Abstract:The focus of the acid gas removal process has shifted from decarbonization and desulfurization to desulfurization in the context of integrating coal chemical technology with green H2 without a water gas shift unit. The conventional Rectisol process, Selexol process, organic amine process, and sulfone-amine process have been reconfigured to form the R-Rectisol process, R-Selexol process, R-MDEA process, and R-Sulfolane-MDEA process to adapt to the shift of acid gas removal target. The removal efficiency of H2S and CO2, process energy consumption, and process cost are investigated to evaluate the technical and economic performance of the above four reconfigured acid gas removal processes. The results indicate that for the R-Recitsol process and R-Selexol process, both high pressure and low temperature increase the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2, thereby enhancing the selective removal of H2S. In contrast, for the R-MDEA process and R-Sulfolane-MDEA process, low pressure and low temperature improve the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2, thereby facilitating the selective removal of H2S. Under optimal operating conditions, the value of relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the RSulfolane-MDEA process is the largest, and the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the R-Rectisol process, RSelexol process and R-MDEA process are only 7.64 %, 12.85 %, and 68.40 % of the relative selectivity of H2S to CO2 of the R-Sulfolane-MDEA process, respectively. Compared to the other three reconfigured acid gas removal processes, the R-Sulfolane-MDEA process demonstrates superior advantages in both energy consumption and economic feasibility, provided that the H2S levels remain below 0.1 ppm in purified syngas. This study aims to enhance the decision-making process for gas purification methods in the coal chemical industry by considering integrated green H2 as an alternative to the water gas shift unit.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the research progress of the removal of hydrogen sulfide from coal gas by the dry method with activated-carbon, metal oxides, complex metal oxides and activated-carbon supported metal oxides.The characteristics of activated-carbon and metal oxides as sorbents are analyzed, including treatment temperature, desulfurization efficiency and regeneration, etc.The complex metal oxides and activated-carbon supported metal oxides are regarded as prospective sorbents for industrial applications and have better performance during desulfurization and regeneration.According to the mechanisms of desulfurization, it is feasible to prepare sorbents for desulfurization with semi-coke and metal oxides due to the similarity of semi-coke and activated carbon in their properties.

Influences of temperature and oxygen on the transformation mechanism of H2S were studied by chemical kinetics. It is concluded from the study that the main productions of H2S vary with the reaction conditions, COS is mainly produced in highly reducing conditions and SO2is dominant production under oxidizing atmosphere. Peak concentration of S2only can be obtained at mildly reducing conditions and moderate temperature; meanwhile, most of H2S is oxidized to SO2when the temperature is above 1300K. Abstract:With the rapid development of iron and steel industry, high temperature coking has become an important application of coal. H2S of coke oven gas(COG) and its combustion products --SO2 has aroused more and more concern for the negative effects on environment and human health. The total coke production is about 335.53 Mt in 2007, and the caused SO2 emission is reported at about 181.19 kt. In reference to future development objectives and pollution control technologies of coking industry, the future reduction potential of SO2 emissions from coking is analyzed on the basis of coking technological progress, process improvement and industrial restructuring. It shows that the potential of SO2 emissions reduction will be 90.35 kt by 2010, and it will amount to 252.49 kt by 2015, which will be a good support to the energy-saving and emission-reduction targets of the country.

Abstract:Carbon consumption of activated carbon varies with sulfur-containing products. In this work, differential thermogravimetric (DTG), electron paramagnetic resonance (ESR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) we re used to reveal the adsorption-regeneration process of H2S and the effect of adsorption products on carbon consumption. The results show that H2S reacts with the C=C bond to form the C-S bond as an intermediate state, followed by the formation of elemental sulfur. It directly sublimates at approximately 380 °C, about 30 °C higher than the decomposition temperature of H2SO4. In the thermal regeneration process, the elemental sulfur in the form of monoclinic sulfur (S8) first breaks into infinitely long chain molecules (S∞) and then into small molecules, finally into sulfur vapor. The desorption of elemental sulfur consumes less oxygen and carbon functional groups, reducing the chemical carbon consumption by 59.8% than H2SO4; moreover, the compressive strength reduces less due to its slight effect on the disordered graphitic structure. H2S also reacts with the C=O bond to form H2SO3 or H2SO4. The desorption of H2SO3 does not require carbon consumption. The decomposition of H2SO4 needs to react with the C=C bond to release SO2, CO2, and CO, and the compressive strength of activated carbon significantly decreases. The carbon consumption originates from two aspects; the one from the regeneration of sulfur-containing products is more than twice the other one from the decomposition of oxygen-containing functional groups.

