Abstract:Measurement of particle velocity in fluidized beds is always technically difficult. A new method based on cross-correlation principle was proposed to calculate time-averaged velocity of particles. Considering the different reliabilities of signal segments, a cross-correlation coefficient was introduced into the formula for calculating time-averaged velocity. A PV6D optical fiber probe was used to obtain original signals in a fluidized bed with 200 mm i.d., and the time-averaged velocities calculated from three different methods were compared. The calculated particle volume flow rates based on different velocity calculating methods indicate that the method proposed in this paper is more reliable. Based on this method, particle time-averaged velocity was measured at different heights in the transition section of a turbulent fluidized bed. A modified three-zone drag law model was used to predict the flow structure of particles with clustering behavior. The experimental and simulation results both indicate that, from the transition section to the dilute section, particle velocity of the core region rises at first and then declines, the radial velocity distribution changes from a steep curve to a flat one, and then becomes steep again. This result depends on both solid concentration distribution and gas velocity distribution.

Abstract:As for the turbulent two-phase flow in the non-circular duct, the flow could show an anisotropic turbulence feature in liquid phase because of the existence of a transverse circulatory flow named a second-kind of secondary flow. In this study, a bubbly upward turbulent flow in a large square duct has been conducted. As the preliminary measurement, an axial mean velocity of liquid single-phase flow was measured by a Pitot tube at a cross-sectional average velocity of 0.4 m/s. Its isotach was distorted towards the corner of the duct. In addition, the local void fraction distribution was measured by the optical probe system. The result showed a tendency to have a peak at the corner of the duct.

Abstract:Particle instantaneous velocities were measured by a laser-Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in a vertical channel, where particles were supplied from the top of the channel and gas superficial velocity was close to zero. According to kinetic theory of granular flows, particle instantaneous velocities are decomposed into two components, a local Eulerian velocity that represents bulk motion of neighboring particles and a residual component, by three different local averaged methods. Results indicate that the local averaged method based on inter-particle collision time fails to accurately estimate the rapid variation of local Eulerian velocity. In contrast, the local Eulerian velocity estimated by both the simple moving averaged method and the robust local regression method could well represent the collective motions of neighboring particles. Moreover, the magnitude of the residual component (i.e., granular temperature) estimated by the robust local regression method was less sensitive to the number of neighboring data points used in the decomposition process. Overall trends of granular temperature and particle-phase turbulent kinetic energy in the wall normal direction are different from each other, indicating that the granular temperature and particle-phase turbulent kinetic energy must be treated separately to accurately predict energy balance. The probability density function of the residual component is compared with a Gaussian distribution. At the center of the channel, it follows a Gaussian distribution, while in the vicinity of the wall it retains a long tail.

Abstract:Based on photodiode array, an optical measurement system is established for gas-liquid two-phase flow in small tubes. A method is proposed for characterization and flow regime identification of gas-liquid two-phase flow. In the experiment, different flow regimes are observed in a horizontal glass tube with inner diameter of 4.02mm and outer diameter of 6.12mm, and voltage signals are obtained from the 8-element photodiode array through sensing circuits. Probability density function (PDF) and Fourier transform are used for the analysis on signal characteristics of flow regimes. To identify flow regimes, eigenvalues of the statistics are calculated, then the principal component analysis (PCA) is implemented to reduce the dimensionality of data sets, finally support vector machine (SVM) is applied for identification. Experimental results show that the optical system based on photodiode array is effective in the measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow parameters in small tubes. The proposed method proves effective in characterization and flow regime identification of gas-liquid two-phase flow, and the experimental results are satisfactory.

Abstract:A measurement system is developed for the parameter detection and flow characterization of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel. Electrical capacitance measurement system and optical measurement system are designed for the micro-channels with different inner diameters of 4.0 mm, 3.1 mm and 1.8 mm respectively. In experiment, bubble flow, stratified flow, slug flow and annular flow are observed. PSD (Power Spectrum Density) and PDF (Probability Density Function) methods are used to analyze the capacitance and optical signals. The results show that the stratified flow can not be observed in the pipe with inner diameter of 1.8 mm, and that the PSD and PDF curve can be used to characterize different flow regimes of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel. So the constructed measurement system is effective, and can be used to analyze flow characteristics and identify flow regime of gas-liquid two-phase flow in micro-channel.

