Abstract:A new species, Smilax weniae (Smilacaceae), from Southwest China, is described and illustrated. The new species bears peltate leaves, which was previously a unique feature of S. luei. However, it differs from the latter by having a broad ovate leaf blade, longer peduncle, and sexual dimorphic flowers. Further phylogenetic analyses revealed that the new species were placed in a unique position in a subclade of Old World Smilax based on ptDNA and nrITS sequences. Combining detailed morphological comparisons and molecular evidence, we validated that S. weniae is an undescribed new species. Moreover, the plastome characteristics of S. weniae are reported.

Abstract:Amana yunmengensis, a new species from Yunmeng Lakes region in China is described and illustrated in this study. It resembles A. edulis and A. baohuaensis but differs in several features. The principal components analysis of morphological data identified four distinct clusters: A. anhuiensis, A. edulis, A. hejiaqingii and A. yunmengensis. Cytological observation revealed that A. yunmengensis is diploid (2n = 2x = 24). Molecular phylogenetic analyses further support it as a new species.

Abstract:A new species of the genus Boulenophrys is described from the coastal hills of eastern Fujian Province, China. The new taxon can be distinguished from all recognized congeners by a combination of discrete morphological character state differences and genetic divergences in the combined mitochondrial 16S + CO1 genes. We also provide a map showing the distribution pattern of Boulenophrys species in Fujian and a provincial-specific key, which will aid their conservation by helping the local authorities accurately identify species during field identifications and data collection efforts.

Abstract:Elsholtzia zhongyangii (Lamiaceae), a new species from Sichuan Province, China, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to E. feddei f. feddei, but it can be easily distinguished from E. feddei f. feddei by smaller corolla (3.2–3.5 mm vs. 4.5–5.3 mm), bract indumentum (glabrous, except margin ciliate vs. villous, especially on veins abaxially, glabrous adaxially) and bract stalked (ca. 1.2 mm vs. sessile). Phylogenetic analyses, based on two nuclear ribosomal (ETS, ITS) and five plastid (rbcL, matK, trnL-F, ycf1, ycf1-rps15) regions, confirmed that the new species formed a monophyletic clade with robust support. The new species is currently known from western Sichuan.

Abstract:A new ascomycete species, inhabiting decaying bamboo culms, is introduced in this paper based on morphology and molecular evidence. Analyses of partial LSU sequence data place the taxon in a monophyletic clade within the order Pleosporales . Morphological characters of the taxon are also distinct from other members of Pleosporales . Ligninsphaeria jonesii gen. et sp. nov. is therefore introduced to accommodate the new taxon, which is characterized by its clypeate, scattered, deeply immersed ascomata, with a slit-like opening, long ostioles, cellular pseudoparaphyses, clavate asci containing broad-fusiform and 1-septate ascospores surrounded by a gelatinous cap at both ends. The phylogenetic analyses show that the new taxon is phylogenetically close but distinct from the families Amniculicolaceae and Testudinaceae , and forms a distinct clade from other taxa in Pleosporales . The new taxon is described and compared with similar taxa. A new genus Ligninsphaeria (Pleosporales, incertae sedis ) is introduced to accommodate this distinct lineage.

Abstract:Yunnan Province (China) is one of the most bamboo-rich regions in the world. In this study, a saprophytic fungus was collected from dead bamboo in Yunnan Province. Based on molecular phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, SSU, and tef1-α sequence data, our collections grouped within Linocarpon and formed a separate clade with high statistical support. The morphological comparison showed that our collections has some characteristics such as semi-immersed ascomata, fusiform asci, and ascospores with 28–30 septa, which are different from other species in Linocarpon. Therefore, based on morpho-phylogenetic evidence, our collection is identified as a new bambusicolous species in China and named Linocarpon bambusina sp. nov. A full description, photo plate, and a phylogenetic tree are provided for the new species.

