Abstract:As one of the seven basic units in the International System of Units (SI), the temperature quantity is also the most important physical parameter of the ocean. The development of high-performance temperature sensing technology methods and sensors to achieve high-precision measurement of ocean temperature and compensation of elemental parameters is an important guarantee to improve ocean monitoring technology and promote the development of ocean resources. In this paper, we use mask lithography method combined with magnetron sputtering method to study the effect of microstructure size parameters of platinum film resistors on their temperature sensing performance, such as temperature coefficient, measurement accuracy, etc. This experiment simply and accurately determines the effect of the length and width of the resistor wire on the measurement error and temperature coefficient (TCR) of the platinum film resistor, and achieves the preparation of high precision and high stability platinum film resistors by controlling the structural parameters of the platinum film resistor wire.

Abstract:Radiative thermal management has advantages in precision electronic instruments owing to zero-energy consumption and high integration convenience. The possibility to acquire high-performance thermal stability through engineering the surface emissivity of object has been investigated. Herein, developing a smart coat was reported that could passively maintain the temperature of objects (silicon chips) in a predefined thermal window to avoid overheating or overcooling in vacuum. The technique implements using a multilayer structure incorporating a 30 nm thick VO2 phase-change medium having a 300% modulation depth for emissivity under varying temperatures. In the experiment, a 1.78 mu m thick smart coat could raise the temperature stability of a regular coat by similar to 2.0 times. The potential of the work remains in thermal radiation for smart temperature management especially in space applications.

Abstract:A thermal gas flow measurement is proposed based on heat transfer principle of single platinum resistance.Firstly,the temperature characteristics are studied at different surrounding temperatures and various currents passing through the resistance.Then,the measurement principle and temperature compensation are analyzed under the developed circuit.Finally,The constant temperature algorithm is designed to control the sensor at two different temperature,and the gas flowrate is obtained from the output voltage of the sensor.The research results show that the measurement accuracy is within 1% and the ratio of the dynamic measurement range is close to 100:1.

Abstract:Real-time monitoring of cell temperature fluctuation can help researchers better understand physiological phenomena and the effects of drug treatment on cells, which is a novel and important tool for cellular informatics. The platinum (Pt) temperature sensor is widely used in temperature measurement with the advantages of strong stability, great accuracy, and high sensitivity. However, the commercially available Pt sensors have large thermal resistance and heat capacity which are difficult to be applied for cell temperature measurement because only a very small amount of heat flux is generated by live cells. In this study, we designed a system using precision Pt thin-film temperature sensors with low heat capacity and thermal resistance. The Pt thin-film sensors are covered by a silicon nitride insulation layer grafted with a self-assembled multilayer silane film for promoting cell adhesion. The temperature coefficient of resistance of the Pt temperature sensor was about 2100 ppm/degrees C. The four-wire lead design next to the sensor detection area ensured maximum accuracy, resulting in a system noise below 0.01 degrees C over a long time. HEK-293T and HeLa cells were cultured on the sensor surface, respectively. The temperature fluctuation of 293T cells was monitored in a cell culture medium, showing a temperature increase of about 0.05-0.12 degrees C. The temperature fluctuation of HeLa cells treated with cisplatin was also measured and recorded, indicating a temperature decrease of 0.01 degrees C first and then a gradual temperature increase of 0.04 degrees C. The Pt sensor system we developed demonstrated high sensitivity and long stability for cell temperature fluctuation monitoring, which can be widely used in cell activity and cellular informatics studies.

Abstract:The internal hot-end components of aeroengines operate in a high-temperature environment are susceptible to cracks or falling blocks due to thermal fatigue and other effects. The rapid changes in heat flux at these defects can lead to engine failure. We propose a miniaturized sensor capable of monitoring heat flux change in a high-temperature environment. The sensor is based on a thermopile, connected in series with the platinum–10% rhodium/platinum (Pt-Rh10/Pt) thermocouples as the basic unit on a ceramic plate sized mm3. Nanocomposite silicon dioxide is adopted as a thermal insulation material to generate a temperature difference at the hot and cold junctions, which is distributed in the center and results in a thermal voltage output in the millivolt range. The heat flux sensor (HFS) can operate at temperatures up to 1000 °C with a good repeatability. The output voltage at a heat flux of 189.6 kW/m2 is 0.4113 mV, and the dynamic response time of HFS is 0.25 s. The screen printing process enables the batch preparation of micro-HFSs for high-temperature device surfaces with small areas.

