Abstract:Two new species of Yushania (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Arundinarieae) are described and illustrated from South China: Yushania longshanensis D.Z. Li & X.Y. Ye and Yushania stoloniforma D.Z. Li & X.Y. Ye.Yushania longshanensis and Y. stoloniforma have distinctive morphological characters which can be used to distinguish them from putative close allies.Yushania gigantea T.P. Yi & L. Yang is treated as a synonym and Y. microphylla T.P. Yi & L. Yang is replaced by a new name.Two new species of Yushania (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Arundinarieae) are described and illustrated from Hunan, China. Yushania longshanensis D.Z. Li & X.Y. Ye is distinguished from related species (Y. confusa, Y. angustifolia and Y. pachyclada) by having a thinner culm (0.2-0.3 cm in diameter), glabrous sheath scar, no oral setae, a large glabrous leaf blade (10-20 × 0.9-1.3 cm) and 3-4 pairs of secondary veins. Yushania stoloniforma D.Z. Li & X.Y. Ye has a distinctive scrambling habit, which differs from its putative close allies. Both of these two new species have a solitary branch at the basal nodes and can be assigned to the section Yushania based on morphological features. Additionally, we treated Yushania gigantea T.P. Yi & L. Yang as a new synonym of Yushania elevata T.P. Yi and renamed Yushania microphylla T.P. Yi & L. Yang as Yushania weiningensis D.Z. Li & X.Y. Ye.

Abstract:In our ongoing research on bambusicolous Xylariomycetidae fungi, three new microfungi taxa were collected and identified as members of the genera Amphibambusa , Arecophila , and Nigropunctata . Amphibambusa aureae sp. nov. , Arecophila gaofengensis sp. nov. , and Nigropunctata xiaohensis sp. nov. are introduced based on morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses using combined ITS , LSU, tub2 , and tef 1α loci. Comprehensive morphological descriptions, illustrations, and a phylogenetic tree showcasing the placement of these new taxa are provided. Additionally, keys to Amphibambusa and Nigropunctata are provided.

Abstract:Based on field surveys and a review of literature and herbarium specimens, three new Begonia in section Platycentrum from South China are confirmed and reported with morphological descriptions and illustrations, namely Begonia liangguangensis D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou, B. shaoqingii D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou, and B. qinzhouensis D.K.Tian & J.Y.Zhou. These three new species are morphologically compared with their allied species. Their conservation statuses are provisionally assessed as Endangered, Endangered, and Critically Endangered, respectively, according to Guidelines for Using IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:A new bamboo species, Yushania dezhui , from Kunming, Yunnan, China is described and illustrated in this paper. The new species used to be misidentified as Y. polytricha . Based on careful comparison of morphological features and molecular phylogeny evidence, we confirmed its identity as a new member of the genus Yushania . Yushania dezhui resembles Y. maculata , Y. polytricha and Y. weixiensis in several aspects, such as culm height and branch complement structure. However, the glabrous culm leaf sheaths and internodes, the absence of auricles and oral setae on most foliage leaves, except the one-year-old foliage leaves, the pubescence on the adaxial surface of the one-year-old foliage leaves and its limestone habitat preference can readily distinguish this new species from its related taxa. Moreover, we emphasise that individuals from various populations and molecular markers with different inheritance patterns for phylogeny reconstruction should be included in new species discovery, especially in plant groups with complex evolutionary histories.

Abstract:Taxonomic studies of saprobic ascomycetes in Thailand and China revealed two new taxa belonging to the family Bambusicolaceae. Bambusicola fusispora sp. nov. isolated from dead branches of Gigantochloa albociliata in Thailand and Palmiascoma qujingense sp. nov. isolated from dead twigs of Fagaceae sp. in Yunnan, China, are described and illustrated in this study. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood, and Bayesian inference analyses of a concatenated LSU–SSU–ITS–RPB2 sequence matrix support their phylogenetic placement within the Bambusicolaceae. Bambusicola fusispora fits in well within the generic concept of Bambusicola and shares close phylogenetic affinities with B. sichuanensis. Palmiascoma qujingense is introduced as the second species in the genus Palmiascoma and is sister to P. gregariascomum, the generic type. Palmiascoma qujingense exhibits a similar morphology to P. gregariascomum, but differs in having larger ascomata, wider ascospores as well as occurs on different hosts. An updated phylogeny of taxa within Bambusicolaceae is provided and discussed for better resolution of species delineation.