Abstract:Two new species of Moellendorffia Ancey, 1887 and one new species of Moellendorffiella Pilsbry, 1905 are described from China, namely Moellendorffia gulinensis sp. nov. from southeastern Sichuan Province, Moellendorffia wuchaoi sp. nov. from eastern Hainan Island, and Moellendorffiella yifengi sp. nov. from southeastern Yunnan Province. Shell characters and habitats are illustrated, and a distribution map of the new species is provided. Moellendorffia trisinuata trisinuata and Moellendorffiella erdmanni are re-examined and illustrated using newly collected specimens. The generic diagnosis of Moellendorffiella is supplemented.

Abstract:A new species of Thismia (Thismiaceae), T. jianfenglingensis, is described and illustrated from Hainan Island, China. The new species is similar to T. hongkongensis, displaying a urecolate perianth tube, a loose dome with six perianth lobes, six stamens, and three stigmas. T. jianfenglingensis differs from T. hongkongensis in the color and morphology of perianth tube, the position of outer perianth lobes, the morphology and appendage of connective apex, the morphology of stigmas. The new species is only reported to occur on Hainan Island, China and it is proposed to be Vulnerable (VU) according to the IUCN criteria for the conservation status of plant species due to having a population with a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations such that it is prone to become critically endangered or even extinct in a very short time period.

Abstract:Herein we describe a new species. Leptobrachella yunyangensis sp. nov., from Yunyang County, Chongqing City, China, based on a combination of molecular and morphological data. Phylogenetic analysis based on the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene and six nuclear genes indicated that this new species represented an independent evolutionary lineage. The uncorrected genetic distance between the new species and its closest congener species, L oshanensis, was 5.4 % for 16S rRNA. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following characters (1) moderate body size (SVL 283-30.6 mm in males); (2) rough dorsal skin, with sparse large granules and tubercles and short longitudinal ridges on the shoulder; (3) distinctly discernible tympanum with a diameter smaller than that of the eye (TMP/EYE ratio: 0.51) and a distinct black supratympanic line present; (4) an internasal distance almost equal to interorbital distance (IND/IOD ratio: 1.05); (5) flanks with several dark spots arranged longitudinally in two rows, (6) distinctly visible supra-axillary, femoral, pectoral, and ventrolateral glands; (7) bicolored iris, with the upper 1/3 of the iris being copper orange and the lower 2/3 a light silvery grey; (8) relative finger lengths of I < II = IV < III and relative toe lengths of I < II < V < III < IV; (9) absence of webbing and lateral fringes on fingers, and toes with rudimentary webbing and narrow lateral fringes (10) heels overlapping when the thighs are positioned at right angles to the body; (11) tibiotarsal articulation reaching to the anterior corner of the eye when the leg is stretched forward; (12) ventral surfaces of the throat, chest, and belly greyish white with purple-brown speckling; (13) lacking distinct blackish dorsolateral markings; and (14) transverse dark brown bars on the surfaces of limbs and digits.

Abstract:Two new taxa of Zhuliangomyces, Z. bambusus and Z. terrus, from Hainan Province of China, a tropical region, are proposed based on morphology and molecular systematics. Zhuliangomyces bambusus is characterized by its light brown basidiomata with a grayish tone at age, striate pileus margin, a viscid annulus, predominantly subglobose basidiospores, abundant clamp connections, and habitat in bamboo duff. Zhuliangomyces terrus possesses a chocolate or dark brown pileus when young, brown to pale brown when mature, a non-striate pileus margin, a viscid annulus, predominantly broadly ellipsoid basidiospores, plentiful clamp connections, and it fruits on soil. These two new species are distinctive from related species in the genus Zhuliangomyces, forming two well-supported monophyletic lineages in the phylogenetic tree of the concatenated dataset of ITS-LSU. This is also the first time that the genus is found in tropical China. A key to this genus is also provided.

