Abstract:If we take Heidegger's ontology to be a philosophy of history, then, for Husserl, the problem of history is only one among the three major directions of his thoughts. After Husserl met Dilthey in 1905, he more and more attended to the problem of history and reflected upon the longitudinal intentionality of time-genesis-history. His basic idea is to grasp the condition of possibility of history by means of an eidetic intuition upon the longitudinal intentionality. However, because Husserl never explicates his thoughts on history in his published works, he is often regarded as a non-historical philosopher. In fact, like Dilthey, Husserl purports to combine historical enlightenment with critique of knowledge. It is hence Dilthey-Yorck, Husserl, Heidegger and Gadamer who established together the most important tradition of history of philosophy in the twentieth century, namely, phenomenological-ontological philosophy of history.

Abstract:A History of Chinese Historiography by Jin Yufu is considered an important milestone of the initial formation of the discipline——Chinese historiography history. Since the publication of the book, it is full of controversy. Those who praise regard it as the first relatively complete writing of Chinese Historiography; those who criticize argue that the book is a misunderstanding of Chinese Historiography, and some even question the value of this discipline. According to the academic context of Jin Yufu, it is clear that he distinguishes historical materials from historiography based on the difference between jizhu and zhuanshu. Consequently, he legitimate traditional historiography as the materials of the new general history. This idea inherits the Movement for Rearranging the National Heritage, deciding his method, materials, and purport——rearrangement of the traditional historiography, discrimination of historical records, measurement of the historical material value and genre evolution, and the compilation of new general history on the basis of the above three. With his A History of Chinese Historiography and A History of Song, Liao and Jin, Jin Yufu practices his compilation of new general history with the reform of the traditional historiography. With the study of the context and impact of A History of Chinese Historiography, the pluralism of the academic development in the Republic of China can be revealed and thus breaking the subject boundaries.

Abstract:Historiography places great emphasis on making distinctions.This sets it apart from most Social Sciences,which mainly seek synthesis.Therefore,historical research does not lend itself to grand summations,but rather to thorough understanding.However,making distinctions is not merely paying attention to the particular.Rather,it places even more weight on the whole in order to study the particular in light of the whole and seek out the pervasive links between individual cases.The thorough understanding of modern Chinese history not only needs to link ancient and modern,Chinese and foreign,but also needs to bridge all fields of study.However,in recent years historiography,which originally ought to be an integrated body of knowledge,has been continuously fragmented by the great variety of historical data and the pressures of departmental teaching and research agendas.Specialization is all the fashion,and reading is just a tool for professional development.When inappropriate standards of academic exchange and evaluation are added into the mix,together with a tendency to "trim our feet to fit our shoes" and "cut our suits without measuring our figures," the result is deepening scholarly turmoil.Only by returning to historiography's original principles,by grasping its system of knowledge and the origins and evolutions of its various divisions,by distilling the complex down to the simple,by reading widely and with open minds,by gaining new knowledge through reviewing what we know,by freeing our research of departmental prejudices and restrictions,and by following a well-thought-out plan,will we be able to do research with skill and ease and avoid mistaking the partial for the whole.

Abstract:From early descriptions of cinema as 'living picture' to the 'crystal-images' evoked by Gilles Deleuze, the conceptualization of filmic media has left behind an impressive scaffold of organic metaphors and biological analogies. Although a mechanistic image of cinematic modernity prevailed in academia for many decades, we know now from the work of scholars such as Hannah Landecker, Antonio Somaini and Inga Pollmann that early and classical film theory were steeped in, and frequently interacted with, scientific and cultural discourses of life, natural environments, biological formation, and evolution.<a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-fn js-xref-fn" href=""><sup>1</sup></a> In recent years, new critical approaches informed by philosophical vitalism and post-humanist materialisms have tended to dissolve the specificity of cinema, as a theoretical and historical object, within a greater ecology of animated media, while breaking down epistemological distinctions between subject and object, the vital and the technical, the human and the nonhuman, in a plasmatic sea of animacy. Opting both for more disciplinary specificity and a variety of methodological perspectives, this dossier will rearticulate moving images' involvement with nature in terms of aesthetic mediation – by which we hope to designate a historically determined range of formal structures and sensible environments, neither fixed nor arbitrary, that condition how moving-image work can be created and experienced.

Abstract:As a kind of visual communication art, a movie is a product of the fusion of modern science and technology and art, as well as a medium for reflecting social phenomena and spreading multiculturalism. The mainstream Hollywood films naturally represent the ideological characteristics and value orientation of the field or country it belongs to. As a heterogeneous culture, Chinese elements in Hollywood movies have experienced a long and tortuous change, which is not only related to the enhancement of China's comprehensive national power and the change of international relations, but also inextricably linked to the Western core cultural values behind Hollywood. The overall change of the image of Chinese elements in Hollywood movies can be summarized as a shift from negative stereotypes to the inclusion of Chinese characteristic elements and the gradual export of Chinese stories and culture, showing a positive and diversified development trend, and behind this trend change is the refraction and effect of cross-cultural communication between Chinese and Western.