Abstract:In order to improve the missile temperature measurement precision,a kind of multi-point acquisition temperature sensor based on a platinum resistance was put forward.Constant current source was used to reduced power consumption of precision platinum,the temperature drift was reduced by four wire system and symmetric assembled data amplifier circuit.The signal was filtered by five order low-pass filter MAX280,was put to A/D conversion,and was connected through X9241.AT89S52 controlled to adjust the output of the zero drift,the least square method was used in the segmented range.Experiments show that the temperature error is less than 0.05 ℃ between the temperature range of-50 ℃～400 ℃.At present,the circirt as the core temperature measurement and control system has been used in a missile system.

Abstract:Effects of electroless nickel plating on resistivity-temperature (R-T) characteristics of (Ba1−XPbX)TiO3 thermistor were studied. Comparison experiments showed that not only the permeation of plating solution, but also the reaction of electroless nickel plating influences the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, and that the two effects are different in nature. It is first proposed in this paper that hydrogen atoms generated in electroless nickel plating may reduce components of PTC ceramics.

Abstract:Temperature dependence of thermal resistance of a bare joint between two crossed platinum wires was measured using a quasi steady-state T-type probe in the temperature range of 100–300K. The thermal resistance was found to decrease rapidly as the temperature increased from 100 to 200K, then the trend slowed down, which could be explained by the temperature behaviors of the hardness and elastic modulus of platinum. Considering both the microscopic and macroscopic thermal resistances, the calculated results fitted well with the experimental data, and the obtained conductance–load exponent was also within the reasonable range.

Abstract:Efficient thermoelectric materials have been extensively investigated for energy harvest and portable refrigeration elements. Their thermal properties are of importance to improve the performance of thermoelectric devices. In the present work, the electrothermal technique is developed to simultaneously measure the specific heat and thermal conductivity of individual thin samples suspended across two heat sinks, resorting to the pulsed direct currents with or without a dc offset. The temperature evolution due to Joule self-heating is recorded and compared with the numerical solutions of transient heat conduction equations using the finite volume method. The thermal conductivity is determined by the steady temperature level and the specific heat by the transient temperature rise or relaxation. This technique is tested by a 10 μm thick platinum wire and the thermal conductivity and specific heat are in good agreement with the literature values. In addition, the influences of thermal radiation and thermal boundary resistance between the sample and heat sinks on the experimental results are discussed. This approach could also be extended to individual nano-sized samples as nanofilms and nanowires. Copyright © 2009 by ASME.

Abstract:The thermal measurement sensor applied to hypersonic vehicles requires characteristic size in the order of micrometers and characteristic time in the order of microseconds. The measurement criteria of localized detection, high temporal-spatial precision, and long-term stability cannot all be reached by current thermal measuring techniques. This work presents a temperature sensor with excellent temporal-spatial resolution that can measure both in-plane and out-of-plane heat flow. The sensor was made of thin platinum nano-film and an aluminum nitride ceramic sheet. The sensor was calibrated using a thermostatic vacuum chamber and used for in-plane and out-of-plane heat flow measurements. The temperature measurement accuracy of the sensor was estimated to be 0.01 K. The sensor's resolution for measuring heat flow density is more than 500 W/m2 and its measurement uncertainty is roughly 3%. To ensure the structural stability of the device, the aluminum nitride ceramic sheet was chosen as the substrate of the thermal sensing unit, and the response time became longer due to the high thermal conductivity of aluminum nitride. The suspension platinum nano-film sensor can reach a sub-microsecond response time according to the theoretical derivation. Experimental results of pneumatic thermal effects of high-temperature flames using the sensor prove that the designed sensor has good sensitivity and accuracy.

