Abstract:Mutative Scale Measurement is often used to measure the characteristics of mechanical and electrical equipments/components in manufacturing industry. A typical case is the straightness measurement of large-scale rails. Due to the uncertainty of surface error distribution, and difference in the size and the locations of sample points, the evaluated value has a certain degree of uncertainty, which reduces the accuracy of the measurement. Since the decrease of uncertainty is at the expense of higher measurement cost, optimization of measurement cost for an acceptable uncertainty becomes a significant issue. This paper describes the composition of the uncertainty that caused by the measuring process and analyzes the uncertainty caused by sample size insufficiency. On the basis of these arguments, a model has been proposed to calculate the minimum sample size which meets the requirement of measurement uncertainty. Case studies are carried out to demonstrate the application of the derived methodology on sampling strategy. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A new procedure on random uncertainty modeling is presented for vibration analysis of a straight pipe conveying fluid when the pipe is fixed at both ends. Taking real conveying condition into account, several randomly uncertain loads and a motion constraint are imposed on the pipe and its corresponding equations of motion, which are established from the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and the nonlinear Lagrange strain theory previously. Based on the stochastically nonlinear dynamic theory and the Galerkin method, the equations of motion are reduced to the finite discretized ones with randomly uncertain excitations, from which the vibration characteristics of the pipe are investigated in more detail by some previously developed numerical methods and a specific Poincaré map. It is shown that, the vibration modes change not only with the frequency of the harmonic excitation but also with the strength and spectrum width of the randomly uncertain excitations, quasi-periodic-dominant responses can be observed clearly from the point sets in the Poincaré’s cross-section. Moreover, the nonlinear elastic coefficient and location of the motion constraint can be adjusted properly to reduce the transverse vibration amplitude of the pipe.

Abstract:This paper introduces the background of the use of mining belt conveyors, and summarizes the current research status and application of the commonly used methods for measuring the conveying capacity of belt conveyors. The development trend of belt conveyor conveying capacity measurement method in the future is put forward, that is, high measurement accuracy, strong anti-interference, and strong adaptability. At the same time, it is pointed out that a variety of combined measurement methods or non-contact measurement methods will become the belt conveyor conveying capacity. The mainstream method of measurement, the future development needs to be accompanied by the common development of artificial intelligence, image processing, machinery, electronics and other technologies.

Abstract:In order to improve the measurement accuracy and efficiency of bulk material transported by large-capacity belt conveyor, an online dynamic non-contact metering system based on laser triangulation is designed on the belt conveyor platform. The system includes: laser Scanners, industrial camera, signal processing software, mechanical assemblies. High-precision basic measurement data is an important guarantee for the accuracy of bulk flow measurement. The laser scanner is used as a line source, and the scanning frequency is set to 300HZ, which is installed on the belt conveyor. Industrial camera accepts images produced by a line source projected onto the bulk surface. The signal processing software system analyzes the images, and uses the triangulation method directly calculate the three-dimensional contour information and volume flow of the bulk material. The flow filtering algorithm filters the instantaneous flow, smoothing the fluctuation of the flow data to reflect the real changes of the dry and wet degree of the bulk material on the belt, the degrees of surface cracking and shapes. Establish a mathematical model based on neural network and apply the belt shaking elimination algorithm to correct the previously calculated flow data to reduce the measurement error. In order to restore the actual belt conveyor bulk transportation conditions, a test belt with length 20m and speed 2m/s was produced according to the actual size. The physical simulation test of bulk material for potassium salt was carried out, the results show that the on-line measurement method based on laser triangular method has high efficiency and stable operation, and eliminates the influence of bulk density. The measurement error is ≤3.

Abstract:In view of applying the static measurement theory to evaluate the measurement uncertainty of a testing system, this paper develops a comprehensive coal mine pump performance testing system based on virtual instruments, and applies unascertained theory to evaluate the system's dynamic measurement uncertainty. Compared with the traditional measurement uncertainty of A kind and B kind, this method is without the limitation of the direct measurement, and the question condition and the evaluation better fit reality.

Abstract:Accurate and reliable measurement of conveyor belt speed and vibration is of great importance in a variety of production and manufacturing industries. This paper presents the design, implementation and experimental assessment of an electrostatic sensor array for simultaneous measurement of conveyor belt speed and vibration in an on-line, continuous and non-contact manner. The sensor array is arranged in a 2x3 matrix, with the belt running between two rows, each having three identical sensing elements. The three signals in a row are cross-correlated for speed calculation and the results are fused to give accurate measurement. The dominant vibration mode of the belt is identified by analyzing the spectra of the sensor signals in a column. Experiments conducted on a purpose-built test rig show that the system can measure belt speed with relative error less than +/- 1.25% over the range of 2 to 10 m/s. Both the dominant vibration frequency and amplitude increase with the belt speed, but the amplitude will saturate when the belt stretch limit is reached at a higher belt speed.

