Abstract:Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) is a novel time domain identification method, which directly uses operational response data to identify the system model by linear algebraic manipulations such as QR factorization and Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). This paper deals with SSI and its applications for structural modal identification. The NASA mini mast model is used for simulations to illustrate how to select input parameters, and to demonstrate identification precision. A real building structure, the Heritage Court Tower (HCT) in Canada is analyzed. From the simulation and test researches, the conclusions can be made to instruct how to identify structural modal parameters using SSI method.

Abstract:Parameter identification is currently a main topic in the field of structure health monitoring research.Stochastic Subspace Identification(SSI) is a linear approach developed in recent years.In this way,structural modal parameters can be obtained from ambient vibration.The key work in SSI is to gain the order of the system.Stabilization diagram is a novel approach to define the rank of the system,but it fails to yield false modes.In this paper the stabilization diagram is improved in connection with the problem.So the false modes can be picked out,and the precision of identification is enhanced.Finally,the method is applied in an arch bridge of steel tube concrete and the result shows that it enjoys a better efficiency in identification for the approach.

Abstract:An improved stochastic subspace identification (SSI) algorithm based on eigendecomposition was introduced to solve low efficiency problems of data-driven SSI. With the method, system modal parameters were identified with an extended observability matrix Tmi obtained through eigendecomposition of matrix CH. Compared with the traditional algorithm, it needed much less memory and computing time because it avoided QR decomposition of Hankel matrix and SVD of projection matrix. A numerical example of parameter estimation of a linear time-invariant system of 7 degrees of freedom and one experimental example of parameter estimation of a bridge model named Chao Tian Men were presented to demonstrate that the method dramatically improves the computing efficiency and still keeps accuracy.

Abstract:Machine learning brings a new paradigm to the traditional structural modal parameter identification problem. In this study, we propose a novel machine learning method for stochastic subspace identification (SSI) problem. The proposed method embeds the mathematical characteristics of modal identification into a neural network and formalizes the modal identification into optimization problem of deep neural networks (DNN). The network optimization process is the process of obtaining modal parameters, which can be implemented in a relatively autonomous manner with little manual intervention. The designed modal identification network includes two sub-neural-networks: a model order determination neural network and modal identification neural network. In the model order determination neural network, the singular values of the Toeplitz matrix, which is constructed by output covariance matrices are fed into the network, and the designed network can automatically determine the model order by the designed loss function. In the modal identification neural network, the SSI principles are informed into the neural network, and the designed network is used to identify the modal parameters which optimizes the designed loss function to obtain the system matrix and output matrix. The examples of a numerical simulation and two actual bridges are used to illustrate the ability of the proposed method. Results show that the proposed method is capable of operating automatically to extract modal information from structural responses with stronger anti-interference ability and the identified number of accurate modes are obviously increased.

Abstract:Structural modal parameter identification under ambient vibration is becoming the main research area. The main point of this method is identifying structural parameter by only the ambient excited output response signals. Stochastic subspace identification is just one of the approaches. It is a novel approach developed in recent years. It can identify the structural modal parameters by ambient vibration. Stochastic subspace identification is a time domain method, and can identify the frequency and damping ratio and mode at same time without FFT. The main theory of this approach is introduced at first. Then the modal parameters of the south bridge tower of the Third Nanjing Changjiang River Bridge are identified by stochastic subspace identification.

Abstract:Subspace model identification(SMI)methods,a new class of black-box algorithms to setting up a linear state space model directly from input-output data,have drawn much research attention recently.Compared with the classical linear system identification methods,SMI methods are attractive not only because of their numerical simplicity and stability,but also their availabilities for the state space form.In this paper,the basic idea of SMI methods and three basic algorithms,i.e.,N4SID,MOESP and CVA,are briefly addressed at first.Then comparison between the SMI methods and the classical system identification method-PEM(prediction error methods)is made based on the same data sets collected from a real industrial process.