Abstract:The influence of size effects on the thermoelectric properties of thin platinum films is investigated and compared to the bulk. Structural properties, like the film thickness and the grain size, are varied. We correlate the electron mean free path with the temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity and the absolute Seebeck coefficient <math> S Pt</math> of platinum. A measurement platform was developed as a standardized method to determine <math> S Pt</math> and show that <math> S Pt , film</math> is reduced compared to <math> S Pt , bulk</math>. Boundary and surface scattering reduce the thermodiffusion and the phonon drag contribution to <math> S Pt , film</math> by nearly the same factor. We discuss in detail on behalf of a model, which describes the temperature dependence of the absolute Seebeck coefficient, the influence of size effects of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon interaction on <math> S Pt</math>.

Abstract:Dynamic high-temperature field measurements have garnered substantial interest for various promising applications, such as the health monitoring of aviation components. 3D printing offers unprecedented opportunities for the development of curved structure-function integrated sensors. However, most current resistance temperature detector (RTD) arrays based on 3D printing technology work well only within a narrow temperature range. Their application at high temperatures remains a significant challenge because of the lack of efficient manufacturing processes. Herein, a high-temperature thick film platinum (Pt) RTD array is presented based on 3D printing technology, suitable for high-temperature field measurement sensing applications at 50−800 °C. Three stages of Pt film sintering were revealed through the analysis of the microstructure, phase composition, and electrical properties during the sintering process. Compared to sputtered films, printed Pt films, which are confirmed to contain glass powder, exhibit excellent anti-aggregation and high-temperature properties. The resulting Pt RTD array shows outstanding stability (drift rate of 0.07%/h at 800 °C), high accuracy (0.75% full-scale), and can realize temperature gradient monitoring of a two-dimensional temperature field. The potential applications of the Pt RTD array, including bolt and rocket engine tester exhaust flame temperature monitoring, were demonstrated. This study paves the way for printing RTD arrays directly on curved parts.

Abstract:Energy transformation, which can be described as temperature variations, is present in all activities of cellular metabolism. Detecting the temperature of numerous cells over the course of their lives is useful for studying the cellular physiological function and investigating the pathophysiology of illnesses. Current cell thermometric technologies, such as luminous temperature sensors, infrared thermometers, and thermocouple thermometers, have their own limitations, such as complicated operation, low repeatability, and inability to measure cell temperature in normal situations. Here, we have developed a high-precision platinum temperature sensor with small heat capacity, good heat conduction, excellent stability and biological compatibility, which made it possible to sense cells heat signal. The platinum resistance sensor's temperature coefficient of resistance was around 2800 ppm degrees C-1, with a good linear correlation (R (2) > 0.999) between resistance and temperature from 35 degrees C to 43 degrees C. The noise of the sensor system was below 0.02 degrees C, giving a small and stability noise in detection. The detecting cells were CHO-K1 cells. They caused a temperature increase of about 0.075 degrees C, which is higher than the sensor without cells. This platinum sensor has been found to be useful for in situ temperature measurement of cells, which is important for investigating cell informatics and pathology.

Abstract:The temperature sensor presented in this paper is based on a microwave dielectric resonator, which uses alumina ceramic as a substrate to survive in harsh environments. The resonant frequency of the resonator is determined by the relative permittivity of the alumina ceramic, which monotonically changes with temperature. A rectangular aperture etched on the surface of the resonator works as both an incentive and a coupling device. A broadband slot antenna fed by a coplanar waveguide is utilized as an interrogation antenna to wirelessly detect the sensor signal using a radio-frequency backscattering technique. Theoretical analysis, software simulation, and experiments verified the feasibility of this temperature-sensing system. The sensor was tested in a metal-enclosed environment, which severely interferes with the extraction of the sensor signal. Therefore, frequency-domain compensation was introduced to filter the background noise and improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the sensor signal. The extracted peak frequency was found to monotonically shift from 2.441 to 2.291 GHz when the temperature was varied from 27 to 800 °C, leading to an average absolute sensitivity of 0.19 MHz/°C.

