Abstract:With the rapid development of the network technologies, software development is becoming more and more complicated. Traditional software engineering management methods based on Client/Server structure have not been very competent for large-scale software development. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on P2P structure. By exploring the characteristics of P2P, our system takes “Peer Group” as the unit to build up services including source code management, task assignment and software visualization. Our framework overcomes the server's “bottleneck” existed in the C/S structure. Although it still has a server in the network, the server only provides indexing function and does not store the document. In this way, the loads of the server are transferred to the network boundary. Our method takes full advantages of computation resources, and can increase the system's performance. We will also show in the paper the performance increases by our method in software development for practical applications.

Abstract:With the aggrandizement scale of software systems,how to measure the complexity of large-scale object-oriented software systems has been a challenge for software engineers.The theory of complex networks recently studied has offered a new perspective on solving this problem.We studied the phenomenon of complex networks in large-scale software system,and proposed metrics from three different levels,i.e.,unit-level,module-level and network-level.We built JPAC,a tool for characterizing and measuring the complexity of Java systems.JPAC can be used to analyze the structure of large-scale Java systems,and compute software metrics based on complex networks.

Abstract:Software development is becoming a more and more complicated task, and traditional client/server based software engineering management methods may not be suitable for large-scale software development. With the rapid development of the network technologies solutions have been emerged. This paper proposes a software engineering management method based on the Peer-to-Peer infrastructure. Abstract:Metrics model is in fact a cluster of criterions to assess software, which may show the characteristics ofdifferent software systems or modules and then serve different demands from users. The research on software metricstries to give characteristic evaluations to software components in component extraction, and then supports users to se-lect reusable components in high quality.Java has been one of the main languages today. With consideration of characteristics of Java and research on somegeneral metrics model, our model: Quality Metrics Model for Java is born.Following the principle of "Factor-Criterion-Metrics", more detailed descriptions of factors, criterions and met-rics of our model are given. In fact, the metrics model shows us some way for consideration. Through this model, wehope to normalize the point of the views of users.In JavaSQMM, four activities organize software quality evaluating: understanding, function implementing,maintaining and reusing, and then four corresponding factors of quality come to birth, which are mixed by criteria andmetrics.When designing our Java metrics model, the original development of Object Oriented Metrics Model Tool for Ja-va(OOMTJava)provides the support to process of metrics semi-automatically.

Abstract:The need to improve software productivity and software quality has put forward the research on software metrics technology and the development of software metrics tool to support related activities. To support object-oriented software metrics practice effectively, a model-based approach to object-oriented software metrics is proposed in this paper. This approach guides the metrics users to adopt the quality metrics model to measure the object-oriented software products. The development of the model can be achieved by using a top-down approach. This approach explicitly proposes the conception of absolute normalization computation and relative normalization computation for a metrics model. Moreover, a generic software metrics tool—Jade Bird Object-Oriented Metrics Tool (JBOOMT) is designed to implement this approach. The parser-based approach adopted by the tool makes the information of the source program accurate and complete for measurement. It supports various customizable hierarchical metrics models and provides a flexible user interface for users to manipulate the models. It also supports absolute and relative normalization mechanisms in different situations.
An Empirical Study of Long Method and God Method in Industrial Projects.

Abstract:Code smell is any symptom in the source code of a program that possibly indicates a deeper problem. Though code smells are usually not proper bugs which are defined as technically incorrect and functionality block, they indicate poor programming practices in code level which increases risk of bugs in the future. Long method smell is identified as a kind of methods which are have large number of executable statements, at the same time God method smell is identified as a kind of methods which is doing too much. On the previous research and practice, people treat these 2 concepts equivalently. However, the definition of \"large number of executable statements\" shows us the size of the method, and at the same time definition of \"doing too much\" shows us the complexity of the logic which is implemented and nested in this method. Though intuitively the two definitions are equivalent -- methods with large number of statement means it nests much business logic so that the complexity of these methods is high, a dearth of studies suggest the research of difference between these two definitions. In this paper, present 2 research questions to study these 2 definitions. We choose one release of 11 java based web application projects which is in maintenance period respectively. In these releases, we ask the developers to analysis the bug reports and related code, then collect all 125 bugs which is caused by code smell and the related code for fixing these bugs. We get 45 bugs caused by the Long method smell and the related 31 methods, and we analyzed the data compared with the longest methods in these projects. The study highlights the need for a clearer definition of this kind of code smell, and there are many factors not only length which is affecting the code quality. So the real thing which is affecting the code quality is beyond the definition of \"large number of executable statement\", and at the same time the definition of \"doing too much\" should be modeling to illuminate this kind of code smell.