Abstract:Morphological comparisons and multi locus phylogenetic analyses (base on the combined genes of ITS , LSU, rpb 2 and tub ) demonstrated that three new saprobic taxa isolated from bamboo belong to Cainiaceae . These taxa comprise a novel genus Paramphibambusa ( P. bambusicola sp. nov. ) and two new species, Arecophila xishuangbannaensis and A. zhaotongensis . The three new taxa belong to Cainiaceae ( Xylariales , Sordariomycetes ) a poorly studied family, which now comprises eight genera. Paramphibambusa can be distinguished from other Cainiaceae genera in having ascomata with a neck and ascospores lacking longitudinal striation, germ slits or germ pores. The two new Arecophila species clustered in a clade with Arecophila sp. and A. bambusae . Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations, and an updated phylogenetic tree are provided for the new taxa.

Abstract:Chimonobambusa pleiacantha , a newly-identified species of the genus Chimonobambusa Makino from southeast Sichuan, China, is meticulously described and illustrated herein. It is morphologically similar to Ch. tuberculata , but differs in having 4-angled internodes, thicker wall to 4.5–8.5 mm, more reclinate and elongated root thorns to 5–8 mm long, culm internodes with three grooves and two longitudinal ridges on the branch-bearing side, persistent culm leaves, densely brown-purple setose at the bottom of culm leaf sheaths together with sheath scar, developed foliage leaf fimbriae, 6–8 on each shoulder, ca. 3–8 mm long, abaxially white pubescent foliage leaf blades. Phenologically, new shoots usually appear in September to October. In the light of these key morphological and phenological characteristics, Ch. pleiacantha was identified as a new species of the genus Ch. Makino which is different from published species of this genus.

Abstract:Neomicrocalamus and Temochloa are closely-related genera for which 'inflorescence' structures were incompletely understood and difficult to reconcile. After re-examining the inflorescence morphology, the so-called 'spikelets' of both genera as described should instead be recognised as pseudospikelets with mostly inactive axillary buds. The new bamboo taxa, comprising two varieties of a new species, are placed in Temochloa, representing a new genus record for China and Vietnam.

Abstract:In the present study, we surveyed the ascomycetes from bamboo of Phyllostachys across Sichuan Province, China. A biphasic approach based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogeny confirmed seven species, including one new genus, two new species, and five new host record species. A novel genus Paralloneottiosporina is introduced to accommodate Pa. sichuanensis that was collected from leaves of Phyllostachys violascens. Moreover, the newly introduced species Bifusisporella sichuanensis was isolated from leaves of P. edulis, and five species were newly recorded on bamboos, four species belonging to Apiospora, viz. Ap. yunnana, Ap. neosubglobosa, Ap. jiangxiensis, and Ap. hydei, and the last species, Seriascoma yunnanense, isolated from dead culms of P. heterocycla. Morphologically similar and phylogenetically related taxa were compared. Comprehensive descriptions, color photo plates of micromorphology are provided.

New Insights into Tetraplosphaeriaceae Based on Taxonomic Investigations of Bambusicolous Fungi and Freshwater Fungi

