Abstract:A rectangular pipe jacking machine is adopted in construction of the underground passages between North Huaqiang Station and Huaxin Station in Shenzhen, which are characterized by a large section, small spacing, a shallow overburden, parallel construction of several jacking pipes, and passage over a metro tunnel and under un-derground pipelines. A numerical model is established and the simulation method for the grouting pressure and the function of the pipe jacking machine head is discussed and improved, and the effect of pipe jacking construction on the surrounding environment is analyzed. The results show that:the surface settlement trough caused by rectangular pipe jacking construction complies with the Peck Formula, and ground loss plays a leading role in the formation of stratum displacement; with serial construction of several jacking pipes, the shape of the surface settlement trough changes from a "V" to a "W" and the vertical displacement of the shield tunnel superimposes continuously; and pipe roof support effectively decreases the deformation of ground surface and underground pipelines.

Abstract:Based on the development of rectangular pipe jacking, the characteristics of rectangular pipe jacking are introduced. The difference between surface settlements caused by rectangular pipe jacking is calculated by stochastic medium method and peck formula method. The influence of section shape on rectangular pipe jacking is analyzed. The results show that the calculation results of the stochastic medium method are more reasonable.

Abstract:When jacked piles are installed, horizontal and vertical movements develop in the soil surrounding the piles. These movements will tend to develop the displacement in adjacent buildings and roads that have already been built. This paper presents a synthesis of the field measurements obtained in a series of pile installations. The field test was preformed at the HaiYan city in China. The test project included lateral ground deformation, vertical surface displacement, soil excess pore pressure and displacement of adjacent buildings and roads induced by jacked piles. For the project, some measures such as prebored hole and groove were taken in order to decrease the compacting effects on buildings and roads in the vicinity. The results show that the prebored holes and groove to relax stress were effective measures against the compacting effects of pile installation.

Abstract:Based on summarizing characteristics of rectangular pipe-jacking projects,the stochastic medium theory was used to calculate surface settlement induced by rectangular pipe-jacking construction.The results were then compared with Peck Formula.With the increase of pipe depth,the results of Peck Formula comes to according with that of stochastic medium theory under uniform convergence condition,while differs from that under non-uniform convergence condition.With high embedment ratio,surface settlement troughs of circular pipe-jacking and rectangular pipe-jacking reach unanimity.The shape of settlement trough turns to wide and shallow with the increase of width-height ratio or gap ratio.Compared with observed values,the results calculated by stochastic medium theory are closer to practical situation than that of Peck Formula.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the sewage pipeline defect repair project of Shizuo Road, Baiyun District, Guangzhou City, this article uses traditional technology to repair the basic pipelines of the old and new urban areas and the environmental conditions of the construction section. The pipe jacking construction in the trenchless repair is used to cross the subway and the construction pipeline. The complicated construction technology of the cable tunnel is discussed. Using the Peck empirical formula to estimate the ground settlement and its deformation pressure on the surrounding tunnels, the maximum deformation of the tunnel pipeline in the soil disturbance area during the construction process of the project is 0.80mm, and the maximum deformation of the subway tunnel is 1.42mm, which accurately reflects the roof The impact of pipe construction on the soil of surrounding tunnels. And study the disturbance influence of the two soil stabilization technologies of high pressure jet grouting pile and work well top-down construction method on the surrounding soil during the construction process, minimize the disturbance influence of the pipe jacking construction method on the surrounding soil, and ensure the construction quality and safety of the site.

Abstract:Vertical and annular reinforcing steel bar stress and pipe-soil contact pressure during pipe jacking were monitored on the spot. Field data were analyzed. It showed that axis force increased along with pipe jacking at the very start, and it maintained stated basically when jacking to a certain distance. When inner side reinforcing steel bar of tip and bottom pipe were pulled, outer side were pressed. And both sides of pipe were just contrary. Reinforced concrete pipe could be regarded as flexible pipe. Annular reinforcing steel bar bears very little but with great alteration. Pipe-soil contact pressure increased slowly along with pipe jacking, and it also maintained stated basically after some distance. Contact pressure of tip pipe was greatly affected by grouting. The pressure decreased obviously after grouting and it could be adopted as up-earth gravity. Contact pressures of both sides were affected less. Compared with the tip pipe, they were almost the same before grouting and noticeably bigger after grouting.

Abstract:Pipe jacking have been widely used in utility tunnel constructions as an environment-friendly method in China. This study is focus on the critical technologies used in the pipe jacking for the utility tunnel in Huanggang Mingzhu road. The inner and outer diameter of this utility tunnel are 4m and 4.8m respectively, which is the largest circular pipe jacking project in China at present. This utility tunnel is designed under the urban main road with a heavy traffic, so the control accuracy of pipe jacking construction is required to be high. According to the characteristics of the project and actual construction technical measures, the key construction technologies including pipe jacking equipment, launching of small spacing, slurry circulating, the drag reduction technology, and the control of surface settlement are discussed in this paper. Meanwhile, the jacking force and ground settlement during pipe jacking construction are monitored. The results show that the selected pipe jacking machine has good adaptability to the geological conditions of the project. The actual jacking force is much smaller than the theoretical value, and the two intermediate jacking stations are not activated. In addition, the road surface deformation is -8–5mm during the whole process of pipe jacking construction, which has no impact on surface traffic.