Abstract:Software code quality is a construct with three dimensions: maintainability, reliability, and functionality. Although many firms have incorporated code quality metrics in their operations, evaluating these metrics still lacks consistent standards. We categorized distinct metrics into two types: 1) monotonic metrics that consistently influence code quality; and 2) non-monotonic metrics that lack a consistent relationship with code quality. To consistently evaluate them, we proposed a distribution-based method to get metric scores. Our empirical analysis includes 36,460 high-quality open-source software (OSS) repositories and their raw metrics from SonarQube and CK. The evaluated scores demonstrate great explainability on software adoption. Our work contributes to the multi-dimensional construct of code quality and its metric measurements, which provides practical implications for consistent measurements on both monotonic and non-monotonic metrics.

Abstract:Software metric plays a vital role in quantitative assessment of any specific software development methodology and its impact on the maintenance of software. It can also be used to indicate the degree of interdependence among the components by providing valuable feedback about quality attributes such as maintainability, modifiability and understandability. The effort for software maintenance normally has a high correlation with the complexity of its design. Aspect Oriented Software Design is an emerging methodology that provides powerful new techniques to improve the modularity of software from its design. In this paper, evaluation model to capture the symptoms of complexity has been defined consisting of metrics, artifacts and elements of complexity. A tool to automatically capture these metrics across different versions of a case study application, University Automation System has been developed. The values obtained for the proposed metrics are used to infer on the complexity of Java and AspectJ implementations of the case study application. These measurements indicate that AspectJ implementations are less complex compared to the Java implementations and there by positively influencing the maintainability of software.

Abstract:Software engineering activities in the Industry has come a long way with various improve- ments brought in various stages of the software development life cycle. The complexity of modern software, the commercial constraints and the expectation for high quality products demand the accurate fault prediction based on OO design metrics in the class level in the early stages of software development. The object oriented class metrics are used as quality predictors in the entire OO software development life cycle even when a highly iterative, incremental model or agile software process is employed. Recent research has shown some of the OO design metrics are useful for predicting fault-proneness of classes. In this paper the empirical validation of a set of metrics proposed by Chidamber and Kemerer is performed to assess their ability in predicting the software quality in terms of fault proneness and degradation. We have also proposed the design complexity of object-oriented software with Weighted Methods per Class metric (WMC-CK metric) expressed in terms of Shannon entropy, and error proneness.

Abstract:A set of software metrics for the evaluation of power management systems (PMSs) is presented. Such systems for managing power need to be autonomous, scalable, low in complexity, and comprised of portable algorithms in order to be well applied across the varying implementations that utilize power systems. Although similar metrics exist for software in general, their definitions do not readily lend themselves to the unique characteristics of power management systems or systems of similar architecture.

Predicting the Maintainability of Open Source Software Using Design Metrics

Abstract:This paper empirically investigates the relationships between 15 design metrics and maintainability of 148 Java open source software. The results show that size and complexity metrics are strongly related to the maintainability of open source software. However, cohesion and coupling, as currently captured by existing metrics, do not seem to have a significant impact on maintainability. When used together, these metrics can predict system maintainability fairly accurately (mean MREs below 30%).