Abstract:A method of modal parameter identification of structures using reconstructed displacements was proposed in the present research. The proposed method was developed based on the stochastic subspace identification (SSI) approach and used reconstructed displacements of measured accelerations as inputs. These reconstructed displacements suppressed the high-frequency component of measured acceleration data. Therefore, in comparison to the acceleration-based modal analysis, the operational modal analysis obtained more reliable and stable identification parameters from displacements regardless of the model order. However, due to the difficulty of displacement measurement, different types of noise interferences occurred when an acceleration sensor was used, causing a trend term drift error in the integral displacement. A moving average low-frequency attenuation frequency-domain integral was used to reconstruct displacements, and the moving time window was used in combination with the SSI method to identify the structural modal parameters. First, measured accelerations were used to estimate displacements. Due to the interference of noise and the influence of initial conditions, the integral displacement inevitably had a drift term. The moving average method was then used in combination with a filter to effectively eliminate the random fluctuation interference in measurement data and reduce the influence of random errors. Real displacement results of a structure were obtained through multiple smoothing, filtering, and integration. Finally, using reconstructed displacements as inputs, the improved SSI method was employed to identify the modal parameters of the structure.

Abstract:Stochastic subspace identification can be used to identify the modal parameters of a structure according to its dynamic response to ambient excitation. However, some high dimensional matrices (Toeplitz matrices) must be constructed in the process of identification, and lots of memory and computation time are cost to the singular value decomposition of these high dimensional matrixes. Stochastic subspace identification affects the computational efficiency seriously. Therefore, this paper investigates a new method for constructing lower-dimension Toeplitz matrices to improve the computing efficiency.Finally,a numerical simulation is presented to demonstrate the computing efficiency of the method.The result shows that the computing consumption of the proposed method is only 10.6% the computing consumption of the traditional stochastic subspace identification while the identification accuracy is maintained.

Abstract:Parameter identification is currently one of the main research topics in the area of structural health monitoring.Stochastic subspace identification is a novel approach developed recent years.It can identify the modal parameters of linear structure from ambient vibration of structure.The key issue of the method is projecting past data onto future data.Then an observability matrix and the Kalman filter state sequence are obtained.Kalman filter state sequence is a linear composition of past output data.A correlation is set up between past output and future state.Because the Hankel matrix is a semi-infinity matrix,the workload is weighty.For this reason,improving stochastic subspace identification is presented.The key part is a replacement of all past by the data of a test point.This will reduce the workload of computation.The method is evaluated by a numerical simulation example.

Abstract:<p>The stochastic subspace identification (SSI) method has been recognized as the most dominant and popular system identification technique in the time domain. Nevertheless, it cannot cope with the non-synchronicity of dynamic response measurements that happens sometimes in structural health monitoring practice. To overcome this, this study proposes a strategy for the SSI algorithm to realize system identification from non-synchronous dynamic response measurements. The modal identification is carried out in a pairwise manner by pairing a time-shifted signal with a common reference signal. The state space model is employed to fit the pair of reference and time-shifted signals and the SSI algorithm is exploited to extract the modal parameters. The core of the strategy is the tactical usage of the mean phase deviation (MPD) of the mode for seeking out the actual time lag as well as the actual mode shape components simultaneously. By so doing, the strategy fulfills integrated time lag estimation and modal extraction for non-synchronous dynamic response measurements. Furthermore, the strategy also overcomes the difficulty to determine the model order with the use of the stabilization diagram and reduces the computational cost substantially with the help of the periodicity of the MPD. To examine the performance of the strategy, intensive validations are conducted by making use of the non-synchronous acceleration measurements of the Jiangyin Bridge subjected to a ship collision and the artificially misaligned acceleration measurements of the Canton Tower struck by an earthquake. Both the time lags and the mode shapes identified by the strategy can be well validated, indicating that the proposed strategy is competent for modal identification of non-synchronous dynamic response measurements.</p>

