Abstract:Nanobiotechnology is converged by nanotechnology and biotechnology, and is a major component of nanotechnology. It is also an important research topic in the area of biomedicine. The nanoparticle is the most interested and useful nanomaterial used in the biomedical field, which have many characteristics. This article introduced some new reserach achievements and progress in the biosensor and biodetection field based on the nanoparticle technology, presented the synthesis methods for nanoparticle, the application of nanoparticle in the nanobiosensor and nanobiochip, and some related research work carried out in our lab. Finally, the development of this field in the future was prospected.

Abstract:This article places stress on the research of the lifecycle of Nanotechnology, analyzing the rules and characters of each of its developing period. Then we confirm that the Nanotechnology and its industrialization of China is in the germination phase. We also consider the obstacles in the industrialization of Nanotechnology in China come from the lack of developmental mechanism and confirm the key points of the supporting policy is to construct an effective supporting environment, and establish an effective developmental mechanism for it.

Abstract:Nanotechnologies and nanoparticles represent a promising and fast-growing field. This is principally because a nanodimensional substance can have physical and chemical properties that are different from those of the same substance with larger dimensions. However, the present knowledge is not yet sufficient for the elaboration of nanospecific regulations. Many projects with the aim of completing the necessary scientific and technical basis for the assessment of nanotechnology related risks are under way. Under these circumstances closely relationship between the industries and government bodies is necessary to build up safety standards or regulations by all stakeholders constitute an appropriate tool for the protection of human health and the environment.

Abstract:Abstract New advances in nanotechnology are driving a wave of technology revolution impacting a broad range of areas in agricultural production. The current work reviews nanopesticides, nano-fabricated fertilizers, and nano activity-based growth promoters reported in the last several years, focusing on mechanisms revealed for preparation and functioning. It appears to us that with many fundamental concepts have been demonstrated over last two decades, new advances in this area continue to expand mainly in three directions, i.e., efficiency improvement, material sustainability and environment-specific stimulation functionalities. It is also evident that environmental and health concerns associated with nano agrochemicals are the primary motivation and focus for most recent work. Challenges and perspectives for future development of nano agrochemicals are also discussed.

Abstract:Nanomaterials (NMs) with unique properties such as high specific surface area, strong adsorption, are widely used in in the field of environmental remediation. NMs types in the environmental remediation are reviewed in this paper. Some researches focus on the kinds of commonly used preparation methods and its modified materials at home and abroad in recent years, which was widely used in atmospheric sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, organic pollutants and heavy metals, water application status in the field of soil pollution. NMs application researches show that they were mostly used in the field of water pollution treatment and the sulfur and nitrogen oxides in air pollution treatment, while it was less in the carbon monoxide, methane removal efficiency of pollutants of soil pollution repair application. Although nanotechnology shows passive effects on the environment pollution repair, the human environmental health and public safety risks were still needed to be detected. Some toxicological analysis of NMs showed that the toxicological mechanisms of many NMs were not yet clear. The environmental effect and biological toxicological analysis of NMs should be detected in the current application of NMs in order to reduce or eliminate the negative effects of NMs. The future development of NMs should be given priority to develop new types of modified materials, to avoid secondary pollution while using a variety of technical means, to explore the recycling renewable methods of NMs and to reduce the cost by recycling them.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are atomic or molecular groups composed of a very small number of atoms or molecules. The particles have a shell structure. Nanomaterials are made up of a long-range ordered arrangement of atoms in grains and a disordered interface composition. The nanomaterial has a large number of interfaces. These unique volume effects, surface effects, and macroscopic quantum tunnelling effects enable nanomaterials to have unusual mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, optical, catalysis, and superconducting properties. Such characteristics make nanomaterials have significant application value in the fields of national defense, electronics, chemical industry, metallurgy, light industry, aviation, ceramics, catalysts, medicine, etc. The development of nanomaterial technology will have a profound impact on the productivity and may solve a series of problems such as food, health, energy and environmental protection fundamentally. This article analyzes the application prospect of nanomaterial and different preparation method. At the same time, the advantages and disadvantages of preparation are shown in the article which provides a literature review for researchers to refer.