Abstract:As for the turbulent two-phase flow in the non-circular duct, the flow could show an anisotropic turbulence feature in liquid phase. In this study, the air-water bubbly turbulent upward flow experiment in the large square duct with the inside cross-section of 136mm×136mm has been conducted. Since the bubble size is very important for air-water bubbly flows, the bubble generating method was improved to get more uniform bubble size. After confirming the flow symmetry in the measuring cross-section, the distributions of local void fraction, bubble frequency and primary liquid velocity were measured by a hot-film anemometry, and the bubble behaviors were also investigated by using the high-speed video camera. The results show that the bubbles tend to accumulate to the wall region, where the liquid primary velocity shows the maximum especially at the corner.

Abstract:In nuclear engineering fields, gas-liquid bubbly flows exist in channels with various shape and size cross-sections. Although many experiments have been carried out especially in circular pipes, those in a noncircular duct are very limited. To contribute to the development of gas-liquid bubbly flow model for a noncircular duct, detail measurements for the air-water bubbly flow in a square duct (side length: 0.136m) were carried out by an X-type hot-film anemometry and a multi-sensor optical probe. Local flow parameters of the void fraction, bubble diameter, bubble frequency, axial liquid velocity and turbulent kinetic energy were measured in 11 two-phase flow conditions. These flow conditions covered bubbly flow with the area-averaged void fraction ranging from 0.069 to 0.172. A pronounced corner peak of the void fraction was observed in a quarter square area of a measuring cross-section. Due to a high bubble concentration in the corner, the maximum values of both axial liquid velocity and turbulent kinetic energy intensity were located in the corner region. It was pointed out that an effect of the corner on accumulating bubble in the corner region changed the distributions of axial liquid velocity and turbulent kinetic energy intensity significantly.

Abstract:The measurement of two-phase velocities in bubble flows using laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) is studied. The key to the problem is to differentiate the LDV signals from bubbles and tracers, based on which the two-phase velocities can be characterized. In this study, two experiments are carried out. Firstly, the bubble-chain experiment is performed to investigate the optical response of bubble surface and the corresponding LDV signal. The optical response shows that the light received by the LDV detector is dominated by the reflection component, which is similar to specular reflection to some extent. There are three typical patterns of signals of large bubbles passing through the measurement volume, all of which are with high amplitude and saturated. Then, the upward-flow experiment is conducted to study the statistical characteristics of large bubbles as well as micro tracers and micro bubbles. The results show that the amplitude of signal of millimeter bubbles is about an order of magnitude larger than that of tracers or micro bubbles. Based on this significant difference of the amplitude, we propose a phase discrimination method to distinguish two-phase signals. The capability of the proposed method is tested in a complex bubble flow, and its reliability is verified by bubble tracking velocimetry (BTV) technology.

Abstract:Particle descent velocities in an annular stripper were measured by a laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) system. In the radial direction, particle descent velocity was relatively constant in the mid-region of the stripper and increased towards the walls on both sides, exhibiting an anti-U-shaped distribution. Particle descent velocity in the radial mid-region increased with the increase of superficial gas velocity, and the maximum in the outer wall region increased significantly with the increase of solid mass flux. Superficial stripping gas velocity had stronger effect on particle velocity distributions near the stripper gas distributor, and such effect weakened with the increase of the distance from the distributor. Local particle velocity and its radial profiles could be adjusted by changing the superficial stripping gas velocity. Empirical formulas were established to describe the relationships between the local particle velocity and cross-sectional averaged velocity based on the effects of operating conditions and measuring positions. The result showed that the predicted data was in good agreement with the experimental value.