Abstract:Vibration-based structural health monitoring usually needs to extract the vibration characteristics from operational vibration measurements. Stochastic subspace identification is a novel approach developed recent years. It can identify modal parameters of linear structure from ambient vibration of structure. The key issue in stochastic subspace identification is to gain the order of the system. Stabilization diagram is a novel approach to decide the order of the system. But stochastic subspace identification may yield false model. This is the main shortcoming of this method. This paper presents a method for two-stage stabilization diagram based stochastic subspace identification of structural modal parameters. The key part of this method is dividing the output signal of a structure into several segments and the stochastic subspace identification is used to each part of the output signal. Then the stabilization diagram is used to all the identified parameters of each part of the output signal. Then the false modes are distinguished and the real modes of structure are gained. The method is evaluated by the numerical simulation in a three-span continuous beam.

Abstract:Modal parameter estimation of operational structures is often a challenging task when confronted with unwanted distortions (outliers) in field measurements. Atypical observations present a problem to operational modal analysis (OMA) algorithms, such as stochastic subspace identification (SSI), severely biasing parameter estimates and resulting in misidentification of the system. Despite this predicament, no simple mechanism currently exists capable of dealing with such anomalies in SSI. Addressing this problem, this paper first introduces a novel probabilistic formulation of stochastic subspace identification (Prob-SSI), realised using probabilistic projections. Mathematically, the equivalence between this model and the classic algorithm is demonstrated. This fresh perspective, viewing SSI as a problem in probabilistic inference, lays the necessary mathematical foundation to enable a plethora of new, more sophisticated OMA approaches. To this end, a statistically robust SSI algorithm (robust Prob-SSI) is developed, capable of providing a principled and automatic way of handling outlying or anomalous data in the measured timeseries, such as may occur in field recordings, e.g. intermittent sensor dropout. Robust Prob-SSI is shown to outperform conventional SSI when confronted with 'corrupted' data, exhibiting improved identification performance and higher levels of confidence in the found poles when viewing consistency (stabilisation) diagrams. Similar benefits are also demonstrated on the Z24 Bridge benchmark dataset, highlighting enhanced performance on measured systems.

Modal Parameter Identification Based on Hilbert-Huang Transform and Stochastic Subspace Identification

Abstract:Two approaches are proposed for modal parameter identification of civil engineering structures based on Hilbert-Huang transform(HHT) and stochastic subspace identification(SSI).The first approach is based on HHT and natural excitation technique(NExT).Empirical mode decomposition(EMD) and Hilbert transform(HT) are used to extract the instantaneous characteristics of the original signal.Then,NExT and basic modal analysis theory are applied to identify modal parameters.The second approach is based on EMD and SSI.Each single modal response is obtained through processing the original signal by EMD,then the modal parameters are identified by SSI.Finally,the original signals from the shaking table test of a 12-storey reinforced concrete frame model are processed and modal parameters are identified by these approaches,respectively.Identification results and comparison with the results from traditional fast Fourier transform(FFT) and finite element analysis indicate that the proposed approaches are feasible and practical.

Abstract:The Stochastic Subspace Identification (SSI) method has attracted significant attention in the field of Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) for large civil engineering structures such as high-rise buildings. State-space-based identification methods often encounter the challenge of spurious modes, leading to extensive efforts to mitigate this issue, commonly through stabilization diagram techniques. Nonetheless, the accuracy of the stabilization diagrams can be compromised by various interferences and the presence of spurious poles (i.e., outliers) in the high-order region. Consequently, this diminishes the precision of the modal identification. This study introduces an improved automated OMA technique based on SSI to enhance the reliability and accuracy of modal estimation. The proposed approach encompasses modal identification using SSI coupled with automated interpretation of SSI outputs, employing rigorous validation criteria and clustering techniques. An essential component of this approach involves signal segmentation during the data preprocessing stage, enabling the effective removal of spurious poles and thus a more robust interpretation of modal identification results via the stabilization diagram in an automated fashion. A numerical example was employed to demonstrate the effectiveness and applicability of the method. Subsequently, the proposed methodology is validated using field measurements conducted on two high-rise buildings.