Abstract:This paper is to introduce its author's contention that use of multidisciplinary forensics to encompass scientific investigative methods and hazard assessment will provide the answer to what level health and environmental risk management regulation is needed. Actually, a lot of projects has so far been under way in hoping to found a necessary scientific and technical basis for assessing the risks likely to be caused by nanotechnology and the adoption of nanomaterials and nanoproducts. In this connection, we suggest that it is necessary to build up safety standards or regulations. It is also imperative for the manufacturing industries (including all the stakeholders) and governmental departments to establish proper cooperative relation and assign their respective responsibilities in controlling the environmental pollution and protection of human health from the adverse effects due to the application and spreading of nano products on the market and people' s lives. The reason of such worries comes just from the nanotechnologies themselves, which are characterized by a high degree of innovation dynamics along with the application of engineered nanomaterials already used in hundreds of consumer nanoproducts. It is also of particular significance that for the time being, the general public is still unaware of the likely danger or risks, or health, safety and environmental concerns, likely to be caused as a result of wide application of nanomaterials. In fact, nanoparticles, as tiny particles, can actually move around the human body and our environment more easily than larger pollutant particles. In addition, due to their extremely small size and large surface areas, nanoparticles may be more reactive and more toxic than larger particles of the same substance. It is for the reasons stated above and some more others, efforts have recently been displayed by manufacturers, researchers, regulatory bodies, professional organizations, NGOs, and other interested parties. Thus, more and more new challenges are to be faced with the understanding, predicting, and overcoming of the potential health risks so as to popularize necessary control technologies and measures to prevent workers and consumers from the exposure to nanoparticles.

Abstract:With the environmental safety becoming the research focus, water environmental security, as an updating research direction has also been the concern. Nano-titania photocatalysis can prevent environmental pollution from the sources and ensure the fundamental productions in the industry. The applications of nano particle photocatalytic technology in environmental safety are reviewed. Emphasis is put on the applications of nano-titania photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment, and the latest achievements in scientific research of nano particle photocatalytic technology in wastewater treatment are given. Besides, it is also pointed out that the technology of using nano-titania as photocatalyst has some obvious disadvantages in the actual treatment process of environmental safety. Lastly, the development trend of photocatalytic technology is discussed.

Abstract:Nanopesticide is an important application of nanotechnology in the agriculture for the past 20 years, which has received significant attention in controlled release and targeted transport as well as reduced dosage, with sizes typically less than 100 nm and large relative surface area. Despite the great role played by nanopesticides in pest and disease control, their toxicological effects cannot be ignored. But the state of knowledge on the biotoxicological effects of nanopesticides is limited, particularly regarding to their environmental fate and behavior. Based on this situation, we discuss the characteristics and applications of five examples of nanopesticide formulations whose nanomaterials react with active ingredients; we analyze the behavior and ecotoxicity of nanopesticides in the environment, mainly in soil and the three aspects of toxic effects; and we discuss the issues that need attention in risk assessment and management. Although there are some challenges and concerns about nanopesticides, in the long run, nanopesticides are worthy of further study and have good prospects for development.

Abstract:In recent years, researchers used many scientific studies to improve modern technologies in the field of reducing the phenomenon of pollution resulting from them. In this chapter, methods to prepare nanomaterials are described, and the main properties such as mechanical, electrical, and optical properties and their relations are determined. The investigation of nanomaterials needed high technologies that depend on a range of nanomaterials from 1 to 100 nm; these are scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffractions (XRD). The applications of nanomaterials in environmental improvement are different from one another depending on the type of devices used, for example, solar cells for producing clean energy, nanotechnologies in coatings for building exterior surfaces, and sonochemical decolorization of dyes by the effect of nanocomposite.