Organic Sulphur Transfers in Coke Oven Gas Via Noncatalytic Partial Oxidation

Abstract:The organic sulfur transformation was studied during coke oven gas to produce syngas via noncatalytic partial oxidation. The concentration of CS 2 and thiophene was examined in syngas by sulfide detector. For comparison, the sulfur transfer was also studied in coke oven gas under dry and hydrous conditions. When the ratio of O 2 /Gas was 0.32, complete thiophene and about 83% of CS 2 in feed gas could be transformed via noncatalytic partial oxidation in the dry condition. It was mainly because of burner nozzle unique structure forming local hyperthemia, which benefited OH, O free radical and active atoms. During steam transforming to produce syngas, the ratio of water to carbon was less than 3, a higher ratio of O 2 /Gas favored sulfur transformation. However, compared to dry feed, transforming rate of CS 2 and thiophene was decreased. This indicates that the steam added was disadvantageous to the transformation of organic sulphur during the production of syngas by noncatalytic partial oxidation, steam and mass H 2 S in feed gas, resulting in the decrease of local hyperthermia temperature and the formation of organic sulfur.

Abstract:This paper presents a detailed kinetic study of H2S oxidation with presence of CO2 under fuel rich condition. Effect of CO2 reactivity on the partial oxidation of H2S was particularly studied via tube furnace experiment and detailed kinetic analysis with CHEMKIN-PRO softward. A detailed kinetic model involving 90 species and 596 reactions was developed and validated using experimental data with respect to production of H-2, and conversions of CO2 and H2S under different conditions by altering the initial gas composition temperature and residence time. In the tube furnace experiment, it was found that decomposition of H2S and conversion of CO2 were promoted by increase in temperature while H-2 production decreased and CO concentration evidently increased at temperature higher than 1450 K, which could be explained by CO2 + H = CO + OH. The degree of this reaction as features the major reactivity of CO2 is obviously dependent on residence time whilst H2S partial oxidation proceeds much swiftly at 1473 K or higher temperature. In addition to the experiment, rate of production (ROP) analysis for H2S, H and OH were performed by CHEMKIN-PRO. It was found for the partial oxidation of H2S, reactions S + SH = S-2 + H and SH + SH = H + HSS are important in H producing while H2S + 0 = SH + OH and H2O2(+M)= OH + OH(+M) are key steps for OH producing. Presence of CO2 prolonged the OH production process via CO2 + H = CO + OH to the whole residence time which definitely differed from the condition without CO2. Thereby production selectivity of SO2 and H2O was promoted while that of H-2 and S-2 were degraded when CO2 was considerably present in the H2S partial oxidation scenario. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A bench-scale fluidized bed reactor is used to investigate H2S evolution and analyze various factors influencing sulfur distribution in gas and semi-coke during coal pyrolysis. The tests results show rising temperature increases the amount of H2S evolution and partial pressure of hydrogen enhances hydrogen sulfide release during coal decompose at 800-950 degrees C. While apart from other researches results, effect occurs obviously on H2S emission at 10 percent of hydrogen concentration, and the effect begins to decrease with H-2 concentration rise even to 55 percent. The partial pressure of hydrogen not only enhances directly on formation of H2S, some reactions of H-2 with other gaseous sulfur probably may take effects.

Abstract:Desulfurization remains a critical yet challenging aspect of producing high-quality metallurgical coke through pyrolysis. Previous studies have suggested that introducing hydrogen-rich gases may improve sulfur removal efficiency. To further explore this approach, we investigated the effects of volatile matter on sulfur migration during co-pyrolysis of high-sulfur coal (SC) with both fat coal (FC) and lean coal (LC). Our findings indicate that most sulfur is transferred into the coke during pyrolysis, with sulfide and pyrite being relatively easy to decompose, while thiophenes and sulfones tend to be thermally stable. Co-pyrolysis with FC significantly decreased sulfur content in the final coke product, while co-pyrolysis with LC resulted in higher sulfur content. The comparative analysis points to the beneficial influence of volatile matter in promoting desulfurization through enhanced sulfur transfer into the gas phase and reduced sulfur fixation with nascent coke. These findings offer practical guidance for coke-making industries to optimize coal blending scheme and to achieve efficient desulfurization during coke-making.

