Abstract:In practice, there are three types of adaptive methods using the finite element approach, namely the h-method, p-method, and r-method. In the h-method, the overall method contains two parts, a solution algorithm and a mesh selection algorithm. These two parts are independent of each other in the sense that the change of the PDEs will affect the first part only. However, in some of the existing versions of the r-method (also known as the moving mesh method), these two parts are strongly associated with each other and as a result any change of the PDEs will result in the rewriting of the whole code. In this work, we will propose a moving mesh method which also contains two parts, a solution algorithm and a mesh-redistribution algorithm. Our efforts are to keep the advantages of the r-method (e.g., keep the number of nodes unchanged) and of the h-method (e.g., the two parts in the code are independent). A framework for adaptive meshes based on the Hamilton–Schoen–Yau theory was proposed by Dvinsky. In this work, we will extend Dvinsky's method to provide an efficient solver for the mesh-redistribution algorithm. The key idea is to construct the harmonic map between the physical space and a parameter space by an iteration procedure. Each iteration step is to move the mesh closer to the harmonic map. This procedure is simple and easy to program and also enables us to keep the map harmonic even after long times of numerical integration. The numerical schemes are applied to a number of test problems in two dimensions. It is observed that the mesh-redistribution strategy based on the harmonic maps adapts the mesh extremely well to the solution without producing skew elements for multi-dimensional computations.

Abstract:A framework for adaptive meshes based on the Hamilton-Schoen-Yau theory was proposed by Dvinsky. In a recent work (2001, J. Comput. Phys. 170, 562588), we extended Dvinsky's method to provide an efficient moving mesh algorithm which compared favorably with the previously proposed schemes in terms of simplicity and reliability. In this work, we will further extend the moving mesh methods based on harmonic maps to deal A with mesh adaptation in three space dimensions. In obtaining the variational mesh, we will solve an optimization problem with some appropriate constraints, which is in contrast to the traditional method of solving the Euter-Lagrange equation directly. The key idea of this approach is to update the interior and boundary grids simultaneously, rather than considering them separately. Application of the proposed moving mesh scheme is illustrated with some two- and three-dimensional problems with large solution gradients. The numerical experiments show,,v that our methods can accurately resolve detail features of singular problems in 3D. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

Abstract:This work is concerned with developing moving mesh strategies for solving problems defined on a sphere. To construct mappings between the physical domain and the logical domain, it has been demonstrated that harmonic mapping approaches are useful for a general class of solution domains. However, it is known that the curvature of the sphere is positive, which makes the harmonic mapping on a sphere not unique. To fix the uniqueness issue, we follow Sacks and Uhlenbeck [Ann. of Math. (2), 113 (1981), pp. 1-24] to use a perturbed harmonic mapping in mesh generation. A detailed moving mesh strategy including mesh redistribution and solution updating on a sphere will be presented. The moving mesh scheme based on the perturbed harmonic mapping is then applied to the moving steep front problem and the Fokker-Planck equations with high potential intensities on a sphere. The numerical experiments show that with a moderate number of grid points our proposed moving mesh algorithm can accurately resolve detailed features of singular problems on a sphere.

Abstract:This work presents the first effort in designing a moving mesh algorithm to solve the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations in the primitive variables formulation. The main difficulty in developing this moving mesh scheme is how to keep it divergence-free for the velocity field at each time level. The proposed numerical scheme extends a recent moving grid method based on harmonic mapping [R. Li, T. Tang, and P. W. Zhang, J. Comput. Phys., 170 (2001), pp. 562--588], which decouples the PDE solver and the mesh-moving algorithm. This approach requires interpolating the solution on the newly generated mesh. Designing a divergence-free-preserving interpolation algorithm is the first goal of this work. Selecting suitable monitor functions is important and is found challenging for the incompressible flow simulations, which is the second goal of this study. The performance of the moving mesh scheme is tested on the standard periodic double shear layer problem. No spurious vorticity patterns appear when even fairly coarse grids are used.

Abstract:Abstract. In this work we demonstrate some recent progress on moving mesh methods with application to computational fluid dynamics. The emphasis will be on the application to the gas dynamics governed by the hyperbolic conservation laws. Several test problems in oneand two dimensions are computed by using the moving mesh methods. The computations demonstrate that the moving mesh methods are efficient for solving problems with shock discontinuities, obtaining the same resolution with much less number of grid points than the uniform mesh approach.

Abstract:An improved meshless method is presented, with an emphasis on the detailed description of this new computational technique and its numerical implementations, by investigating the usefulness of a commonly neglected parameter. Two approaches to enforce essential boundary conditions are also thoroughly investigated. Numerical tests on a mathematical function are carried out as a means of validating the proposed method. It is seen that the proposed method is more robust than the conventional ones. Applications in solving electromagnetic problems are also presented.

