Abstract:In this article, we discuss a couple of nonlinear Galerkin method (NLG) in finite element set up for viscoelastic fluid flow, mainly equations of motion arising in the flow of 2D Oldroyd model. We obtain improved error estimate in $L^{\infty}(\bL^2)$ norm, which is optimal in nature, for linear finite element approximation, in view of the error estimate available in literature, in $L^2(\bH^1)$ norm.

Abstract:Based on H1-Galerkin mixed finite element method with nonconforming quasi-Wilson element, a numerical approximate scheme is established for pseudo-hyperbolic equations under arbitrary quadrilateral meshes. The corresponding optimal order error estimate is derived by the interpolation technique instead of the generalized elliptic projection which is necessary for classical error estimates of finite element analysis.

Abstract:We present a two-grid finite element scheme for the approximation of a second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equation in two space dimensions. In the two-grid scheme, the full nonlinear problem is solved only on a coarse grid of size H . The nonlinearities are expanded about the coarse grid solution on the fine gird of size h . The resulting linear system is solved on the fine grid. Some a priori error estimates are derived with the H 1 -norm O ( h + H 2 ) for the two-grid finite element method. Compared with the standard finite element method, the two-grid method achieves asymptotically same order as long as the mesh sizes satisfy h = O ( H 2 ) .

Abstract:Nonlinear hyperbolic equation is studied by developing a linearized Galerkin finite element method (FEM) with nonconforming EQ1rot element. A time-discrete system is established to split the error into two parts which are called the temporal error and the spatial error, respectively. The temporal error is proved skillfully which leads to the analysis for the regularity of the time-discrete system. The spatial error is derived τ-independently with order O(h2+hτ) in broken H1-norm. The final unconditional superclose result of u with order O(h2+τ2) is deduced based on the above achievements. The two typical characters of this nonconforming EQ1rot element (see Lemma 1 below) play an important role in the procedure of proof. At last, a numerical example is provided to support the theoretical analysis. Here, h is the subdivision parameter, and τ, the time step.

Fast integral equation methods for linear and semilinear heat equations in moving domains

Abstract: We present a family of integral equation-based solvers for the linear or semilinear heat equation in complicated moving (or stationary) geometries. This approach has significant advantages over more standard finite element or finite difference methods in terms of accuracy, stability and space-time adaptivity. In order to be practical, however, a number of technical capabilites are required: fast algorithms for the evaluation of heat potentials, high-order accurate quadratures for singular and weakly integrals over space-time domains, and robust automatic mesh refinement and coarsening capabilities. We describe all of these components and illustrate the performance of the approach with numerical examples in two space dimensions.

Abstract:A framework for adaptive meshes based on the Hamilton-Schoen-Yau theory was proposed by Dvinsky. In a recent work (2001, J. Comput. Phys. 170, 562588), we extended Dvinsky's method to provide an efficient moving mesh algorithm which compared favorably with the previously proposed schemes in terms of simplicity and reliability. In this work, we will further extend the moving mesh methods based on harmonic maps to deal A with mesh adaptation in three space dimensions. In obtaining the variational mesh, we will solve an optimization problem with some appropriate constraints, which is in contrast to the traditional method of solving the Euter-Lagrange equation directly. The key idea of this approach is to update the interior and boundary grids simultaneously, rather than considering them separately. Application of the proposed moving mesh scheme is illustrated with some two- and three-dimensional problems with large solution gradients. The numerical experiments show,,v that our methods can accurately resolve detail features of singular problems in 3D. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the unconditionally optimal error estimates of the linearized backward Euler scheme with the weak Galerkin finite element method for semilinear parabolic equations. With the error splitting technique and elliptic projection, the optimal error estimates in L 2 -norm and the discrete H 1 -norm are derived without any restriction on the time stepsize. Numerical results on both polygonal and tetrahedral meshes are provided to illustrate our theoretical conclusions.

Abstract:In this paper, the unconditionally optimal H 1 -norm error estimate for a two-step fast L1 scheme is considered for a nonlinear subdiffusion equation, which involves the considerations of both the initial singularity of the solution and the computational complexity to evaluate the Caputo derivative. For the fully discrete scheme, we use the fast L1 scheme developed in [28] to speed up the evaluation of the Caputo derivative on nonuniform time step, employ the Galerkin finite element (FE) method to discretize the spatial direction, and take the Newton linearized method to approximate the nonlinear term. While the theory of the L 2 -norm error estimate is well studied, there are few works on the unconditional convergence of H 1 -norm error estimate of the linearized Galerkin FE scheme for nonlinear subdiffusion equations. The main reason is that it requires to find a suitable test function in the FE space. To this end, we here respectively take the time-discrete operator and Laplace operator as the suitable test function in the FE space, and combine an improved discrete fractional Grönwall inequality to achieve the unconditional error estimate in H 1 -norm. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a semi-discrete H1 -Galerkin mixed finite element approximation of one kind of nolocal second order nonlinear hyperbolic equation, which is often used to describe vibration of an elastic string. A priori error estimates for the semi-discrete scheme are derived. A fully discrete scheme is constructed and one numerical example is given to verify the theoretical findings.