Study On The Kinetics Of Total Sulphur Removal From Coal Using Coke-Oven Gas In Semi-Continuous Reactor

Abstract:The effects of temperature, treatment time and amount of potassium hydroxide on the coal weight loss and the total sulfur removal from Tongshan coal with coke-oven gas by semi-continuous reactor were studied. The results showed that the sulphur content of the residue significantly decreased with increasing temperature (823 to 923 K) and treatment time (0 to 90 min.) at 1 atm. absolute pressure, while the coal weight loss slightly increased with treatment time. The kinetics of the heterogeneous hydrodesulfurization of coal with coke-oven gas was investigated. The special rate constant obtained showed a true Arrhenius temperature dependence. Some amount of potassium hydroxide, which was introduced into the coal, significantly enhanced the coal sulfur removal. The total sulfur removal increased with KOH amount from 0-10% and then decreased.

Abstract:Coal supercritical water gasification (SCWG) is famous for generating clean gas without SOx pollutant. Study of sulfur transformation characteristics can provide the basis of sulfur removal during hydrogen production by coal gasification in supercritical water (SCW) at the source. In this work, two coals produced from Linfen and Zhangjiamao in China (hereinafter to be referred as L-coal and Z-coal), were chosen as experimental feedstocks to investigate sulfur transformation characteristics during hydrogen production by coal gasification in SCW (550-750 degrees C, 20 min, 25 MPa). Sulfur transformation pathway and sulfur forms in the products were complex but detected comprehensively. H2S was the only gaseous product instead of SOx, whereas SO42- was the main liquid sulfur product. Inorganic and organic sulfur compounds were used to investigate sulfur transformation mechanisms. H2S had three sources as follows. First, among inorganic sulfur of raw coal, FeS2 (Pyrite) was chemically stable in SCW lacking of hydrogen. When FeS2 was in hydrogen atmosphere, H2S was generated and FeS2 was converted to Fe1-xS and Fe3O4 under SCW. Second, H2S came from unstable sulfate minerals such as FeSO4 which may decompose and be converted to Fe3O4. Third, organic sulfur, especially thiophene sulfur transformed to H2S. The two sulfur products H2S and SO42- depend on H or OH free radical in SCW. More H free radical provided a reducing environment of SCW to generate H2S at higher temperatures, whereas more OH radical provided an oxidizing environment of SCW to generate SO42- at lower temperatures, but the final trend was generating H2S when coal gasified completely at a higher temperature. The results of this study may provide an experimental basis of solving the SOx emission from coal at the source and demonstrate a promising clean utilization way of coal.

Abstract:CO2 is an important component in the acid gas and it is necessary to study the effect of CO2 presence on the oxy-fuel combustion of H2S with particular focus on the formation of carbonyl sulfide(COS).The oxy-fuel combustion of acid gas was conducted in a coaxial jet double channel burner.The distribution of flame temperature and products under stoichiometric condition along axial(R-0.0)and radial at about 3.0 mm(R-0.75)were analyzed,respectively.The Chemkin-Pro software was used to analyze the rate of production(ROP)for gas products and the reaction pathway of acid gas combustion.Both experimental and simulation results showed that acid gas combustion experienced the H2S chemical decomposition,H2S oxidation and accompanied by H2 oxidation.The CO2 presence reduced the peak flame temperature and triggered the formation of COS in the flame area.COS formation at R-0.0 was mainly through the reaction of CO2 and CO with sulfur species,whereas at R-0.75 it was through the reaction of CO with sulfur species.The ROP results indicated that H2 was mainly from H2O decomposition in the H2S oxida-tion stage,and COS was formed by the reaction of CO2 with H2S.ROP and other detailed analysis further revealed the role of H,OH and SH radicals in each stage of H2S conversion.This study revealed the COS formation mechanisms with CO2 presence in the oxy-fuel combustion of H2S and could offer important insights for pollutant control.