Abstract:The present paper was devoted to improving the understanding and modeling of upward turbulent bubbly flow (TBF) in the large noncircular duct. Recent experiments of the upward TBF in a large vertical square duct showed a significant peak of the axial liquid phase velocity ( W l ) near the corner and wall except the pronounced corner and wall peak of the void fraction [1]. However, few observations of such significant velocity peak were reported near the wall in the currently existed circular-pipe database except slightly peak. The paper presents the analysis on the formation of the typical shape of W l by considering an index to show the shape of velocity profile and the formation condition of the typical M-shape. The index to show the shape of the velocity profile was discussed. It indicates the flow with smaller wall resistance, larger and steeper profile of the void fraction is easier to form M-shaped velocity profile. Besides, it was obtained that for the upward TBF in the large square duct, there may exist two layers with different flow types between the wall and center.

Abstract:Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique, a new method for the velocity measurement of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow is proposed. First,two conductivity signals of gas-liquid two-phase flow are obtained by the new C~4D sensor, then by cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity of gas-liquid two-phase flow is obtained.As a preliminary research,two typical flow patterns of mini-channel gas-liquid two-phase flow,bubble flow and slug flow,are studied in velocity measurement experiments.Experimental results,which are carried out in three horizontal mini-channels with different inner-diameters,show that C~4D technique is feasible for the velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow.The maximum velocity measurement relative error is less than 10%and the proposed method for velocity measurement of gas-liquid two-phase flow is effective.

Abstract:The pressure fluctuation in the wake is an important parameter to characterize the shedding process of gas-liquid two-phase Karman vortex street. This paper investigated such pressure fluctuations in a horizontal pipe using air and water as the tested fluid media. The dynamic signal representing the pressure fluctuation was acquired by the duct-wall differential pressure method. Results show that in the wake of the gas-liquid two-phase Karman vortex street, the frequency of the pressure fluctuation is linear with the Reynolds number when the volume void fraction is within the range of 18%. Moreover, the mean amplitude of the pressure fluctuation decreases with the volume void fraction, and the mean amplitude is larger at higher water flowrates under the same volume void fraction. These findings contribute to an in-depth understanding of the gas-liquid two-phase Karman vortex street.

Abstract:An experiment has recently been carried out to recognize the flow pattern and to measure the void fraction of gas–liquid two-phase flow in vertical upward pipes at Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU). The test fluid in this experiment is the air and water. The experimental system includes a closed water loop, an open air loop, inlet and outlet header, vertical upward parallel pipes, a high speed camera system and a gamma densitometer system. The inlet header, outlet header and vertical upward pipes are made of transparent glass and acrylic fabric, and the purpose is for bubbly flow, slug flow and annular flow patterns visualization. In this present study, firstly, the flow patterns of the two-phase flow are identified by the high speed camera system and gamma densitometer system. Secondly, the void fraction of the two-phase flow is measured by the gamma densitometer, and the results are compared with the quick-closing valve measurement. Thirdly, the variations of the flow patterns with the void fraction are also discussed in the present study. Finally, the experimental results in present study are compared with some calculated (predicted) correlations.

Abstract:A dual-plane Electrical Resistance Tomography (ERT) system is employed to combine ERT with cross correlation technique to measure the gas phase volumetric flowrate in gas-liquid flows in vertical upward pipe. According to the uniformity of the local void fraction distribution and the velocity distribution of gas phase, pixel-correlation method and eigenvalue-correlation method are put forward to estimate the gas phase volumetric flowrate. This paper compares the two estimate methods and makes preliminary study of the applicability of the two methods. Two experiments were designed to evaluate the validity of those two estimate methods. Experimental results were presented to analyze their characters respectively.

Abstract:Experimental studies of air–water two-phase flows in a mini tube with an inner diameter of 3.12 mm have been conducted in terms of the flow pattern, void fraction, and pressure gradients. The fluid velocities range from 0.065 to 21.78 m/s and from 0.109 to 1.835 m/s, respectively. A right-angle prism is applied to capture images simultaneously from two perpendicular directions. Three-dimensional gas–liquid interfaces are reconstructed with the obtained images from two directions. The gas void fraction is investigated using this method, which is experimentally validated with the quick closing valves method. Three flow patterns are obtained in the present work, which is bubbly, slug, and annular flows. The Probability Density Functions of the cross-sectional void fraction show that the intermittent flow has two peaks and the annular flow has only one peak. Volumetric void fraction is affected by the flow pattern and the flow rate. However, at very high gas velocities, volumetric void fraction is independent of the liquid rate. A new frictional pressure drop correlation is proposed based on the experimental data.