Abstract:Measurement results of all quantities are inevitably subject to uncertainties. Proper estimation and expression of uncertainties are important to every domain of scientific and engineering researches. In this paper, the uncertainty of a vortex flowmeter was evaluated based on a novel mathematical measurement model and airflow experiment results. The proposed model was featured by regarding the vortex flowmeter and its calibration equipment as an entire measurement system, on which the uncertainty evaluation was carried out. The experiments were conducted in a 50-mm-diameter pipe with the Reynolds numbers from 9.42×103 to 8.48×104, and vortex frequencies were calculated by spectrum analysis of the differential pressures obtained on the pipe wall. The uncertainty analysis procedure followed the recommendations in the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. The results show that in the flowrates studied, the maximal uncertainty of the tested vortex flowmeter is less than 6.0% of the base value. Besides, higher measurement uncertainty takes place at lower flowrates, and the uncertainty appears to be constant when the flowrate is greater than a certain value. Among the relevant uncertainty sources, frequency resolution causes the biggest contribution to the total uncertainty especially at lower flowrates, and the uncertainty arose from the calibration system is less minor compared with uncertainties associated with the vortex frequency. It indicates that an effective strategy of reducing the uncertainty caused by the vortex frequency is improving its resolution, accordingly reducing the total uncertainty of a vortex flowmeter measurement.

Abstract:In mining operation, measuring the speed of a belt conveyor is important for safe and efficient production. The contact measurement system is the mainstream choice for existing measuring speed systems, but the contact method cannot avoid some potential problems and hidden dangers in the running process of belt conveyor. A novel contactless measurement system based on optical flow techniques is designed in this study, which can calculate running speed of belt conveyor in real time. During the operation of belt conveyor, it can be found that most regions of the images are similar when the camera is set to high-speed continuous shooting mode. These similar image regions have a certain displacement change in the moving direction of the belt conveyor due to the time difference of its shooting, and can be described in a simplified way which is the image feature keypoint. The machine vision algorithm extracts image feature keypoints and acquires the optical flow information of image feature keypoints. Motion displacement information including the displacement change can be extracted by analyzing of optical flow information about captured images to calculate the running speed. The contactless measuring speed system is verified by experiments. Experimental results show that the measuring accuracy can be presented by indicators with RMSE of 0.042 m/s and MAE of 0.029 m/s.

Abstract:For the conveyor belt, variable material flow influences the energy efficiency of the speed control technology significantly. The fluctuation of material flow on the conveyor belt will lead to the detrimental vibrations on both the belt and the conveyor while the conveyor works at certain speeds. In order to improve the model inaccuracy caused by the uniform bulk material flow assumption in the current conveyor belt model, the paper establishes a high-precision dynamic model that can consider speed control of a conveyor belt under non-uniform bulk material transportation. In this dynamic model, a non-uniform bulk material distribution model is firstly proposed based on laser scanning technology. Then, a high-precision longitudinal dynamic model is proposed to investigate the dynamic behavior of a belt conveyor. Considering the micro-units of actual load on a conveyor belt, it can well describe the transient state of the conveyor belt. These models can be used to determine the optimal speed for safety and energy conservation in operation. Experimental results are used to validate the proposed dynamic model for analyzing belt mechanical behavior under non-uniform bulk material distribution on the belt. The results show that the proposed models can be used for optimizing the operating procedures of belt conveyor systems.

Abstract:According to the ISO standard “Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement” and the technical measurement specification of China “Evaluation and Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement”,general procedure for evaluating uncertainties of thermocouples based temperature measurement system was deduced in this study.Taking a typical thermocouples system as an example,detailed steps of calculating its uncertainties were presented first,and then the influence of each uncertainty component was analyzed.At last,relevant measures for reducing uncertainties were put forward aiming at optimizing the performance of the temperature measurement system using thermocouples.

Abstract:This study presents a methodology for the probabilistic analysis of the environmental vibrations induced by high-speed trains considering the uncertainty of soil parameters. A deterministic ground vibration prediction model with high calculation efficiency is developed to evaluate the train-induced ground vibration. Then uncertain soil parameters are treated as random variables based on the field measurement results. With the aid of Monte Carlo simulation, probabilistic analysis is performed to find the statistical information of the uncertain environmental vibration level and to estimate its probability of exceeding the allowable vibration limit. It is found that the variability of the train-induced vibration level becomes remarkable as the soil variability and train speed increase. Without considering soil variability, the deterministic analysis would give wrong information for decision makers when evaluating the vibration limit exceedance of train-induced ground vibration.