Abstract:An -Galerkin mixed finite element method (MFEM) is presented for the nonlinear Kirchhoff-type problem by the bilinear element and zero order Raviart-Thomas element . Optimal error estimates of order O ( h ) and for the original variable u in norm and the flux variable in norm about the semi-discrete scheme and the linearized fully-discrete scheme are derived, respectively. Finally, some numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a least squares nonconforming finite element of low order for solving the transport equations. We give a detailed overview on the stability and the convergence properties of our considered methods in the stability norm. Moreover, we derive residual type a posteriori error estimates for the least squares nonconforming finite element methods under H-1-norm, which can be used as the error indicators to guide the mesh refinement procedure in the adaptive finite element method. The theoretical results are supported by a series of numerical experiments.

Abstract:In this paper, a semi-implicit finite element method is presented for the coupled Cahn–Hilliard and Navier–Stokes equations with the generalized Navier boundary condition for the moving contact line problems. In our method, the system is solved in a decoupled way. For the Cahn–Hilliard equations, a convex splitting scheme is used along with a P1-P1 finite element discretization. The scheme is unconditionally stable. A linearized semi-implicit P2-P0 mixed finite element method is employed to solve the Navier–Stokes equations. With our method, the generalized Navier boundary condition is extended to handle the moving contact line problems with complex boundary in a very natural way. The efficiency and capacity of the present method are well demonstrated with several numerical examples.

Abstract:We discuss a moving finite element method for solving vector systems of time dependent partial differential equations in one space dimension. The mesh is moved so as to equidistribute the spatial component of the discretization error in $H^1 $. We present a method of estimating this error by using p-hierarchic finite elements. The error estimate is also used in an adaptive mesh refinement procedure to give an algorithm that combines mesh movement and refinement. We discretize the partial differential equations in space using a Galerkin procedure with piecewise linear elements to approximate the solution and quadratic elements to estimate the error. A system of ordinary differential equations for mesh velocities are used to control element motions. We use existing software for stiff ordinary differential equations for the temporal integration of the solution, the error estimate, and the mesh motion. Computational results using a code based on our method are presented for several examples.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient nonconforming finite element method (FEM) is studied with EQ1rot element for a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation. First, we prove a novel result of the consistency error estimate with order O(h2) for EQ1rot element which leads to the superconvergent error estimate in broken H1-norm for semi-discrete scheme, while previous work only derive convergent results for this element. Second, a linearized backward Euler scheme is established and a time-discrete system is introduced to split the error into two parts, the temporal error and the spatial error. By using a rigorous analysis for the regularity of the time-discrete system and the proved characters of EQ1rot element, the optimal L2-error estimate is obtained without any time-step restrictions, which leads to the numerical solution can be bounded in L∞-norm by an inverse inequality unconditionally. Then, the supercloseness estimate is arrived at with the above achievements. Third, global superconvergence results are deduced through interpolated postprocessing technique. At last, numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis. Here, h is the subdivision parameter, and τ is the time step.

A moving mesh finite element method for Bernoulli free boundary problems

Abstract:A moving mesh finite element method is studied for the numerical solution of Bernoulli free boundary problems. The method is based on the pseudo-transient continuation with which a moving boundary problem is constructed and its steady-state solution is taken as the solution of the underlying Bernoulli free boundary problem. The moving boundary problem is solved in a split manner at each time step: the moving boundary is updated with the Euler scheme, the interior mesh points are moved using a moving mesh method, and the corresponding initial-boundary value problem is solved using the linear finite element method. The method can take full advantages of both the pseudo-transient continuation and the moving mesh method. Particularly, it is able to move the mesh, free of tangling, to fit the varying domain for a variety of geometries no matter if they are convex or concave. Moreover, it is convergent towards steady state for a broad class of free boundary problems and initial guesses of the free boundary. Numerical examples for Bernoulli free boundary problems with constant and non-constant Bernoulli conditions and for nonlinear free boundary problems are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the method and its ability to deal with various geometries and nonlinearities.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a discrete embedding inequality for the Raviart--Thomas mixed finite element methods for second order elliptic equations, which is analogous to the Sobolev embedding inequality in the continuous setting. Then, by using the proved discrete embedding inequality, we provide an optimal error estimate for linearized mixed finite element methods for nonlinear parabolic equations. Several numerical examples are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, two efficient two-grid finite element algorithms are proposed for solving two-dimensional nonlinear pseudo-parabolic integro-differential equations. Firstly, we obtain optimal error estimates of the fully discrete finite element method using a temporal-spatial error splitting technique in H1 and Lp norms. Then the two-grid technique to improve computation efficiency of the proposed finite element method. Error estimates in H1 and Lp norms of two-grid solutions are presented. Theoretical analysis shows that the two-grid algorithms maintain asymptotically optimal accuracy. Finally, numerical examples are provided to support our theoretical results and demonstrate the effectiveness of these methods.
