Abstract:Numerical methods are developed in the quantum transport calculations for electron in the waveguides with spin–orbital (Rashba) interaction. The methods are based on a hybrid mode-matching scheme in which the wavefunctions are expressed as the superposition of eigenmodes in the lead regions and in the device region the wavefunction is expressed on the discrete basis. Two versions are presented for the lead without and with the Rashba interaction. In the latter case the eigenmodes are obtained from a quadratic eigenproblem calculation. These methods are suitable for the systems with variable geometries or arbitrary potential profiles. The computation can be effectively accelerated by the sparse matrix technique. We also investigate the Fano–Rashba bound states in the Rashba waveguides by some nonlinear eigenstate calculation. This calculation is based on a mode-matching method and self-consistent results are obtained in our calculations.

Abstract:The influence of inelastic relaxation time on the intrinsic spin Hall effects in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba interaction is studied; we clarify the controversy as regards impurity effects in the system. We reveal that, due to the existence of inelastic scattering, the spin Hall conductivity does not vanish when the impurity concentration diminishes to zero, regardless of nonmagnetic or magnetic disorder. The spin accumulation is evaluated by using the spin Hall conductivity obtained, and an alternative route is suggested for verifying the intrinsic spin Hall effect by measuring the spin accumulation at different ratios.

Abstract:The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is evaluated by taking into account the anisotropic coupling between magnetic impurities and itinerant electrons. In our calculation, Kubo's linear response formalism is employed and the vertex correction is considered. In the semiclassical limit $\ensuremath{\mu}⪢1∕\ensuremath{\tau}$, a nonvanishing spin Hall conductivity ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathit{sH}}$ is found to depend on the momentum relaxation time $\ensuremath{\tau}$, spin-orbit splitting $\ensuremath{\Delta}$, and the anisotropic coefficient of interaction between itinerant electrons and magnetic impurities. The clean limit of ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathit{sH}}$ is in the region of $e∕8\ensuremath{\pi}\char21{}e∕6\ensuremath{\pi}$, depending on the anisotropic coefficient.

Abstract:We study the spin dynamics of two-dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling by taking account of electron-electron interactions. The diffusion equations for charge and spin densities are derived by making use of the path-integral approach and the quasiclassical Green's function. Analyzing the effect of the interactions, we show that the spin-relaxation time can be enhanced by the electron-electron interaction in the ballistic regime.

Abstract:We study transport properties of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a perpendicular magnetic field. The spin-orbit coupling competes with Zeeman splitting to introduce additional degeneracies between different Landau levels at certain magnetic fields. This degeneracy, if occurring at the Fermi level, gives rise to a resonant spin Hall conductance, whose height is divergent as 1/T and whose weight is divergent as -ln(T at low temperatures. The Hall conductance is unaffected by the Rashba coupling.

Abstract:In terms of SU(2) Yang-Mills field formulism, we give a nature definition of spin current for the systems with Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings etc., and we obtain a covariant form of continuity equations for the corresponding spin current [1]. The traditional Kubo formula is generalized to describe the linear response with respect to non-Abelian fields. We find that the covariant form we proposed plays an essential role in guaranteeing the consistency of SU(2) Kubo formula [2]. We also derive the classical counterpart of quantum mechanical covariant “continuity-like” equation for the spin current, and present an intuitive picture for elucidating the non-conservation of the spin current [3]. We discuss the spin-relaxation time for two-dimensional systems with a hierarchy of spin-orbit couplings, and found that the spin-relaxation time can be infinite if the coupling strengths certain condition which correspond to the vanishing Yang-Mills “magnetic” field [4].

Abstract:Spin transport properties of a coupled bilayer electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are studied. The definition of the spin currents in each layer as well as the corresponding continuity-like equations in the bilayer system are given. The curves of the spin Hall conductivities obtained in each layer exhibit sharp cusps around a particular value of the tunnelling strength and the conductivities undergo sign changes across this point. Our investigation on the impurity effect manifests that an arbitrarily small concentration of nonmagnetic impurities does not suppress the spin Hall conductivity to zero in the bilayer system. Based on these features, an experimental scheme is suggested to detect a magnification of the spin Hall effect.

Abstract:In Ref. 1 we reported on a numerical study of the influence of disorder on the spin Hall conductivity of the k-linear Rashba model, concluding incorrectly that it remains finite in the thermodynamic limit. Our original conclusion is at odds with new numerical findings2 in which the extrapolation to infinite system size is carried out systematically. The new numerical results are consistent with the conclusion from perturbation theory calculations that the dc spin Hall conductivity of this model is zero.3,4 These numerical studies are complicated by strong frequency dependence and large fluctuations in the spin Hall conductivity values obtained in finite-size calculations. The earlier calculations erred by using the frequency dependence of the longitudinal conductivity, which has corrections that vary as 2 compared to the 1 dependence of the spin Hall conductivity discussed below, to judge whether or not the dc limit was reached. The new findings in Ref. 2 supersede the conclusions reached in Ref. 1 with regards to the thermodynamic dc limit of the k-linear Rashba model. Abstract:The spin Hall transport properties in a two-dimensional electron system with both Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and magnetic impurities are investigated. Electrons are scattered by impurities through an exchange interaction that leads to spin flip-flop processes and so changes the spin Hall effect induced by the SOC. The spin Hall conductance is calculated in a 4-terminal system using the Landauer-Buttiker formula and Green function approach. In comparison with the simulation results on nonmagnetic impurities doping systems, our results reveal that the spin Hall conductance is still nonzero in a system with a large density of magnetic impurities and a finite intensity of the exchange interaction between the electrons and impurities, and its sign may be altered when the doping density and interaction strength are large enough.

