Abstract:On the basis of resistively-shunted junction dynamics, we study vortex dynamics in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays with asymmetrically single and bimodulated periodic pinning potential for the full range of vortex density f. The ratchet effect occurring at a certain range of temperature, current, and f, is observed in our simulation. We explain the microscopic behavior behind this effect by analyzing the vortex distribution and interaction. The reversal of the ratchet effect can be observed at several f values for a small driven current. This effect is stronger when the asymmetric potential is simultaneously introduced in two directions.

Abstract:Using resistivity-shunted-junction dynamics, we model bond dilutions in Josephson junction arrays. The current-voltage characteristics are obtained by large-scale numerical simulations. By dynamic scaling analysis to the finite-temperature phase transition, we provide clear evidence for the existence of non-Kosterlitz–Thouless-type phase transition, as described by Kosterlitz et al. [J. Phys. C 6, 1181 (1973); J. Phys. C 7, 1046 (1974)] in a wide range of disorder strengths. Critical temperature and exponents of the phase transitions are estimated, which are further confirmed by the finite-size scaling analysis at the transition temperature.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the intriguing effects produced by random percolative disorder in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays. By dynamic scaling analysis, we evaluate critical temperatures and critical exponents with high accuracy. It is observed that with the introduction of site-diluted disorder, the Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition is eliminated and evolves into a continuous transition with power-law divergent correlation length. Moreover, genuine depinning transition and creep motion are studied; evidence for distinct creep motion types is provided. Our results not only are in good agreement with the recent experimental findings but also shed some light on the relevant phase transitions.

Abstract:Based on the resistively shunted junction dynamics, we numerically investigate the superconducting phase transitions of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a dilute external field with the magnetic flux density f=1/25. Dynamic scaling analysis of current-voltage characteristics shows that a Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskii (KTB) phase transition occurs at a finite temperature in the absence of disorder. When the disorder is introduced into the bond, the phase transition would be driven into a non-KTB type, where a possible glass transition is suggested. The effects of the bond disorder on the critical temperature and critical exponents are also discussed. The further experimental works to realize well known KTB and glass transitions in Josephson junction arrays are clearly called for.

Abstract:The current–voltage characteristics of a positionally disordered superconducting Josephson-junction network are investigated numerically. An efficient algorithm is proposed which enables one to simulate networks with up to 1024×1024 nodes. The I–V curves are highly nonlinear in the ordered phase. For a given temperature and external current, it is observed that the resistivity increases with disorder strength. This is in contrast to the behaviour of type-II superconductors in the mixed state where disorder reduces the resistivity through vortex pinning.
Dynamical Phase Transition in Two-Dimensional Fully Frustrated Josephson Junction Arrays with Resistively Shunted Junction Dynamics

Abstract:. The dynamical phase transitions in two-dimensional fully frustrated Josephson junction arrays at zero temperature are investigated numerically with the resistively shunted junction model through the fluctuating twist boundary condition. The model is subjected to a driving current with nonzero orthogonal components i x , i y parallel to both axes of the square lattice. We find a roughly lattice size independent phase diagram with three dynamical phases: a pinned vortex lattice phase, a moving vortex lattice phase and a moving plastic phase. The phase diagram shows a direct transition from the pinned vortex to the moving vortex phase and the separation of the pinned vortex and the moving plastic phases. The time-dependent voltages v x and v y are periodic in the moving vortex lattice phase. But they are aperiodic in the moving plastic phase, resulting in non-monotonic characteristics and hysteresis in the current-voltage curves. It is found that the characteristic frequency is twice the time-averaged voltage in the moving vortex phase and around the time-averaged voltage in the plastic flow regime.

Abstract:The stochastic stability of a Duffing oscillator with fractional derivative damping under combined harmonic and Poisson white noise parametric excitations is investigated. A stochastic averaging method and the Khasminskii's procedure are applied to evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent. Then the asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of the original system is determined approximately by using the largest Lyapunov exponent. Finally, the analytical results are verified by those from the Monte Carlo simulation of the original system.

Abstract:In this paper, the asymptotic stability with probability one of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping parametrically excited by Gaussian white noises is investigated. A stochastic averaging method and the Khasminskii’s procedure are employed to evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent, whose sign determines the stability of the system. As an example, two coupled nonlinear oscillators with fractional derivative damping is worked out to demonstrate the proposed procedure and to examine the effect of fractional order on the stochastic stability of system. In particular, the case of factional order more than 1 is studied for the first time.

Abstract:The stochastic stability of the harmonically and randomly excited Duffing oscillator with damping modeled by a fractional derivative of Caputo’s definition is analyzed. First, the system state is approximately described by Itô equations through the stochastic averaging method based on the generalized harmonic function. Then, the associated expression for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the linearized averaged Itô is derived, and the necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability with probability one of the trivial solution of the original system is obtained approximately by letting the largest Lyapunov exponent be negative. The effects of fractional orders and random excitation intensities on the asymptotic stability with probability one determined by the largest Lyapunov exponent are shown graphically.

Abstract:Usually, overdamped Josephson junctions do not exhibit chaotic behavior in their phase dynamics, either because the phase space dimension is less than three (as in the case of a single overdamped ac-driven junction) or due to the general tendency of systems to become less chaotic with increasing dissipation (as in the case of coupled overdamped junctions). Here we consider the so-called $\varphi_0$ superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor Josephson junction in which the current flowing through the junction may induce magnetization dynamics in the ferromagnetic interlayer. We find that due to the induced magnetization dynamics, even in the overdamped limit, i.e. for a junction without capacitance, the junction may exhibit chaos and hysteresis that in some cases leads to multiple branches in its current-voltage characteristics. We also show that pulsed current signals can be used to switch between the different voltage states, even in the presence of added thermal noise. Such switching could be used in cryogenic memory components.