Pressure Drop Characteristics of Vertical Dilute-phase Gas Conveying

Abstract:An experimental study of gas conveying of Geldart-D powder in dilute phase through a vertical pipe upwards for 18 m with internal diameter 0.05 m upwards for 18 m was conducted. The pressure drop, choking velocity, minimum fluidized velocity for fluidized bed tank and mass flow rate were measured. The values of fs obtained from the experimental pressure drop in the vertical pipe were the same as those predicted by the correlation presented by Klinzing and Mathur, Yang and Caric. The process of calculating fs also showed that the actual solids velocity, calculated from Eq.2 in the paper, in the conveying pipe was the true value. The experimental results showed that the ratio of pressure gradient along 135( upward bend, 135( downward bend and inclined pipe to the vertical pipe were 1.6, 2.0 and 4.0 respectively.

Abstract:The first quantity measurement on gas-solid two-phase flow in the typical louver concentrator was made by using two-dimensional phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Gas-solid two-phase flow field features in this louver concentrator were obtained. By analyzing a number of experimental results, the gas-solid separation mechanism, and the namely concentration mechanism were discussed. The effect of gas-solid two-phase flow on the performance of louver concentrator was quantitative by explained.

Abstract:Dense phase pneumatic conveying is significant for high efficiency combustion technology of pulverized coal in a boiler.By a two-dimensional Dual PDA system,the velocity of gas-solid two-phase flow was measured respectively in a rectangular cross-section bend with 25 mm in hydraulic diameter and 600 mm in bend radius.Thus, the distribution of two-dimensional time-averaged velocity and route mean square of velocity in three typical cross-sections under the conditions of critical conveying were obtained.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The fully developed flow of air and solid particles in a vertical pipe was calculated using a modified model for particle-eddy interaction in two-phase turbulent flows, which is developed from the particle-source-in-cell model. This model was proposed to account for the effects of the fluctuation frequency spectrum of turbulent gas flow on the motion of particle phase and the influence of particles on the gas turbulent flow. In order to validate this modified model, the flow characteristics of a turbulent upward gas-solid pipe flow was studied both numerically and experimentally. Various combinations of loading and particle diameter were investigated. Velocities of both phases, turbulence intensities, and volume fraction distributions were obtained. The predictions were compared with experimental data measured by the use of a laser Doppler anemometer showing that the overall agreement is good.

Abstract:<p>The local phase distribution of adiabatic air-water two-phase flow in churn-turbulent to annular flows was experimentally investigated using the Two-Sensor Droplet-Capable Conductivity Probe. The experiments were performed in a 2.54 cm inner diameter vertical round pipe at downward flows. Twelve flow conditions in churn-turbulent to annular flows were chosen for the current study. The inlet superficial gas velocity ranged from 5.68 m/s to 17.19 m/s, and the inlet superficial liquid velocity ranged from 1.21 m/s to 2.64 m/s. The DCCP-2 is able to distinguish droplets, liquid ligaments, bubbles, and continuous gas. The radial profiles of volume fraction, frequency, axial interfacial velocity, and chord length of droplets, ligaments and bubbles were measured. The experimental results showed that gas volume fraction had a center-peak distribution, and the maximum gas volume fraction in centerline could exceed 95%. The volume fraction of droplets was very low, only on the order of 0.1 %. Droplet concentration also showed a center-peak distribution. Both ligament and bubble volume fraction showed a near-wall peak distribution. The ligament volume fraction in the near wall region could reach 80%, which indicated the existence of a film region near the wall and likely includes surface waves on the film. The volume fraction profile of gas, droplets, ligaments, and bubbles showed the tomography structure in churn-turbulent to annular flows. The effects of flow conditions on phase distribution were also studied. An interesting feature was that both the increase of gas flux and the increase of liquid flux tended to increase the bubble volume fraction. The statistical distribution of droplet size was found to be invariant of radial position. The droplet velocity at centerline was generally larger than the superficial gas velocity, which can be attributed to the gravitational effects at downward flows.</p>