Abstract:Nanoparticles (NPs) in the Earth surface systems have been a global concern due to their abnormal effects and their scientific significance and application value in environmental remediation and resource exploration. By means of comparative and comprehensive studies: (1) A description of the development of techniques for detecting NP characteristics and comparisons between those techniques is summarized; (2) the characters of typical NPs, including minerals at the nanoscale, nano organic matter, natural metal NPs, nanoinclusions, and NPs in soil and water are summarized; (3) the physical, chemical, microbial, and multigeological origins of NPs are revealed; and (4) the abnormal properties of NPs including the size, migration, aggregation, and adsorption effects and oxidation-reduction reactivity, are elaborated upon.The formation, migration, deposition, and accumulation of NPs in the Earth surface are closely related to the environment evolution and resource enrichment, and therefore NPs have environment and resource effects. On this basis, the uses of NPs in environmental remediation and resource exploration are clarified: (1) uses of NPs and modified NPs and combinations of NPs and other remediation technologies are introduced, and the main factors influencing the remediation effect, such as the soil characteristics, hazardous element species, and NP themselves, are examined; (2) NPs originating from plutonic fluid and weathering can indicate the mineralizing mechanism and instruct the identification of concealed deposits. For gas and oil exploration, organic NPs can reflect hydrocarbon-generating processes and determine gas and oil occurrence states. Organic NPs are also widely involved in the mineralization process of metal elements and thus can indicate the coexistence characters of organic matter and metal.

Abstract:The rapid development of nanotechnology is accompanied by critical environmental risks that need to be addressed and effectively managed. A comprehensive understanding of environmental safety of nanoparticles will promote the sustainability of nanotechnology. Nano Ag particle ( AgNP ) is one of the most widely used manufactured metal?based nanoparticles in the world. In our proposal, AgNP was chosen as the typical manufactured metal?based nanoparticles, the migration and transformation of AgNP in typical Chinese soils will be investigated to explore the physicochemical interactions of AgNP with soil components, such as clay minerals and soil organic matter, and to study the bioavailability and toxicity of AgNP in soil matrices on soil micro?organisms, invertebrates and plants. The toxic effects of chronic/acute AgNP exposure on model soil inhabitants will be evaluated to establish dose?effect correlations, and to probe toxicity mechanism of AgNP . A mathematical model is further simulated to quantitatively assess AgNP migration and co?migration, retention flux in soil, and their consequential environmental risk. The results will provide the fundamental basis and technological support for the development of green nanotechnology.

Abstract:Since the launch of the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) in 2000, research and development in nanotechnology innovation has come a long way worldwide. Based on the Web of Science database, the total SCIindexed papers surged from 971 in 2000 to 13, 546 in 2014, and the momentum remains strong. One of the most active and productive research fields has been environmental applications and implications of nanomaterials and nanotechnologies. Environmental nanotechnologies have shown great potential to fundamentally change the conventional practices in environmental cleanup. While the development of innovative cleanup technologies continues to evolve, our understanding of the environmental implications/impacts associated with the booming applications of nanotechnologies in various fields has also deepened. The objectives of this special issue were to: 1) promote exchanges of ideas and information on the latest development of environmental nanotechnologies, 2) facilitate development of more cost-effective and “greener” cleanup technologies based on innovative nanomaterials and nanotechnologies, 3) address limitation and potential environmental impacts of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, and 4) identify major knowledge gaps and research directions. Due to the capacity limit, we can only include 20 papers in this issue from a large pool of high-quality submissions, including 14 research papers addressing applications, four papers on environmental impacts/implications, and two critical review papers. The applications are focused on adsorption, and redox or catalytic degradation of contaminants in water and potentially in soil. The nanomaterials encompass carbonaceous nanomaterials including carbon nanotubes, hydroxyapatite, metal oxides, zero-valent metals including iron, metal catalysts, iron-carbon composite microspheres, and TiO2 nanotubes. The implication papers address interactions of carbonaceous materials with wastewater biomass, effects of zinc oxide on soil microorganisms, effects of nano-silicon on lead in rice cultivars, and toxicity of engineered TiO2 nanoparticles, whereas the critical reviews thoroughly examine applications of nano-sized magnetite and hollow nanomaterials. While most of these works deal with water treatment, it appears that more research is needed to develop novel in situ nanotechnologies for remediation of soil and groundwater and to address impacts of nanoparticles in the subsurface on the biogeochemical conditions. As environmental nano-research continues to thrive, we hope this special issue will inspire even greater innovation and discoveries in the field. We thank all authors, reviewers, and the editorial staff of FESE for their time and contributions to this issue.
