that if there is a counterexample to the Kodaira-Ramanujam vanishing theorem on a smooth projective surface X in positive characteristic,then X is either a quasi-elliptic surface of Kodaira dimension 1 or a surface of general type.Furthermore,it is proved that up to blow-ups,X admits a fibration to a smooth projective curve,such that each fiber is a singular curve.

Abstract:This note answers some questions on holomorphic curves and their distribution in an algebraic surface of positive index. More specifically, we exploit the existence of natural negatively curved "pseudo-Finsler" metrics on a surface S of general type whose Chern numbers satisfy c(2)1>2c2 to show that a holomorphic map of a Riemann surface to S whose image is not in any rational or elliptic curve must satisfy a distance decreasing property with respect to these metrics. We show as a consequence that such a map extends over isolated punctures. So assuming that the Riemann surface is obtained from a compact one of genus q by removing a finite number of points, then the map is actually algebraic and defines a compact holomorphic curve in S. Furthermore, the degree of the curve with respect to a fixed polarization is shown to be bounded above by a multiple of q - 1 irrespective of the map.

Abstract:For any twisted ideal polygon in $\mathbb{H}^3$, we construct a harmonic map from $\mathbb{C}$ to $\mathbb{H}^3$ with a polynomial Hopf differential, that is asymptotic to the given polygon, and is a bounded distance from a pleated plane. Our proof uses the harmonic map heat flow. We also show that such a harmonic map is unique once we prescribe the principal part of its Hopf differential.

Abstract:It is known that there is no nonconstant bounded harmonic map from the Euclidean space R-n to the hyperbolic space H-m. This is a particular case of a result of S.-Y. Cheng. However, there are many polynomial growth harmonic maps from R-2 to H-2 by the results of Z. Han, L.- F. Tam, A. Treibergs and T. an. One of the purposes of this paper is to construct harmonic maps from R-n to H-m by prescribing boundary data at infinity. The boundary data is assumed to satisfy some symmetric properties. On the other hand, it was proved by Han-Tam-Treibergs-Wan that under some reasonable assumptions, the image of a harmonic diffeomorphism from R-2 into H-2 is an ideal polygon with n+2 vertices on the geometric boundary of H-2 if and only if its Hopf differential is of the form phi dz(2) where phi is a polynomial of degree n. It is unclear whether one can nd explicit relation between the coefficients of and the vertices of the image of the harmonic map. The second purpose of this paper is to investigate this problem. We will explicitly demonstrate some families of polynomial holomorphic quadratic differentials, such that the harmonic maps from R-2 into H-2 with Hopf differentials in the same family will have the same image. In proving this, we first study the asymptotic behaviors of harmonic maps from R-2 into H-2 with polynomial Hopf differentials phi dz(2). The result may have independent interest.
A classification of constant Gaussian curvature surfaces in the three-dimensional hyperbolic space

Abstract:Weakly complete constant Gaussian curvature $-1<K<0$ surfaces will be classified in terms of holomorphic quadratic differentials. For this purpose, we will first establish a loop group method for constant Gaussian curvature surfaces in $\mathbb H^3$ with $K>-1$ but $K \neq 0$ by using harmonicities of Lagrangian and Legendrian Gauss maps. Then we will show that a spectral parameter deformation of the Lagrangian harmonic Gauss map gives a harmonic map into $\mathbb H^2$ for $-1< K<0$ or $\mathbb S^2$ for $K>0$, respectively.

Abstract:In this note we study the local negativity for certain configurations of smooth rational curves in smooth surfaces with numerically trivial canonical class. We show that for such rational curves there is a bound for the so-called local Harbourne constants, which measure the local negativity phenomenon. Moreover, we provide explicit examples of interesting configurations of rational curves in some K3 and Enriques surfaces and compute their local Harbourne constants.