Abstract:Species within Tetraplosphaeriaceae have been frequently documented in recent years with the extensive investigations of microfungi along a latitudinal gradient from north to south in the Asian/Australian region. Both bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats serve as extensive reservoirs, hosting a rich diversity of fungi that exhibit broad geographical distributions. The most common fungi in these two environments are generally distributed in distinct families. However, our statistics have revealed an intriguingly distinct preference of Tetraplosphaeriaceae species for inhabiting both bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats. The genera Pseudotetraploa (100%) and Triplosphaeria (100%) exhibit a strong preference, followed by Shrungabeeja (71%) and Quadricrura (67%). Our taxonomic and phylogenetic study of microfungi in southern China have identified four additional novel species, viz., Aquatisphaeria bambusae sp. nov., Pseudotetraploa phyllostachydis sp. nov., Pseudotetraploa yangjiangensis sp. nov., and Tetraploa submersa sp. nov. from bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats. In addition, Aquatisphaeria thailandica has previously been documented from freshwater habitats in Thailand; however, we have once again isolated this species from decaying bamboo substrates in Guangdong, China. The new findings substantiate our hypothesis that the preference of Tetraplosphaeriaceae species for colonizing bamboo substrates and freshwater habitats will be more evident through more extensive investigations conducted in such environments.

Abstract:Chimonobambusa farcta , a new species of temperate woody bamboos from western Guangxi, China is described and illustrated. The new species is similar to C. pubescens in the solid internodes of culms, but differs in having taller culm to 7 m with longer verrucose internodes to 23.5 cm and intranodes to 4 mm, intranode usually with a ring of 7–9 root thorns below mid-culm, abaxially brown or brown-purple verrucose-setose culm leaf sheaths with indistinct transverse veins, conspicuously developed culm leaf blades to 3.2 cm long, longer foliage leaf sheaths to 5.2 cm, larger and broader foliage leaf blades to 22 × 1.4 cm. It also somewhat resembles C. convoluta , but can be easily distinguished by having solid internodes and longer intranode 2–4 mm, very prominent nodes with supranodal ridge obviously more elevated than sheath scar, usually persistent and sometimes brownish striate culm leaf sheaths, longer culm leaf blades to 3.2 cm, and abaxially glabrous foliage leaf sheaths. Based on the morphological characteristics, this new species is assigned to C. sect. Chimonobambusa . The character description of C. pubescens are revised for its culm to 2.1 m tall, 1.1 cm in diameter and glabrous foliage leaf blades. The systematic position of C. luzhiensis is discussed, and this species is proposed as a member of C. sect. Chimonobambusa .

Abstract:As the supplement of the flora of Zhejiang, East China, two new species were described with illustrations. Cerastiumhuadingense Y.F.Lu, W.Y.Xie & X.F.Jin (Caryophyllaceae) differs from C.qingliangfengicum in having sterile stems absent, leaves sessile, petals slightly longer than sepals, and stamens slightly shorter than sepals. Ixeridiumdimorphifolium Y.L.Xu, Y.F.Lu & X.Cai (Asteraceae) differs from I.beauverdianum in having plant stoloniferous, basal leaves dimorphic, involucre 8‒10 mm long, inner phyllaries 8, and florets 7‒10. Paraphlomissetulosa C.Y.Wu & H.W.Li (Lamiaceae) was reviewed and morphological characters of the corolla and stamens of its type and the specimens collected in the field survey were critically examined. With barbate anthers and strongly divergent anther cells, Paraphlomissetulosa was transferred to Sinopogonanthera, and S.setulosa (C.Y.Wu & H.W.Li) H.W.Zhang & X.F.Jin was consequently combined.

Abstract:During our ongoing studies of bambusicolous fungi in southwest China and Thailand, three saprobic pleosporalean taxa were discovered on bamboos in Yunnan Province of China. Occultibambusa hongheensis and Seriascoma bambusae spp. nov. are introduced based on morphological characteristics coupled with multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, TEF1-α, RPB2 and ITS sequence data. Occultibambusa kunmingensis is also reported from a terrestrial habitat for the first time. Comprehensive descriptions, color photo plates of micromorphology, and a phylogenetic tree showing the placements of these three taxa are provided. In addition, synopsis tables of Occultibambusa and Seriascoma with morphological features are also provided.
Taxonomic notes on Alpinia brevis and A. bambusifolia (Zingiberaceae)

Abstract:The identities and nomenclature histories of two endemic gingers from China, viz. Alpinia brevis and A. bambusifolia, are reviewed. Alpinia brevis was previously thought to be a widespread species, distributed in Hainan, Guangxi and Yunnan, while A. bambusifolia was known to be endemic to Guangxi. Nevertheless, the results in this study suggest that the collections from Guangxi and Yunnan were misidentified as A. brevis, those of which from Guangxi should belong to A. jianganfeng or Globba aff. racemosa, while those from Yunnan should belong to A. bambusifolia. The treatment that A. nanchuanensis is a synonym of A. bambusifolia is supported by our studies. After this revision, A. brevis is restricted to Hainan, while A. bambusifolia occurs in Chongqing, Guangxi, Guizhou and Yunnan, China. Lectotype is designated for A. nanchuanensis here.