Abstract:From the perspective of the features and methodologies of discipline studies, the study of art history should not only lay emphasis on the rational investigation and archeological analysis of the works and materials, but also rely on the instinctive recreation and the understanding of human emotions of the historian. This is determined by the immaterialness of the objects of study. While attention is paid to the science and technology of the approaches to art history studies, emphasis should also be laid upon the status and function of cultural ideology in history studies. The objects of study and the process of development in the study of art history is also the history of thoughts. The history of artistic styles is a way of narration, but not the only and complete way. In the postmodern context, the ideology and methodology of art history studies must move onto a multiple, open, and poly-dimensional stage. The main tendency and feature is to move from the study of art history itself to the interdisciplinary, transnational and cross-cultural studies which put art history in the history of its society and culture rather than the linear, one-dimensional and closed ideas and narratives of art history.

Abstract:In the history of Taiwan’s cinematic development,Taiwan New Cinema Movement initiated at the beginning of 1980s played a very important part,echoed with the new cinema movement in Hong Kong first and later in the Mainland around the same period.The three movements combined together formed the New Wave in the history of Chinese film production.During this period,a plethora of high quality films occurred successively featuring innovative awareness,distinctive personal styles and high artistic and aesthetic quality. These films refreshed the visions of the world film arena,and opened a window for foreign viewers to understand and appreciate the aesthetic styles of Chinese films.Although great changes have take place in the ecological environment and film creation,production,and markets in Taiwan,Mainland and Hong Kong film industries, the spirit of artistic innovation embodied by the New Cinema Movement,together with the film artists’care a-bout social reality,about modern and contemporary history and their critical spirit,is still worth vigorous pro-motion and upholding.Therefore,it is very important and necessary to revisit and reflect on the artistic innova-tion movement,explore its significance and values,summarize experience and lessons and gain new insights in order to promote healthy and orderly development of Chinese film and Chinese language film in the context of the new era on the one hand,and to rewrite the history of Chinese cinematic development on the other.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.

Abstract:The cinema as a cultural institution has been studied by academic researchers in the arts and humanities. At present, cultural media studies are the home to the aesthetics and critical analysis of film, film history and other branches of film scholarship. Probably less known to most is that research psychologists working in social and life science labs have also contributed to the study of the medium. They have examined the particular experience that motion pictures provide to the film audience and the mechanisms that explain the perception and comprehension of film, and how movies move viewers and to what effects. This article reviews achievements in psychological research of the film since its earliest beginnings in the 1910s. A leading issue in the research has been whether understanding films is a bottom-up process, or a top-down one. A bottom-up explanation likens film-viewing to highly automated detection of stimulus features physically given in the supply of images; a top-down one to the construction of scenes from very incomplete information using mental schemata. Early film psychologists tried to pinpoint critical features of simple visual stimuli responsible for the perception of smooth movement. The riddle of apparent motion has not yet been solved up to now. Gestalt psychologists were the first to point at the role of mental structures in seeing smooth movement, using simple visual forms and displays. Bottom-up and top-down approaches to the comprehension of film fought for priority from the 60s onwards and became integrated at the end of the century. Gibson’s concept of direct perception led to the identification of low-level film-stylistic cues that are used in mainstream film production, and support film viewers in highly automated seamless perception of film scenes. Hochberg’s argument for the indispensability of mental schemata, too, accounted for the smooth cognitive construction of portrayed action and scenes. Since the 90s, cognitive analyses of narration in film by film scholars from the humanities have revolutionised accounts of the comprehension of movies. They informed computational content analyses that link low-level film features with meaningful units of film-story-telling. After a century of research, some perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that support our interaction with events in the real world have been uncovered. Today, the film experience at large has reappeared on the agenda. An integration of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms is sought in explaining the remarkable intensity of the film experience. Advances are now being made in grasping what it is like to enjoy movies, by describing the absorbing and moving qualities of the experience. As an example, a current account of film viewers' emotional experience is presented. Further advances in our understanding of the film experience and its underlying mechanisms can be expected if film psychologists team up with cognitive film studies, computer vision and the neurosciences. This collaboration is also expected to allow for research into mainstream and other genres as forms of art.

Abstract:Abstract The methodology of combining traditional Chinese culture and film studies is of significant interest to Chinese film theory. Besides revealing traditional cultural characteristics of Chinese films, film studies should also explore the nature of cinema. Hence, the task of inheriting traditional Chinese culture extends far beyond the conversion of concepts from classical literature to modern literature, to that of illuminating the philosophy behind those concepts. Such an exploration may be illustrated by revisiting the traditional phrase, “essay as the vehicle of Dao”. Through an analysis of different layers of Dao, and with the phrase reshaped as “cinema as the vehicle of Dao”, the scope of enquiry stretches from theme to ontology and epistemology, where a conversation between Chinese film theory and Western film theory may be found.
