Abstract:Emerging structure and magnetic properties of Al3+-modified SrFe12O19 M-type hexaferrite system (SrAlxFe12−xO19) had been studied in detail via doping engineering. With Al3+ ion nominal content ranging from 0 to 4 (0≤x≤4), the lattice parameters decrease due to the substitution of Fe3+ ions by smaller Al3+ ions, and the magnetization shows a continuous reduction with the increasing of Al content. For the coercivity, its value initially increases, reaching a maximum value of 16,876.9Oe at x=3, and then reduces with the Al content further increase. When all the Fe3+ ions (x=4) are replaced by Al3+ ions, the net magnetic moment will be closed to zero, that will weaken the exchange interaction between Fe3+ ions, resulting in decrease of coercivity sharply and transformation ferrimagnetism into antiferromagnetism. The mechanism of the improvement of the magnetic properties induced by Al doping is discussed in the present work.
Influence of Alumina on Modifier Strontium in A356 Alloy Melt

Abstract:The mechanism of the reactions between alumina and modifier strontium in A356 alloy melt have been investigated, by means of XRD and SEM. The results showed that there have been a series of reactions between them, forming the kind of compounds Sr-Al-O, which are water-soluble, and this led to the consumption of strontium. When adding strontium into the molten Al-Si alloys, the SrSi2 would form firstly, and then the Al2Si2Sr compound formed through ternary eutectic reaction, which appeared in the shape of both bulk and strip. The Al-Si-O compound was also found which laid over the Al2Si2Sr compound.

Abstract:The effect of Mn and Sr on the precipitation of iron intermetallics from A413 aluminium alloy melts has been studied. A high concentration of iron (2.5% Fe) was selected to facilitate the identification of the intermetallic compounds. As usual for the iron-rich intermetallic particles, many were observed to be cracked, often precisely down their central axis. Mn additions above 0.9 per cent, in the absence of strontium, refines the beta-phase from large plates (needles in 2-D section) to a more numerous, compact, and polyhedral form. This phenomenon, often known as the “fragmentation” of the alphaphase intermetallics, is identified as a conversion from plate to dendritic morphology, plus an effect deriving from the non-straightening of double oxide films (bifilms) on which the intermetallics grow. Sr addition at 0.03 per cent produced the expected modification of eutectic silicon, but in the presence of Mn, Sr had negligible influence on altering the plate-like form of the primary beta-phase. However, the use of higher levels of Sr (more than 0.1%) was found to be a powerful factor in changing the morphology of the intermetallics from plate to star-like (i.e. dendritic). Sr was also observed to expand the central bifilms in intermetallics, converting the central cracks into open porosity. This was interpreted as the result of an increased hydrogen content opening bifilms.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of strontium (Sr) additions on the corrosion resistance of an LM6 (A413) aluminium alloy. By incorporating varying concentrations of Sr (0.01 wt.% and 0.05 wt.%), the morphological and corrosion behaviours of the alloy were analysed under different corrosive environments, including sulphuric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium chloride solutions. The results demonstrate that Sr modifications significantly enhance the alloy's corrosion resistance, with the most substantial improvement observed at 0.05 wt.% Sr. The analysis revealed that the weight loss of the alloy in sulphuric acid decreased by 2.5% with 0.05 wt.% Sr after 10 days of immersion, due to the formation of a stable passive oxide layer. In sodium hydroxide, however, the weight loss was reduced by 5% with 0.05 wt.% Sr after 10 days, indicating aggressive uniform corrosion. In the 3.5% sodium chloride solution, the corrosion rates remain relatively low, and the 0.05 wt.% Sr alloy showed a decrease in corrosion product formation over time, suggesting enhanced resistance. Detailed surface analyses, including 3D profiling and morphology assessments, revealed that Sr additions refine the eutectic silicon phase, transforming it from a coarse to a more desirable fibrous or lamellar structure, thus improving the alloy's overall performance. The innovative findings underscore the potential of Sr as an effective microstructural modifier for enhancing the durability and longevity of Al-Si alloys in corrosive environments.