Abstract: We present a family of integral equation-based solvers for the linear or semilinear heat equation in complicated moving (or stationary) geometries. This approach has significant advantages over more standard finite element or finite difference methods in terms of accuracy, stability and space-time adaptivity. In order to be practical, however, a number of technical capabilites are required: fast algorithms for the evaluation of heat potentials, high-order accurate quadratures for singular and weakly integrals over space-time domains, and robust automatic mesh refinement and coarsening capabilities. We describe all of these components and illustrate the performance of the approach with numerical examples in two space dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper, we use moving mesh finite element method based upon 4P(1) - P-1 element to solve the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations in 2D. Two-layer nested meshes are used including velocity mesh and pressure mesh, and velocity mesh can be obtained by globally refining pressure mesh. We use hierarchy geometry tree to store the nested meshes. This data structure make convienence for adaptive mesh method and the construction of multigrid preconditioning. Several numerical problems are used to show the effect of moving mesh.

Abstract:A moving mesh finite element method is studied for the numerical solution of Bernoulli free boundary problems. The method is based on the pseudo-transient continuation with which a moving boundary problem is constructed and its steady-state solution is taken as the solution of the underlying Bernoulli free boundary problem. The moving boundary problem is solved in a split manner at each time step: the moving boundary is updated with the Euler scheme, the interior mesh points are moved using a moving mesh method, and the corresponding initial-boundary value problem is solved using the linear finite element method. The method can take full advantages of both the pseudo-transient continuation and the moving mesh method. Particularly, it is able to move the mesh, free of tangling, to fit the varying domain for a variety of geometries no matter if they are convex or concave. Moreover, it is convergent towards steady state for a broad class of free boundary problems and initial guesses of the free boundary. Numerical examples for Bernoulli free boundary problems with constant and non-constant Bernoulli conditions and for nonlinear free boundary problems are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the method and its ability to deal with various geometries and nonlinearities.

Abstract:Since the accuracy of finite element solutions of partial differential equations is generally mesh dependent, especially when solutions have singularities and discontinuities, a proper mesh generation is often important and sometimes crucial for an accurate numerical approximation of such problems. In this paper, the mesh transformation method is applied to the boundary value problems of elliptic partial differential equations, and it is proved that the method leads to the optimal finite element solutions.

Abstract:A new meshless method using wavelets as shape functions based on the weak form is developed. The Lagrange multiplier method are used for imposing the essential boundary conditions. The paper also describes that an addition term, which vanishes in finite element type of methods and are generally ignored in most meshless formulations based on the weak form, must be incorporated in the proposed discrete equations. Detailed numerical results to validate the method are presented.

Abstract:A classical way of finding the harmonic map is to minimize the harmonic energy by the time evolution of the solution of a nonlinear heat diffusion equation. To arrive at the desired harmonic map, which is a steady-state of this equation, we propose an efficient quasi-implicit Euler method and analyze its convergence under some simplifications. If the initial map is not close to the steady-state solution, it is difficult to find the stability region of the time steps. To remedy this drawback, we propose a two-phase approach for the quasi-implicit Euler method. In order to accelerate the convergence, a variant time step scheme and a heuristic method to determine an initial time step are developed. Numerical results clearly demonstrate that the proposed method achieves high performance for computing the spherical conformal and Riemann mappings.

Abstract:The solutions tend to have large gradients, discontinuities, or sharp layers for convection-dominated convection–diffusion–reaction equations. Many studies have demonstrated the advantages of moving mesh and variational multiscale finite element method (VMFEM) in solving such problems. In this paper, we propose a new approach called the moving mesh variational multiscale finite element method (MM-VMFEM), which combines the benefits of both moving mesh and variational multiscale methods for solving convection–diffusion–reaction equations with dominant convection effects. The moving mesh method decouples the mesh equations from the underlying partial differential equations (PDEs) and constructs a connection between the physical and logical domains using harmonic mapping. This moving mesh method can change only the underlying PDEs algorithm partly when solving different differential equations and can keep the mesh topology unchanged after multiple numerical integration. The VMFEM decomposes the unknown scalar and test functions into coarse- and fine-scales, and the use of bubble functions to automatically obtain the stabilization parameters allows the VMFEM to be naturally combined with mesh adaptivity. The effectiveness of the proposed MM-VMFEM is verified by four numerical examples. The experimental results show that the MM-VMFEM can improve the computational accuracy and reduce the numerical spurious oscillations for convection-dominated problems.

Abstract:We discuss a moving finite element method for solving vector systems of time dependent partial differential equations in one space dimension. The mesh is moved so as to equidistribute the spatial component of the discretization error in $H^1 $. We present a method of estimating this error by using p-hierarchic finite elements. The error estimate is also used in an adaptive mesh refinement procedure to give an algorithm that combines mesh movement and refinement. We discretize the partial differential equations in space using a Galerkin procedure with piecewise linear elements to approximate the solution and quadratic elements to estimate the error. A system of ordinary differential equations for mesh velocities are used to control element motions. We use existing software for stiff ordinary differential equations for the temporal integration of the solution, the error estimate, and the mesh motion. Computational results using a code based on our method are presented for several examples.