Abstract:In the research of EPA temperature transducer, Platinum temperature-resistance is used as forward transducer input. Because standard format of is a quartic equation on when temperature is between -200 and 0 centigrade, a suitable method must be found so that we can calculate the temperature value online. On the same time, this method should be easy to realize and fit to be applied in embedded environment. So in this article, a new analytic method will be argued, which bases on the theory of quartic equation with one known and cubic equation with one known. The calculation result is compared with Newton’s method and the error is analyzed through MATLAB. It is proved that this analytic method has no model error and the time for calculating is fixed and it can also be applied in similar fields if necessary.
Experimental study of chromium oxide thin films as an intermediate layer for Pt-based temperature sensor applications

Abstract:This paper reports, the impact of high-temperature annealing on temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of platinum thin films, by using chromium oxide as an intermediate adhesion layer. Chromium oxide thin films were prepared by using the RF magnetron sputtering technique. These thin films were then characterized with the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to optimize thickness and identify their elemental compositions. Thin film platinum resistance temperature detector (RTD) prototype devices, with sensing element of width ~ 40 μm and thickness of ~ 164 nm were fabricated and their TCR values were evaluated with and without thermal annealing treatment. The average value of temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) was observed to be ~ 1976 ppm/°C without annealing, which increased to ~ 2839 ppm/°C with annealing up to 1000 °C. Finally, for practical applications, an electronic interface circuit for the resistance temperature detector (RTD) device was used, to demonstrate the functioning of the devices for their end application in temperature sensing. These results clearly demonstrate that chromium oxide can be used as an alternate adhesion layer, for enhancement in TCR of platinum thin films that are required for various MEMS applications.

Abstract:A method of constructing a small platinum resistance thermometer is described in which a formerless coil is contained in a fine glass U-tube. The outer glass sheath is about 6 mm. in diameter and is hermetically sealed. The lag constant of the thermometer is 5 sec. It is shown that the reproducibility of R0 over the temperature range from -180 to 600° C. is ±0.001° C.

Abstract:The study of the thermal transport property of matter under extreme conditions is a significant but challenging task in the science community due to the unsatisfactory accuracy of heat flow characterization experimentally. In this work, a radiative-conductive coupled heat transfer model was proposed to resolve the heat transfer process inside a diamond anvil cell (DAC) under static heating conditions. The rationality of the model was verified via the characterization of the thermal conductivity of type Ia diamond. It is found that obvious error can come from the measurement of temperature by thermocouples in DAC. Based on this model, a temperature correction method with certain universality is presented for accurate temperature measurement by thermocouples in high-temperature experiments. The construction of the proposed model combined with the new correction method for temperature measurements may provide an efficient method for measuring potential thermal conductivity in a Bassett-type externally heated DAC.

Abstract:With the rapid fusion of temperature sensing technology and microwave technology, microwave temperature sensors have become the protagonist of competing research. We propose a planar resonator temperature sensor that combines substrate material modifications with sensor structure design. To realize this concept, high-performance TiO2-xwt. % ZnO (0 ≤ x ≤ 3) microwave dielectric ceramics are prepared. The various factors influencing dielectric properties, including crystal structure, phase composition, Raman vibration, microstructure, element valence, and oxygen vacancy, are completely investigated. The TiO2-0.7 wt. % ZnO ceramic exhibiting exceptional properties (εr = 106.6, Qf = 46 000 GHz, τf = 426.0 ppm/°C) is selected for substrate fabrication. The frequency and temperature dependence of εr and tan δ are analyzed at 2–4.5 GHz from −50 to 100 °C, revealing a good linearity between εr and temperature. A CSRR temperature sensor employing this substrate material is designed, simulated, fabricated, and validated from −50 to 90 °C. This sensor generates two resonance frequencies (around 0.5 and 1.4 GHz) in the UHF band, demonstrating sensitivities of 2.2 MHz/10 °C and 6.3 MHz/10 °C at the first and second resonance frequencies, along with an outstanding normalized sensitivity of approximately 0.045. Through a comprehensive analysis of the physical mechanisms affecting the sensor's sensitivity and quality factor, the design of the sensor is strengthened from the perspective of optimizing the performance of microwave dielectric ceramics. The regulation mechanism of dielectric characteristics is enriched and clarified, thereby achieving a synergistic improvement in sensor performance. This work expands the application scope of microwave dielectric ceramics and provides an innovative approach to environmental monitoring.