Abstract:Effects of strontium addition on grain refinement of AM60B alloy are investigated. It is showed that a small quantity of strontium can increase the formation temperature of primary phase α-Mg and decrease the recalescence temperature difference;strontium enriches in front of the grain growth interface during solidification,which restrains the growth of the grains;the grain size has decreased dramatically from 425μm to 147μm under this experiment conditions.(3.

Abstract:At the moment, to improve quality of metal (especially low-alloyed), out-of-furnace steel processing technologies are used with complex alloys utilization, which include alkaline earth metals (ALM) in addition to silicon. Study of strontium additives effect on deoxidation and liquid steel modification processes is one of the promising areas of research in field of metallurgical technologies. Thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibria in Fe – Sr – Si –C– O system melt was carried out using method of constructing surface of components solubility in metal. Solubility surface determines stability limits of non-metallic phases formed during deoxidation, depending on composition of liquid metal of the studied system. The calculation was carried out using equilibrium constants of reactions occurring in the melt during deoxidation, as well as the first order interaction parameters (according to Wagner) of elements in liquid iron. Activity of the oxide melt components was determined using theory of subregular ionic solutions. Activity of the gas phase was calculated taking into account partial pressures. Simulations were performed for two temperatures (1550 and 1600 °C) for fixed carbon concentrations (0 (no carbon in liquid iron) and 0.1 % (low-carbon metal melt)). It has been shown that, in comparison with silicon, strontium is stronger deoxidizing agent in liquid metal. According to the simulation results, liquid oxide non-metallic inclusions of variable composition or strontium ortho- and metasilicates Sr 2 SiO 4 and SrSiO 3 (with an increase in strontium concentration) should be the main oxide phases in deoxidation products. Decrease in the temperature of liquid metal leads to changes in phase formation (formation of SrSiO 3 silicate becomes possible).

Abstract:The combined effect of Sr and melt purification on the solidification structure of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that different strontium contents have a certain inhibitory effect on the precipitation of primary silicon in Al-20Si alloy. A strontium content of 0.3 wt% completely inhibited the precipitation of primary silicon in Al-16Si alloy. The synergistic effect of melt purification and 0.3 wt% Sr eliminated primary silicon from the solidified structure of Al-Si alloy with a silicon content of less than 20 wt%. It also transformed the solidified structure of Al-20Si alloy into pseudo-eutectic. Therefore, the synergistic effect of an appropriate amount of Sr and melt purification suppressed the precipitation of primary silicon in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys.

Abstract:Iron is the most common and detrimental impurity in aluminum casting alloys and has long been associated with an increase in casting defects. While the negative effects of iron are clear, the mechanism involved is not fully understood. It is generally believed to be associated with the formation of Fe-rich intermetallic phases. Many factors, including alloy composition, melt superheating, Sr modification, cooling rate, and oxide bifilms, could play a role. In the present investigation, the interactions between iron and each individual element commonly present in aluminum casting alloys, were investigated using a combination of thermal analysis and interrupted quenching tests. The Fe-rich intermetallic phases were characterized using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and the results were compared with the predictions by Thermocalc. It was found that increasing the iron content changes the precipitation sequence of the β phase, leading to the precipitation of coarse binary β platelets at a higher temperature. In contrast, manganese, silicon, and strontium appear to suppress the coarse binary β platelets, and Mn further promotes the formation of a more compact and less harmful α phase. They are therefore expected to reduce the negative effects of the β phase. While reported in the literature, no effect of P on the amount of β platelets was observed. Finally, attempts are made to correlate the Fe-rich intermetallic phases to the formation of casting defects. The role of the β phase as a nucleation site for eutectic Si and the role of the oxide bifilms and AlP as a heterogeneous substrate of Fe intermetallics are also discussed.