Abstract:This paper studies the numerical solutions of semilinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) on unbounded spatial domains whose solutions blow up in finite time. There are two major difficulties usually in numerical solutions: the singularity of blow-up and the unboundedness. We propose local absorbing boundary conditions (LABCs) on the selected artificial boundaries by using the idea of unified approach (Brunner et al., SIAM J Sci Comput 31:4478–4496, (2010). Since the uniform fixed spatial meshes may be inefficient, we adopt moving mesh partial differential equation (MMPDE) method to adapt the spatial mesh as the singularity develops. Combining LABCs and MMPDE, we can effectively capture the qualitative behavior of the blow-up singularities in the unbounded domain. Moreover, the implementation of the combination consists of two independent parts. Numerical examples also illustrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the new method.
A General Moving Mesh Framework in 3d and Its Application for Simulating the Mixture of Multi-Phase Flows

Abstract:In this paper, we present an adaptive moving mesh algorithm for meshes of unstructured polyhedra in three space dimensions. The algorithm automatically adjusts the size of the elements with time and position in the physical domain to resolve the relevant scales in multiscale physical systems while minimizing computational costs. The algorithm is a generalization of the moving mesh methods based on harmonic mappings developed by Li et al. [J. Comput. Phys., 170 (2001), pp. 562588, and 177 (2002), pp. 365-393]. To make 3D moving mesh simulations possible, the key is to develop an efficient mesh redistribution procedure so that this part will cost as little as possible comparing with the solution evolution part. Since the mesh redistribution procedure normally requires to solve large size matrix equations, we will describe a procedure to decouple the matrix equation to a much simpler block-tridiagonal type which can be efficiently solved by a particularly designed multi-grid method. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed 3D moving mesh strategy, the algorithm is implemented in finite element simulations of fluid-fluid interface interactions in multiphase flows. To demonstrate the main ideas, we consider the formation of drops by using an energetic variational phase field model which describes the motion of mixtures of two incompressible fluids. Numerical results on two- and three-dimensional simulations will be presented.

Abstract:Meshfree methods,both their theoretical foundation and their applications to a variety of fields, are reviewed in detail.There is much less mesh-dependency in meshfree methods,which can eliminate possible mesh distortion and entanglement in mesh-based numerical methods,such as the finite element method or boundary element method.Meshfree methods show particular advantages in some fields where the finite element or boundary element method encounter difficulties.More than 30 kinds of meshfree methods are reviewed in this paper in the light of weighted residual method,and different meshfree methods can be viewed as different forms of weighted residual method and/or with different approximation functions.Various kinds of meshfree approximate schemes are presented in detail,including moving least square approximation,kernel and reproducing kernel approximation,partition of unity approximation,radial basis approximation,radial point interpolation and natural neighbor interpolation.Different forms of weighted residual method,such as Galerkin form,collocation form,local weak form,weighted least-square form,boundary integral form are also described, and corresponding numerical quadrature algorithms and implementation of boundary conditions are discussed. Furthermore,applications of meshfree methods to the fields of impact and explosion,crack propagation,hyper large deformation,structural optimization,fluid-solid interaction,biomechanics and micro- and nano-mechanics are reviewed,and their advantages over conventional numerical methods are demonstrated.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, meshfree Galerkin methods have become increasingly popular in solid and fluid mechanics applications. A variety of these methods have been developed, each incorporating unique meshfree approximation schemes to enhance their performance. In this study, we examine the application of the Moving Least Squares and Local Maximum-Entropy (LME) approximations within the framework of Optimal Transportation Meshfree for solving Galerkin boundary-value problems. We focus on how the choice of basis order and the non-negativity, as well as the weak Kronecker-delta properties of shape functions, influence the performance of numerical solutions. Through comparative numerical experiments, we evaluate the efficiency, accuracy, and capabilities of these two approximation schemes. The decision to use one method over the other often hinges on factors like computational efficiency and resource management, underscoring the importance of carefully considering the specific attributes of the data and the intrinsic nature of the problem being addressed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a tailored-finite-point method for the numerical simulation of the Helmholtz equation with high wave numbers in heterogeneous medium. Our finite point method has been tailored to some particular properties of the problem, which allows us to obtain approximate solutions with the same behaviors as that of the exact solution very naturally. Especially, when the coefficients are piecewise constant, we can get the exact solution with only one point in each subdomain. Our finite-point method has uniformly convergent rate with respect to wave number k in L-2-norm.

Abstract:According to some recent studies of meshless methods,a new technique of meshless methods was presented – the meshless Interpolating Moving Least Square(IMLS) method in square sphere.The method showed new formula in the approximations of the unknown variable,the choice of weighted function and the numerical integration in the square sphere.Concerning the method,the technique of IMLS was adopted for the approximations of the unknown variable,and the square sphere was used for the geometric form of the local influence field.The adoption of these techniques presented the features of mesh free that the nodes were placed and the numerical integration was performed without a mesh.The Dirichlet boundary condition was also satisfied.The method could be easily applied to initial or boundary value problems of PDE.Besides,excellent convergence rate,high accuracy and good efficiency of the method were demonstrated by the examples in the problem of 1D consolidation and the 2D elastic mechanics.It was very promising in engineering applications.