Abstract:Using the four-terminal Landauer-Bu ttiker formula and Green's function approach, we calculate numerically the spin-Hall conductance in a two-dimensional junction system with the Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and disorder. We find that the spin-Hall conductance can be much greater or smaller than the universal value e/8pi, depending on the magnitude of the SO coupling, the electron Fermi energy, and the disorder strength. The spin-Hall conductance does not vanish with increasing sample size for a wide range of disorder strength. Our numerical calculation reveals that a nonzero SO coupling can induce electron delocalization for disorder strength smaller than a critical value, and the nonvanishing spin-Hall effect appears mainly in the metallic regime.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium Green's function approach is employed to investigate the spin-Hall effect in diffusive two-dimensional electron systems with Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Considering a long-range electron-impurity scattering potential in the self-consistent Born approximation, we find that the spin-Hall effect arises from two distinct interband polarizations in helicity basis: a disorder-unrelated polarization directly induced by the electric field and a polarization mediated by electron-impurity scattering. The disorder-unrelated polarization is associated with all electron states below the Fermi surface and produces the original intrinsic spin-Hall current, while the disorder-mediated polarization emerges with contribution from the electron states near the Fermi surface and gives rise to an additional contribution to the spin-Hall current. Within the diffusive regime, the total spin-Hall conductivity vanishes in infinitely large samples, independently of temperature, of the spin-orbit coupling constant, of the impurity density, and of the specific form of the electron-impurity scattering potential. However, in a finite-size Rashba two-dimensional semiconductor, the spin-Hall conductivity no longer always vanishes. Depending on the sample size in the micrometer range, it can be positive, zero or negative with a maximum absolute value reaching as large as e/8π order of magnitude at low temperatures. As the sample size increases, the total spin-Hall conductivity oscillates with a decreasing amplitude. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the spin-Hall conductivity for different sample sizes.

Abstract:It is shown that a finite spin-Hall current can be induced by applying an in-plane magnetic field in a diffusive two-dimensional electron system with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings subjected to a dc electric field. The spin-Hall conductivity depends not only on the strength and direction of the magnetic field, but also strongly depends on the form of the scattering potential. It can be negative or positive in the case of remote impurity scattering, but essentially positive in the case of short-range scattering.

Abstract:Based on numerical study of the Rashba model, we show that the spin Hall conductance remains finite in the presence of disorder up to a characteristic length scale, beyond which it vanishes exponentially with the system size. We further perform a Laughlin's gauge experiment numerically and find that all energy levels cannot cross each other during an adiabatic insertion of the flux in accordance with the general level repulsion rule. It results in zero spin transfer between two edges of the sample as each state always evolves back after the insertion of one flux quantum in contrast to the quantum Hall effect. It implies that the intrinsic spin Hall effect vanishes with the turn-on of disorder.

Abstract:In a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, the external electric field may cause a spin Hall current in the direction perpendicular to the electric field. This effect was called the intrinsic spin Hall effect. In this paper, we investigate the influences of spin accumulation on this intrinsic spin Hall effect. We show that due to the existence of boundaries in a real sample, the spin Hall current generated by the intrinsic spin Hall effect will cause spin accumulation near the edges of the sample, and in the presence of spin accumulation, the spin Hall conductivity will not have a universal value. The influences of spin accumulation on the intrinsic spin Hall effect in narrow strips of two-dimensional electron gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are investigated in detail.

Abstract:The spin-Hall effect in the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) generates symmetric out-of-plane spin Sz accumulation about the current axis in the absence of external magnetic field. Here we employ the real space Landauer-Keldysh formalism [B. K. Nikolic et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 046601 (2005); Phys. Rev. B 73, 075303 (2006)] by considering a four-terminal setup to investigate the circumstances in which this symmetry is broken. For the absence of Dresselhaus interaction, starting from the applied out-of-plane B corresponding to Zeeman splitting energy 0 - 0.5 times the Rashba hopping energy tR, the breaking process is clearly seen. The influence of the Rashba interaction on the magnetization of the 2DEG is studied herein. For coexisted Rashba tR and Dresselhaus tD spin-orbit couplings in the absence of B, interchanging tR and tD reverses the entire accumulation pattern.