Abstract:The as-cast Al-4.6Mg alloy was subjected to deformation and sensitization–desensitization heat treatment, and then the microstructure and the enhancement mechanism of Sr were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectroscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The precipitation phases of Al-4.6Mg alloy were mainly β-Al3Mg2, Al6Mn, and Al6(Mn Cr), and the nanoscale precipitation phases were Al3Mn and Al11Mn4. The formation of β-Al3Mg2 was hindered by the addition of 0.1 wt.% Sr. In addition, the precipitate phase Al4Sr and the nano-sized precipitate phase τ-Al38Mg58Sr4 were uniformly distributed in the spherical matrix. The addition of Sr promoted the redissolution of Mg atoms in Al-4.6 Mg alloy, increasing the solubility of Mg in the α-Al matrix from 4.7 wt.% to 5.1 wt.%. The microstructure analysis showed that Sr addition inhibited the recovery and recrystallization of the alloy because the Sr element elevated the recrystallization temperature. As a result, the grain deformation was intensified, the grain size was decreased from 6.96 μm to 5.39 μm, the low-angle grain boundaries were increased from 78.7 at % to 84.6 at %, and the high-angle grain boundaries were increased from 21.3 at % to 15.4 at %. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the alloy were significantly improved, and the plasticity degraded after the addition of the Sr element. The yield strength of the alloy was enhanced mainly through fine grain strengthening, dispersion strengthening, solid solution strengthening, and working hardening. The strengthening mechanisms were analyzed in detail.

Effects of Strontium and Boron Interactions in Al-7si Alloys

Abstract:Effects of boron and strontium combined treatment on the microstructure of hypoeutectic Al-7Si alloy have been studied. Experimental results show that strontium has no significant effect on the grain refinement efficiency of boron and the eutectic silicon modification efficiency is not only related to the strontium content but also related to the boron content in the Al-7Si alloy melt. There is a negative interaction between boron and strontium that results in the formation of a strontium-boron-aluminum containing compound; which reduces the effective strontium level and decreases the eutectic silicon modification efficiency substantially. The refinement and modification mechanisms remain unchanged after the combined addition of strontium and boron. Based on the experimental results, a model for assessing the modification level in the Al-Si alloy melts after combined addition of boron and strontium was presented.

Abstract:The effects of strontium modification on the structure and dynamics of Al88Si12 liquid are studied by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. By replacing 0.5% and 4.0% of Al with Sr, we show that the addition of Sr lowers the self-diffusion of Al and Si of the liquid and reduces the nearest-neighbor correlation between Si atoms. The simulation provides an explanation for the change in morphology of the eutectic phases observed in rapidly solidified Al-Si alloys modified with Sr.

Abstract:The Aluminum–Silicon (Al–Si) die-casting alloys, such as the commercial A356 alloy, are expected to be used in heat-sink and the device with high thermal conductivity due to their high production efficiency of casting process. These fields also required them to possess sound mechanical properties. To meet these demands, the Strontium (Sr) was often utilized to modify the silicon phase. According to our current work, the secondary dendrite arm spacing of the α-Al grains prominently was decreased when 0.05%–0.25% strontium was added. The decrease of the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) lead to the enhancement of the mechanical strength as well as the improvement of the thermal and electrical conductivity. When the Sr dosage was 0.15% in the commercial A356 alloy, the strength and the thermal conductivity of the A356 alloy simultaneously reached the maximum value. The improvement of the electrical and thermal conductivity might by contributed by the formation of a good conductor, Al2Si2Sr phase, on the Si surface. Further investigations suggested that the improvement of thermal conductivity was mainly due to the modification effect of Sr on the eutectic Si phase, which enlarged the specific area between the α-Al/eutectic Si interface. The WDS analysis indicated that the solubility of Si decreased in aluminum matrix by increasing in the Sr dosage. However, the excessive dosage of strontium would result in the coarsening of the modified silicon phase, deteriorating the strength and the thermal and electrical conductivity of the modified A356 alloys.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic </h3> In this work, the commercial A356 alloy was modified by adding small amounts of strontium (Sr). This kind of aluminum alloy with sound fluidity could be formed by using casting process, and it was potential to be applied in the structural parts. After the Sr modification, the plate-like silicon (Si) phase was transformed to fibrous shape in the raw commercial A356. Meanwhile, it was found that the content of silicon in the Al solid solution was reduced.The XRD and SEM analysis suggested that the Al2Si2Sr phase was formed on the modified silicon phase, which was favorable to the conduction of free electron.