Abstract:Abstract Bamboo bats are a group of small bats with unique skull and morphology. They roost inside hollow bamboo stems in tropical and subtropical Asia and the Ambon Islands (Moluccas). We examined 53 specimens of Tylonycteris from southern and southwestern China. Comparisons of skull and external characteristics, pelage color, shapes of thumbpads and footpads, and statistical analysis of cranial measurements revealed that specimens from Damenglong, Jinghong County, Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, are distinctly different from the other two species of Tylonycteris described so far. The Yunnan specimens are the smallest in size; have dark blackish brown pelage color; and have larger upper premolars, smaller first lower premolars, and longer C-M3. They are sympatric with the previously described species. Here we review the genus Tylonycteri and describe a new species, Tylonycteris pygmaeus, from the Yunnan material.

Abstract:During an ongoing survey on fungal diversity in Sichuan Province, China, a white filamentous fungus growing on decaying marbled bamboo ( Chimonobambusa marmoreal ) leaves was collected. Upon conducting the initial morphological diagnosis and BLASTn searches, the new collection was assigned to the genus Arthrobotrys . A multi-locus phylogeny, based on a concatenated dataset (SSU-ITS-LSU- TEF1 - RPB2 ), revealed the new collection in close phylogenetic proximity to Arthrobotrys eryuanensis and A. hyrcanus . However, they differ in shape and size of conidia. The conidia of the new collection are comparatively shorter than those of A. hyrcanus and wider than those of A. eryuanensis . Based on the difference in morphology and molecular data, we proposed the new collection as a new species, Arthrobotrys chinensis sp. nov. Detailed morphological characteristics, illustrations, and an updated phylogeny is provided for the new species.

Abstract:Abstract— Beilschmiedia mengwangensis , a new species of Beilschmiedia (Lauraceae) from Yunnan Province, Southwest China, is here described and illustrated based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence. The new species is morphologically similar and phylogenetically closely related to Beilschmiedia brachythyrsa . However, it can be distinguished from Beilschmiedia brachythyrsa by having larger fruits, longer and thicker fruiting pedicels, larger leaf blades, and more lateral veins. Taxonomic keys for identification are also provided in this study.

Abstract:During the ongoing investigation of bambusicolous ascomycetous fungi in Yunnan, China, 24 specimens belonging to the family Roussoellaceae were collected and identified based on morphological features and phylogenetic support. Maximum-likelihood (ML) analyses and Bayesian analyses were generated based on the combined data set of ITS, LSU, tef1, and rpb2 loci. The phylogenetic analyses revealed four novel lineages in Roussoella s. str.; thus, we introduced four new species viz., Roussoella multiloculate sp. nov., R. papillate sp. nov., R. sinensis sp. nov., and R. uniloculata sp. nov. Their morphological characters were compared with the known Roussoella taxa, which lack sequence data in the GenBank. Asexual morphs of R. kunmingensis and R. padinae were recorded from dead bamboo culms in China (from the natural substrates) for the first time. Neoroussoella bambusae, Roussoella japanensis, R. nitidula, R. padinae, R. scabrispora, and R. tuberculate were also reported as the first records from China. All new taxa are described and illustrated in detail. Plates are provided for new reports.

Abstract:A new spikemoss species, Selaginellawuyishanensis, is described and illustrated based on materials collected from Fujian Province, East China. The new species can be distinguished from S.lutchuensis Koidzumi and S.albociliata P. S. Wang by its leaves with extremely long cilia (up to 8 mm) and distinctly white margins, ovate ventral sporophylls, and sporophyll-pteryx completely inverted on dorsal sporophylls. In the present work, a molecular phylogeny, taxonomic description, distribution information, line drawing, and photographs of this new species are presented. A morphological comparison is also given to distinguish it from morphologically similar species in Selaginellasect.Tetragonostachyae (Hook. & Grev.) Hieron. & Sadeb.

Abstract:Abstract A new species of the spionid genus Lindaspio Blake & Maciolek, 1992 was collected from a cold seep near the Hainan Island at a depth of 1758 m. Morphologically, Lindaspiopolybranchiatasp. nov. differs from the congeners in having a narrow, folded caruncle and more neuropodial branchiae (from chaetiger 20). The 18S, COI, and 16S sequences of the new species have been submitted to GenBank. It is the first record of the genus Lindaspio from Chinese waters. A key to all species of Lindaspio is given.
