Abstract:With growing scale of software, software architecture is becoming more complex and is hard to manage and control. Service Component Architecture (SCA) offers the supports for improving the complexity. However, few approaches address the complexity metric for SCA. In this paper, we propose a complexity metric based on SCA specification. The metric is composed of three parts that are employed respectively to measure the complexity of component, dependence, and composite of SCA. With the help of the metric, a bottom-top measuring process from component to system can fulfill the evaluation for SCA complexity. The proposed metric is characterized with the simplicity and practicality. Finally, an experiment is given to show the simplicity and practicality of the metric.

Abstract:With the aggrandizement scale of software systems,how to measure the complexity of large-scale object-oriented software systems has been a challenge for software engineers.The theory of complex networks recently studied has offered a new perspective on solving this problem.We studied the phenomenon of complex networks in large-scale software system,and proposed metrics from three different levels,i.e.,unit-level,module-level and network-level.We built JPAC,a tool for characterizing and measuring the complexity of Java systems.JPAC can be used to analyze the structure of large-scale Java systems,and compute software metrics based on complex networks.

Abstract:Software implements a significant proportion of functionality in factory automation. Thus, efficient development and the reuse of software parts, so-called units, enhance competitiveness. Thereby, complex control software units are more difficult to understand, leading to increased development, testing and maintenance costs. However, measuring complexity is challenging due to many different, subjective views on the topic. This paper compares different complexity definitions from literature and considers with a qualitative questionnaire study the complexity perception of domain experts, who confirm the importance of objective measures to compare complexity. The paper proposes a set of metrics that measure various classes of software complexity to identify the most complex software units as a prerequisite for refactoring. The metrics include complexity caused by size, data structure, control flow, information flow and lexical structure. Unlike most literature approaches, the metrics are compliant with graphical and textual languages from the IEC 61131-3 standard. Further, a concept for interpreting the metric results is presented. A comprehensive evaluation with industrial software from two German plant manufacturers validates the metrics' suitability to measure complexity.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new method for measuring the complexity of software systems based on complex network theory. We first construct the complex network model for software system. Then, the complexity of a homogeneous system is defined according to the entropy theory. Abstract:The necessity of developing enterprise-modeling system based on Internet/Intranet is emphasized in this paper. Abstract:Software metric plays a vital role in quantitative assessment of any specific software development methodology and its impact on the maintenance of software. It can also be used to indicate the degree of interdependence among the components by providing valuable feedback about quality attributes such as maintainability, modifiability and understandability. The effort for software maintenance normally has a high correlation with the complexity of its design. Aspect Oriented Software Design is an emerging methodology that provides powerful new techniques to improve the modularity of software from its design. In this paper, evaluation model to capture the symptoms of complexity has been defined consisting of metrics, artifacts and elements of complexity. A tool to automatically capture these metrics across different versions of a case study application, University Automation System has been developed. The values obtained for the proposed metrics are used to infer on the complexity of Java and AspectJ implementations of the case study application. These measurements indicate that AspectJ implementations are less complex compared to the Java implementations and there by positively influencing the maintainability of software.

Abstract:Computing devices and associated software govern everyday life, and form the backbone of safety critical systems in banking, healthcare, automotive and other fields. Increasing system complexity, quickly evolving technologies and paradigm shifts have kept software quality research at the forefront. Standards such as ISO's 25010 express it in terms of sub-characteristics such as maintainability, reliability and security. A significant body of literature attempts to link these subcharacteristics with software metric values, with the end goal of creating a metric-based model of software product quality. However, research also identifies the most important existing barriers. Among them we mention the diversity of software application types, development platforms and languages. Additionally, unified definitions to make software metrics truly language-agnostic do not exist, and would be difficult to implement given programming language levels of variety. This is compounded by the fact that many existing studies do not detail their methodology and tooling, which precludes researchers from creating surveys to enable data analysis on a larger scale. In our paper, we propose a comprehensive study of metric values in the context of three complex, open-source applications. We align our methodology and tooling with that of existing research, and present it in detail in order to facilitate comparative evaluation. We study metric values during the entire 18-year development history of our target applications, in order to capture the longitudinal view that we found lacking in existing literature. We identify metric dependencies and check their consistency across applications and their versions. At each step, we carry out comparative evaluation with existing research and present our results.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of the highly engineered products, Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is proposed to support the complexity management of the product development. As the basic of complexity management, complexity analysis is used to measure the system complexity for system solution trade-offs. Using traditional MBSE approaches, system architectures of product are formalized as MBSE models whose complexity measurement provides cues to quantitative trade-offs. In this paper, an MBSE approach is proposed to support complex analysis using qualitative and quantitative approaches. A GOPPRR approach is first proposed to support MBSE formalisms. Then a complexity measurement formula is used to calculate the structure complexity of the MBSE models. Finally, through a tool-chain developed based on Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC), a visualization tool is used to analyze the system complexity by measuring and visualizing the model complexity. A case study is proposed to evaluate the potentials of this approach for supporting product trade-offs. From the results, the approach enables to calculate complexity of MBSE models and virtualizes the model topologies.