Abstract:With technological progress in recent years, supersized rectangular jacked pipe tunnels have been increasingly used for developing urban road-crossing nodes, owing to their convenient construction and economic benefits. However, owing to the weak waterproofing performance of the joint, jacked supersized rectangular pipes have been employed beneath a navigable river. This study used on-site monitoring data of an underground expressway with supersized rectangular jacked pipe tunnels in Shanghai. Additionally, we analyzed the deformation of the ground surface and embankment and the mutual influence of jacked adjacent pipes. The results revealed the following. 1) the over-excavation of the jacked pipe causes partial surface subsidence. The jacking parameters were adjusted through feedback to control the surface deformation. 2) The spatial deformation of the old embankment were stabilized, suggesting the successful realization of micro-disturbance jacking construction. 3) The secondary disturbance of the soil due to post-construction causes a slight sinking and tilting trend of the former jacked tunnel.
Study on Calculational Method of Ground Settlement Induced by Level Parallel Pipe Jacking

Abstract:The interaction of two level parallel pipe jacking is analyzed;and the calculation of lateral disturbance scope is advanced.Considering the effects of former pipe jacking on the latter,a new calculational method for ground settlement of latter pipe jacking is put forward with an analytical calculation example.It is shown that the ground settlement produced by middle zone is greater because of double disturbance during parallel pipe jacking construction.Also,the surrounding soil disturbance due to former pipe jacking construction will strengthen the disturbance during latter pipe jacking construction when the axes of two pipe jacking are in close quarters.Thus,the maximum ground settlement and width of settlement trough during latter pipe jacking construction become greater.In addition,curves of ground settlement are dissymmetric for latter pipe jacking and can still be calculated with Peck formula.The maximum settlement point on curves leans towards the side of former pipe jacking.

Abstract:This paper presents a case history on the performance of soft deposit during the excavation of a series of jacked pipes in Xiangshui, Jiangsu, China. The soft deposit of the construction site is forms a multi-aquifer-aquitard system, in which the aquitard is situated above the aquifers. The deposit consists of a deltaic deposit from the ancient Yellow River. Four parallel pipes with a diameter of 4.2 m were jacked under the River Guan at a depth of about 20 m. The jacked pipes passed through the silty sand which has very high hydraulic conductivity. During construction, ground surface settlement, lateral displacement, pore water pressure, and earth pressure were monitored. The results showed that during construction there is insignificant impact on the surroundings.

Abstract:In recent years, the technique of pipe jacking construction has been developed quickly and widely applied in water supply and drainage pipe projects in China, but it is required to study and discuss the mechanism of soil disturbance and changes of soil properties during pipe jacking. The mechanism of soil disturbance due to pipe jacking is investigated, and an improved method proposed to divide the sections of soil disturbance based on the results of former researchers. Analyses is made on the observational data of surface deformation, lateral deformation at sub-surface, pore water pressure, earth pressure, ground water level and in-situ pipe jacking construction records. The results show that the factors, such as ground conditions, construction techniques and the degree of site control, all affect soil disturbance, especially the degree of site control including jacking force, earth pressure, pipe line alignment, and slurry pressure. Change of earth pressure, pore water pressure, underground water level, surface deformation, and sub-surface movement all have direct relationship with distance between shield and testing section. Before the shield reaches the testing section (about 6-7 meters away), the values of earth pressure, pore water pressure and underground water level go up to the peak. When the empennage of shield leaves the testing section, the values of surface uplift and sub-surface movement go up to the peak first and then descended. The results of in-situ testing prove the mechanism of soil disturbance well.
On Resin Concrete Pipe-jacking Applied in New Sewage Pipelines

Abstract:Taking the pipe-jacking construction of Shanghai Luobei Rd. sewage pipelines project for example, resin concrete pipe-jacking is adopted finally after a features comparison among reinforced concrete pipe-jacking, glass reinforced plastic mortar pipe-jacking and resin concrete pipe-jacking. Then, the data analysis and the jacking force prediction of resin concrete pipe-jacking are presented in the paper. Thinking about the total construction cost table, the pipe fee of resin concrete pipe-jacking is lower than that of F-type pipe-jacking at DN800 ～ 1200. With the increasing of pipe-jackings, the proportion of the jacking construction fee will be increased too. Resin concrete pipe-jacking can reflect its advantages, moreover, when meeting the same flow capacity, the resin concrete one can adopt smaller pipe-jacking.