Abstract:Stochastic subspace identification (SSI) and its variants are widely used in conventional structural health monitoring (SHM) owing to their high computation robustness and estimation accuracy. Conventional SHM is based on a Nyquist (high-rate and uniform) sampling dictated by Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem. As data quantity of SHM is increasing with duration and equipment at an ever-growing rate and new applications of SHM with strict constricts on sampling are emerging one by one, sub-Nyquist sampling, also known as compressive sampling has increasingly been used in SHM in recent years. Therefore, despite the success of SSI method and its algorithmic variants, a significant drawback lies in their handling of sub-Nyquist data. To overcome this drawback, we set out to extend the applicable scenarios of SSI from Nyquist (high-rate/uniform) sampling to sub-Nyquist (low-rate/nonuniform) sampling. In this paper, we propose a compressive stochastic subspace identification (CSSI) which can identify modal parameters from sub-Nyquist/compressed data. Specifically, CSSI involves two aspects: covariance matrix reconstruction and system parameter identification. We find the complete covariance matrix in classic SSI can also be estimated/reconstructed by sub-Nyquist samples. More importantly, this reconstruction can be physically guaranteed through special sampling patterns without sparsity prior. Based on the above findings, we develop a compressed covariance sensing-based covariance matrix reconstruction technique and derive the optimal sub-Nyquist sampling pattern such that the reconstruction is hassle-free and efficient. Then, we perform modal parameter identification on the basis of the reconstructed covariance matrix. Finally, the effectiveness of CSSI is validated by simulations and experiments. In short, CSSI, as a new extension of SSI, can extract modal parameters at lower sampling rates than what is prescribed by the classic SSI. The implication of this is the possibility that CSSI for operational modal analysis will require fewer measurements thus it would reduce the storage requirement and the bandwidth for transmitting data.

Abstract:Based on relationship between strain and displacement,the stochastic state-space model of a system is established with strains and strain change rates being state variables.On the basis of the model,like the stochastic subspace method with experimental displacement modal parameter identification,the stochastic subspace method for experimental strain modal parameter identification is established.The numerical simulation experiment shows that the strain modes can be identified by the proposed method accurately.Because only output is needed in the method,it can be used in the stain modal parameter identification for the structure under ambient excitation.

Abstract:In this paper, the on-orbit identification of modal parameters for a spacecraft is investigated. Firstly, the coupled dynamic equation of the system is established with the Lagrange method and the stochastic state-space model of the system is obtained. Then, the covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification（SSI-COV） algorithm is adopted to identify the modal parameters of the system. In this algorithm, it just needs the covariance of output data of the system under ambient excitation to construct a Toeplitz matrix, thus the system matrices are obtained by the singular value decomposition on the Toeplitz matrix and the modal parameters of the system can be found from the system matrices. Finally,numerical simulations are carried out to demonstrate the validity of the SSI-COV algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the SSI-COV algorithm is effective in identifying the modal parameters of the spacecraft only using the output data of the system under ambient excitation.

Abstract:An improved stochastic subspace identification algorithm is introduced to solve the low computational efficiency problem of the Data-driven stochastic subspace identification. Compared with the conventional algorithm, it needs much less cost of memory and computing time because it does not have a process of the QR decomposition of Hankel matrix. Model similarity index is proposed to measure the reliability of the modes obtained by the improved stochastic subspace identification. Furthermore, the stabilization diagram in combination with the modal similarity index is adopted to effectively indicate spurious modes resulting from noise and model redundancy. A criterion named the modal norm is introduced to indicate the dominating mode. A numerical example on the parameter estimation of a linear time-invariant system of 7 degrees of freedom and one experimental example on the parameter estimation of Chaotianmen bridge model in Chongqing are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the method. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