Abstract:Multiple V-belt drives are applied widely to the mechanical engineering industry. To improve their performance and reduce their risk in the course of running, some reliability models of multiple V-belt drives have been presented in recent years. In these models the lengths of individual belts in a multiple V-belt drive were regarded as identical. However, in practice the length deviations among individual belts in a multiple V-belt drive do exist. In this paper, the effect of belt length deviation on the transmitted power of a multiple V-belt drive is analysed in detail. The operation risk of a multiple V-belt drive is defined as the probability that the actual transmitted power is less than the rated power that ensures the multiple V-belt drives to perform its intended task. Then an approach to risk evaluation of a multiple V-belt drive is presented by using the universal generating function technique and the reliability model of a multistate weighted k-out-of-n system. Finally, the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by an example.

Abstract:With their long transportation distance and high productivity, belt conveyors are characterized as the main equipment for bulk material transportation in coal mines and other key industries. However, its speed detection method has always been an engineering challenge under harsh working conditions. In this work, the elastic-optical effect of the polarization-maintaining fiber is used to design a fiber ring laser vibration sensing system based on a fiber-optic Sagnac interferometer vibration sensor and its packaging structure. The vibration detection is achieved by detecting the change in optical power at the working wavelength, and the belt conveyor speed measurement is completed by detecting the vibration frequency. With such a method, the belt conveyor speed measurement obtained a relative error of less than 1.88%. The proposed method bears the characteristics of anti-electromagnetic interference, intrinsic explosion-proof, and adapts to the harsh smoke and dust working environment, which has a wide range of application prospects in the fields of engineering, machinery, security, etc.

Uncertainty Analysis of Flow Measurement of the VOCs Sampler

Abstract:In this paper, the flow measurement uncertainty of the VOCs sampler is analyzed in detail which is widely applied in environmental monitoring, medical and health care, factories, and mining enterprises.Based on the detection of the soap film flow-meter standard device and the mass flow-meter standard device, the mathematical and physical uncertainty model of the VOCs sampler is derived and obtained.The flow measurement uncertainty is evaluated and analyzed respectively based on the mathematical and physical uncertainty models of two standard devices.The relative expansion uncertainty of the soap film flow-meter standard device and the mass flow-meter standard device for detecting VOCs sampler is calculated to be 0.9% and 1.4% respectively.There is a difference in the relative expanded uncertainty of the two standard devices for detecting VOCs samplers, which is mainly due to the difference in the standard uncertainty introduced in the standard device and the repeatability test.In particular, the above process and result analysis are effective for the VOCs sampler with the high-precision electronic flow-meter as the standard conditions.

Abstract:On-line vibration monitoring plays an important role in the fault diagnosis and prognosis of industrial belt drive systems. This paper presents a novel measurement technique based on electrostatic sensing to monitor the transverse vibration of power transmission belts in an on-line, continuous, and non-contact manner. The measurement system works on the principle that variations in the distance between a strip-shaped electrode and the naturally electrified dielectric belt give rise to a fluctuating current output. The response of the sensor to a belt moving both axially and transversely is numerically calculated through finite-element modeling. Based on the sensing characteristics of the sensor, the transverse velocity of the belt is characterized through the spectral analysis of the sensor signal. Experiments were conducted on a two-pulley belt drive system to verify the validity of the sensing technique. The belt vibration at different axial speeds was measured and analyzed. The results show that the belt vibrates at well-separated modal frequencies that increase with the axial speed. A closer distance between the electrode and the belt makes higher order vibration modes identifiable, but also leads to severer signal distortion that produces higher order harmonics in the signal.

Abstract:Based on influence coefficient method, the measurement model of dynamic balancing machines was established. However, the procedure provided by ISO-GUM for measurement uncertainty analysis cannot solve its nonlinearity and cannot reflect the dynamics of the measurement system during its whole lifecycle. Aiming at the above problems, the distribution propagation relationship between unbalance and vibration response as well as influence coefficients was set up, and then Monte Carlo simulation method was adopted to calculate the distribution of measurement values. Moreover, periodic metrological assessment was applied to trace the dynamics of influence coefficients, and Bayesian method was used to suppress the disturbance of measurement noises in the dynamic estimation of influence coefficients. Finally, through updating the distribution of influence coefficients, the dynamics of system states was reflected into the analysis of measurement uncertainty. Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively and accurately trace the system dynamics, and can achieve accurate estimation of measurement uncertainty of measurement systems during its whole lifecycle.