Abstract:Simulation is a powerful technique in evaluating and improving the performance of complex systems. In order to improve the efficiency of simulation experiment design, analysis and evaluation, auxiliary tools are required. Unfortunately, existing tools are usually not meeting the requirements of simulation. Moreover, the restricted interfaces, reusability and expandability influence their efficiency to a certain extent. In this paper, an integrated software environment, HIT-SEDAES, is designed for solving these problems. A process model of simulation experiment design, analysis and evaluation is introduced to guide the development of the software environment. And several solutions are proposed to solve key problems in this development. Finally, an application is used to illustrate how the software environment works for the problems of model validation, effectiveness evaluation and performance analysis.

Abstract:Software protection technology has been universally emphasized,with the development of reverse engineering and static analysis techniques.So,it is important to research how to quantitatively evaluate the security of the protected software.However,there are some researchers evaluating the security of the proposed protect techniques directly by the traditional complexity metrics,which is not sufficient.In order to better reflect security from software complexity,a multi-factor complexity metric based on control flow graph（CFG） is proposed,and the corresponding calculating procedures are presented in detail.Moreover,complexity density models are constructed to indicate the strength of software resisting reverse engineering and code analysis.Instance analysis shows that the proposed method is simple and practical,and can more objectively reflect software security from the perspective of the complexity.

Abstract:CBSE: Component-Based Software Engineering is based on the idea to develop software systems by selecting appropriate components and then to assemble them with a well-defined software architecture (software component assembly). By the reuse of existing software components that have already been tested, software engineers may reduce errors and shorten the time to market of the system under development. However, software engineers still have a problem in selecting the existing reusable components as well as difficulties in determining the quality of the developed components for future reuse. So the choice of component is one of the key factors for successful development of such application. In this paper we present SCAE: Software Component Assembly Evaluation, a method enabling quality evaluation of software components. This method allows us to choose the best composition in term of quality (non-functional needs).

Abstract:Early prediction of software quality is important for better software planning and controlling. In early development phases, design complexity metrics are considered as useful indicators of software testing effort and some quality attributes. Although many studies investigate the relationship between design complexity and cost and quality, it is unclear what we have learned beyond the scope of individual studies. This paper presented a systematic review on the influence of software complexity metrics on quality attributes. We aggregated Spearman correlation coefficients from 59 different data sets from 57 primary studies by a tailored meta-analysis approach. We found that fault proneness and maintainability are most frequently investigated attributes. Chidamber and Kemerer metric suite is most frequently used but not all of them are good quality attribute indicators. Moreover, the impact of these metrics is not different in proprietary and open source projects. The result provides some implications for building quality model across project type

Abstract:Software engineering activities in the Industry has come a long way with various improve- ments brought in various stages of the software development life cycle. The complexity of modern software, the commercial constraints and the expectation for high quality products demand the accurate fault prediction based on OO design metrics in the class level in the early stages of software development. The object oriented class metrics are used as quality predictors in the entire OO software development life cycle even when a highly iterative, incremental model or agile software process is employed. Recent research has shown some of the OO design metrics are useful for predicting fault-proneness of classes. In this paper the empirical validation of a set of metrics proposed by Chidamber and Kemerer is performed to assess their ability in predicting the software quality in terms of fault proneness and degradation. We have also proposed the design complexity of object-oriented software with Weighted Methods per Class metric (WMC-CK metric) expressed in terms of Shannon entropy, and error proneness.

Abstract:In this paper, a Testing and Evaluation Aided System for Distributed Interactive Simulation (DTEAS) is introduced. Some aspects, including constitutes, architecture, main function modules and some key technologies, are discussed in detail. As a powerful computer aided tool Distributed Testing and Evaluation Aided System(DTEAS) consists of data collection and reversing module, system testing and evaluation module, exercise monitor and analysis module and report generating and publishing module, and supports the whole process data recording, entity inspecting, simulation reversing, data visualization, data statistics and evaluation report automatic generation in the whole simulation exercise. DTEAS has successfully been applied in the full system integration testing of the Synthetic Simulation Environment Project, evidently increasing evaluation's efficiency, objectivity and veracity, shortening the cycle of system integrating and debugging. The research work is valuable to the future study of CIMS for Complex Product.