Abstract:The parallel buried pipelines will be damaged by soil movements around pipe induced by pipe jacking. The displacements of parallel buried pipelines induced by pipe jacking are analyzed by 3D-FEM. Displacements of buried pipeline affected by injection slurry, alignments, the distance between pipeline and pipe jacking axis, the depth of buried pipeline, the materials of buried pipeline, the elastic modulus ratio between buried pipeline and soil are studied. The analysis results show that the more pressure of injection slurry and alignments, the more displacements of buried pipeline; the more buried pipeline apart from pipe jacking, the less displacements of buried pipeline; the more elastic modulus of buried pipeline, the more displacements of underground pipeline.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of the oil and gas storage, transportation, and pipeline industries, it is necessary to improve the construction process of oil and gas pipelines. By combining the technical advantages of horizontal directional drilling and pipe jacking construction, the direct pipe laying method is suitable for pipeline crossing in different strata in the oil and gas, water conservancy and hydropower, and municipal industries due to its advantages of less construction land, high speed, and reversibility. Using the rapid jacking and laying of pipelines crossing Nanjuma River in the ‘Jingshihan’ gas pipeline double line project as a case study, this paper investigates the application status of the direct pipe laying method, summarizes the project, and introduces the construction of the working well, equipment selection, guiding control technology, supporting equipment installation, and drag reduction measures, as well as analyzes the influencing factors of thrust force and trajectory deviation combined with formation information.

Abstract:Injecting slurry is usually used to reduce the jacking friction in long-distance pipe jacking. The material of slurry and its property are studied. The reciprocal-action mechanism of soil and mud slurry around pipe in the course of injecting slurry is investigated. The seepage behavior of mud slurry on soil around pipe and the influence of injection on soil movements are discussed, and several problems which should be paid attention to in injecting slurry are put forward.
Deflection Behavior Of The Steel Pipe-Jacking In Soft Soil Seabed

Abstract:The pipe-jacking method is a kind of efficient trenchless technology to install pipelines, especially for the pipeline going through the downtown of the city or the rivers. As the important part of the water supply project in Xiamen, two steel pipes with 2.2m diameter would be installed to cross the strait between Xiamen Island and the mainland. Considering the navigation channel in the strait, complicated stratums in site, and construction techniques and costs, the pipe-jacking method is adopted. Since the longitudinal stiffness of the steel jacking pipes is relatively lower than that of the reinforced concrete jacking pipes, the upheaval deflection is more likely to occur on the steel pipes with small buried depth. In this study, the upheaval deflection of the steel jacking pipes in the soft soil seabed is analyzed and controlled. The total jacking distance from #2 working well to #5 working well in this project is 816 m. During the jacking stage, obvious upheaval deflection occurs in the part under channel area, in where the buried depth of pipes is only 2.96m (i.e. 1.3D). Such upheaval movement also affects the adjacent pipe sections, which causes that the total upheaval length of pipe is about 260 m. Considering the geological condition and influence of the wave, the qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis is carried out to investigate the major factors causing the upheaval deflection. Result shows that the resistance of soil is too small to offset resultant upward forces. Furthermore, the jacking force will contribute to the increase of upheaval after the upward deflection occurs. Therefore, surcharging method is proposed to reduce the upward deflection of the steel jacking pipes. The field measurement shows that the deflection of steel pipes decreased after loading in pipes. This study will provide the beneficial reference for the design and the construction of the steel jacking pipes in soft soil seabed.
Analysis of site monitoring of ground deformation induced by parallel pipe jacking construction

Abstract:The disturbance scopes in lateral and vertical directions,and calculational formulas for ground settlement are gained by analyzing the rules for ground deformation induced by level parallel pipe jacking construction in one underconsolidation soil.It shows that the ground settlement produced by middle zone is greater because of double disturbance during parallel pipe jacking construction.Also,the surrounding soil disturbance due to former pipe jacking construction will strengthen the disturbance during latter pipe jacking construction.Thus,the maximal ground settlement and width of settlement tank during latter pipe jacking construction are greater than those of the former.Ground settlement due to parallel pipe jacking construction is produced not only by the ground loss but also by the reconsolidation and secondary consolidation of the disturbed soil.Excess pore water pressure from soil disturbance is the reason for post-construction settlement.Finally,post-construction settlement in underconsolidation soil is basically proportional to the logarithm of time.

Abstract:In this study, we propose baffle-type rectangular pipe jacking in the context of the world's first shallow large-section rectangular pipe-jacking project under a high-speed railway line, with the aim of improving the utilization of underground urban space. We introduce the relevant method of construction as well as safety control technology for ongoing construction in the proximity of pipe jacking in a complex geological and structural environment, and propose techniques of optimization for the continued application of baffle-type rectangular pipe jacking in similar projects. The results showed the following: (1) the maximum value of the surface settlement as the pipe-jacking machine passed through it was 160 mm. But the maximum uplift, maximum settlement, and maximum relative settlement of the D-shape temporary beams were 6.31, −5.78, and 6.71 mm. (2) The theoretical mechanics-based calculations was used to derive the minimum safe distance required to form a stable microarch effect between the roofs of the pipes, and the recommended distance in the project considered in this study was 24 cm. (3) The results of assessments based on multiple measures showed that the proposed pipe-jacking method led to the successful completion of crossing work for high-speed rails that were in use. This means that it is feasible to use rectangular pipe jacking to pass through an operating high-speed rail in composite strata at a shallow depth. We also provide suggestions for applications of the retractable baffle-type rectangular pipe jacking in the future.