Abstract:In this paper, we describe our experience implementing some of classic software engineering metrics using Boa - a large-scale software repository mining platform - and its dedicated language. We also aim to take an advantage of the Boa infrastructure to propose new software metrics and to characterize open source projects by software metrics to provide reference values of software metrics based on large number of open source projects. Presented software metrics, well known and proposed in this paper, can be used to build large-scale software defect prediction models. Additionally, we present the obstacles we met while developing metrics, and our analysis can be used to improve Boa in its future releases. The implemented metrics can also be used as a foundation for more complex explorations of open source projects and serve as a guide how to implement software metrics using Boa as the source code of the metrics is freely available to support reproducible research.

A Metrics-Based Comparative Study on Object-Oriented Programming Languages.

Abstract:There has been a long debate on which programming language can help write better object-oriented programs.However, to date little response is given to this issue with empirical evidence.In this paper, we perform a comparative study on C++, C#, and Java programs by using object-oriented metrics, which comprise measures for class size, complexity, coupling, cohesion, inheritance, encapsulation, polymorphism, and reusability.Our experiment is conducted on 78 tasks in Rosetta Code, a code repository providing solutions to the same programming tasks in different languages.The experimental results show that: (1) C++ classes are significantly larger than C# and Java classes in size, but their complexity does not differ significantly; (2) C# classes are significantly more likely to be coupled than C++ and Java classes through inter-class method invocations instead of direct data access; (3) C# and Java classes tend to be more cohesive than C++ classes; (4) C# and Java significantly outperform C++ in building deep inheritance trees; and (5) programs written in C++, C#, and Java do not show a significant difference in class encapsulation, polymorphism, and reusability.These findings could help practitioners choose suitable languages to develop object-oriented systems.

Abstract:Focusing on software productivity and software quality control has spurred the research on software metrics technology. The increasing importance being placed on object-oriented software development has led to the research on the object-oriented software metrics and the development of automated tools to support object-oriented metrics. To effectively aid the software evaluation, a software metrics tool is supposed to support the metrics model. The objective of Jade Bird object-oriented metrics tool (JBOOMT) is to provide an automated software metrics support for users and managers to measure the design or source code of the object-oriented program acid thus evaluate the quality of the software according to the specified hierarchical metrics model. A mechanism is provided for metrics users to customize the preferred metrics model and browse the details of the metrics model. This article introduces the design of JBOOMT and discusses its implementation built in the Jade Bird program analysis system (JBPAS).

Abstract:It is no longer a debate that quality is an essential requirement in any software product, especially in a highly competitive market and a context of mission critical product. To obtain better product quality, software metrics are the only reliable indicators provided to assess and measure this attribute of a software product. Several metrics have been elaborated but none of them were really convenient in an object oriented ecosystem. However, the MOOD metrics have proven their efficiency in gauging the software quality at system level, while CK Metrics measure the quality of software at class level . These metrics, well suited for Object-Oriented design, allow measuring object oriented design properties such as coupling, cohesion, encapsulation, Inheritance and polymorphism. The goal of the present study is using the mentioned metrics to assess the quality of two different case studies, MARF and GIPSY. For this purpose, different tools such as McCabe, Logiscope and, JDeodorant have been used to measure the quality of these projects by implementing in different manners the metrics composing the CK and MOOD suite metrics, whilst MARFCAT has been used to detect vulnerable code files in both case studies. The present study puts the light on the strengths of these tools to measure the quality of proven and largely researched software products.

Abstract:Measurement is an important criterion to improve the performance of a product. This paper presents a comparative study involving measurements between two frameworks MARF and GIPSY. Initially it establishes a thorough understanding of these frameworks and their applications. MARF comprises of a number of algorithms for voice and speech processing etc. GIPSY on the contrary provides a multi lingual platform for developing compiler components. These frameworks are meant to provide an open source environment for the programmers or users and implement them in applications. Several metrics are used for object-oriented design quality assessment. We use these metrics to evaluate the code quality of both MARF and GIPSY. We describe how tools can be used to analyze these metric values and categorize the quality of the code as excellent or worse. Based on these values we interpret the results in terms of quality attributes achieved. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of metric values is made in this regard to elaborate the impact of design parameters on the quality of the code.