Novel hyphomycetous fungi associated with bamboo from Sichuan, China

Abstract:During an ongoing investigation of bambusicolous fungi in Sichuan province, China, five hyphomycetous taxa were collected and recognized as members of Sordariomycetes. Based on morphological comparisons, culture characteristics, and the multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of combined SSU, ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tef1α sequence dataset, five species, viz. Conioscypha sichuanensis, Conlarium guizhouense, Rhexoacrodictys fimicola, R. melanospora, Wongia bambusae are identified. Conioscypha sichuanensis formed a sister lineage to Conio. bambusicola, which was also found from a bamboo host but can be distinguished from Conio. sichuanensis by different conidial shape. Wongia bambusae is characterized by unbranched, septate conidiophores and cylindric-fusiform conidia, and is most similar to W. ficherai. However, they are phylogenetically distinct. Conlarium guizhouense and R. melanospora, were recollected from the bamboo hosts in terrestrial habitats and reported as new host records in this study. Detailed descriptions and notes on the phylogenetic placement of these species are provided.

Abstract:Asexual and sexual morphs of saprobic bambusicolous fungi were collected from freshwater and terrestrial habitats in Sichuan Province, China. Taxonomic identification of these fungi was carried out on the basis of morphological comparison, culture characteristics, and molecular phylogeny. Multi-gene phylogeny based on combined SSU, ITS, LSU, rpb2, and tef1α sequence data was performed to determine their phylogenetic placement, and the result showed that these fungi belong to Savoryellaceae. Morphologically, four asexual morphs are similar to Canalisporium and Dematiosporium, while a sexual morph well-fits to Savoryella. Three new species, Canalisporium sichuanense, Dematiosporium bambusicola, and Savoryella bambusicola are identified and described. Two new records, C. dehongense and D. aquaticum, were recovered from the bamboo hosts in terrestrial and freshwater habitats, respectively. In addition, the nomenclatural confusion of C. dehongense and C. thailandense is discussed.

Abstract:Parabambusicolaceae is a well-studied family in Massarineae, Pleosporales, comprising nine genera and approximately 16 species. The family was introduced to accommodate saprobic bambusicola-like species in both freshwater and terrestrial environments that mostly occur on bamboos and grasses but are also found on different host substrates. In the present study, we surveyed and collected ascomycetes from bamboo and submerged grass across Yunnan Province, China. A biphasic approach based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogeny demonstrated five new taxa in Parabambusicolaceae. A novel genus Scolecohyalosporium is introduced as a monotypic genus to accommodate S. submersum sp. nov., collected from dead culms of grass submerged in a freshwater stream. The genus is unique in forming filiform ascospores, which differ from other known genera in Parabambusicolaceae. Multigene phylogeny showed that the genus has a close relationship with Multiseptospora. Moreover, the novel monotypic genus Neomultiseptospora, isolated from bamboo, was introduced to accommodate N. yunnanensis sp. nov. Neomultiseptospora yunnanensis formed a separated branch basal to Scolecohyalosporium submersum and Multiseptospora thailandica with high support (100% ML, 1.00 PP). Furthermore, the newly introduced species, Parabambusicola hongheensis sp. nov. was also isolated from bamboo in terrestrial habitats. Parabambusicola hongheensis clustered with the other three described Parabambusicola species and has a close relationship with P. bambusina with significant support (88% ML, 1.00 PP). Parabambusicola hongheensis was reported as the fourth species in this genus. Detailed description, illustration, and updated phylogeny of Parabambusicolaceae were provided.