Abstract:Sr has been widely used to convert the faceted needle-like eutectic Si to fibrous Si particles for producing automotive engines, pistons, and wheels made of Al–Si–Cu alloys. However, its application to recycled Al–Si–Cu alloys has not been investigated in details, especially how needle-like Fe-rich intermetallics can transformed into less harmful phases. In this study, the influence of minor additions at 0.015 and 0.03 wt% Sr has been quantified by using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) at a micrometer resolution. It has been found that half of the needle-like β-Fe intermetallics have transformed into a compact α -Fe phase as a result of 0.015 wt% Sr addition. Further increasing the Sr level to 0.03 wt% resulted in the majority of the needle-like phases transforming into less harmful crystal structures including fibrous Si and blocky α -Fe, leading to an increase in elongation by 90.47%. In addition, the first-principles calculations have shown that Sr has a strong affinity to vacancy and interfaces, prohibiting the nucleation of eutectic Si and porosity. Therefore, the porosity number density decreased from 274.72 to 91.26 mm −3 , and the eutectic Si number density increased from 13,061.27 to 42,449.13 mm −2 . First-principles calculations and quantification of blocky Fe-rich intermetallics replacing needle-like morphology as a function of Sr addition uncover that Sr–Al–Si co-segregation to the low interfacial energy α -Al/Fe-rich intermetallics interface cut the diffusion path of Fe along faceted planes at elevated temperature, promoting twinning by alternating stacking sequences along the high Miller index planes.

Abstract:Al–Si–Cu–Ni–Mg–(Zr, Sr) alloys were prepared by permanent mold gravity casting. The effects of Zr and Sr on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Al-12Si-6Cu-1.5Ni-1.3Mg alloy at room temperature and high temperature were investigated systematically using X-ray diffractometer (XRD), ultra-depth-of-field metallographic microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electronic universal testing machine. The experimental results show that the size of eutectic Si phase and Al–Cu–Ni phase is decreased with the addition of Zr, and it has little effect on the primary Si phase. The massive primary Si phase of the alloy with 0.1%Zr + 0.04%Sr addition disappears, and the eutectic Si phase changes from acicular to fibrous phase, which has little effect on the size of the Al–Cu–Ni phase. The ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the alloy with 0.1%Zr + 0.04%Sr addition at room temperature are 360 MPa, 318 MPa and 4.2%, respectively. The ultimate tensile strength and elongation of the alloy with 0.1%Zr addition at high temperatures are 194 MPa, 4.3%, 117 MPa, 7.5% at 275 °C and 350 °C, respectively.

Analysis of Fe-, Cu-, Mg- and Sr-Based Phases in Al–Si Alloys: Role of P Addition

Abstract:The present work was performed on experimental Al–Si near eutectic cast alloys, with different additives mainly Fe, Mg, Mn, Cr, Sr and P. The alloys were solidified at 0.8°C/s, very close to equilibrium conditions. Precipitated phases, primarily Fe-, Cu-, Mg-, and Sr-based intermetallics, were examined. Although the phases reported in the present work were documented previously, the range of chemical composition of each phase was confirmed using an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) equipped with wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (WDS) and electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) facilities. Some of these alloys were cast in the form of hardness test pieces using a steel permanent mold preheated at 425 °C that provided a microstructure with an average dendrite arm spacing (DAS) of ~22 μm. The test pieces were solution heat treated at 500 ± 2 °C for times up to 24 h, followed by artificial aging at 155 °C for 5 h (T6 treatment). Hardness tests were carried out on the heat-treated test pieces. It was found that addition of Sr decreased the hardness. The role of P addition (AlP) on the nucleation of primary Si particles has been discussed. Although the addition of P in terms of 30 ppm leads to refining of the primary Si particles, the P-Sr interaction has a marked negative effect of the modification of the eutectic Si particles.