Abstract:The quasi-particle IV curve of a Josephson tunnel junction is approximated using piece-wise linearization with slopes of 1/R1 over the gap voltage, 1/R2 below it and a vertical segment in between. Thus the original equation with nonlinear damping is replaced by two equations with different linear dampings. By solving these two equations in the proper regions of phase plane and joining together the phase trajectories across the boundary, we are able to find the stable periodic solution to the original equation from which much information can be deduced. As an example, a calculation of the minimum current, below which the junction will switch from non-zero voltage state to zero voltage state, is given. The calculated relationship between the minimum current and the critical pair-current density agrees well with the experimental data.

Abstract:Abstract Duffing oscillator with delayed feedback is widely used in engineering. Chaos in such system plays an important role in the dynamic response of the system, which may lead to the collapse of the system. Therefore, it is necessary and significant to study the chaotic dynamical behaviors of such systems. Chaotic dynamics of the Duffing oscillator subjected to periodic external and nonlinear parameter excitations with delayed feedback are investigated both analytically and numerically in this paper. With the Melnikov method, the critical value of chaos arising from heteroclinic intersection is derived analytically. The feature of the critical curves separating chaotic and nonchaotic regions on the excitation frequency and the time delay is investigated analytically in detail. Under the corresponding system parameters, the monotonicity of the critical value to the excitation frequency, displacement time delay, and velocity time delay is obtained rigorously. The chaos threshold obtained by the analytical method is verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We consider the motion of and Josephson current through a mechanically oscillating superconducting island asymmetrically embedded in a Josephson junction. The electromechanical coupling is provided by distance dependent tunneling rates between the electrodes and the island. The system asymmetry, resulting from the geometrical configuration, leads, for weak coupling, to an equation of the mechanical motion that reduces to the well-known Duffing equation. At zero bias voltage the island motion is determined by the homogenous Duffing equation that opens up two separate regions of solutions depending on the superconducting phases. The island either moves under influence of an anharmonic single well potential, or is governed by a double well potential that allows for off-center oscillations. Under applied bias voltage the island equation of motion turns into a modified Duffing equation, with time dependent coefficients, that demonstrate both quasi periodic and chaotic behavior.

Semiclassical dynamics of a superconducting circuit: chaotic dynamics and fractal attractors

Abstract:We study here the semiclassical dynamics of a superconducting circuit constituted by two Josephson junctions in series, in the presence of a voltage bias. We derive the equations of motion for the circuit through a Hamiltonian description of the problem, considering the voltage sources as semi-holonomic constraints. We find that the dynamics of the system corresponds to that of a planar rotor with an oscillating pivot. We show that the system exhibits a rich dynamical behaviour with chaotic properties and we present a topological classification of the cyclic solutions, providing insight into the fractal nature of the dynamical attractors.

Abstract:The quantum dynamics of the Josephson junction system in the computational subspace is investigated. A scheme for the controlled not operation is given for two capasitively coupled SQUIDs. In this system, there is no systematic error for the two qubit operation. For the inductively coupled SQUIDs, the effective Hamiltonian causes systematic errors in the computational subspace for the two qubit operation. Using the purterbation theory, we construct a more precise effective Hamiltonian. This new effective Hamiltonian reduces the systematic error to the level much lower than the threshold of the fault resilent quantum computation.

Abstract:An rf superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) consists of a superconducting ring interrupted by a Josephson junction (JJ). When driven by an alternating magnetic field, the induced supercurrents around the ring are determined by the JJ through the celebrated Josephson relations. This system exhibits rich nonlinear behavior, including chaotic effects. We study the dynamics of a pair of parametrically-driven coupled SQUIDs arranged in series. We take advantage of the weak damping that characterizes these systems to perform a multiple-scales analysis and obtain amplitude equations, describing the slow dynamics of the system. This picture allows us to expose the existence of homoclinic orbits in the dynamics of the integrable part of the slow equations of motion. Using high-dimensional Melnikov theory, we are able to obtain explicit parameter values for which these orbits persist in the full system, consisting of both Hamiltonian and non-Hamiltonian perturbations, to form so-called Silnikov orbits, indicating a loss of integrability and the existence of chaos.

On the Chaotic Flux Dynamics in a Long Josephson Junction

Abstract:Flux dynamics in an annular long Josephson junction is studied. Three main topics are covered. The first is chaotic flux dynamics and its prediction via Melnikov integrals. It turns out that DC current bias cannot induce chaotic flux dynamics, while AC current bias can. The existence of a common root to the Melnikov integrals is a necessary condition for the existence of chaotic flux dynamics. The second topic is on the components of the global attractor and the bifurcation in the perturbation parameter measuring the strength of loss, bias and irregularity of the junction. The global attractor can contain co-existing local attractors e.g. a local chaotic attractor and a local regular attractor. In the infinite dimensional phase space setting, the bifurcation is very complicated. Chaotic attractors can appear and disappear in a random fashion. Three types of attractors (chaos, breather, spatially uniform and temporally periodic attractor) are identified. The third topic is ratchet effect. Ratchet effect can be achieved by a current bias field which corresponds to an asymmetric potential, in which case the flux dynamics is ever lasting chaotic. When the current bias field corresponds to a symmetric potential, the flux dynamics is often transiently chaotic, in which case the ratchet effect disappears after sufficiently long time.