Abstract:More and more coking enterprises are facing the problem of excessive sulfur content in coking light benzene products. However, due to the complexity of coking production process and the unknown influencing factors and rules, enterprises often cannot take effective measures. Based on the coking and gas purification process of a typical coking enterprise in China, with the help of specially designed gas sampling and sulfur content detection methods, this paper explores and analyzes the influence of coal, the main sections of gas purification and important liquid substances on sulfur content in light benzene, and puts forward feasible optimization control measures, which can provide useful reference and guidance for coking enterprises in the same industry.
High Yield of CO and Synchronous S Recovery from the Conversion of CO2 and H2S in Natural Gas Based on a Novel Electrochemical Reactor

Abstract:H2S and CO2 are the main impurities in raw natural gas, which needs to be purified before use. However, the comprehensive utilization of H2S and CO2 has been ignored. Herein, we proposed a fully resource-based method to convert toxic gas H2S and greenhouse gas CO2 synchronously into CO and elemental S by using a novel electrochemical reactor. The special designs include that, in the anodic chamber, H2S was oxidized rapidly to S based on the I-/I-3(-) cyclic redox system to avoid anode passivation. On the other hand, in the cathodic chamber, CO2 was rapidly and selectively reduced to CO based on a porous carbon gas diffusion electrode (GDE) modified with polytetrafluoroethylene and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). A high Faraday efficiency (>95%) toward CO was achieved due to the enhanced mass transfer of CO2 on the GDE and the presence of the selective CoPc catalyst. The maximum energy efficiency of the system was more than 72.41% with a current density of over 50 mA/cm(2), which was 12.5 times higher than what was previously reported on the H2S treatment system. The yields of S and CO were 24.94 mg.cm(-2).h(-1) and 19.93 mL.cm(-2).h(-1), respectively. A model analysis determined that the operation cost of the synchronous utilization of H2S and CO2 method was slightly lower than that of the single utilization of H2S in the existing natural gas purification technology. Overall, this paper provides efficient and simultaneous conversion of H2S and CO2 into S and CO.

Abstract:Sweetening process is essential in removing H2S and CO2 from refinery gases for environmental and safety concerns. In industrial production, owing to the investment cost, multiple sour gases with various compositions are premixed and sent to a single sweetening plant, leading to unnecessary energy consumption caused by ignoring characteristics of each sour gas. Therefore, the multiple gas feeds absorption was analyzed through orthogonal test method and sensitivity analysis. Moreover, a pre-allocation of raw gases along with multi-feeding operation was proposed to optimize the temperature and concentration distribution in the absorber, so that the mass transfer was significantly strengthened. Based on this, a sweetening process with multiple gas feeds was developed to realize the simultaneous optimization of mass and energy. The rigorous simulation was carried out and the model validity had been verified with experimental and industrial data. Finally, a refinery in Shandong, China was taken as an example. With the proposed process, the purity of H2S in acid gas was increased by 2.55%, while the energy consumption and the overall exergy loss were reduced by 6.5% and 18.75%, respectively.

Abstract:Co-pyrolysis with oxygen-lean waste tires could improve the quality of pyrolytic oil from the bio-wastes while H2S/COS generated during co-pyrolysis process has a negative impact on the utilization of oil/syngas as well as the flue gas pollution control. Compared to traditional wet desulfurization process, high-temperature desulfurization via molten carbonates could reduce heat loss and favor the recycling of captured sulfur. Notably, small-molecule pyrolytic gases might change the species of sulfur-containing gases and promote the re-emission of absorbed sulfur from the molten salts. To fully understand the effects of pyrolysis gases (H2/CO/H2O/CO2) on molten salts desulfurization efficiency as well as mutual conversion mechanism of H2S and COS, equilibrium compositions calculations and adsorption experiments were carried out in the present study. The results showed that H2/CO had few effects on molten salts desulfurization performance and mutual conversion of H2S/COS. In contrast, CO2 and H2O had obvious adverse effects on desulfurization efficiency through the transferring of free S2− into emitted sulfur-containing gases. More specifically, only a small amount of CO2 reacted with S2− to produce COS while more S2− was converted to H2S and released from the reactor outlet when H2O was introduced. Fortunately, the impact of H2O or CO2 on molten salts desulfurization could be weakened with the addition of CaCO3 by transferring the molten free S2− into precipitated CaS. Besides, multi-stage desulfurization units connected in series and parallel were proposed and estimated, which was confirmed to show good performance to maintain the high desulfurization efficiency from the complicated pyrolytic gases.

Abstract:A Chinese moderate sulfur coal contains pyrite even and fine was studied in this work, and a tubular reactor used to study the effect of H2 and CO on the removing of sulfur in the coal. The results show that the sulfur in the coal can be released as the H2S under the H2 atmosphere, and the release in the form of COS under the CO atmosphere. According the experimental data derived from this work shows that under the reductive gas pyrolysis can not remove more sulfur let the coal char product with lower sulfur. But, it is can transform more sulfur from tar into gas phase.