Abstract:The hot deformation behaviors of Al-4.6Mg and Al-4.6Mg-0.2 Sr alloys at temperatures of 300–450 °C and strain rates of 0.001–1 s−1 were comparatively studied. Optical microscopy (OM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to study the effect of Sr on the microstructures of the alloys. The constitutive equations of Al-4.6Mg and Al-4.6Mg-0.2 Sr alloys were established. The apparent activation energies of the two alloys were 165.632 and 157.456 kJ/mol, respectively. The microscopic analysis showed that Sr had no significant effect on the grains of the as-cast Al-4.6Mg alloy, the precipitation phase changed, and the needle-like Al4Sr phase was formed. During isothermal compression (IC), both alloy samples consisted of slender grains and new quasi-equiaxed grains. Compared with the Al-4.6Mg alloy, the Al-4.6Mg-0.2 Sr alloy had a lower LnZ value, a smaller grain size, and more sufficient dynamic recovery (DRV); in addition, the grain growth of the Al-4.6Mg-0.2 Sr alloy was suppressed. The main textures of the Al-4.6Mg alloy were Goss and cubic textures, which were replaced by cubic and brass textures after adding Sr. During the IC of the Al-4.6Mg-0.2 Sr alloy, a nanoscale precipitated τ phase, which was uniformly distributed inside spherical grains, was formed.

Abstract:The synergistic effect between strontium (Sr) and melt quenching on the solidified microstructure of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that melt quenching can suppress the growth of primary Si particles in the solidified structure of the hypereutectic Al-Si alloy, resulting in a significant decrease of in the average size of primary Si particles in Al-(18~22)Si alloys from 30.35~66.31 μm to 15.13~34.63 μm. The synergistic effect between Sr and melt quenching can further inhibit the precipitation of primary Si particles in the Al-18Si alloy. After the addition of Sr to Al-18Si alloy and undergoing melt quenching, the area fraction of primary Si clearly decreases. When the added amount of Sr increases from 0.1 wt.% to 0.5 wt.%, the area fraction of primary Si decreases from 1.13% to 0.16%. With 0.5 wt.% Sr in the tested alloy, the inhibiting effect on primary Si precipitation was significantly improved. Research has shown that the cooling rate has a significant impact on the solidified structure of the melt-quenched Al-18Si-0.5Sr alloy. There exists no primary Si in solidified structures on the area of 1/8R and 1/4R from the surface of the round bar sample, but the area fraction of primary Si increases, respectively, to 1.97% and 12.48% on the area of 1/2R and R from the surface. The higher the cooling rate, the higher the inhibitory effect on the primary Si precipitation in the Al-18Si-0.5Sr alloy.

Abstract:The effects of Sr modification on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity of the hypoeutectic Al-13.6Cu-6Si alloy were thoroughly investigated in the past using techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, cooling curve thermal analysis (CA-CCTA), universal testing machine, and laser thermal conductivity analyzer. The findings showed that the introduction of an appropriate amount of Sr into the alloy resulted in additional undercooling, enhancing the rate of non-uniform nucleation and significantly refining the α -Al grains. Furthermore, it effectively modified the morphology of eutectic silicon phases, transforming the plate-like structure into a fine and uniform coral-like appearance. Notably, the optimal modification effect was achieved with the addition of 0.3% Sr. Compared to the alloy without Sr modification, the secondary dendrite arm spacing of α -Al in the alloy was reduced from 14.26 to 9.23 μm. Additionally, the thermal conductivity, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation were significantly of the alloy increased to 130.1 W/(m K), 322 MPa, and 4.6%, respectively, representing an improvement of 10, 19, and 53%, respectively.

Abstract:The effect of Ti and Sr on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-Si-Cu-Ni alloy was studied. Research showd that the addition of 0.1% Ti and 0.02% Sr significantly reduced grain size and changed the morphology of eutectic Si. Sr promoted the formation of stacking faults and nano-Al 2 Cu. The strength and plasticity were significantly increased with ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation being 239.6 MPa, 140.6 MPa, and 2.11%, respectively.

Abstract:The effect of strontium (Sr) addition (0.2 at.%) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys were studied. Microstructure of the alloys was observed by scanning electron microscope, and their phase compositions were analyzed with X-ray diffraction and Electro-Probe Microanalyzer. The room temperature fracture toughness was measured. The results indicated that the phases of Nbss and Nb 3 Si were presented in Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys. However, with the Al and Sr addition, the alloys were composed of Nbss and β-Nb 5 Si 3 . Compared with the Nb-12Si-22Ti alloys, the value of room temperature fracture toughness increased about 46% and 73% with the addition of Al and Sr alloy, respectively. The relationship between the microstructure and the mechanical properties was discussed.
